Come along with Tidbits as we visit Disney World! A NEW WONDER WORLD • In 1955, Walt Disney opened Disneyland in Anaheim, California. It was a success, but Walt noticed that fewer than 5% of visitors came from east of the Mississippi River which is where 75% of the population lived. Four years after Disneyland opened, Walt Disney decided that what he really needed was a bigger, better version of Disneyland in the eastern U.S.: Disney World. • Florida was already known as a vacation hot spot. There was plenty of cheap vacant swamp land located in the middle of the state where it was sheltered from the worst of the hurricanes. There was a good airport in Orlando and the local highway system was well-developed. It was far enough away from the shores to avoid competition with the beaches. The weather was good year-round. • In 1963 the Disney Company started buying up vacant land in the Orlando area in secret, using dummy corporations such as the M.T. Lott Investment Corp. to avoid price-gouging. Over 43 square miles were purchased for just $5 million dollars. That’s about the size of the city of San Francisco. It’s twice the size of Manhattan. Disney wanted to have plenty of room to expand. (continued on next page)

• The word xenia has a variety of meanings. To the ancient Greeks, it was the concept of hospitality, generosity, and courtesy shown to those far from home. To the botanist, it’s Pageeffect 2 the of pollen on a seed. And to those in Ohio, it’s the county seat of Greene County, a community about 21 miles (34 km) from Dayton. • Xystus is an architectural term, referring to a long, covered portico, or main entrance, of ancient Greek gymnasiums. Here, athletes would exercise during inclement weather. To the Romans, the xystus was the garden walkway in front of the porticoes, where they planted flower beds. • Physicians are familiar with two unusual “X” words, xyster and xiphisterna. The xyster is a surgical instrument used for scraping bones, while the xiphisterna refers to the cartilage at the lower end of the body’s sternum, that long flat bone located at the center of the chest. • The Greek word xanthos translates “yellow,” and several of our words use it for a prefix. Xanthophyll is a yellow pigment found along with cholorophyll in green plants. Plants with yellow stems are xanthopous. To those suffering from the abnormal vision condition known as xanthopsia, everything they see seems to have a yellow hue.

DISNEY WORLD (cont’d) • Walt Disney died on December 15, 1966, before construction began. His brother Roy Disney took over the project. The Magic Kingdom opened for business in 1971. That was followed by Epcot Center in 1982, Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 1989, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 1998. Today, Walt Disney World is the most visited vacation resort in the world, with an average annual attendance of over 52 million. • Roy Disney died at age 78 in 1971, less than three months after the property opened. AMAZING CONSTRUCTION • There’s a system of tunnels underneath the Magic Kingdom called Utilidors (for “utility corridors”) where all the secret and unsightly stuff happens: supplies brought in, trash taken out, props are stored, costumes are cleaned, etc. Although the Utilidor appears to be underground, that’s an illusion. The land was too swampy to build underground, so it’s actually the first floor of the compound, and the entire resort is built on top. When visitors are standing in front of Cinderella Castle, they may feel like they are standing at ground level, but they are actually on the 3rd floor of a gigantic building. • The daily fireworks display at the Magic Kingdom costs about $33,000 to put on, making Disney the largest consumer of fireworks in the world. • When you take a walk down Main Street and look at Cinderella’s castle, you might notice that the “bricks” get smaller the higher up the castle goes. It’s called “forced perspective.” The castle looks a little taller than it would if all the bricks were the same size. • Main Street in the Magical Kingdom is designed using forced perspective. When guest arrive in the morning, Main Street looks extremely long as it stretches towards Cinderella’s Castle. Once guests reach the castle and turn around to leave the park, Main Street looks very short as it heads towards the exit. (continued on next page)

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

KEEPING SMALL PETS SAFE FROM COYOTES DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Yesterday we had a very scary incident in our backyard. I let our Llasa Apso, “Cherie,” run free, knowing that she wouldn’t wander into the woods as long as I was on the back porch, watching her. I was reading the newspaper when Cherie started barking. Looking up, I saw two coyotes at the edge of the woods, slowly approaching her. I ran toward them, waving my arms and yelling like a crazy person. The coyotes took one look at me and disappeared into the woods. I picked up Did you hear about the family who got stuck Cherie and brought her inside. • The water on the Jungle Cruise is dyed green in order to make it appear much deeper than it actually is. It also disguises the tracks that the boats travel on, as well as hiding trash. • The telegraph message at the train station is tapping out Walt Disney’s speech at Disneyland’s opening in Morse code. • When in queue for Pirates of the Caribbean, note that the two skeletons playing chess have died playing because the chess game is at a stalemate that nobody can win. • While standing in line at Splash Mountain, guests may notice bird houses in the trees. If they pay careful attention, they may eavesdrop on the birds inside those bird houses and listen to them bickering. • The Magic Carpets of Aladdin features a camel that spits water at passing guests. An employee sits near the camel pressing the button whenever a guest is in range. (continued on next page)

• The colored concrete walkways in the Magic Kingdom seem to correspond to each section but are actually colored because Kodak and Disney found that light reflecting off colored concrete creates more vivid photographs. • The brownish winding path in Liberty Square is meant to represent raw sewage that flowed down the streets of Colonial America, since indoor plumbing wasn’t yet invented. • Throughout the resort there are thousands of “hidden Mickeys” worked into the designs: upholstery, artwork, wallpaper, flowerbeds, tile, and so on have subtle silhouettes of Mickey hidden in them. There’s one hidden Mickey you can only see once a year: Inside the Little Mermaid ride at Fantasyland, workers drilled three holes in the ceiling that become the perfect Mickey at noon on November 18, which is Mickey’s birthday. If you’re at that spot, the sun will shine through those holes and create a three-circle Mickey image on the wall. There is a streetlamp in Tomorrowland with three round hooded lights. At a certain times of the day it will cast a Mickey shadow on the ground. • The Disney Transportation System is the third largest bus system in Florida with over 290 buses.

• It annoyed William Spencer that every morning when he went to pick up the newspaper from his front porch, he’d find it had blown all over his yard in Alliance, Ohio. The windier it was, the farther the newspaper would fly. It was 1923 and Spencer decided something should be done. • Spencer knew that the shipyard of the Goodyear Rubber Company in Akron had heaps of discarded inner tubes lying around. He brought home a bunch of those inner tubes, and cut them into strips. The wrist-size stretchy strips of rubber were perfect for wrapping around a rolled-up newspaper, making it easier to throw onto a front porch and harder to blow away in the wind. • He took his idea to the Akron Beacon Journal, and the local newspaper bought a bunch of Spencer’s inner tube strips. The rubber band was born. Spencer started selling his rubber bands to office supply, paper goods, and twine stores across the region, building his business up. • He opened the world’s first rubber band factory in Alliance, Ohio, and then opened a second one in Hot Springs, Arkansas in 1944. In 1957, he patented the Alliance rubber band, which ultimately set the world rubber band standard. • Today, Alliance Rubber is the number one rubber band manufacturer in the world, churning out more than 14 million pounds of rubber bands per year. Their annual output would stretch to the Moon and back ten times. • The biggest consumer of rubber bands is the U.S. Postal Service which uses them to sort and group mail. Second place goes to the newspaper industry, followed by the floral industry and the food industry, which uses them to bunch things like asparagus and broccoli. (continued next page)

Today, 90 per cent of paper pulp is made of wood. Paper manufacture is estimated to account for nearly 13 per cent of total wood use, and represents one per cent of the world’s total economic output. When paper rots or is composted it emits methane gas which is 25 times more toxic than CO2.

• Most rubber bands are made from natural latex which is more elastic than synthetic rubber. • Rubber bands are manufactured by extruding the prepared latex in the shape of a tube. A large tube yields large rubber bands, and a small tube yields small rubber bands. The tubes are then sliced into rings. • To extend their life, rubber bands should be packed in an air-tight bag or container, and stored in a cool, dark place. • The use of rubber bands by Britain’s Royal Mail postal service caused significant media attention in the country due to the large quantity of them found discarded on the ground every day. They changed the color of the rubber bands from brown to red, to make them more visible, and therefore more likely to be picked up by postal workers. • The world’s largest rubber band ball as of November 19, 2008 was created by Joel Waul

of Lauderhill, Florida. He is the current World 2/28/18 10:24 AM Record holder according to the Guinness World Records. The ball, which previously sat under a tarp in his driveway, weighs 9,032 pounds (4,097 kg), is more than 6 ft 7 in (2.01 m) tall, is about a 20 feet in circumference, and consists of more than 700,000 rubber bands. It took him six years to construct. The rubber bands were contributed by Stretchwell.com, a physical therapy company. The ball is now owned by Ripley’s Believe it or Not. • Before Joel Waul, Steve Milton of Eugene, Oregon previously held the record for the biggest rubber band ball. His ball weighed 4,603.6 lb (2,088.14 kg) and was sponsored by OfficeMax. Before Steve Milton, the record was held by John Bain of Wilmington, Delaware whose ball weighed around 3,120 pounds (1,420 kg), and consisted of over 850,000 rubber bands which were donated by Alliance Rubber and Stretchwell Inc.
