How to choose your European journey

Cruise Passenger executive editor Teresa Ooi ’s round-up of the best of summer European cruising.

I

t could be sipping limoncello at a beachside cafe in Portofino or kayaking in the Norwegian fjords – there are so many experiences in this spectacular region that make every European holiday a standout. And while the old favourites still attract, new destinations are emerging. The Baltic Sea is fast becoming a soughtafter area to cruise. Holland America, Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, Azamara Cruises and MSC Cruises call at several ports in Norway and Denmark, as well as going to Estonia and Russia. 4

A voyage along the Norwegian coast showcases the country’s famed natural beauty. The coastline is dotted with idyllic cities such as Bergen and Tromso that charm with colourful timber houses and cobbled streets. Some cruises reach as far north as the Lofoten Islands which are rich in Viking history. In Russia, the ornate city of St Petersburg wows with its grand buildings gilded in gold leaf and the exquisite designs of the Cossacks. The centuriesold city remains the cultural centre of Russia. Head to the Mariinksy Theatre to see the ballet, or to the Winter Palace to view its collection of Egyptian antiquities, prehistoric art and Russian paintings. For a change of pace, the Mediterranean, which remains one of the most popular destinations for Australian cruisers, offers a warm-weather

WHAT TO PACK FOR THE MEDITERRANEAN Mix and match: Take separates that can be worn in multiple combinations to give you more outfits. Adding accessories will increase your sartorial variety. During the day, keep it casual and comfortable, but make sure you have elegant and dressier clothes for the evening. Opt for light, breathable clothing in the daytime, and change into more dressy resort wear at night. For shore excursions: Wear comfortable loafers or sneakers. Pack an umbrella, sunscreen and water in your daypack – the European summer can get uncomfortably warm.

WHAT TO PACK FOR THE BALTIC

getaway during Southern Hemisphere winters. Silversea, Celebrity Cruises and Regent Seven Seas all regularly sail the Med. The region is a foodie’s delight, offering musttry dishes in every port. In the narrow clifftop towns along the Amalfi Coast, cruisers sunbake on loungers or stop to sip espresso and eat cannoli. Other spectacular meals can be had in Scandinavia, where the burgeoning food scene showcases the best of local produce and creativity. For architecture and design buffs, Europe’s stunning buildings – from Gothic cathedrals to uber-modern skyscrapers – can be explored on cruises that visit Barcelona, Lisbon, Bilbao, SaintMalo or London. Whatever you want on your holiday, you’ll find it on a European cruise.

Even in summer, Norway’s average temperature during the day hovers between 15°C and 26°C and evening temperatures can cool down to 12°C, so always pack an anorak or puffer jacket to protect you from the cold and wind. It’s prudent to pack longsleeved thermal tops and shirts with thicker pants – the trick is to layer your clothes. Take several woollen scarves, to add variety and warmth, and comfortable hiking boots are a must. However, remember that eveningwear must be smarter – elegant dresses or pant suits will do, and remember a blazer or shawl for warmth. For shore excursions: Wear a puffer or waterproof jacket with comfortable shoes.

egin this journey of the Med wandering the vibrant streets of Barcelona and when night falls, find a cosy bar and call for a vino tinto or vermouth to go with the endless plates of tapas. At the gritty French port of Marseille, you can sample Provence’s most famous dish – bouillabaisse. This delicious

seafood stew was first made by fishermen using up the odds and ends from their catch, but is now served at Michelin-starred restaurants where purists argue over the finer points of its construction. INTO THE MIDNIGHT SUN 16 NIGHTS: NORWAY AND GERMANY | DEPARTS AUSTRALIA 1 AUGUST 2020

A journey from Hamburg to the remote glaciers and frozen tundra of Norway’s Arctic islands.

H

amburg, where the North Sea meets the Elbe River, is a popular cruise departure port in northern Germany – and there’s so much to do even before you board MSC Preziosa. The city is filled with avantgarde museums and has a great multicultural food scene, though you must also try the local specialties: eel soup and kummel schnapps. After dinner, put on your dancing shoes and head to the Hamburg fish market – it turns into a dance hall at night. Return in the morning for a German fish sandwich.

Your first stop in Norway is Molde, a cultural hub that hosts annual international literature and jazz festivals. Cruising further north, you’ll visit the small coal-mining town of Longyearbyen, which has a rich history and some unusual traditions. Don’t be surprised if you’re asked to take off your shoes when entering a restaurant – it’s a tradition leftover from the coal mining days. It’s just one of the fascinating insights into new cultures you’ll get on this journey. Prices start at $5,690 per person for an Interior Stateroom.
