HELEN TAFT
• Helen “Nellie” Taft, during a visit to Tokyo, greatly enjoyed the annual cherry blossom festival. When her husband William Howard Taft became the 27th president in 1908, she was determined not only to beautify the White House, but also to improve the city as well. Cherry blossoms were just what she needed. Unfortunately, a search of every nursery in the U.S. turned up only 100 or so saplings. Undaunted, Mrs. Taft contacted the mayor of Tokyo, who graciously donated 3,000 saplings. However, when they arrived they were found to be infected with an agricultural pest and were destroyed. When the Tokyo mayor heard, he joked about George Washington being the first president to set an example of destroying cherry trees— then he sent a new shipment. Today, Nellie Taft’s city improvement program is still enjoyed by millions of people. • Nellie Taft was the first First Lady to ride in her husband’s inauguration parade; the first to publish her memoirs; the first to own and drive a car; the first to support women’s suffrage; the first to smoke cigarettes; and the first to fight for federal safety standards in the workplace. ELEANOR ROOSEVELT
Five plastic bottles (PET) recycled provides enough fiber to create one square foot of carpet or enough fiber fill to fill one ski jacket. Americans throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour. Recycling one ton of plastic bottles saves the equivalent energy usage of a two person household for one year.

Residential, Commercial & Industrial Service Upgrades, Fuses to Breakers
• Franklin Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt were distant cousins who knew each other from childhood. When they got married in 1905, Eleanor’s uncle, President Theodore Roosevelt, gave away the bride. • Eleanor championed civil rights causes while she was First Lady. She attended the Southern Conference on Human Welfare in Alabama in 1939. When she found that the audience was segregated, with blacks on one side and whites on the other, she protested by putting her chair into the center aisle that separated the races. • Soon after Eleanor arrived in the White House, she hired a professional cook to spend a few days teaching her staff how to prepare special dishes. One day, Eleanor’s German shepherd rushed up and bit the cook on the ankle. Eleanor, running in to find out what the commotion was about, declared, “That settles it! From now on, we will have iodine kept in this room!” • While entertaining some Russian dignitaries, Eleanor took them to see a Fourth of July parade. The Russians were accustomed to seeing great displays of military strength during their own parades. When a group of young men marched by in uniforms, they enquired, “Military?” “No,” she replied, “Boy Scouts.” Then another group of uniformed men marched by. “Military?” they asked. “No,” she said. “Volunteer fire department.” Next a car drove by, and inside it were four aging veterans, stuffed into uniforms they had long ago outgrown. “Military!” she announced triumphantly. • Eleanor Roosevelt was the first presidential spouse to hold regular press conferences, write a daily newspaper column, write a monthly magazine column, host a weekly radio show, and speak at a national party convention. LADY BIRD JOHNSON
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta SNAKEBITE VACCINE BUYS TIMES FOR DOGS DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I am commenting on your answer to the owners worried about their dog being bitten by a snake while on vacation out West. The rattlesnake vaccine is actually only $64; the treatment is well over $1,000 per vial of antivenin. If a pet has the vaccine, it is highly possible that it may not need the antivenin. The vaccine should be given to all dogs at risk for snakebite. Please advise your readers to contact their local veterinarian. -- Rebecca O., Trinity County, California DEAR REBECCA: Thank you for the correction! I did a little more digging and found detailed advice at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine’s website. The snakebite vaccine itself, developed in the early 2000s, is quite inexpensive compared to treatment for a rattlesnake bite. That can run well above $1,000, as you noted. It’s important to keep in mind, as the website notes, that the vaccine isn’t complete protection. Its greatest benefit is that it buys your dog time after a snakebite so that you can get it to a veterinarian for emergency treatment with antivenin. According to the manufacturer, a vaccinated dog bitten by a poisonous snake needs to get to the vet within 12 hours for further treatment. Frequent boosters (every 4 to 6 months) may be required. It’s important to keep in mind that snakebites are generally very rare at national parks, especially if pets and people stay within trail boundaries. Parks have leash requirements so that your pet stays within your sight and control at all times, further minimizing the risk of a bite. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com. • Claudia Alta “Lady Bird” Johnson, wife of Democratic President Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ), loved the TV Western series “Gunsmoke” and never missed an episode. She excused herself from dinner one evening, explaining that she had a “previous engagement.” She was later disappointed to find that James Arness, who played Matt Dillon on the program, Republican. • Lady Bird was unsuccessful in her attempts to get LBJ to lose weight. One night she was awakened by the sound of clinking metal, and discovered it was coming from the kitchen, where she caught LBJ red-handed with a metal spoon and a bowl of pudding. The next day, LBJ instructed an aide to go buy him a wooden spoon. • In 1964, Lady Bird was travelling from Cleveland to Washington, DC. Her secretary called ahead to a Howard Johnson’s restaurant to make reservations for Mrs. Johnson. After they left, a reporter interviewed the waitress. “How did it feel to serve Mrs. Johnson?” “I was pretty nervous,” replied the waitress. “Have you ever met a First Lady before?” inquired the reporter. “First Lady?” cried the waitress. “That was Mrs. Lyndon Johnson? I thought it was Mrs. Howard Johnson!” • In 1967, LBJ was giving a speech which dragged on as the audience grew restless. Lady Bird slipped him a note that said, “Close soon.” LBJ held the paper up, then read it aloud. After the laughter died, he continued his speech as usual. • Due to a mix-up, Ike and Mamie Eisenhower received an engraved invitation to attend their own inaugural ball in 1953. Laughing, Mamie asked Ike what she should do about it. “Turn it down,” he said. “Tell them we’ve got another engagement.”

continued mother explained to her that she was the only little girl in the entire world who had a mark just like that, and so she was very special and unique. She went back the next day with her head held high. • Betty Ford inspired both rage and admiration when she was interviewed on “60 Minutes” in 1975. Among the things she said were that she supported the Supreme Court’s decision legalizing abortion; she didn’t favor premarital sex but felt it might lower the divorce rate; that she might have tried marijuana if she had been a member of that generation; and that if she found out her daughter was having an affair, she wouldn’t condone it but neither would she throw her daughter out of the house. Preachers and editors across the country condemned her for her views, but others praised her honesty and open-mindedness. • In one room stood a golden statue of a winged woman with a bowl on her head and an outstretched hand. Every time Betty Ford passed the statue, she would place something in the outstretched hand, such as a cigarette, which the White House staff removed.

• When Warren Harding began courting Florence Kling, her father disapproved because he was of a lower social standing. Warren was the editor of the local paper at the time. When they married in 1891, Florence’s father boycotted the wedding and refused to speak to his daughter for the next seven years. It was 15 years before he ever set foot in his son-in-law’s house, even though they lived in the same town. Presumably he changed his mind when Warren was elected 29th president in 1921.

Q: I have three old magazines that are from
1950. I have the April and December issues of McCall’s and also a Look magazine. They are in good to fair condition. I would appreciate any comments you have. -- Suzanne, Grosse Ile, Michigan
A: Even though your magazines would be
on Social Security if they were people, they really don’t have much value. Most post-war McCall’s sell in the $5 to $10 range. Your magazines should include a column written by former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Look magazine, depending on what is on its cover, is worth perhaps a little more. You mentioned your magazines are not in excellent condition and this also could be a problem, since most collectors like publications that are pristine. ***
Q: I have inherited a bowl that has been identified as being Monart. What exactly is Monart? -- Sue, Arizona
A: John Moncrief, a Scottish glassmaker,
was fascinated by the technique of suspending colored enamels within molten glass during the glassmaking process. He opened a business in Perth, Scotland, in about 1924, and he called the glassware he created Monart. Typical prices for Monart are a red mottled vase, $130, and a green/orange/aventurine bowl in clear, yellow and orange mottle, $175. Not many pieces are found in this country. ***

A: You are near Phoenix, where there are
dozens of excellent coin and stamp dealers for you to contact. I suggest you get two or three opinions. One of the better price guides is The Krause-Minkus Standard Catalogue of U.S. Stamps, edited by Fred Baumann and published by Krause Books. ***

SEQUOIAS (cont’d) • The wood of the sequoia is very brittle so it is not a valuable lumber species. In spite of this, it was nevertheless extensively logged around the turn of the 20th century. When a sequoia was felled in 1853, it was found to be 1,244 years old. The stump was so large it was used as a dance floor. The wood was so fragile it could be used only for things such as shingles, fence posts, or matchsticks, and was therefore worth very little. Once Sequoia National Park was established, tourism offered a bigger economic boost than logging. • The trunk of the General Sherman tree could theoretically be turned into almost 120 miles of standard sized lumber planks. A branch that fell from the tree in 1978 had a diameter greater than six feet and was at least 140 feet long, meaning this single branch was larger than any tree in the United States east of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountain ranges. • In prehistoric times, the sequoia was found throughout the Northern Hemisphere, but today it’s found only in about 75 scattered groves throughout Northern California. Giant sequoias have extremely exacting climate requirements, so specific that they grow naturally only in a narrow 260-mile strip of mixed conifer forest on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, primarily between 5,000 and 7,000 feet in elevation. • Many people walking around the base of giant sequoias can cause them harm, because it compacts the soil around their shallow roots and prevents the trees from getting enough water. • Though there is a story commonly told that the sequoia was named after a Cherokee Indian who invented an alphabet, there is little proof behind the myth. More likely it sprang from the Latin “sequi” (meaning “to follow” as in “sequence”) referring to the sequential number of seeds in the pine cones.

• Around the year 1776, the Cherokee daughter of a chief named Wu-Teh and a white trader from Virginia named Nathaniel Gist had a baby boy in the area around what is now Tennessee. They named the boy Sequoyah and he grew up to become an accomplished hunter. However, an accident rendered him lame, so he turned his attention to more sedentary pursuits. He married a Cherokee woman, had children, and became an accomplished silversmith and a talented blacksmith. • When he served as a soldier during the War of 1812, he noted that the soldiers around him were able to read letters from home, write to their sweethearts, follow written military orders, exchange news, and read books, all by using the white man’s system of “talking leaves.” He thought that the Cherokee nation was at a great disadvantage because they had no written language. After learning to speak and write several languages, he started thinking about his native tongue, Cherokee. • Over the course of several years, he broke down the phonetic sounds of the Cherokee language into 86 parts, and assigned them 86 symbols, creating a very simple alphabet for a language that was previously only spoken. He borrowed and modified symbols and letters from various languages, as well as making up his own. He taught his six-year-old daughter this alphabet in less than a week. • For his trouble, his town council accused him of witchcraft. He was taken to trial, where he explained that the marks on the paper represented words of the Cherokee language. • He proved the effectiveness of his new alphabet by having the elders dictate to him detailed messages, out of ear-shot of his daughter. Then he wrote the messages down. Next he gave the notes to his little girl, who read it back to the elders word for word. They were convinced. (continued)

ANSWERS TO PUZZLES Frozen Fruit Yogurt
It’s so simple! In just 10 minutes you can make delicious frozen yogurt by blending your favorite frozen fruit with plain yogurt! And it’s low-fat! 12 ounces frozen strawberries, cherries or peaches (about 2 3/4 cups), or 10 ounces frozen raspberries (about 2 1/3 cups) 1 container (8 ounces) plain low-fat yogurt 1/2 cup sugar 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1/8 teaspoon almond extract 1. In food processor, with knife blade attached, blend frozen fruit until fruit resembles finely shaved ice, stopping processor occasionally to scrape down sides. If fruit is not finely shaved, dessert will not be smooth. 2. Add yogurt, sugar, lemon juice and almond extract, and process just until mixture is smooth and creamy, scraping down sides occasionally. Serve immediately. Or, spoon into freezer-safe containers and freeze to serve later; let stand at room temperature 10 minutes to soften slightly before serving. Makes about 2 1/2 cups.

MIS DON’T
SEQUOYAH (cont’d) • Soon Sequoyah’s entire tribe could read and write their own language. As a result, the history, culture, and spiritual practices of the tribe were preserved. • By 1828 the tribe was publishing the “Cherokee Phoenix,” the first national bi-lingual newspaper, and the first Indian newspaper printed in the U.S. Later they started printing religious pamphlets, educational materials, and legal documents. • Shortly afterwards, Sequoyah was forced with the rest of his tribe off their ancestral homelands in the Southeast onto a reservation in Oklahoma, when Andrew Jackson’s Indian Removal Act of 1830 demanded that Muscogee, Seminole, Chickasaw, and Choctaw nations relocate. Over 4,000 people died of starvation, disease, and injury along the Trail of Tears during the forced migration. • Sequoyah eventually constructed a cabin for himself near present-day Sallisaw, Oklahoma, which still stands and is open to the public. • He later became a tribal leader and an envoy to Washington, D.C. In recognition of his contributions, the Cherokee Nation awarded Sequoyah a silver medal and an annual stipend, which his widow continued to receive even after his death in 1845. • Today, the language is spoken and written by an estimated 20,000 Cherokee in northeastern Oklahoma and another 5,000 near the Qualla Reservation in North Carolina. • Sam Houston, governor of Texas, said, “Your invention of the alphabet is worth more to your people than two bags full of gold in the hands of every Cherokee.” Sequoyah is thought to be the first person ever to create a written language on his own. He brought his people the gift of literacy and communication without educators, books, or cost.
