elcome to Cruise Passenger’s 2016/17 guide to cruising. More ships, more destinations, more activities – there’s never been so much choice in the world of cruising. And with the fastest-growing cruise industry in the world, Australia is in prime position to reap the benefits. But it’s important to choose the right cruise for you. Are you the kind of person who likes to kick back on a deck chair with a cocktail in hand? Or are you at your happiest when wading ashore from a Zodiac and trekking through the remote wilderness? Do you like to dance all night or cycle all day? Spend time with the family or indulge in a private escape? We recommend you start with the basics: budget. No matter what type of cruise you choose, you can always expect good value. No other holiday bundles together accommodation, transport, meals, entertainment and activities for the one price. For an amazing holiday at a bargain price, check out our selection of mid-range cruises offering fun-filled resort ships that are perfect for families. Or if things like great food, high-quality service and stylish facilities are important to you, splurge on a premium cruise. They’re a little more expensive, but a lot more luxurious. Then you’ll need to think about who you’re cruising with. When travelling with a family, choose a ship with interconnecting cabins, great kids’ clubs and ice-cream on tap 24 hours a day. If it’s just the two of you, look for plush spas, cool cocktail lounges, innovative restaurants and lazy sun decks. And where do you want to go? It’s no exaggeration to say that cruises travel to every corner of the globe, so you can head for fun in the sun in the South Pacific, penguin tracking in Antarctica or an eating safari through the alleyways of Southeast Asia. If you dream it, you can cruise it. Find everything you need to know in the pages of this guide, written just for you by leading cruise experts. Bon voyage! Lucy Jones Cruise Guide Editor

10 CRUISE TRENDS FOR 2016 AND BEYOND
New ships, new destinations and new onboard features – cruisers have a lot to look forward to. Teresa Ooi reports.
1 BIG, BIGGER, BIGGEST
It looks like the mantra: the bigger the better will be the recurring theme as more international cruise lines compete to launch the world’s biggest cruise ships. Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas wins the race at 227,000 tonnes, with 5,500 passengers. Everything on board is over-sized, too, from the largest water park at sea to a death-defying 10-storey slide called The Ultimate Abyss. We’re getting our own cruise behemoth in Australia; the 5,000 passenger Ovation of the Seas will arrive in Sydney in December. Norwegian Cruise Line launched its biggest-ever ship last year, the 4,248-passenger, 164,600 tonne Norwegian Escape. But even these monsters could be dwarfed in 2019 when MSC and Costa launch their own megaships carrying up to 6,600 passengers.
heading up Asian dining on six of P&O Cruises’ British-based ships. Oceania’s French chef Jacques Pepin offers market tours and special gastronomic feasts to local specialist restaurants in Europe. And if you prefer Thai street food the way the locals enjoy it, then there’s renowned Australian chef David Thompson on board Aqua Mekong in Southeast Asia.
4 CUBA ON THE MAP
2 FAMOUS FACES IN THE KITCHEN Cruise ships are also going big with celebrity chefs as they sign up marquee names to create menus and front specialty restaurants. The latest signings include Melbourne-born chef and author Curtis Stone for Princess Cruises and renowned Hawaiian chef Roy Yamaguchi for MSC Cruises. There’s also Mark Best for Holland America Line and Indian-born British chef Atul Kochhar 4

Royal Caribbean recently announced it would roll out high-speed Voom internet across its entire fleet, following its success on Quantum-class ships. MSC Cruises has also announced a new multi-device package, which at around $5 per day is the best value at sea. Carnival has just launched a similar package for its Australian-based ships, Carnival Spirit and Legend, offering unlimited access to social media sites for $15 per day.

3 STAY CONNECTED AT SEA
Once it was expensive and ever so-slow. Today’s modern fleet of ocean liners are being fitted out with the latest technology to keep you connected while you’re cruising.
There has never been a better time to visit Cuba, which is fast becoming the hot cruise destination. Since the US lifted its embargo on Cuba, more international cruise ships are lining up to visit Havana and other Cuban cities from Miami. Carnival’s ship Adonia, for the new Fathom line, was the first US ship to call at Havana and more are on their way.
5 LONGER STAYS IN PORT
Traditionally, cruise ships arrive in port early in the morning and are ready to set sail

again before sunset. Now lines are shuffling their schedules to spend longer in port or adding overnight stays in the most exciting destinations. Azamara, Crystal Cruises, Viking Ocean Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Seabourn, Silversea and Oceania Cruises all offer overnight stays. Passengers can spend two days exploring the Hermitage in St Petersburg, check out the nightlife in St Tropez, ring in the New Year in Sydney or take in a Broadway show on an evening in New York. Lines are also pushing back their departure times to late at night, allowing passengers to have dinner and explore the city on their own or take a guided excursion to the theatre, a supper club or an outdoor concert.
6 HOT NEW DESTINATIONS
R.M. NUNES / SHUTTERSTOCK.COM
Myanmar continues to grow in popularity as new ships launch on the Irrawaddy from APT, Avalon, Pandaw and Scenic. Costa Rica is an eco-and-adventure-packed destination which has attracted boutique operator Windstar to base two of its ships there. This
summer Norway will continue to grow in popularity, thanks in part to the movie Frozen which glamourised the country’s fjords and stunning landscapes. Since Norway is usually an expensive country to tour on land, cruises offer a great-value alternative.
7 ADVENTURE GOES HIGH END
Luxury expedition cruising is fast emerging as the hottest market in the industry. In the last few months three lines have announced major new ships to begin construction this year and launch from 2018. Australian line Scenic was the first to announce a new ship, the 114-suite Scenic Eclipse. The ship will have a safety ranking of Ice Class – 1A Super category – a new benchmark for passenger ships. It will operate more than 20 cruise itineraries around the globe, carrying two twin-engine helicopters, custom-built Zodiacs, a 240-seat theatre, heated pools and a submarine. Crystal Cruises’ Crystal Endeavor is next up, offering huge, ultra-luxe suites as well as plenty of toys, including two helicopters, two seven-person submarines, eight Zodiacs, jet skis and wave runners. French line Ponant has announced it will be building four new expedition ships with the first to launch in 2018. The small ships will carry less than 200 people, and will be ice-class and equipped with the latest technologies, including environmental protection technology.
8 CRUISE LINES FLYING HIGH Myanmar
Cruise lines are taking to the air. Crystal Cruises recently launched a Bombardier Global Express XRS jet to accommodate 12 passengers who prefer to fly privately and customise their Crystal vacations. The line
plans to add a larger Boeing 777 to its fleet in the future. Crystal’s butlers will be trained as flight attendants and food will be prepared by celebrity chefs. This northern hemisphere summer, Celebrity Cruises will launch Jet Set Sail, an exclusive private charter from the UK to the Mediterranean on selected itineraries.
9 RISE OF THE DRAGON
They came. They saw. And now they are conquering. Between 2012 and 2014, the number of Chinese cruisers grew by a staggering 79 per cent each year. In 2016, there will be more than one million cruise passengers from China – and by 2030, there will be seven million. International lines are scrambling to refit existing ships and send them to China, and building new billiondollar ships specifically for China’s new breed of cruise passenger. Princess Cruises, Costa Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean are all launching Chinese-specific ships in the coming years.
10 MORE SHIPS FOR AUSTRALIA
Not to be outdone, Australian cruisers can expect more ships in their waters than ever before. Local favourite P&O Cruises is adding a sixth ship to its fleet, Pacific Explorer, in 2017. The line has also announced it is building the first new ship specifically designed for the Australian market, a 135,500-tonne, 4,200-passenger vessel to be launched in 2019. Royal Caribbean will have five ships based here, including the huge Ovation of the Seas. Princess Cruises will be sailing four ships in the region next season and adding Adelaide to its busy homeporting roster. CRUISE GUIDE 2016-2017

Regent Seven Seas Explorer
The US$450 million Seven Seas Explorer is almost ready to embark on her maiden voyage from Monte Carlo to Venice. Billed as the most luxurious ship on the sea, the all-suite, all-balcony vessel will carry 750 passengers. Two of them will be staying in the ultra luxurious Regent Suite, priced at about $10,000 a night. Measuring 360 square metres, the Regent Suite is bigger than the average home and features a private, in-suite spa with unlimited treatments, two bedrooms, a spacious living room, two balconies, a private garden, a personal butler and Hermes toiletries.
MORE SHIPS AHOY
Designed by renowned hospitality designer Adam D Tihany, Seabourn Encore will feature the amenities, modern design elements and fashionable interiors of Seabourn’s elegant Odyssey-class ships. Encore will carry just over 600 guests and, in keeping with the line’s high standards of personalised service, there will be one staff member for each guest on board. Accommodation is all suites with private balconies and the grand Wintergarden suites will be more like private apartments. After her christening in Singapore, Seabourn Encore will spend a maiden season sailing around Australia and New Zealand before heading to homeport in the Mediterranean.
6
Viking Sky
The third of Viking’s new class of ocean ships, Viking Sky will be largely identical to her sisters. That means an infinity pool cantilevered over the back of the ship, a second pool with a retractable roof, an opulent central atrium, a glass-roofed Wintergarden and al fresco dining on the Aquavit Terrace. The ship will also have solid environmental credentials, using solar power and a fuel system designed to minimise emissions.

All guests will stay in luxurious verandah suites ranging from 36 square metres all the way up to the 142 square metre, two-bedroom Royal Suite. Flying Clipper
Flying Clipper will be the world’s largest square rigger and the largest ship of its kind afloat. There will be three swimming pools on board (one of which will funnel light through the atrium into the dining room), a water-sports platform and the popular bowsprit net for relaxing at the front of the ship. It will take 300 passengers in 150 cabins, including 34 suites with balconies. Like the other ships in the Star Clippers fleet, the five-masted barque will primarily be powered by wind (with hightech engines for backup).
The first river ship from luxury ocean line Crystal Cruises will set sail from Vienna in the coming weeks. The line has purchased and refurbished Dertour’s MS Mozart, the largest ship on the European waterways at twice the width of standard vessels. Up to 158 passengers will travel in spacious suites starting from 20 square metres. Public areas include the Palm Court hub, similar to that on Crystal’s ocean ships, four dining areas and a vintage wine room.
E
Louisiane
The first ship for the new French American Line, Louisiane will be a luxury 75-cabin vessel with a distinctly French atmosphere. She will be homeported in New Orleans and sail along five of America’s great rivers: Mississippi, Ohio, Cumberland, Tennessee and Red. Her small size means she can access ports other ships cannot and there will be a focus on the French-American history of the region.
Scenic Aura
The 44-passenger Scenic Aura will sail on the Irrawaddy in Myanmar, cruising between Mandalay and Pyay, including a visit to the famed temples of Bagan. On board there will be a swimming pool, sun deck, open-air cinema, gym, wellness centre, library and two restaurants.

LAUNCHING AUGUST 2016
Expect to see a lot more enormous ships on the water over the next few years. MSC Cruises will launch two 6,300 passenger ships from 2019. Carnival has ordered four ships holding more than 6,000 passengers each to be deployed across its brands from 2019 to 2022.
CroisiEurope
French line CroisiEurope is launching its very first river ship in Africa next year. The as-yetunnamed vessel will carry 16 passengers in eight balcony suites and sail on five-night itineraries along the Zambezi and Chobe rivers in southern Africa. Guests will combine the cruise with a stay at safari lodges and a visit to Victoria Falls.

WHERE WE LOVE TO CRUISE
Whether you fancy exploring the exotic ports and rivers of Southeast Asia, soaking in an onsen in Japan or cruising around the Australian coast, the opportunities are almost endless. Teresa Ooi reports.
Moreton Bay
T
his has been an extraordinary year for Asia, one of the most important destinations for the world’s international fleet of cruise ships. As cruise lines send their biggest and best ships to the East, in particular China, they are also sending an important message; there is a rising interest from the world’s cruising aficionados who are keen to taste something more exotic and mysterious than they have experienced before. And not only that, the dragon has woken and China’s burgeoning middle class has also been smitten and wants to holiday at sea. Home to many ancient wonders, remote villages, traditional cultures, warring history, spicy and rich food, bustling metropolises and Western influences, Asia is a region of sharp contrasts. Since the government lifted its selfimposed isolation from the Western world, Myanmar is now a hot spot for cruise passengers. Curious to find out more of what life is like along the banks of the Irrawaddy and Chindwin rivers, new players have entered the river-cruise market with Scenic, APT and Avalon launching new ships and itineraries. Australian, American and British passengers have flocked to Myanmar to cruise from the old capital of Mandalay to Bagan, the city of 8
a thousand stupas. Even Pandaw, one of the older operators in the region, is pushing the boundaries and offering cruises further up the Irrawaddy into China. Vietnam with its electrifying capital Ho Chi Minh City is one of Asia’s most amazing places to visit. It is also home to many river cruises that traverse two countries, with cruises often ending in Cambodia’s Siem Reap, renowned for the ancient ruins of Angkor Wat. Vietnam is also
popular with ocean liners including plush lines Crystal, Ponant, Silversea and Seabourn. Vietnam never fails to surprise with its delicious beef or chicken broth noodles, pho, its eclectic markets and fast tailors keen to turn out another “Chanel” jacket in 24 hours. The seaside town of Hoi An is the place to visit for fashionistas wanting cheap tailored outfits. Japan, the Land of the Rising Sun, is saturated with culture and tradition. It is a

region of exceptional beauty especially during the cherry blossom season. The food is seasonal and you can eat well and reasonably cheaply if you follow where the locals dine. The country is dotted with invigorating, natural hot springs called onsen if you fancy indulging in some of the best hot baths infused with natural minerals, which are spotlessly clean. An overnight stay at a ryokan (inn) is highly recommended to complete the experience. Lines that cruise regularly to Japan include Princess Cruises, Ponant, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises and Holland America Line. Singapore and Hong Kong are two very popular destinations for a quick injection of eating local fare and shopping. Many of the world’s leading lines start their cruises from the super-efficient cruise terminals in both cities. From Singapore, you will be spoilt for choice if you are looking for short breaks up the coast of Malaysia to Thailand. From Hong Kong, you can cruise up the coast of China to Shanghai.

Australia and Tasmania, the Apple Isle. The experiences are hugely varied from handfeeding wild dolphins, cage diving with Great White Sharks and snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef to riding a camel along the beach at Broome, Western Australia. If you want to see some of the country’s most stunning waterfalls, gorges and wildlife in the Kimberley, then head north during the dry autumn/ winter season when birds are plentiful. You can easily spot the white-bellied sea eagle, the brahminy kite or the peregrine falcon. P&O offers a wide range of cruises around the Australian coast with six ships, Pacific Aria, Dawn, Pearl, Jewel, Eden and Explorer (from 2017), sailing itineraries from Fremantle, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Cairns. Short southern getaways include a five-night roundtrip from Melbourne to Kangaroo Island and Port Lincoln, and roundtrips from Sydney calling at Eden, Moreton Island or Fraser Island. From Brisbane a seven-night roundtrip takes in Hamilton Island, Cairns and Willis Island. In WA, discover the Coral Coast with Pacific Eden offering eight- and nine-night roundtrips from Fremantle calling at Broome, Exmouth, Geraldton and Margaret River. If you prefer an adventure cruise around the pristine island of Tasmania, Coral Expeditions has recently launched a seven-night expedition cruise from Hobart to Bruny island and the Wilderness Heritage area around Port Davey and Bathurst Harbour. Tasmania is renowned for its exceptional food and there’s nothing like tasting Tassie’s freshly shucked oysters from a local farm. Carnival Cruises sails to Tasmania from Sydney, as well as heading north with a popular four-night cruise to Moreton Island where you can dive into freshwater lakes infused with tea-tree oils or bump into dolphins, whales and turtles at a marine sanctuary. RIVER 5 REASONS TO
CHOOSE A RIVER CRUISE
Smaller ships, a slower pace and berths right in the centre of town. There’s a lot to love about river cruising.
01
IT’S BOOMING
There’s never been a better time to take a river cruise. Over the past five years, new ships have been launching almost every day, taking to the waters of Europe, Asia and South America. Viking River Cruises alone has launched 52 new ships in that time. And there’s no sign of slowing down – the Cruise Line Industry Association predicts that at least 40 new river ships will launch by 2022. That means more choice, more itineraries and better prices.
02
IT IMMERSES YOU IN A DESTINATION
Some landscapes are meant to be seen from a river. It puts you up close and personal with the surrounds, as opposed to the distance that’s inherent in ocean cruising. The vineyard-clad and castle-topped hills of the Rhine Gorges make it the most cruised strip of river for good reason: nothing beats the 360-degree panoramic views from a ship’s deck. The soaring cliffs of the Iron Gates on the Lower Danube (shared by Serbia and Romania) and the fabled Three Gorges on China’s Yangtze River are hard to see any other way. Plus most river
ship cabins have huge panoramic windows, so you won’t miss a thing as you travel.
03
IT TAKES YOU RIGHT INTO THE ACTION
Imagine docking right in front of the Budapest parliament building or just a few hundred metres from the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Or stepping off your ship and (almost) into the foyer of The Strand hotel in Yangon. River ships make their way right into the heart of cities, instead of having to dock at large ocean ports. That means more time on shore and less time spent in transit. You can also wander off to explore on your own whenever it takes your fancy.
04
in a German castle. Some ships carry bicycles and GPS guides that allow you to explore further by yourself. There has also been a rise in special-interest cruises that cover topics such as beer, wine, spring blossoms, Christmas markets, golf, music and more.
05
YOU CAN GO OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
River cruising is no longer restricted to the tame waterways of central Europe. You can cruise the Mackenzie River in the Canadian Yukon and Gambia River in West Africa. Sail on the Amazon in Peru, Ecuador and Brazil for close encounters with pink dolphins, monkeys and
macaws – and the chance to fish for piranha. A Chobe River cruise in Botswana and Namibia takes you through magnificent floodplains teeming with hippos, elephants and giraffes for a safari with a difference. A river cruise between Moscow and St Petersburg sails through the bigsky, forest-filled landscapes of northwest Russia with stops such as the remote Kizhi Island on vast Lake Onega, known for its World Heritage listed wooden churches.
“We just loved waking up each morning in a new city or town and being able to walk straight off the boat and be in the midst of all the local activities and events, such as markets, museums, choral performances and concerts.” Pamela
YOU CAN DO MORE THAN EVER BEFORE
The standard old-town tour is a little bit yesterday. River cruise shore excursions are increasingly flexible, more youthfully orientated and more interesting. You might visit Xian’s terracotta warriors with a conversation expert, join a pastry-making class in Lyon, learn about brandymaking near Bordeaux or attend an exclusive cocktail reception CRUISE GUIDE 20162017

PREMIUM 5 REASONS TO
CHOOSE A PREMIUM SHIP Like most things in life, you get what you pay for. But sometimes you can have the best of both worlds.
01
03
PAY A LITTLE, GET A LOT
THE STAFF ARE TOP NOTCH
Premium cruise lines are more expensive than mid-range, but for a little extra money you’ll notice a big difference. From the moment you step aboard, you can feel the quality and attention to detail. There’s more space in cabins: bigger, ocean-view staterooms, often with a balcony, and towels are changed daily and bed linen every second day. There’s more space per passenger and a higher staff-to-guest ratio.
02
THERE’S PLENTY TO DO
Sure you can just swim in the pool and relax on the sun deck if that’s your idea of a holiday. If not, you can play paddle tennis, table tennis or miniature golf. Relax in the well-stocked library and play board games, cards or bridge. Take a dance class, group stretch session or aerobics class. Retreat to the well-appointed spa with experienced masseuses who use quality massage oils and beauty products. In the evening, watch a movie poolside, complete with free popcorn.
Most premium lines offer good service with a smile as a crucial part of their ambience. Crew make a point of remembering your name and the type of coffee or eggs you like for breakfast. Others will try to seat you at your favourite table wherever possible at meal times. At the ship’s many bars, staff will serve your usual tipple with a smile and look after you when you go on shore excursions. They are likely to be on deck with a cold drink and cold towel to welcome you back if it’s a hot day. Service is fast and friendly.
itinerary, so you’ll come away from your cruise knowing more about your favourite destinations.
05
so you get to experience more of what each destination has to offer. Smaller ships can also dock at places where big ships need to anchor out to sea, avoiding the time-consuming process of putting guests ashore by tender.
THEY TRAVEL TO INTERESTING PLACES
Because premium ships tend to be smaller, they can call at ports which aren’t able to accept the huge megaliners. This means you can cruise to off-the-beaten-track destinations where you’ll likely be the only ship in port, so you don’t have to jostle with crowds. They will also spend more days in port rather than cruising at sea,
Being port-heavy, the cruise was perfect as it offered lots of activities and bars while aboard, balanced with full days of exploring beautiful Italian towns at your own pace. The best part of each day was family dinner.” Lucy
04 THEY ARE ENRICHING
All cruise lines have a busy program of activities to keep guests entertained and premium cruise lines take their offering one step further with educational and informative enrichment programs. They allow guests to pursue a wide range of individual interests such as photography, languages, dancing and cooking. They are often tailored to the CRUISE GUIDE 20162017

MIDRANGE 5 REASONS TO
CHOOSE A MIDRANGE SHIP
Get ready for a really big holiday. Megaliners are like a floating fun resort, perfect for families and with an endless array of things to do. Here’s why a mid-range ship is right for you.
01 THEY ARE GREAT VALUE
Try comparing a seven-day cruise for four with seven days on the Gold Coast and you’ll see what great value a cruise holiday really is. And don’t forget, you have to pay for the rides at the Gold Coast! Once you step on board a megaliner, just about everything you want to do is included in your fare – meals, activities and entertainment. Plus with so many ships on offer and so many cabins to fill, cruise lines offer great deals to lure passengers. Look for two-for-one offers, free upgrades, extra onboard credit and last-minute deals, and you could be cruising for as little as $50 per person a night.
02
THERE’S ENDLESS CHOICE
As Australia becomes the hottest cruise market in the world, all the major lines are sending their big ships down under. That means Australian cruisers have their pick of some of the world’s most technologically advanced ships, such as the new Ovation of the Seas, which is
arriving in December. During the southern wave season a dozen international ships will be based in Australia and many more will be stopping at our ports on their way round the world.
03 THEY ARE A LOT OF FUN
04
05
THEY ARE PERFECT FOR FAMILIES
YOU CAN GO ANYWHERE
It can be tough to plan a holiday that will appeal to everyone, from toddlers to teens and all the way up to grandparents. That’s where cruising on a big ship really comes into its own. While the little ones are playing in the kids’ club, the grown-ups can retreat to an exclusive adults’ only area for a cocktail and some R&R. Teenagers can meet people their own age at cool lounges or dance parties. And you know everyone will be safe.
Cruise lines are limited only by their imagination and they are adding a mind-boggling array of bells and whistles to their new ships. Simulators will let you experience skydiving and surfing right on the deck, while The best part about the glass viewing cruise was that we didn’t have pods and to hang around our parents all the cantilevered time, so it really felt like we were big walkways kids. My sister, friends and I played give you a ping-pong, golf, watched heaps of birds’-eye movies and played basketball, just to view of name a few things. We were never the ocean. bored because there was always Watch something new to do.” movies underwater, Mackenzie under the stars, in 3D or even in “5D” (with moving seats and squirting water jets). Have a martini mixed by a robot bartender or sip on frozen cocktails in a bar carved entirely from ice. There is also lots of choice when it comes to food.
These ships sail all around the world. Literally. From local cruises around Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific to fun in the sun holiday breaks in the Caribbean to explorations of Europe, Canada and Alaska, big resort ships have got you covered. Keep an eye on developments in Asia as more big ships start basing themselves in ports like Singapore and Shanghai, letting you explore more exotic destinations.

ADVENTURE/SMALL SHIPS 5 REASONS TO
TRY A SMALL SHIP CRUISE
The ships are a more intimate and the itineraries more exotic. Small ship and expedition voyages really can take you to the ends of the Earth, and just about anywhere in between.
01
SMALL PACKAGES, GOOD THINGS
That old saying is never more appropriate than when applied to small-ship and adventure cruising. Some cruisers like vast shopping malls and bright lights, while adventure cruisers prefer peace, quiet and tranquillity. Most small ships carry about 100 or so guests, often fewer, so you don’t have to worry much about crowds or queues. Small, sometimes tiny, ships can venture much closer to shore and even up rivers to explore in true expedition style. Vessels with shallow drafts and narrow beams mean adventure cruisers can immerse themselves in fascinating environments without the need for ugly and intrusive infrastructure such as wharves, jetties and port facilities.
02
NEW SHIPS ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD
Luxury adventure cruising is the hottest ticket around right now and the new ships that lines are announcing have to be seen to be believed. Ultra-luxurious, polar-class ships that can cruise
through the world’s toughest ocean so smoothly your butler won’t spill a drop of champagne are no longer the stuff of dreams. They’ll also be carrying a fleet of Zodiacs, at least one helicopter and possibly even a mini submarine.
03 ONEOFAKIND DESTINATIONS

GO WILD FOR WILDLIFE
CHALLENGE YOURSELF
Guests on the world’s expedition fleet delight in close, respectful encounters with wildlife in its natural environments. Whales, bears, seabirds and all kinds of wildlife are best observed in their proper home. AURORA EXPEDITIONS
A
t Aurora Expeditions, expedition cruising means choosing the right ship for the destination, staffing it with keen experts, then using every spare moment to explore! For over 20 years they have been taking small groups of adventurous souls to some of the world’s most wild and remote places. Their ice-strengthened expedition vessels offer unprecedented safety, whilst small-groups and flexible, innovative itineraries deliver intimate and personal experiences. The atmosphere on board all their ships is welcoming and informal. Everyone is an ‘expeditioner’, sharing a love of wilderness, indigenous cultures, incredible plants, animals and adventure. They are committed to minimising their impact on places visited, whether to the environment or the communities who invite them to experience their culture.
40
Because they often travel where few others go, daily schedules are subject to natural forces, be they tides, ice, wind and swell. They aim for two to three excursions each day, hopping into Zodiacs for landings or cruises. Most of the trips offer optional adventures, from sea kayaking to mountaineering, scuba diving to snorkelling. Flexibility is the key to a successful and fulfilling voyage. The experienced, enthusiastic expedition team, including naturalists, historians, and geologists, are second to none; passionate about what they do and committed to delivering an educationally rich and life-changing experience. It’s time to stir the soul, push the boundaries and experience the adventure of a lifetime!

The five-masted Royal Clipper is the largest fully rigged sailing ship in the world and features a spectacular three-deck atrium with spiralling open-sided stairways.
