• In 1971 Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi of Iran wanted to mark the 2,500th anniversary of the founding of the Persian Empire with a party that people would remember for the next 2,500 years. The Shah recreated a city reminiscent of the ancient Persian Empire by erecting a city of tents in the desert. He imported 165 French chefs, wine stewards, and waiters. Over 500 guests were seated in throne-like chairs along a mahogany dining table 235 feet (71 m) long. The cost of the 6-hour banquet was $11 million— or $22,000 per guest. When the poverty-stricken populace found out about this extravagance, the discontent it caused contributed greatly to his unpopularity and eventual downfall. • Agostino Chigi was a wealthy banker in Rome in the 1500s. He held extravagant dinner parties at his villa overlooking the Tiber River. After each course, he instructed his guests to hurl their dirty dishes and silverware into the river. What the guests didn’t know was that prior to each party, the banker had his servants string a net just below the surface of the water so that none of the tableware was lost. (continued next page)

DINNER PARTIES (cont’d) • A rich gourmand named Cambaceres was presented with two incredibly huge sturgeon. One weighed 374 lbs (170 kg) and the other weighed 324 lbs (147 kg). The problem was how to present both fish at a feast without having one belittle the other. Cambaceres solved the problem like this: he had the smaller fish cooked, decked out, and paraded on a huge platter around the table. The waiter then tripped, the fish landed on the floor, and wails of despair arose. Cambaceres then rose and called out, “Serve the other!” and the larger fish was brought out, to the astonishment of the diners.

• According to legend, Victorian Sardou was a French playwright. One evening he knocked over his wine glass at a dinner party. The lady seated next to him sprinkled salt on the spill to prevent a stain. Superstitious, Sardou then tossed some salt over his left shoulder to ward off bad luck. Unfortunately, the waiter who was standing behind him was hit in the eye by the salt, and dropped the roast chicken he was carrying. The family dog grabbed the chicken and began eating it so fast that he began to choke on a bone. The son of the house tried to wrestle the bone out of the dog’s throat. The dog bit the boy so hard that his finger had to be amputated.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta RATTLESNAKES AREN’T ONLY DANGER DOGS FACE DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We’re planning a road trip out West this summer to several national parks, and our two dogs are coming along. We’ve done all our research on which parks allow pets and have everything planned out. But I’m worried about the dogs while we’re out hiking, especially that they might be bitten by rattlesnakes. I heard there’s a snakebite vaccine available. Should I give it to them before we go? -- Betsy J., Madison, Wisconsin DEAR BETSY: Snakebite vaccine is really expensive -- $800 or more -- and not covered by pet insurance. And it doesn’t mean they’re out of danger if they are bitten. Heat, jagged terrain and ticks are much bigger hazards than snakes. While there’s no guarantee that accident or injury won’t happen, you can drastically improve the odds in your favor by observing just a few guidelines. * Follow park service rules for pets: Dogs must be on a leash at all times. * Check the bulletin board at park entry points or ranger stations for the latest on health and safety hazards in the park. Better yet, ask a ranger directly. * Make sure your dogs’ vaccinations are up to date before starting your trip. * Carry a pet first-aid kit. * Every evening and morning, check the dogs for ticks. Lyme disease is not as big a problem out West, but ticks there carry plenty of other scary diseases. * Check paws frequently for cuts, scrapes and bruises. * Don’t leave your dogs in hot vehicles, even for a few minutes. * Be prepared to alter your plans if conditions change or a hiking route looks too dangerous.

• Pianist Ignace Paderewski was asked to provide after-dinner entertainment for a dinner party held by an English duchess. Once the hostess asked if he had brought his violin. “No, madame, my violin does not dine,” he answered.

Do You Have a Brake Problem? By Craig W. Armstrong
One of the biggest inconveniences we all face are car problems. But like problems with our bodies, the longer we ignore them, the bigger the problem gets. One area of our vehicle that gives off warning signs is our brakes. Here are a few things to look and listen for when determining brake problems. Most cars use disc brakes. Disc brakes work like this. Brake fluid fills a hydraulic system. This fluid triggers a set of pads which clamp down on the brake calipers. This causes the calipers to squeeze together on a disc known as a rotor. The friction between the pads and the rotor is what causes the vehicle to stop. Like many problem with our vehicles, your brakes will make certain sounds when they are not operating properly. One of the most commons sounds is a high-pitched squeal. This sound can mean that brake pads are wearing thin and need to be replaced.

A more harsh sound you might hear is grinding. This can mean that your brake pads have worn completely through and the metal of the calipers is grinding on the metal of the rotors. Another indicator of potential brake problems is if your vehicle is pulling. It may feel like the car is driving itself and wants to pull one way or another. This might indicate a stuck caliper. The reason this would cause pulling to one side is because the friction caused will be on one wheel and not the other, thus causing a pulling to one side. You might also feel a vibration when you are braking. This can also feel like the brakes are skipping. This is usually the result of a warped rotor. However, it can also indicate that your car is out of alignment. Either way, if this occurs, get it into the shop to be checked. Sometimes your brakes can feel “mushy.” Another way to interpret this sensation is if you have to push hard on the brake pedal to get the vehicle to stop. Sometimes it may feel like you are pushing the break all the way to the floor. This could indicate a leak in the brake system. One way to verify this is to look for leaked brake fluid under your car. It will look and feel similar to oil, but less thick. Even if you have a puddle that isn’t brake fluid, you still have a problem. Your car shouldn’t be leaking anything. Being aware of potential problems with your car can save you money in the long run. Like our bodies, catching potential problems early can keep them from becoming more serious and costly. So pay attention to what your car is trying to tell you and if you think you have a problem, get it checked out by a professional mechanic.

• A new method of treating victims involves a drug derived from the milk thistle plant. This drug sits on top of the receptors that bring poison into the liver, preventing it from being absorbed. Instead, toxins remain in the blood stream where the kidneys expel them more quickly. If started on this drug within 96 hours, survival is likely. If the kidneys are already failing when the drug is administered, death is likely. Death usually occurs one or two weeks after consuming the mushroom. • You can’t be poisoned by handling the deathcap, and even chewing it is safe if it’s spit out before swallowing. It’s the digestion of the mushroom that’s deadly. Squirrels and slugs are not affected and eat them often. • The scientific name for the plant is “Amanita phalloides” from the Greek words “amanitai” meaning “mushroom” and the Latin word for phallus, denoting its shape. • The deathcap is not native to the U.S. but was accidentally introduced to California from Europe in the 1930s on the roots of an imported plant. It’s now found on every continent except Antarctica. • On the west coast of the U.S. the deathcap prefers to live under oak trees; on the east coast it prefers pines, but can also be found under other trees including chestnut, birch, and beech. • Mushroom poisoning is more common in Europe than in America perhaps because the deathcap is found more widely there. Until around 1950, the mortality rate was as high as 70%. With advances in medical care, the rate has consistently dropped and now averages about 15%, though children under the age of ten are more likely to die. • In 1740, Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI died after eating a plate of sautéed deathcaps. His death led to the War of the Austrian Succession, leading Voltaire to remark, “This dish of mushrooms changed the destiny of Europe.” • The Roman emperor Claudius was very fond of mushrooms, and may have been deliberately poisoned, dying in the year 54 A.D. Some researchers speculate that he was given a dose of deadly nightshade while he was ill in order to hasten his death.
