Walt Disney has received more Academy Awards and nominations than any other person in history – 22 Awards and 59 nominations between 1932 and 1969.

Come along with Tidbits as we consider what the nose knows!

MADE TO “ODOR”

• Behind the bridge of the nose and below the brain, two small pieces of tissue dangle in the nasal passage. They’re packed with ten million receptor cells and covered with mucus. Nerve fibers connect them to the two olfactory bulbs below the brain. Airborne chemicals are carried up the nose, mixed with warm humid air, trapped by mucus, and sampled by these sensors. The signals are sent to the brain which identifies the odor. Nerves in the nose are the only nerves in the human body that regenerate. This may be due to the fact that they’re the only nerves that are out in the open, protected only by mucus. • The average person can name more than 2,000 odors. Trained experts can recognize over 10,000. The power of the nose peaks in middle age and then fades. About half of people over 80 cannot smell, which may account for the high number of accidental gas poisonings each year among the elderly. People with Alzheimer’s disease are likely to have smelling deficits. One out of every 15 victims of head injury wakes up in a permanently odorless world. Accidents are the leading cause of the inability to smell, an affliction suffered by 2 million Americans. (continued on next page)

NO NOSE BLOWING

• According to legend, Frederick the Great of Prussia was inspecting his soldiers when he noticed their sleeves were dirtier than the rest of their uniforms. When he asked why, he was told that the men used their sleeves to wipe the sweat from their brow and to blow their noses on. To stop this, he ordered that buttons be sewn on the sleeves, giving the men a nasty scratch whenever they used their sleeves as hankies. Today men’s suits are still adorned with useless buttons.

• When you inhale air that is 10°F, it will be warmed to 91°F inside your nasal passages before it ever reaches your throat. • The mucous lining catches debris like flypaper attracting flies and it manufactures more than a pint of mucus a day. The mucus also keeps the humidity in your nose at 80%. • Suppressing a sneeze has been known to damage ribs, facial bones, cartilage, and ears. Anything so powerful it can propel droplets 6 feet at 100 mph should not be stopped.

UNUSUAL NOSES

• Junius Brutus Booth, father of John Wilkes Booth, was a famous stage actor. His handsome appearance was marred by a broken nose. Once a female fan gushed, “You’re such a wonderful actor, but I just can’t get over your nose!” He replied, “Well, no wonder! The bridge is gone!” • When Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe lost the tip of his nose in a duel, he had it replaced with a silver one. • Sir William Davenant, a British writer, lost his nose due to illness and his appearance was very disconcerting. An old woman once blessed his eyesight. When he enquired why, she replied that if his eyesight ever failed, he would have no place to prop a pair of spectacles. (continued on next page)

SCRATCH & SNIFF

• The folks at Baltimore’s public utility company were only trying to do their job, but it backfired on them. Maryland state law requires that the company remind its gas customers every year what natural gas smells like if it were to leak into the customer’s home. (Natural gas doesn’t actually smell, but the chemicals that are added to it give it an unmistakable odor.) So officials decided to send out a pamphlet to all of their customers that would have a small scratch and sniff area on the back that would remind them of the odor of gas. Well, there must have been a mistake made at the factory that put the smell capsules on the pamphlets because the odor was so strong that it permeated the envelopes. Folks didn’t even have to open their mail to smell the gas, so on the first day after the pamphlet was sent, the company received more than 100 calls about non-existent gas leaks.

It Started With A Stick By Doris A. Black

A long time ago someone came up with the idea of hitting a small ball with a stick. Ever since man has been fascinated with golf. The specific origins of golf have been lost over the years, but ball-and-stick games of all sorts have been popular since the medieval times. Forerunners of golf were called “palle-maille” in France and Italy where it was a street game played using a mallet and wooden ball. When the game traveled to Great Britain, it became so popular the Brits designed a court for it. During the 15th century in Belgium, the game was called “chole” and was played using a wooden ball and a spoon-shaped wooden club. In Holland, “colf” was played on ice with wooden balls, and later, leather balls stuffed with cow hair. As it gained in popularity, “colf” was moved indoors and the name was changed to “kolf.” Even though they all used sticks/clubs and balls of some sort, these early games seldom resembled our modern game of golf. Many countries played the games, but it was Scotland where the modern game originated. History tells us the earliest balls were made of wood. In Scotland, the townspeople played in the streets or open grassy areas of the village. In the 1600s, when less open space was available, the land along the coastlines became a more convenient place to play. The land was called “links” because it linked the coastline to the more usable farmland inland. At the same time, wooden balls were replaced with leather bags stuffed with boiled feathers. Referred to as “featheries,” they weren’t very durable and were time consuming to produce, with the best craftsman making only four per day, causing them to be expensive. Players also began tinkering with the design of their sticks or clubs. Thin, long-shafted clubs were chosen for distance driving and shorter ones for short hops or to drive the ball downwind. By the mid-1800s, the feathery was replaced with the gutty. Made from parts of the guttapercha tree, the gutty was heavier and more durable, but its smooth exterior caused unpredictable directional flight. It turned out that a used gutty, pockmarked by wear, performed better and soon guttys were made with a more irregular surface. Clubs changed, too, in order to better control the gutty. Heads were made bigger in depth and width and a brass striking plate was added. (continued in next column)

Tidbits® of Niagara Region

(continued) In Scotland, inventor Coburn Haskell stumbled upon the rubber ball. He realized that its application to kolf would improve the game, as a rubber ball would fly much farther than the gutty. When combined with a hard, rough exterior, the rubber ball became the basis for today’s modern golf balls. As the century wore on, clubs continued to change in design. Shafts were made of bamboo or ash and specific clubs, like the mashie, sand iron, driving cleek, niblick and putting cleek, were used by players under different circumstances. The first golf courses were also a far cry from what we know today. There were no beautifully manicured lawns, golf carts or clubhouses to relax in afterwards. The links were mostly barren and inhabitable pieces of land, often windswept and sandy with no trees and a rugged terrain filled with rocks and crevices. Using crude clubs and even cruder balls, it’s a wonder the sport survived at all. But it did and it grew in popularity, coming to the United States in the late 1700s where it flourished. The next time you step up to that tee, remember those who came before you and how hard it was to get a hole-in-one with a feathery.

Amazing Plants

BLUE GREEN ALGAE • Technically, blue green algae is not really an algae. It’s really a phylum of bacteria that engage in photosynthesis called cyanobacteria. The name comes from the Greek word “kyanós” (or “cyan”) meaning “blue.” • In the water, blue green algae shows up where fertilizer runoff feeds it. It requires calm water, so it’s seldom found in rivers and streams that move with a quick current. Instead, it prefers ponds and lakes. When it blooms, it gives off neurotoxins that contaminate not only the water but also the fish living there. When contaminated fish are eaten, symptoms include nausea, dizziness, and amnesia. Swimming in the water can be dangerous, and drinking the water can cause liver failure, seizures, paralysis, and death. • But blue green algae, AKA cyanobacteria, thrive even outside of the water. They form symbiotic relationships with fungi, and when bacteria and fungi team up together, the result is lichens. These lichens thrive in many places: damp soil, desert sand, Antarctic rocks, and barren boulders. • People living in close proximity to lakes infested with blue green algae can show an increased rate of ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Soldiers who served around Qatar during the Gulf Wars also show an increased risk of ALS because of the prevalence of lichens in the desert crust. (cont’d on next page)

WWII Ration Books

Q: I have two War Ration Books, and I wonder if they are worth keeping or should I cash them in. -- Helen, Decatur, Illinois A: Millions of ration books were issued during World War II. They were intended to prevent the hoarding of such goods as coffee, sugar, meat and other items in short supply due to the war. Ration books generally sell in the $5 to $25 range, but unlike savings bonds, you can’t cash them in as you wish. *** Q: I have two crocks that were made in Parkersburg, West Virginia, by A.P. Donaghho. I believe they were probably produced in the 1940s. What could they be worth? -- Leonard, Salisbury, Maryland A: Alexander Polk Donaghho moved to Parkersburg from Fredericktown, Pennsylvania, in 1870. He built a kiln there because of the rich clay deposits and continued in Parkersburg until 1903, when he ceased operations. Your crocks are more than a century old, much earlier than you suspected. Donaghho is best known for his hand-decorated stoneware. He later used stencils, but it is his earlier pieces that bring record prices. A saltglazed crock with a cobalt design recently sold at Cowwan’s Auction Company for $270. *** Q: I have an RCA Victor Collectors Issue of Glenn Miller and his Orchestra, which I purchased for my husband in 1963. Does it have any value? -- Barbara, Albuquerque, New Mexico

A: I found your set referenced in the Goldmine Standard Catalogue of American Records 19501975, compiled by Ted Neely (Krause Books). According to Neely, your limited edition was originally issued in 1953, and that first pressing is valued in the $75 to $150 range. Since your set is a later issue, it would be worth less. I found several sets listed on eBay, mostly in the $50 to $75 range. *** Q: I have some baseball record books called “Who’s Who in the Major Leagues,” by John Carmichael. The ones I have are 1944, 1945 and 1947. These are baseball history and I am curious about values. -- Ken, Leland, Illinois A: Your baseball record books would retail in the $25 to $50 range, depending on condition.

BLUE GREEN ALGAE (cont’d) • However, many facets of blue green algae are essential. Because it was one of the first oxygen-producing organisms that appeared on the planet, it was responsible for transforming Earth from an anaerobic environment to an oxygen-rich one. Many oil deposits were formed from eons of blue green algae. • Some types of blue green algae, such as spirulina, are sold as health food supplements because of its nourishing properties. • Blue green algae has the ability to fix nitrogen in the environment. All plants need nitrogen to grow, and nitrogen is plentiful in the atmosphere, but there are only a few types of plants that can take the nitrogen out of the air and transfer it to the soil where other plants can utilize it. Most notably, legumes such as soybeans perform this service, which is why soybeans (which fix nitrogen) are routinely rotated with other crops such as corn (which use nitrogen.) Cyanobacteria perform this same service, both in the water and on land. • A certain type of aquatic fern is planted in rice paddies because cyanobacteria are contained within the leaves of the fern, nourishing it with nitrogen. When the fern dies and sinks to the bottom of the rice paddy, the nitrogen is released so the next crop of rice can use it. • One company is experimenting with making ethanol from blue green algae by floating large plastic containers of it in the ocean and collecting the ethanol produced by the actions of sun, heat, and algae. • It’s possible that blue green algae could provide not only food but also oxygen in future manned missions to Mars. • One of the most famous outbreaks of blue green algae happened in 1961 in Santa Cruz, California, when residents awoke in the middle of the night to the sound of birds slamming against their windows and dying in the streets. When they rushed outside to see what was happening, poisoned and disoriented seagulls were attracted by the light of the flashlights, and flew towards the people. Interested by this unexplained phenomenon, Alfred Hitchcock produced a movie based on a Daphne du Maurier story called “The Birds.” It was decades later when scientists eventually concluded that the bizarre behavior of the birds was caused by eating anchovies that had been contaminated with blue green algae. • In the late 1800s the pharmaceutical company Burroughs, Wellcome & Co. compressed several medications into a single pill and called it a “tabloid.” In 1902 the Westminster Gazette published a new journal which condensed the news in several other papers. They also called it a tabloid. Burroughs, Wellcome & Co. took them to court saying the word “tabloid” belonged exclusively to them and could not be used by the newspaper. They lost their case, and today the original meaning of tabloid is nearly forgotten. • The definition of blizzard was originally “a stunning blow, as by the fist” and usually was used in reference to knock-out punches in boxing. On March 14, 1870 a snowstorm hit Iowa hard and a newspaper reporter wrote that the storm had knocked-out the city with a blizzard— and a new definition was born. • When the French were tracing their ancestry, they used the standard family tree to map family lines. A three-pronged symbol imitating the tree came to represent genealogy. Because it looked somewhat like the track of a crane’s foot, the symbol was called ““pied de grue” meaning “foot of the crane.” That phrase has come into our language as “pedigree.” • Wealthy people seldom had to do any labor, so they stayed indoors or in the shade. As a result, their complexions were very pale, and their veins showed through their skin. This gave us the word “blueblood.” • The Italian word for a drinking flask is fiasco. How did an Italian drinking flask come into our language meaning a total failure? Because when Italian glass blowers were creating a piece of fine crystal glassware but ruined it with a mistake, the only way some value could be salvaged was to turn it into a fiasco. Early experiments in Germany incorporated urine donated by a waitress named Barbara. Researchers combined her name with uric of uric acid to coin the term barbituric acid, now known as barbiturates. • The word “shrive” was a verb meaning to give a confession to a priest, and the word “shrift” was a noun meaning the confession itself. When prisoners were about to be executed, they were given the opportunity to confess their sins to a priest just before being killed. Sometimes the hangman was a little too eager to get on with the work, in which case the prisoner would not be given enough time to finish the confession. He would be given “short shrift.” Home of “Mission to Mars,” “Space • In the early days of the Norse tribes, ships Mountain,” and “Finding Nemo Voyage” were steered with a paddle, or board, hung over the right side of the ship.
