The XXXI Summer Olympic Games are being held August 5 - 21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. What better time for Tidbits to bring you the data on the history of this event! • The Rio Games are the first time in Olympic history that a South American country has hosted the Games. The decision for Rio was made in 2009, with the city triumphing over Chicago, Madrid, and Tokyo. The cost to Rio for hosting the games will be in the $95 million range. The official motto for this year’s game is “Live your passion.”

WAXING

• There are 33 different venues in four different areas of Rio for the games. There are 7.5 million tickets available, ranging in price from $40 for a seat at some swimming events to about $3,000 for a prime seat at the opening ceremony. The opening and closing ceremonies will be held at the city’s largest sporting venue, Maracana Stadium. Although the stadium’s official seating capacity is 78,000, during the 1950 World Cup final, more than 170,000 fans were packed into the arena. • The security force will be twice as large as that of the London 2012 Summer Games, with 85,000 soldiers and policemen drafted into service for the event. turn the page for more!

SUMMER OLYMPICS (continued): • Although Olympic Games were held in ancient Greece, the first modern Olympic Games were the Summer Olympics held in 1896, appropriately held in Athens, Greece. The modern games have only been cancelled three times – the 1916 games because of World War I -- and the 1940 and 1944 games because of World War II. • One city, London, has hosted the Summer Games three times – in 1908, 1948, and 2012. The Games have been held in the United States four times in three different cities – St. Louis in 1904, Los Angeles in 1932 and 1984, and Atlanta in 1996. • Only five countries have been represented at every modern Summer Olympics – Greece, Great Britain, France, Switzerland, and Australia. • For decades, the Summer and Winter Games were held in the same year. That changed after 1992, the last time they were scheduled as such. Since that time, the two Olympiads are staggered two years apart. • Canadian equestrian Ian Millar has appeared in more Olympic Games than any other athlete. Since 1972, Millar has competed in ten Summer Games, every Olympics until 2012, with the exception of the 1980 Moscow Games, boycotted by Canada. Although Millar has never won Olympic gold, he did win a gold medal in the 2015 Pan American Games. His only Olympic medal was a silver in 2008. • Swimmer Michael Phelps has won more Olympic medals than any other athlete, with a total of 22 won in three Olympiads. He is also the record-holder for most golds at 18. Up until 2008, U.S. swimmer Mark Spitz held the record for the most golds at any single Olympic Games, with seven first-place finishes at the 1972 Games in Munich. Phelps broke that record at the 2008 Games in Beijing.

SUMMER OLYMPICS (continued): • The only athlete in any sport to win the same Olympic event six times was Hungarian Aladar Gerevich, who competed in fencing. His first trip to the Olympics was to the 1932 Los Angeles Games at age 22, where he captured his first gold medal. He repeated his feat in 1936. After World War II, Gerevich won two golds in London in 1948, and in Helsinki’s 1952 Games, he won one of each, gold, silver, and bronze. Another gold followed in 1956. His final Olympic appearance was at the 1960 Games in Rome, when he was 50 years old, achieving his final gold. Oddly enough, Gerevich’s wife, son, and father-in-law were also Olympic medalists. • Only one person has won gold medals in both the Summer and Winter Olympics. In 1920, American Eddie Eagan was the light heavyweight boxing champ in Antwerp, Belgium. Although he entered the ring again in 1924 at the Paris Summer Games, he failed to get a medal. In 1932, at age 35, Eagan was a member of the four-man bobsled team at the Lake Placid Games. He had just taken up the sport three weeks before the Olympics, but achieved a gold medal. Eagan went on to attain the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army during World War II, after which he became an attorney, serving as southern New York’s assistant district attorney. • A Swedish marksman holds the record for the oldest man to compete in the Summer Olympiad. Oscar Swahn, who competed in the 1908, 1912, and 1920 Olympics, was nearly 73 years old in his final contest in 1920. He became the oldest gold medalist at the 1912 games, at age 64 years, 280 days. He took silver in 1920. • The 1900 and 1904 Games included the game of golf, which, after an absence of 112 years, returns to the Rio Games this year, featuring an 18-hole course.

Q: I have a Parker fountain pen that was used by my uncle during the 1930s. He was a banker and considered it his favorite writing instrument. It is the “Thrift Time” model in brown. What is it worth? -- Stan, Kent, Washington A: The first fountain pen was invented in 1830, but they were not really manufactured commercially until the 1880s, when a suitable metal for the tips was perfected. The first successful commercial fountain pen producers were Waterman (1884) and Parker (1888). Parker entered the market with a fountain pen named “Lucky Curve.” Vintage fountain pens are collectible, and some have become quite pricey. I found your pen referenced in “Collecting Pens” by Edward Kiersh and published by House of Collectibles. According to Kiersh, your Parker Thrift Time was produced in 1932 and is worth about $150. The Pen Collectors of America can be contacted at www.pencollectorsofamerica.com. ***

Q: I have a Mickey Mouse Club projector with films and in its original box. The box is falling apart. It is model 488, and I am curious if it has much value. -- Erna, Falls City, Texas A: Your projector was manufactured during the early 1950s by Stephens Products, a company based in Middletown, Connecticut. I found several of these projectors on eBay, most priced in the $75-$100 range. One featured the handcranked projector in its original box with 14 film strips, including ones featuring Hopalong Cassidy, Chip ‘n Dale and Pluto. It had a requested opening bid of $69. As this column was being written, no bids had been submitted. *** Q: I have my dad’s pocketwatch. It was made by Elgin. My problem is I would like to have it cleaned and don’t know how to go about this. -Norma, Decatur, Illinois A The Elgin National Watch Company was founded in 1864 in Elgin, Illinois, and produced more jeweled watches than any other company during its more than 90-year history. The company made many low-end watches, all the way up to its famous high-quality railroad grade. The railroad watches are especially collectible.

Although you didn’t specify the model or grade of your watch, it is best to have it professionally cleaned by a jeweler. • The skunk’s smelly spray is a yellow oil liquid containing sulfuric acid that is produced by the glands under its tail. While the spray is a well-known method of defense, it’s not what the animal uses first. Initially, it will growl, spit, fluff its fur, shake its tail, and stamp on the ground in an effort to defend itself or its young, and will only use the spray as a last resort. The animal actually hesitates to use its spray, as it only has enough for five or six uses, and it takes 10 days to produce another supply. • The skunk can blast an offender as far as 10 feet (3 m) away, with two glands that can shoot in different directions. The odor can be smelled by the human nose a mile (1.5 km) downwind. • Although a skunk can live up to seven years in the wild, most only live about a year. Their predators include coyotes, bobcats, and owls. Females birth between 2 and 10 babies a year. Those babies will stay with their mother in the nest for about two months before they head out to scavenge on their own. They don’t travel far during their lifetime, generally staying within an area of 200 acres. • A full-grown skunk will weigh between 7 and 14 lbs. (3.2 and 6.4 kg).

X marks the spot! This week, Tidbits “x-amines” words beginning with the letter X. • The prefix xeno-, taken from the Greek language, refers to something that is strange, foreign, or different. It makes sense that a xenophobe is a person who is fearful of strangers or foreigners.

• In 1937, an American law student named Chester Carlson invented a copying process based on electrostatic energy. Because Lewiston_Antique_Mall_FB.indd 1 6/28/16 the process was called xerography, which translates from the Greek for “dry writing,” Carlson’s patent application used the word “Xerox” as the name of his new creation. Carlson licensed his invention to the Haloid Photographic Company, founded in 1906, a firm that manufactured photographic paper and equipment. In 1958, the company name was * On Aug. 24, 79 A.D., Mount Vesuvius erupts in changed to Haloid Xerox, and by 1961, was southern Italy, devastating the prosperous Roman known simply as the Xerox Corporation. this engraving is known as a xylograph. The same root translates to the word xylophagous, which indicates a species that feeds on wood. • Wooden bars that are struck by mallets make up the musical instrument known as the xylophone. Each bar, often made of rosewood, is tuned to a pitch of the musical scale. Several cultures claim to be the originator of the instrument, with one explanation that it came to Africa around 500 A.D., brought by Polynesians. Other evidence indicates a type of xylophone from 2000 B.C. in ancient China. The word is a combination of Greek words, xylon, meaning “wood,” and phone, meaning “sound.”

* On Aug. 22, 1864, the International Red Cross is founded in Geneva after being advocated by Swiss humanitarian Jean-Henri Dunant. The international emblem, a red cross on a white background, is the Swiss flag in reverse. * On Aug. 25, 1875, Matthew Webb, a 27-yearold merchant navy captain, becomes the first known person to successfully swim the English Channel. Webb accomplished the 21-mile crossing, which really entailed 39 miles of swimming because of tidal currents, in just under 22 hours. * On Aug. 27, 1883, the most powerful volcanic eruption in recorded history occurs on Krakatau, a small volcanic island in Indonesia. Heard 3,000 miles away, the explosions threw 5 cubic miles of earth 50 miles into the air, created 120-foot tsunamis and killed 36,000 people. * On Aug. 23, 1926, the death of silent-screen idol Rudolph Valentino at age 31 sends his fans into a hysterical state of mass mourning. Some 100,000 mourners lined the streets outside the New York City church where funeral services were held. * On Aug. 26, 1957, the Soviet Union announces that it has successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of being fired “into any part of the world.” Following his election in 1960, President John F. Kennedy made missile development and the space program priorities. * On Aug. 28, 1968, at the Democratic National Convention, tens of thousands of protesters against the Vietnam War battle thousands of police in the streets of Chicago. Fights also broke out on the convention floor, and delegates and reporters were beaten and knocked to the ground. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

THE “X” FACTOR (continued): • Do you suffer from xeroderma? If you have abnormal dryness of the skin, this term applies to you! • From the 16th to the 19th centuries, pirates on the Mediterranean Sea sailed a small threemasted vessel with square and triangular sails that enabled them to sail faster than their prospective victims. Depending on the size of the ship, known as a xebec, between 16 and 40 guns might be mounted on the vessel. • The word xenia has a variety of meanings. 10:54 PM To the ancient Greeks, it was the concept of hospitality, generosity, and courtesy shown to those far from home. To the botanist, it’s the effect of pollen on a seed. And to those in Ohio, it’s the county seat of Greene County, a community about 21 miles (34 km) from Dayton. • Xystus is an architectural term, referring to a long, covered portico, or main entrance, of ancient Greek gymnasiums. Here, athletes would exercise during inclement weather. To the Romans, the xystus was the garden walkway in front of the porticoes, where they planted flower beds. • Physicians are familiar with two unusual “X” words, xyster and xiphisterna. The xyster is a surgical instrument used for scraping bones, while the xiphisterna refers to the cartilage at the lower end of the body’s sternum, that long flat bone located at the center of the chest. • The Greek word xanthos translates “yellow,” and several of our words use it for a prefix. Xanthophyll is a yellow pigment found along with cholorophyll in green plants. Plants with yellow stems are xanthopous. To those suffering from the abnormal vision condition known as xanthopsia, everything they see seems to have a yellow hue. NEWLY REMODELED!
