July is Cell Phone Courtesy Month, and time for Tidbits to delve into the history of this device, one that’s in the hands of 95% of Americans. • While standing on Sixth Avenue in New York City in April of 1973, Motorola employee Martin Cooper made the world’s first mobile phone call. The recipient of the call was his counterpart at AT&T, Motorola’s competitor and biggest company in the world. Cooper, who has become known as “the father of the cellphone,” was an inventor and general manager of Motorola’s Communications Systems Division. Cooper’s phone weighed 2 lbs. (0.91 kg) and required 10 hours to charge for a talk time of 30 minutes. • It took 10 years to bring the portable cell phone to market. In 1983, Motorola introduced its 1.1-lb. (0.5 kg) DynaTAC 8000X phone for consumer use with a hefty price tag of $3,995 (about $9,300 in today’s dollars). It took seven years to reach one million cell phone subscribers. • You may not recognize the name Scott Jones, but thanks to him, voicemail became available on mobile phones in 1986. Jones was a 26-yearold research scientist at MIT when he came up with the idea while enjoying a pizza with friends. turn the page for more!

FATHERLY FACTS (continued):
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta MONITOR, SPEAK, PLAY WITH PET REMOTELY DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I work most of the week from an office downtown, and only get one day to work at home and be around my dog. She does have a dog walker who takes her out near lunchtime when I’m not there, but I worry about her being alone at home. Is there any way I can monitor her while I’m out, or even talk to her? -- Brian in Alpharetta, Georgia DEAR BRIAN: There’s quite a bit of technology coming onto the market that is aimed at helping you spend more time with your pet -even when you’re not home. If you already have a home security system with cameras installed that you can monitor remotely, aim a camera at your dog’s favorite hangout spot to monitor what she’s doing all day. With new products like Pet Cube, you can not only monitor her during the day, but speak to her and even deliver treats through an app on your phone. Another product, PlayDate, allows you to remotely control a ball through a mobile app and your home’s Wi-Fi system. Activity trackers for pets are another new product on the market. Similar to a Fitbit or other smart watches, sensors worn on your dog’s collar can track her movements and activity levels, so you can find out whether she’s getting enough exercise during the day. While none of these are a good substitute for quality face time with your dog, they can bring you some peace of mind when you’re away at work.
• About 95% of Americans own some kind of cell phone, and 77% have smartphones. About half of American smartphone owners have had to cancel or shut off their service for a time due to the high cost of maintaining it. • The Nokia 1100 was launched in 2003 and was discontinued in 2009. During that time, more than 250 million devices were sold, making it the world’s best-selling electronics gadget in history. • Apple introduced its first iPhone to the public in 2007, with its touch screen interface and virtual keyboard, with sales of 1.4 million units that first year. By the end of 2014, more than 590 million iPhones had been sold. The iPhone accounts for more than 60% of Apple’s total revenue, more sales than everything else Microsoft offers combined. • When the iPhone 4 was introduced in 2012, Apple was experiencing sales of 340,000 phones per day. Within 14 weeks, more than 37 million phones had been sold. That’s 262 phones every minute, 4 phones per second. • Although the sales of iPhones have been astronomical, 88% of all mobile phones are not iPhones. Androids actually have a larger market share. • The average person unlocks his or her smartphone about 110 times each day. What do we do with our mobile phones? While you might think the most common use is calling or texting, it’s actually checking the time! About 87 hours are spent each month by the average American browsing on a smartphone. A recent survey shows that users in the age group 18 to 29 report they do about 5 surveys a week on their phone. Nearly half of that study group admitted to using their phone to avoid interacting with people around them. (continued on next page)

CELL PHONES (continued): • A whole new group of phobias has developed since mobile phones have been introduced. Telephonobia is the fear of making or receiving phone calls, while nomophobia is the fear of being out of contact with others because of a lost phone, dead battery, or lack of signal. Frigensophobics, fear that their cell phone will damage their brain. There’s even a name for that feeling you get when hear or feel your cell ringing when it really isn’t – ringxity or fauxcellarm. • Cell phones are an expensive commodity, but what claims fame as the world’s most expensive? A British jeweler named Stuart Hughes has created the iPhone 4 Diamond Rose with a price tag of nearly $8.2 million. The cell features 500 individual diamonds adding up to 100 carats, a single 7.4-carat pink diamond on the home button, and the Apple logo is rose gold with 53 diamonds. • Cell phones certainly aren’t without their dangers. More than 60% of Americans admit they text while driving, an action that renders their reactions one-third slower than being under the influence of alcohol. Some users report insomnia, headaches, and confusion, supposedly from mobile phone radiation. In 2015, more people died while taking selfies than by shark attacks. Most deaths are the result of falls, although many have been killed by moving vehicles while snapping photos. In Yellowstone Park, at least five tourists were gored by bison while attempting to take pictures with the animals. Cell users have reported nearly losing a hand while posing with a rattlesnake, and others have died while snapping a selfie holding a loaded gun. • How convenient! Residents of Malaysia can legally divorce a spouse via text message!

UNUSUAL PLANTS:
SUNDEWS
by Samantha Weaver
* It was American journalist and political satirist P.J. O’Rourke who made the following sage observation: “No drug, not even alcohol, causes the fundamental ills of society. If we’re looking for the source of our troubles, we shouldn’t test people for drugs, we should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed and love of power.” * If you’re like many Americans, you celebrate the Fourth of July by cooking out. In fact, it’s estimated that in the United States, 150 million hot dogs and 700 million pounds of chicken are consumed on that single day. * Those who study such things say that the milk from a mother hippopotamus is pink. * The Declaration of Independence was signed by 56 men from 13 colonies, but only one of them -- John Hancock -- actually signed it on July 4, 1776. Only two signers went on to become president of the United States: John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. In a striking coincidence, both men died on the same day, July 4, 1826 – exactly 50 years after the adoption of the Declaration. Jefferson died first, at 12:50 p.m., at Monticello, his home in Virginia. At 6:20 that evening, at his home in Quincy, Massachusetts, John Adams died. Unaware of Jefferson’s death earlier that day, Adams acknowledged his longtime friend and rival with his final words: “Thomas Jefferson survives.” * It was once believed that people with the bacterial infection cholera were suffering the wrath of God for their sins. In fact, the disease’s name comes from the Spanish word for anger.

This week, Tidbits turns its attention to one of the largest varieties of carnivorous plants, the sundew. • There are nearly 200 species of sundews, commonly known as Drosera, with the highest concentration found in Australia, home to almost half of the varieties. South America and Africa each have 20+ species, with Europe, Asia, and North America accounting for a few. The plant especially likes bogs, swamps, and marshes. North America’s four species are mainly found along the east coast, the Gulf Coast, and the Florida panhandle. • The flowers of the sundew are lovely rosettes that attract pollinators. The size varies between a tiny 0.4 inch (1 cm) and 39 inches (100 cm). The climbing species can reach a height of nearly 10 feet (3 meters). • The leaves of the sundew plant are covered with spiky tentacles, with the tip of each containing a nectar gland that secretes a sticky, sugary digestive enzyme. The name of the plant comes from the shiny drops of the gummy substance that resembles a drop of morning dew. Insects landing on the leaf get stuck in the “dew,” and as they struggle to free themselves, the tentacles wrap around the bugs, eventually suffocating them, about a 15-minute process. Each gland performs three functions – it attracts the insect, ensnares it, and then provides the enzymes necessary for the digestion process, absorbing the nutrients necessary for survival. • Even the miniscule legs of a small gnat are enough to set the trigger hairs of the tentacle into motion. DEAR DR. ROACH: Ten years ago, I had many episodes of rapid heartbeats, diagnosed as atrial fibrillation. My cardiologist put me on a medication, which I took for a couple of years, but the A fib came back. The doctor changed my medication to sotalol, but that didn’t help either. I read that low magnesium could be a cause of atrial fibrillation, and I started taking calcium, magnesium and potassium, and have not an episode of rapid heartbeat for four years. I went back to my doctor, who told me it was a crazy idea. I haven’t seen him in four years. It seems a shame that we hear of so many treatments for A fib when it might be stopped with a simple supplement. -- S.Z. ANSWER: Well, it certainly isn’t a crazy idea, but low magnesium isn’t the only cause of atrial fibrillation, and supplementing magnesium and other electrolytes will not stop atrial fibrillation in most people. However, low blood magnesium levels are a recognized risk factor for developing atrial fibrillation, and giving magnesium during heart surgery reduces the risk of developing A fib afterward in some (but not all) studies, so there certainly is something to it. Also, oral magnesium can make other medications for A fib work more effectively. Since oral magnesium is safe and cheap, I think it is reasonable to try. However, I am concerned because atrial fibrillation can go on in some people without their being aware of it, and the major risk of A fib is blood clots. I would recommend that you continue to get evaluated periodically to make sure your heart rate is persistently normal. I also would try to find a physician who is willing to work with you on combining “alternative” treatments like magnesium with traditional therapy if needed. READERS: Atrial fibrillation is quite common, affecting some 2 million Americans, and becomes more common with age. To learn more, order the booklet on Heartbeat Irregularities by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 107W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. *** DR. ROACH WRITES: I wrote a column awhile back about a man who kept falling, whose doctor wasn’t able to find the cause after a thorough search. I had suggested checking his vitamin D level, but many readers wrote in to tell me about conditions that were missed in themselves or in a loved one. I thought that a few of these were worth sharing. Many people wrote that a physical therapist (and perhaps an occupational therapist as well) would be important, and I fully agree. I have found physical and occupational therapists to be among my most treasured but underappreciated colleagues, and almost always, they are able to improve people’s function. Other suggestions included looking for low oxygen levels, and checking whether the blood pressure drops too much upon standing. One person wrote in to note that walkers and wheelchairs can decrease activity and lead to loss of strength and balance. Another recommended looking for hidden infections, such as in the urine. These should have been checked for. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com.
SUNDEWS (continued): • Because sundews can obtain extra nutrients from insects, they can survive in poor soil where other plants can’t. If adequate insects aren’t available, the sundew can obtain some nutrition from the soil, enough to survive for long periods of time. Certain varieties are able to live 50 years. • Although the insect-catching process is similar to that of the Venus Flytrap, the sundew’s mechanism is more complex, because its leaf can bend in nearly any direction depending on the size and shape of the bug. After it is finished with its meal, the leaf returns to its original size and shape. • Since sundews are a beautiful plant, some folks like to cultivate them as ornamental plants. This can prove difficult in many ways, first and foremost, in the problem of even obtaining them. Many gardeners feed them with fish food pellets, live insects when possible, and bloodworms. If the plant doesn’t have sufficient light, it will fail to produce its characteristic dew. Most species require absolutely pure water, free of nutrients, salts, or minerals, as these substances can stunt their growth or kill them. It’s recommended that growers use only distilled water or rain water. • Since the 12th century, some European sundews have been used as a medicinal plant, said to cure coughs and respiratory ailments. Many modern-day naturopaths and herbalists advocate sundew tea for bronchitis, whopping cough, lung infections, stomach ulcers, and asthma, and have shown effectiveness as an anti-inflammatory. Sundews are an ingredient in more than 200 registered medications today. Rock Hard Power Washing THE BEST FOR LESS

Visit the community of Sherwood, Oregon on July 14 and 15, and you can take part in Robin Hood Days, a tribute to the legendary English outlaw, featuring archery and sword fighting tournaments, along with concerts by a medieval orchestra. Is this folk hero fact or fiction? Tidbits lets you decide! • Robin Hood is renowned for his practice of taking from the rich and giving to the poor. According to legend, he was a supporter of the late-12th-century king Richard the Lionheart (King Richard I), who left England to fight in the Crusades. During Richard’s absence, his unpopular brother John set himself up as ruler, creating political turmoil, an action that drove Robin Hood to rebel against the oppressive establishment. • The first reference to Robin is in a 1377 poem. Ballads of the 1400s tell of his exceptional archery skills and his bitter hostility toward the Sheriff of Nottingham. These narratives included his associates Little John, Much the Miller’s Son, and Will Scarlet, but not Friar Tuck or his love interest Maid Marian. A 1427 play included the role of Robin Hood. Poet Alexander Barclay was the first to mention Robin and Marian together, around 1514. • During the 1400s, the English began celebrating May Day with plays and games centered around a Robin Hood character and members of his band. May Day festivities of the 16th century introduced Maid Marian as the Queen of May. • What was Robin Hood’s social status? Some tales depict him as a yeoman, a term that meant “neither a knight nor a peasant…but something in between.” Writings in the late 1500s presented him as a wealthy aristocrat, the Earl of Huntingdon, Robert Fitzooth, who had a grave disagreement with King John and was forced to flee to the safe haven of Sherwood Forest. Far too many of us say no to help when we’re discharged from the hospital or rehab, even though studies have shown that too often we end up even worse off when we refuse home health care. Why do we make these choices? * The situation isn’t correctly explained to us. Worse is, if the hospital doesn’t understand the Medicare guidelines and doesn’t offer us home health care. There’s a difference between “home care” and “home health care.” One involves skilled care and the other personal care. If we’re on Medicare and have functional limitations, Medicare will pay for home health care services. * We don’t know who is paying for it. * Discharge information is confusing, especially if it involves new medications. * We don’t want strangers in our homes. (Or we’ll agree to it while we’re still in the hospital, just to get them to leave us alone, but once care workers show up, we won’t let them in.) * We don’t think we need help or that relatives will help us. * We had a negative experience in the past with home health care. What happens if we refuse care? A fair percentage of us will be readmitted to the hospital within 30 to 60 days. We might be in worse shape than the first time we went in, especially if we don’t take the medications correctly or we end up with an infection. Be smart. If you’re being discharged from the hospital or rehab, ask whether you’re getting a “nurse visit” within 24 hours. If you get a blank look, start asking more questions. At the same time, if you’re told you will get home health care and you don’t like it, accept the situation at least for a few weeks. Your health depends on it. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.*

It was a rude awakening for Florida resident Celina Aarons when she received a cell phone bill for $201,000. Celina’s two deaf-mute brothers traveled to Canada for two weeks, and she neglected to switch her plan to international. When one brother’s text message and video limit was reached, the phones went into roaming charges. Fortunately, upon hearing of the situation, her provider reduced the charges to $2500.
