ou could say we’re a little excited about this year. We’ve been busy. Making groundbreaking bicycles takes work: incorporating the latest technology, diving into how people ride bikes, considering rider fit and handling, assessing maintenance and the many other subtleties of bike evolution that affect design. We drew this road map to 2014 four years ago. Our goal was to leverage our entire 27-year history and create bicycles that are leaders in their category. Basically, that means finding the perfect balance between performance, modern application and ease of use. We’ve arrived at that moment, and we proudly introduce our most complete, technologically advanced, most-harmonized collection of bicycles ever. We have a feeling that 2014 will go down as one of the most definitive in our history. It starts with our new Process platform of Trail/Enduro mountain bikes, an incredibly comprehensive series of bicycles that redefines the genre. It continues with the next step in our successful Operator downhill series, featuring a new carbon frame that’s lighter, stiffer and so much faster. But we didn’t stop there. Our new Super Jake cyclocross machine takes the winning tradition of our carbon Major Jake and breathes next-level performance into the frame by making it disc compatible, with a new rear triangle that eats up rough terrain and spits out speed. Throughout the rest of our fleet, you’ll see new models, and improvements on existing ones. Our Road platform, headlined by our Endurance/Performance Zone Series, is part of our largest collection of Road bikes ever, including unique bikes, like the Ti Rove gravel grinder and a newly framed Sutra touring bike. It keeps going: a redesigned Stinky 24 Kid’s gravity ripper, more affordable carbon models in our Race Light XC range, even long-time staples, like the Blast and Cinder Cone, see new 27.5-inch wheel-frame designs. At Kona, we love riding great bikes. Perhaps even more, though, we love building great bikes. Enjoy 2014.

2014 Technology materials Since we produced our first mountain bike 27 years ago, Kona has partnered with the finest frame-building and material manufacturers in the world. It’s why our name is synonymous with longevity, durability, performance and value. We decide which material will yield the best ride attributes for a given application, from the simple elegance of steel to high-tech Toray Carbon, Scandium, Aluminum, even a dash of Titanium. At Kona, we pride ourselves on marrying material with intended use, going to great lengths to ensure your bike is built with The Kona Ride in mind.

KONA CROMOLY For 2014, you'll find the simplicity, strength, comfort, resilience and playfulness of Kona Cromoly interspersed throughout our road- and mountain-bike platforms. Very few materials offer as much shock absorption, durability and supple-ride characteristics as steel. We’ve never strayed from cycling’s original material and have worked tirelessly to adapt, refine and innovate Cromoly framesets as rider demands continue to evolve. KONA CROMOLY BIKES: Downside, Honzo, Rove, Sutra

REYNOLDS 520 BUTTED CROMOLY From one of the world’s top cromoly manufacturers, Reynolds Cycling Technology, comes Reynolds 520 tubes, which are mandrel butted for accurate profiles and available in a wide range of shapes. Weight savings from butting provides competitively priced, light framesets. The Reynolds 520 range uses the same chemistry as their 725 range but without the heat-treatment process. REYNOLDS 520 BIKES: Paddy Wagon, Unit, Honky Tonk, Explosif

KONA 7005/6061 ALUMINUM BUTTED Kona 7005 and 6061 Aluminum alloys are used extensively throughout our fleet of mountain and asphalt bicycles. A tough, durable, affordable, light alloy, both Kona 7005 and 6061 deliver fantastic, reliable performance that lasts for thousands of rides. Much of our 7005/6061 tubing is butted and/or formed, meaning the tubing’s wall thickness can be increased or decreased, as well as shaped, allowing us to fine-tune a particular frame’s strength and ride characteristics depending on its intended application. materials 2014 Technology KONA RACE LIGHT 7005/6061 ALUMINUM BUTTED Kona Race Light 7005/6061 is a lighter, more performance-oriented fabrication of our 7005 and 6061 Aluminum tubing. Designed to meet Kona’s discerning race specifications, Race Light 7005/6061 uses custom butting to create thicker tubes at weld areas and important parts of the frame, providing incredible strength and torsional integrity to the feel of the ride. We remove wall thickness in other parts of the frameset to lighten up the bike, giving the perfect balance between quickness and stiffness. The emphasis here is on performance, lightness and speed, built the Kona way. KONA RACE LIGHT 7005/6061 BIKES: Jake, Jake the Snake, Zing, Hei Hei, Blast, Kahuna DL, Kahuna, Mohala, Satori

KONA RACE LIGHT 6069 ALUMINUM BUTTED At Kona, we are always refining materials to achieve the best mix of ride performance for certain applications. With Kona Race Light 6069 tubing, we are actually able to make framesets that are lighter and stiffer than Scandium 7005. Not quite as light and stiff as Scandium 6069, but significantly more affordable, Kona Race Light 6069 Aluminum allows our designers to make the tubing thinner while maintaining the preferred ride characteristics, stiffness and strength for a desired riding application. KONA RACE LIGHT 6069 BIKES: Zone

KONA SCANDIUM 6069 BUTTED Known to be one of the strongest alloys in the world, Kona Scandium 6069 is featured in a few of our high- to middleend bike models, mainly in our dual-suspension and Race Light XC mountain bikes. Introduced to our line in 2012, Kona Scandium 6069 comes with yield strengths that are about 40 percent higher than previous Scandium alloys. The result is the strongest per-weight aluminum alloy ever made. Because of its fibrous or fine-grained structure, Scandium 6069 alloy reveals a unique combination of corrosion resistance and excellent fatigue strength. KONA SCANDIUM 6069 BIKES: Hei Hei Hei, Cinder Cone, Big Unit

3-2.5 TITANIUM 3-2.5 Titanium is an alloy consisting of 3 percent aluminum, 2.5 percent vanadium, and 94.5 percent pure titanium. Excellent fatigue life, lightweight, property consistency, form-ability, and corrosion resistance are but a few of the reasons 3-2.5 is still the premier frame material when it comes to high-quality, seamless tube titanium. Kona’s 3-2.5 Ti bikes are manufactured in the U.S.A. by Lynskey Performance Designs, one of the top titanium fabricators in the world. 2014 3-2.5 TI BIKES: Ti Rove, Raijin, Ti Explosif

2014 Technology materials KONA CARBON To create our growing fleet of Kona Carbon bikes, Kona has partnered with some of the most reputable carbon manufacturers in the world. Our design team works intimately with our production facilities to ensure the desired ride characteristics, durability demands and weight stipulations are met to the highest standards possible. Kona Carbon Race bikes are featherlight, super-fast and very durable. STEP 1: APPLICATION

At Kona, we are very selective when choosing carbon fiber for a given application. Every bike requires a different balance of weight, strength, frame damping, stiffness, compliancy and durability. With over 25 years experience making bikes for every known cycling discipline, the first step in the design phase is ensuring how carbon fiber can be optimized for its intended use. STEP 2: DESIGNING AND ENGINEERING THE KONA RIDE

For the Kona Product Development Team, it’s imperative that key elements of the Kona Ride come to life in our carbon bikes. Like with all of our bikes, efficiency, agility, comfort, and overall strength are key considerations when we begin to work a carbon frame design. We work to leverage all the inherent properties of the material, which are markedly different than steel or aluminum, and it’s crucial that it still feels, rides and lasts like a Kona. STEP 3: MATERIALS & FABRICATION

THE WEAVE: Kona Carbon bikes use TORAY fibers, what we have determined to be the most technologically advanced in the industry; this is the same carbon weave used throughout most Formula 1 racing cars. Our entire structure is always built with unidirectional prepreg carbon fiber underneath a UD frame finish. The result? Frames with industry-leading weight, stiffness and durability. THE FRAME: Kona Carbon frames are built with a monocoque main triangle that allows continuous fibers at the tube junctures, resulting in a stronger and lighter overall structure. Our production process also eliminates as much bonded-in aluminum inserts as possible. When we do put alloy into the frame, we take very specific steps on their surface treatment and have special jigs for each step to ensure proper alignment. Kona Carbon frames are only molded with internal air bags, which are removed after the molding process. This means our carbon frames are made from only the best ingredients: carbon fiber and epoxy. STEP 4: TESTING

During the prototyping process, our frames are tested for weeks at a time on veritable bike torture machines that push our designs through tens of thousands of cycles. What we learn from this directly translates into making strong frames, while eliminating unnecessary material. Kona Team athletes—experts when it comes to pushing the limits of our bicycles in realworld scenarios—are the next in line when it comes to testing our prototype Kona Carbon Race bikes. Even after the rigors of factory test rigs and pro-rider testing, our product team continues to abuse the same prototypes day-in and day-out to ensure we are building the best Kona Carbon Race frames we possibly can. THE KONA RIDE

At Kona, we spend long hours focused on the little details that make up the perfect ride: the durability and versatility of Kona’s Independent Suspension technology, our growing fleet of Kona Carbon bikes, our philosophy when it comes to rider fit or how we choose which frame material goes with specific applications. Comfort, stability, standover, cornering performance and every nuance in between, the Kona Ride has long been a definitive element of what makes our company unique. And while we make bicycles for almost every type of rider and ride surface imaginable, at the end of the day, we design bikes that are playful and fun. Because as long-time cyclists, we know that a bike is all about you, the engine inside. COMPACT REAR TRIANGLE Short chainstays and seatstays provide a perfect balance of stability and power transfer when out of the saddle and pedaling hard. Shorter seatstays also have less deflection during braking and accelerate faster than longer stays. A more compact rear triangle also helps the bike to negotiate tight-twisting sections of trail. The Honzo, Operator and Process 111 are good examples of 2014 bikes with incredibly compact rear triangles: quick, aggressive in corners, fun to jump and laterally stiff.

HYDROFORMED TUBING Hydroforming is a tube-shaping technology that uses high-pressure liquid to form the shape of a tube and align its grain structure. Quite simply, the technology delivers a sound structure and ride performance like no other tube-shaping process in the world. The process results in a seamless, continuous, aligned piece of metal, right down to the fiber structure itself. Hydroformed tubing is especially advantageous at weld points where tubes can be flared to increase weld areas, adding strength without adding weight in the form of extra gussets. The result is a strong, flawless frame with great lateral stability, durability and responsiveness. Not to mention, it looks real sharp too.

SUPERPLASTIC FORMED TUBING Superplastic Forming (SPF) uses high temperatures to shape aluminum tubing when the tube structure is in its most “plastic” and formable state. SPF creates better tube shapes that cannot be produced using traditional forming techniques; 90 percent of the tube can be shaped, resulting in more optimized shapes and less weight. SPF tubes are the perfect alternative to more expensive carbon fiber, and they are comparable in weight and performance, without the accompanying disadvantages.

INTERNAL HEADSET By having the headset bearing located inside the headtube (called “zero stack”), rather than the top and bottom, we are able to achieve a number of advantages when it comes to front-end stiffness, durability and overall riding performance. The major benefit of an internal headset is the extra layer of protection it provides the bearings against the elements. Additionally, the bearings are commonly available angular contact bearings, which are easily and inexpensively replaced. An internal headset also reduces stack height, so the height of the stem and bars are more adjustable, giving the rider the best fit possible.

TAPERED HEADTUBE Aside from improving the aesthetic, due to its cleaner lines and smooth transition between the fork crown and the headset cover, tapered headtubes also offer a more solid interface between forks with tapered steertubes and the bicycle frame itself. More girth at the bottom of the headtube better distributes shock force, prolonging the bearing life of the headset itself. The inherent strength of its triangular design also means a stronger steering position and improved balance, giving the rider more control in rough terrain. A zero-stack, tapered headtube also puts strength where the load is going—into the lower headset cup—maximizing bearing durability where it’s needed.

NEW TRAIL/ENDURO KONA SIZING AND FIT Fit is the prime contributor to comfort and confidence on any type of bike design. It is especially critical on Trail/Enduro bikes where the uphill speed and efficiency an XC bike needs to be is at balance with the control of a downhill bike. Trail/Enduro bikes currently on the market are still subject to the traditional fit and sizing mountain bikes took from road-bike sizing standards, whereby seat tube length defined the sizing, and stem lengths increased with frame size. As a result, riders have been forced to replace stock stems because they are too long for use in technical terrain. While this Band-Aid solution has improved the ride, we would argue that the balance of the bike has been negatively affected. Radically shortening a stem, without regard for the geometry of the bike, will create a bike that is too small, and it shifts the weight bias rearward and creates a steep head angle, resulting in a twitchy ride. No good. In 2012, Kona took the modest step of offering a Trail hardtail with a longer reach, shorter stem and slack head angle. To balance the wheelbase growth from the longer reach we aggressively shortened the chainstays. In 2013, we built on this by offering the first Process model, featuring the same formula: long toptube, short stem and short chainstays. In 2014, we are turning it to 11 by offering three different Process models, each with the trailworthy balance of long reach, short stem, slack head angle and short chainstays. On our XC Race bikes, we feature longer toptubes coupled with shorter stems and slightly shorter headset stack heights. The steps between sizes are at half-inch to one-inch increments, with up to seven sizes ranging from 14 to 22 inches on many models. In our Commuter and Road platforms, size gaps are even at 15 to 20mm steps. There are still up to six sizes, from 46cm to 61cm on most models. When it's called for, seat posts are either offset or straight to maximize the reach and power output of the rider. More importantly, our comprehensive bike sizing allows Kona dealers to determine rider fit more easily from model to model and category to category.

All Process bikes come with 40mm stems.

TUBELESS COMPATIBLE RIMS An increasing amount of 2014 Kona models feature the benefits of tubeless compatible rims. Tubeless rims allow for tires with more puncture resistance, better tire grip on the trail, lower rolling resistance and weight savings over traditional tube + tire systems. For 2014, you’ll find tubeless compatible rims on most of our XC Race Light and Enduro bikes, as well as throughout our Cyclocross and Road platforms.

12x142 / 12x157 REAR AXLES The XC/Trail/Enduro 12x142mm and the DH 12x157 rear axle standards provide two major advantages to the Kona rider: the 12mm diameter of the rear axle provides the rear hub and frame with a stiff interface, while the 142mm/157mm outer diameter of the hub allows the wheel to be quickly and properly positioned in the frame before the rear axle is inserted. The take-away? 12x142 and 12x157 standards make a bike that rides better and is easier to work on.

CLEAN CABLE ROUTING Throughout Kona’s 2014 range, you’ll find many subtle changes to cable routing. Some are now internal, while others have been rerouted to improve performance and tidy aesthetics. These are small changes you may not even notice, but rest assured the changes are designed with ease-of-maintenance in mind and are not fashion driven. Okay, maybe we do like the clean lines of internal cable routing.

DROPPER POSTS Dropper posts are a key element in riding technical singletrack. No surprise then, for 2014 we’ve spec’d dropper posts on numerous models throughout our Enduro and MTB Trail platforms, featuring the lightweight and proven seat posts from Kind Shock. Bikes like the Honzo, Taro and new Wo fat bike do not come equipped with dropper posts but have cable routing to allow for after-market upgrades.

27.5-INCH WHEELS Introduced on the Kona Explosif in a mid-season launch last year, for 2014 you’ll find 27.5-inch wheels on the Process 134 and 153, the Precept DL and Precept, the Explosif, Cinder Cone and Blast. The benefits of the 27.5-inch wheel are simple: they roll over obstacles and track better than 26-inch wheels, but are more maneuverable and nimble than 29-inch ones. They are, quite literally, the best of both worlds. Specifically for Trail and Enduro applications, 27.5-inch wheels noticeably increase overall performance and ride confidence.

GEOMETRY DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY FEATURES / THE KONA RIDE

KONA INDEPENDENT SUSPENSION Since we started making dual-suspension bikes in 1995, Kona has used variations of a single-pivot suspension design with a linkage actuated shock. Historically, we referred to this as four-bar suspension. Some criticism has been directed towards Kona for not incorporating new systems over the years. Which begs the question, why have we focused on refinement rather than reinvention? The answer from our Product Group: Independence. Suspension design is an exercise in finding balance. Our bikes feature the legendary feel of The Kona Ride: efficient, smooth, predictable and intuitive. For our designers, this means extensive study of the relationship between leverage rate curve, pivot placement, geometry, intended use and fit. These ride characteristics come to life through an unwavering attention to detail, not newfangled suspension gimmicks. In short, our history and intimacy with the same suspension philosophy allows us to achieve all the performance attributes we find necessary when it comes to making dual-suspension mountain bikes. For 2014, our dual-suspension bikes feature three suspension configurations: Swinger, Beamer and Rocker. It’s important to note that while these suspension platforms look different, they’re functionally the same: single-pivot suspension designs with a linkage actuated shock. Balancing these independent suspension designs creates the consistent Kona Ride across our wide range of dual-suspension bikes.

The little details of frame geometry make up the perfect ride. Kona’s relentless focus on finding the best balance of these details for a given discipline gives every one of our bikes the distinct Kona Ride. Kona Independent Suspension allows us to tweak the angles and the dimensions of our bikes down to the exact millimeter.

RIDE-SPECIFIC LEVERAGE RATE CURVE Careful consideration of rider needs, shock tunes and hours upon hours of hard work selecting pivot locations are the keys to figuring out the kinematics of suspension performance. Our leverage rate curves are designed to provide the best ride for certain applications. How do we do that? By making the suspension predictable throughout the travel and easy to tune.

DURABILITY Tested in the Pacific Northwest, our prototype frames spend their winters on the North Shore and in the muck and mud of Washington. Summer finds them in the Whistler Bike Park or all-day rides in the alpine. What have we learned from all of this? That widely spaced pivots featuring oversized bearings stop early-bearing wear from side loading and create better resistance to pressure washers.

KONA INDEPENDENT SUSPENSION ROCKER INDEPENDENT SUSPENSION Different riders have different needs, but Trail and Enduro riders need a lot of everything—from downhill performance to stable pedaling. With Rocker Independent Suspension we found a healthy balance between the down and the up, while also designing a suspension platform that was as compact and low-slung on the frame as possible for maximum standover, stiffness and maneuverability. We developed our Rocker Independent Suspension to achieve all of these goals by creating a consistent leverage rate curve that perfectly matches currently available air shocks. This allows the suspension to provide a stable pedaling platform, while giving the rider a predictable feel throughout the travel. TECHNOLOGY BRIEF

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: Introducing the new 2014 Carbon Operator, the next step in Kona’s long tradition of DH bike technology. While it’s important to note this is the first time we’ve used carbon in a Gravity application, that’s not all we’ve done here.

GEOMETRY, LEVERAGE RATE CURVE AND RIDE PERFORMANCE: We made subtle tweaks to the geometry and leverage rate curve, noticeably increasing the balance, predictability and maneuverability of the new 2014 Operators.

TECHNOLOGY BRIEF

NEW CARBON OPERATOR

NEW-SCHOOL RIDE PERFORMANCE We enjoy the new-school trails—smooth, bermed with jumps—and have learned a lot about being light of foot. We’ve taken those lessons back to our home turf and found new lines with this evolved approach to geometry and suspension design. We do not want to create bikes that ride like couches. We think that’s boring, slow and not fun. We decided to make a unique DH bike—one that you ride, not one that rides you.

RIDE FEEL BEFORE AXLE PATH It’s one of many factors that must be balanced to make a World Cup-level bike. If you only listen to the Internet, however, you would find it nearly impossible to make it down a rocky trail without a perfectly rearward axle path. Geometry (making the bike maneuverable), leverage rate curve (making the bike predictable and easily tunable) is more important than selling the soul of the bike for a “perfect” axle path. (What is perfect anyway?). A bike that is maneuverable uses its travel prudently and is intuitively responsive to rider input, allowing the rider to skim over technical terrain faster than plowing through.

MORE PROGRESSIVE LEVERAGE RATE CURVE Compared to the original Operator, we’ve made the leverage rate curve more progressive at the beginning of the stroke. We did this for several reasons: it keeps the bike higher in the travel by making the initial travel stiffer in compression, as well as providing faster initial rebound. It also matches the initial leverage rate curve of currently available forks so front and rear suspension are more in synch. The curve is more progressive at the beginning of the stroke, and consistently so through the travel, providing the rider with a predictable and easily tuned bike. It is also easier on the rear damper as there are no sudden spikes in force on the shock caused by rapid changes in the leverage rate curve.

FRAME FEATURES

THESE DROPOUTS ARE HOLLOW TECHNOLOGY: We spent a considerable amount of time on these dropouts. They are machined out and hollow, but we have hidden this from you so hollow spaces are also hidden from rocks, muck and loam. The lines and shape of the dropouts (and chainstays) were kept as clean as possible to avoid hanging up on anything. Dual pinch bolts for maximum stiffness.

OVERSIZE BEARINGS: Large bearings are used to increased durability via resistance to wear from side loading and pressure washers. We use two standard industrial-sized bearings on the frame that are inexpensive and easily sourced worldwide. The outer race bearing seat has been machined to allow for easy removal of the bearing by pushing only on the outer race without specialized bearing tools. All bearings are held in the frame, this prevents off-axis loading when pivots are torqued.

12 X 157 REAR O.L.D. SPACING: Same advantages as 12x142mm—easy rear-wheel placement, lateral stiffness.

UD MONOCOQUE KONA CARBON DH FRONT TRIANGLE: Why Carbon? Because we could make the frame stronger and lighter. We’ve taken a different approach, avoiding fashionably stylized tube shapes and focusing on round tubes, which are still the best performers in terms of overall strength, stiffness and dent resistance.

DOWNTUBE PROTECTOR LOW MOUNTED REAR SHOCK: Rear shock is mounted low on the frame for better center of gravity and upside down to minimize swing weight.

NEW PROCESS PLATFORM

TECHNOLOGY BRIEF

PROCESS OVERVIEW – ONE PLATFORM, THREE BIKES, SIX MODELS Different riders have different needs. Riders all over the world struggle to define what Trail, All Mountain or Enduro riding is. When it came to designing the ultimate platform of bikes for technical off-road riding, we saw the need to develop a versatile product line to fit the needs of every definition. Our prime design directive was to find the best possible balance of geometry, travel and wheel size. As a result, we came up with some very specific travel numbers that complement the design, wheel size and intended use of specific models. The results are our three Process bikes: the 111, 134 and 153.

GEOMETRY – CHALLENGING TRADITION Trail and Enduro bikes currently on the market are still subject to the traditional fit and sizing mountain bikes took from road-bike sizing, where seat tube length defined the size, and stem lengths increased with the frame size. This doesn’t make sense given what today’s riders are trying to do on their Enduro bikes: pedal them like XC bikes and descend them like DH bikes. So we rethought the equation with a holistic approach: stem-length, reach, toptube length, chainstay length, front center, and wheelbase, all relevant to the fit, form and function of the modern mountain bike.

GEOMETRY FEATURES

NEW PROCESS PLATFORM

STEM LENGTH

LONGER TOPTUBES

Critical to how the bike steers: short stems provide stiff and quick handling. This is especially important when the headtube angle gets slacker. Additionally, taller riders should not be penalized with slower steering and flexible 90mm stems. In our opinion, long stems have no place on serious trail bikes.

In high-speed situations, a perceived downside of short chainstays is that wheelbase is reduced and stability is negatively affected. We’ve countered this effect by lengthening the toptube, increasing the overall wheelbase. The result is stability at speed without compromising lowspeed handling.

SEAT TUBE

SLACK HEAD ANGLE

With the adoption of dropper posts, the seat tube itself no longer needs to define the size of the bike, allowing us to lower our toptubes to the absolute minimum on all sizes. And we do mean all sizes: the XL has the same minimal standover as the small.

Keeps the bike stable at speed and allows the bike to roll out of steep terrain confidently. One of the downsides of slack head angles is that it makes the bike handle more slowly, more awkwardly and less responsively at reduced speeds—this is exacerbated by wide bars. Short stems counteract this effect of slack head angle allowing for quick handling of the bike at slow speeds.

SHORT CHAINSTAYS

SUSPENSION – CONSISTENT LEVERAGE RATE CURVE

Improves the handling of the bike at slow speeds, cornering in all situations, jump-ability and overall bike stiffness.

With our new Process platform, we’ve developed a very consistent leverage rate curve that perfectly matches currently available air shocks. This allows the suspension to provide a stable pedaling platform while giving the rider a predictable feel throughout the travel.

FRAME FEATURES

FRAME DETAILS – A STANDARDIZED APPROACH With the Process platform, we made a distinct effort to have all of the bikes share many of the same frame details. This helps both the consumer and dealer on many levels, most notably ease of maintenance, standardized replacement parts, and a succinct story when it comes to selling the bicycles. For the consumer, it allows them to easily determine which model is right for them as all frame, geometry, suspension and design features represent a progression. The decision on which bike to select is then based on their own style of riding and the terrain their most often exposed to.

STIFF, COMPACT REAR TRIANGLE: • 12x142 Maxle rear axle • Hydroformed Kona 6069 Aluminum Butted seatstays • Large bearings mated to large outer-dimension thru-axles • Compact geometry • Carbon Bridged Rocker—the lightest, stiffest rocker possible • SRAM S3 / Shimano E2 front derailleur mount

NEWCARBON CYCLOCROSS Welcome to the future. Brand new for 2014, the real deal full-on cyclocross race machine—a redesign of our carbon CX race monocoque frame and fork for disc brakes only. While we were at it, we increased chainstay diameter to maintain stiffness during out-of-thesaddle efforts and decreased seatstay diameter to preserve our famous ride quality. Equipped with the best parts money can buy—SRAM red 11-speed drive train with hydraulic brakes and a lightweight Stan’s tubeless wheelset— this bike is so hot you’ll want to ride it in the off season as well, so we’ve included hidden fender eyelets and two bottle mounts. The Kona Super Jake, if you can’t win on this you’re not trying.

SUPER JAKE/ MAJOR JAKE

10MM THIN SEATSTAYS: The seatstays on the new Major Jake/Super Jake pushed the limit of molding technology at only 10mm in diameter. This allows for complaince in the ride while the power is still transfered directly via the large chainstays.

TUCKED DISC BRAKE MOUNT: The rear brake mount is tucked in between the seatstay and chain stay as tight as possible. Clipping a shoe on the brake is not a problem on these bikes, and the cable routing is direct for both cable and hydro brakes.

CYCLOCROSS DISC We like to ride our cross bikes a lot. It’s a fun way to breathe new life into old terrain. In the off season our ‘cross bikes often pull rest-day singletrack missions to keep the drop bar skillset fresh. Adding disc brakes to an already amazing platform allows the rider more “ambitious” line choices on techy singletrack without the loss of braking power during the descent. Disc brakes on the Major Jake/Super Jake add to their versatility for multiple applications. Let’s face it, rim brakes don’t always cut it.

STEALTH FENDER MOUNTS: Hidden fender mounts allow riding all winter long, without doing a load of laundry after every ride. The fender mounts can be removed along with the fenders to prevent damage, and for a flush look.

KONA RACE LIGHT CARBON

GEOMETRY

Kona Race Light Carbon frames are built with a monocoque main triangle that allows continuous fibers at the tube junctures, resulting in a stronger and lighter overall structure. Our production process also eliminates as much bonded-in aluminum inserts as possible. When we do put alloy into the frame we take very specific steps on their surface treatment and have special jigs for each step to ensure proper alignment. Kona Race Light Carbon frames are only molded with internal air bags, which are removed after the molding process. This means our carbon frames are made from only the best ingredients: carbon fiber and epoxy.

DI2 CABLE ROUTING: Set the frame up with Shimano Di2 or standard cables. Either way this frame will be forward compatible for a long time to come.

KONA CARBON RACE LIGHT UD MONOCOQUE FRAME/FORK:

PF30 BB SHELL:

No shortcuts taken with the tube-to-tube process here. A full monocoque front end with a tapered headtube and carbon fork give you the most responsive, lightest ride possible.

Uses standard pressfit bottom bracket plastic cups to prevent creaking bearings and damage to the frame. Also, set your Major Jake/Super Jake up single speed with an eccentric bottom bracket.

EXTERNAL REAR BRAKE HOSE: While internal brake hoses look sweet, not everyone can afford to bring two bikes to a cross race. Keeping these bikes serviceable is a priority for Kona.

NEW CARBON / MAjOR/SUPER jAKE

CARBON ROAD ZONE ONE/ZONE TWO Our Zone series of Road Endurance bikes is the culmination of three years of research and design. We thought of everything, from a monocoque Kona Carbon Race frame that balances comfort and speed, efficiency and durability, to increased tire clearance and hidden fender eyelets for winter training. Incorporating all of the elements needed to ride the Long Sweet Road for a sweet long time, the Zone One/Two bikes are our top drawer Endurance road bikes, perfect for Gran Fondo, road racing, even all-day gravel road adventures.

INCREASED TIRE CLEARANCE: Our proprietary Kona Carbon Race unidirectional monocoque frame comes with clearance to accommodate 28c tires with full length fenders or 32c tires without fenders, a design feature for riders who want wider tires with better traction, shock absorption, and durability for rough roads or winter training.

HIDDEN FENDER EYELETS: Mount real fenders securely and without hassle.

PRESS FIT 30 BB SHELL: Stiffer, stronger, lighter 30mm-diameter spindle.

INTERNAL CABLE ROUTING: Two sets of specific hardware that allows for internal routing for electronic shifting systems or mechanical shifting systems.

ENDURANCE-INSPIRED GEOMETRY: We worked closely with legendary road bicycle manufacturer Dedacciai of Campagnola, Italy, to create a custom-designed monocoque carbon road bike that’s comfort oriented but still nimble and agile. Compared to modern race geometry, our angles are slightly more relaxed, with ideal chainstay length, top tube lengths and headtube heights that allow for a variety of fit needs—a touch of classic road geometry for a ride that’s stable in descents and rough roads, yet still fast as hell.

TUBELESS WHEELSET: Results in a better quality ride feel, with more air volume for increased pinch flat and puncture protection, the ability to run lower tire pressure for better surface contact, and a laterally stiffer rim with the same given overall weight. Zone One/ Zone Two comes with standard tires and tubes, but the wheelset gives the consumer the ability to use a true UST road tire of their choosing.

CUSTOM KONA/DEDACCIAI DESIGNED MONOCOQUE FORK: Features slight curve for a forgiving, smooth and compliant ride.

PURPOSE BUILT: With a frame weight of sub 1000 grams, we set out to create a lightweight bike featuring the very best and most advanced materials available that wouldn’t be too brittle or delicate. Zone One/Two are not limited to the confines of glass-top black asphalt—it’s tough enough to go down the dirt road.

2014 TECHNOLOGY SIZING & FIT KONA SIZING & FIT Sizing and fit have always been one of the main strengths of the Kona Ride. With more stock sizes available than any other bike company, our size scale is designed to be continuous from platform to platform and is easy to understand from the perspective of the consumer because our simplified system allows easy fine-tuning that creates a perfect marriage of bike and rider. When it's called for, seat posts are either offset or straight to maximize the reach and power output of the rider. More importantly, our comprehensive bike sizing allows Kona dealers and riders to determine their fit more easily from model to model and category to category.

2014 KONA TECHBOOK / MOUNTAINBIKE / 27.5 - 29” TRAIL HARDTAIL Welcome to the House of the Big Wheel. We’ve been building 29-inch wheel hardtail mountain bikes for as long as anybody in the bike industry. It’s no surprise, then, that we know while these bikes represent the ultimate blend of simplicity and performance, it takes serious expertise to maximize their potential and to push the limits of function and intended use. With a decade of experimenting and innovating behind us, having created bikes like the genre-defining Honzo and the Titanium Raijin, it’s safe to say we know how to design amazing 29-inch hardtails for every need.

This year it gets a fancy upgrade in the form of a Reynolds 520 Butted Cromoly frameset—truth be told, there is nothing like the ride feel of sweet steel. The Unit also comes with tubeless ready rims and the pinnacle in mechanical disc brakes. The ultimate in elegance and simplicity, joined at the hip, at a price that won’t cost you an arm (or a leg).

wo At Kona we pride ourselves on making purpose-oriented bikes. With Kona dealers from Alaska to Greenland, and Florida to Australia, our first foray into the world of fat bikes came with great excitement. Introducing the Wo! Built out of Kona Butted 6061 Aluminum, with a 170mm rear axle, 100mm BB, a 31.6 dropper compatible seat post and low standover, the Wo is built to balance weight, performance and price. At long last, the Kona Ride comes to hard-packed snow, sand dunes, swamp or whatever other fat-wheel-loving surface you may ride. GEOMETRY Size

2014 KONA TECHBOOK / MOUNTAINBIKE / RACELIGHT

There’s nothing like going rocket-fast.Since crosscountry legend Joe Murray designed some of our first bikes back in 1988, we’ve always been focused on creating incredibly light, ridiculously fast mountain bikes. From our technically capable Hei Hei series of dual-suspension models to the legendary ride of the Kahuna hardtails, no one puts more fun into going fast than Kona.

PRECEPT DELUXE An entirely new model for 2014, the Precept DL is best described as the entry-level version of our brand-new Process bikes. Race enduro, ride singletrack all day, enjoy amazing descents: this bike can do it all. Using our Swinger Suspension and 27.5-inch wheels, the Precept DL has a lot of the same modern features as the Process: direct-mount front derailleur, dropper-post cable routing and a full complement of cartridge bearings. It even has similar geometry to the Process 134: same BBH, same chainstay length and same 68-degree headtube angle. With RockShox suspension front and rear, and a capable trail cockpit (60mm stem, 740mm bar), for the money, the Precept DL might be the most ripping trail bike ever. GEOMETRY Size

SATORI

We’ve spent the past three years working towards the most complete platform of mountain bikes we’ve ever produced. We’ve thought of everything from intended use, ease of maintenance and rider fit to wheel size, and of course, ride performance. No stone has been left unturned. Featuring our new Rocker Suspension, our Process series of Enduro bikes is designed to attack technical terrain, up, down and all the way around.

SPECIFICATIONS PROCESS 134 DELUXE FRAME MATERIAL Creating the perfect Enduro bike is an exercise in finding the perfect balance between geometry, pedal efficiency, rolling resistance, travel, SIZES REAR ShocK weight, stiffness, durability, price, the list goes on. With our all-new FoRK Process 134 DL, we set out to find that ideal balance. ENTOURAGE

ENTOURAGE Introduced in 2012, the Entourage returns for 2014 best described as the ultimate in DH/freeride fun. The 170mm travel Entourage is the Operator on a travel diet. Designed to be quicker, faster and more maneuverable than a standard 200mm DH rig, this bike is all about ramping the rad quotient to the next level. No surprise, then, that it’s Kona Team superstar Graham Agassiz’s bike of choice. It has super-short 415mm chainstays and geometry specifically designed to broaden your gravity horizons. If being airborne and high-speed antics are your thang, make sure to bring your Entourage. GEOMETRY Size

OPERATOR

SPECIFICATIONS OPERATOR FRAME MATERIAL Our goal with the new Kona Carbon DH Operator was to create an SIZES affordable, race-ready, modern downhill bike, and that meant using REAR ShocK a unidirectional monocoque front triangle frame that represents the FoRK cRAnKARMS cutting edge of carbon bike manufacturing. To weather the brunt of crash and shuttle damage, the rear triangle features 6061 stays, hollow chAInRIngS B/B aluminum rockers with a carbon bridge, resulting in a rear triangle that’s PEdALS chAIn three times stiffer than our previous Operator. We also changed the FREEwhEEL kinematics of the Operator’s Beamer Independent Suspension, making chAInguIdE it more progressive off the top, helping the bike to stay up higher in the R/d travel and recover from hits more quickly. versatile “Outstandingly commuter. ” –Ride on, australia

DEW PLUS Because feeling good on your bike is one of life’s great gifts, this year we’ve taken one of our staple commuters and sprinkled it with newness. We started with the frame: the headtube is now oversized, using an internal headset cup and an oversized fork crown, and we’ve also given it the right eyelets so it can easily take our after-market Kona front rack.

2014 KONA TECHBOOK / / CYCLOCROSS

We’ve been making Cyclocross bikes with great passion since 1997. With one of the world’s best female cross racers in Helen Wyman and a long legacy of supporting the discipline all over the World— both on a grassroots and professional level—we are excited 2014 represents our most comprehensive lineup of Cyclocross bikes to date. Make sure you check out our brand-new Super Jake.

SPECIFICATIONS jAKE FRAME MATERIAL The 2014 Jake holds nothing back; it’s ready for anything you want to throw at it. Commute it, tour it, race it, ride it. A 7005 series frame with SIZES FoRK svelte seatstays and sturdy chainstays lets you put the power down cRAnKARMS when you need to but doesn’t make your kidneys pay for it on the rough chAInRIngS B/B stuff. We’ve spec’d a 2x10 crank and a wide-range 11-30 cassette to PEdALS eliminate weight and gear overlap found on a triple crank, but we still chAIn FREEwhEEL provide the high-end speed you need. The Kona Jake can do it all.

SPECIFICATIONS jAKE THE SNAKE FRAME MATERIAL We’ve pulled out all the stops to bring our most popular Cyclocross SIZES bike to the front of the starting line. SPECIFICATIONS MAjOR jAKE The Major Jake is packed with value from the top down, ground up, front FRAME MATERIAL SIZES to back and side to side. We took the same redesigned full carbon CX FoRK Race monocoque disc-brake frame and fork we use on the Super Jake cRAnKARMS to get the ball rolling. We increased chainstay size to maintain stiffness chAInRIngS during out-of-the-saddle efforts and decreased the size of the seatstays B/B PEdALS to preserve our famous ride quality. Add a Stan’s NoTubes Iron Cross chAIn FREEwhEEL tubeless wheelset, Shimano Ultegra drivetrain, TRP Spyre dual-pull mechanical brakes and you’ve got the deal of the season. SUTRA Our classic touring bike receives a facelift for 2014. We’ve taken our massively successful Rove frame and blended it with the styling and class of our Sutra from years past. The bike features solid front and rear Blackburn racks, as well as bar end shifters for simplicity. The oversized 44mm headtube gives a more precise ride while the steel tubing keeps things plush and smooth. Our new drop bar, the Wet Bar, features flared drops and a short reach to keep things comfortable during long descents.

2014 KONA TECHBOOK / KIDS

From our XC racers to our downhill rippers, even our asphalt and city bikes, you could say all of our bikes are kids bikes. Why? Well, for us, the Kona Ride is all about two key life elements: fun and freedom. That’s the mindset that drives the development of this most crucial category. Because if every kid isn’t fun and free on Kona Kids’ bikes, well, we don't have a pedal to stand on.
