t is nice to see the weather change from rain to glorious Florida Sunshine but the reminder that the Holidays are 50 days away is somewhat frightening. So hard to believe that we are already in November, before you know it, we will blink and 2013 will be rolling in! If the world doesn’t end first! It is amazing how quickly time passes and how we grow older the days seem shorter, hours turn to minutes and before you know it, our journey is over, each of our lives a perpetual journey to the same cessation. As we navigate our footprints, it is important for us to consider what matters in life. Remove the things, the status’s, the friends and the definitions. What’s left? You! Now, ask yourself this question, what have I done, was it good? Did my life help that of others? Was I purposeful, committed, and selfless? Did my walk on earth impact others? Was it negative, positive? As our year comes to an end and the season of giving is among us, remember to do your part! No matter your status, or economic burden, the process of giving is easy. Your gift can come as freely as the smile on your face, the pennies in your cup holder or lending of ear. At times there is no way to comprehend the significance of your actions, words, gestures, time or donations will positively impact the lives of others.

Do your part to Play it Forward! Find charitable organizations in your community and get involved! Often times you will find that giving your time is more than enough. Volunteering is the cheapest and easiest form of giving, the only requirement is you! Looking forward to 2013 we are excited about how far we have come! Personally, four years ago, I would have never imaged that I could do all of this! But with Ken behind me, little staff, a little investment and, the love of my family, anything is possible! My Legends Rally Rout

2012 American Legends Rally – South Carolina

s you may know by now, I love to ride. Any chance I get I am packing Black Beauty for a couple thousand miles journey into the unknown. On September 28, 2012 I was on the road again heading for Columbia, South Carolina for the inaugural American Legends Rally. This unlike previous long distance events would be a two day (28 hour) challenge to the riders’ navigational and mapping abilities. I had already secured a top notch and proven navigator in Angela Bauldree, who also happens to be my fiancé (I am a lucky man). Angela and I had been working on navigational scenarios two weeks prior to the event and had derived a solid plan to make us competitive for this and future events. So far it’s working, here’s how I did!

learned during the American Motorcycle Rally back in June that navigation can make or break you. Angela and I had worked on navigation for two weeks prior to the Legends event. I purchased a Droid tablet for better data collection, visibility and guidance. Mike installed a charging system to sustain the tablet. Kristen helped her Mom with putting together the maps and route and watched me at all times to make sure I stayed on track. The girls and my folks talked with me throughout the entire event. I could not have asked for a better team of navigators, my girls are awesome. 6 • Bikes & Beauties • November 2012

Mechanic Mike Cloudas – Peterson’s Harley Davidson lack Beauty returned from the Hoka Hey with a couple of issues. She also needed a full service, new tires, and she had to be outfitted with The Cloudas (5 gallon secondary fuel tank). The issues Mike and the crew at Peterson’s Harley had to deal with were a bad compensator sprocket, and a screwy electrical issue which kept showing a charging system error. Mike, Billy and the guys at the shop worked tirelessly on Wednesday and Thursday just before my departure to South Carolina to get the issue resolved. A new stator and voltage regulator were installed; load tests were done on both batteries. I sat and watched while Mike took every single fuse and circuit breaker out of the fuse box, cleaned them and the fuse box and then replaced each item with a new one. It worked, once I left Peterson’s Harley Davidson, the electrical issue was gone and Black Beauty ran like a brand new Harley off the show room floor even though she is pushing over 105,000 miles. How many of us have dreamed of taking that road trip across our great land? How many have longed to ride to Sturgis, Daytona, or Laconia, the biggest and the best motorcycle events in America. Have you seen Mount Rushmore in South Dakota or the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the Redwood National Forest, or Rocky Mountain National Park? Have you been thrilled by the adrenaline pumping Tale of the Dragon in the Great Smokey Mountains, or been lulled almost to sleep crossing the mid western states only to be awakened by the mountains beauty of New Mexico, and Arizona? Have you asked yourself lately; What am I missing? I will tell you this; these and many more of American’s great landmarks and roadways have been destinations, checkpoints, and points of interest on many of the 2012 long distance endurance competitions. Riders, just like you have taken part in these epic adventures and

he bike’s passenger seat swept up just enough that I could see over my father’s shoulders. That seat was my throne. My dad and I traveled many back roads, searching for the ones we had never found before, traveling these roads just to see where they went, never in a rush. Just be home for supper. I remember wandering down a back road with my father, sitting on my throne watching the trees whiz by, feeling the rumble of our bike beneath us like a contented giant cat. A motorcycle came over a hill toward us and as it went by, my father threw up his gloved clutch hand and gave a little wave. The other biker waved back with the same friendly swing of his left wrist. I tapped my father on his shoulder, which was our signal that I wanted to say something. He cocked his helmeted ear back slightly while keeping his eyes ahead. I yelled, “Do we know him?” “What?” he shouted. “You waved to him. Who was it?” “I don’t know. Just another guy on a bike. So I waved.” “How come?” “You just do. It’s important.” Later, when we had stopped for chocolate ice cream, I asked why it was important to wave to other bikers. My father tried to explain how the wave demonstrated comradeship and a mutual understanding of what it was to enjoy riding a motorcycle. He looked for the words to describe how almost all bikers struggled with the same things like cold, rain, heat, and car drivers who did not see them. However, they all still loved riding and considered it almost pure pleasure. I was young then and I am not sure that I really understood what he was trying to get across, but it was a beginning. After that, I always waved along with my father when we passed other bikers. I remember one cold October morning when the clouds were heavy and dark, giving us another clue that winter was rolling in from just over the horizon. My father and I were warm inside our car as we headed to a friend’s home. Rounding a comer, we saw a motorcycle parked on the shoulder of the road. Past the bike, we saw the rider walking through the ditch, scouring the long grasses crowned with a touch of frost. We pulled over and backed up to where the bike stood. I asked Dad, “Who’s that?” www.BikesBeauties.com

“Don’t know,” he replied. “But he seems to have lost something. Maybe we can give him a hand.” We left the car and wandered through the tall grass of the ditch to the biker. He said that he had been pulling on his gloves as he rode and he had lost one. The three of us spent some time combing the ditch, but all we found were two empty cans and a plastic water bottle. My father turned and headed back to our car and I followed him. He opened the trunk and threw the cans and the water bottle into a small cardboard box that we kept for garbage. He rummaged through various tools, oil containers and windshield washer fluid until he found an old crumpled pair of brown leather gloves. Dad straightened them out and handed them to me to hold. He continued looking until he located an old catalogue. I understood why my dad had grabbed the gloves. I had no idea what he was going to do with the catalogue. We headed back to the biker who was still walking the ditch. My dad said, “Here’s some gloves for you. And I brought you a catalogue as well.” “Thanks,” he replied. “I really appreciate it.” He reached into his hip pocket and withdrew a worn black wallet. “Let me give you some money for the gloves,” he said as he slid some bills out. “No thanks,” my dad replied as I handed the rider the gloves. “They’re old and not worth anything anyway.” The biker smiled and said, “Thanks a lot.” He pulled on the old gloves and then he unzipped his jacket. I watched as my father handed him the catalogue and the biker slipped it inside his coat. He jostled his jacket around to get the catalogue sitting high and centered under his coat and zipped it up. I remember nodding my head at the time, finally making sense of why my dad had given him the catalogue. It would keep him a bit warmer. After wishing the biker well, my father and I left him warming up his bike. Two weeks later, the biker came to our home and returned my father’s gloves. He had found our address on the catalogue. Neither my father nor the biker seemed to think that my father stopping at the side of the road for a stranger and giving him a pair of gloves, and that stranger making sure that the gloves were returned, were events at all out of the ordinary for people who rode motorcycles. For me, it was another subtle lesson. It was spring the next year when I was sitting high on my throne, watching the farm fields slip by when I saw two bikes (Continued in next issue)

moved to South Florida nearly six years ago, destination Hollywood. Initially, to the East Plunkett section before settling in the area know as Hollywood Hills. I loved my little neck of the woods, conveniently located just South of Fort Laudy and North of Miami, 20 minutes (with no traffic) to all the places I love! Some within walking distance and every type of convenient store, to get just about anything you could possible need, at any hour, all in a few blocks! From day one, I always heard locals referring to my new favorite Florida Beach, as “Holly-Weird Central.” I never got it! PLUS, I never paid much attention to anything a random stranger was doing. Yes, I people watch but, it’s not like I have all this free time in the hood! Funny how time goes by and it takes a girlfriend visiting from out of state to bring it all back to light! One little Johnson Street observation turns into the sheer definition of the meaning! Hollywood, Florida is for sure, THE Holly-Weird! Leaving the house heading down Johnson East, you see a lot of people, all types, especially along the I-95 corridor, but what exactly are you suppose to say when you see an Easy-Go Scooter hauling a$$ down the sidewalk and, when I say hauling a$$, I’m obviously NOT talking about speed! I’m talking about the actual load of shit! Nothing says big baller like driving your barefooted woman to the beach on your hover round, sitting atop a water cooler so she can lounge comfortably on the back. These two had everything, booze, chairs, crutches, umbrella, carton of smokes and a broken leg! They were happy to have our attention as they waved when they went on by. Just about the time we reach the corner of US 1 & Johnson St, My GF, chirps, “What the hell, where are all these people coming from, I have never seen so many questionables just walking, this place is crazy!” We shared a little laugh, described the area and moved on. There was no flash back to the term Holly-Weird, in my mind it was just a typical Saturday! It wasn’t until we were resting peacefully in the sand to receive our post “Hurricane Sandy” sand blasted exfoliation, that the true meaning of the term set it!

There is only way to start this little transmission of thought, deliver it the very way it was transmitted to myself, evoking the need to spout this obvious observation! In the words of the drunken lady splashing about in the ocean underneath a double red flag warning as the life guard comes to save her, “This chit be cray!! OMG, WTF, is the BFD, LOL, and all that other boo-chit! You see that lady over there licking her friend! OMG I just want to go pee!” As we watch the spectacle unfold before us, my GF goes, “Say Hello to Crazy!” We look towards the so called lady licking her friend, and sure as shit! Not only is she licking, but stroking, caressing, rubbing and it wasn’t one lady it was 2 ladies and three men all sitting on one little mat, all bunched together, in an obviously abundant outpouring of free love, smoking a pipe, with something from a medicine dropper. Everything cools down and before you know it, beach patrol is heading our way! “Oh yeah! Here comes the free show,” I chuckled! Instead of the ATV Moto-Patrol going to stop at the free love druggies or the obnoxious alcoholics, he stops at the June and Ward Cleaver tourist drinking beer from a can! Walking back to the truck, we all shared a laugh about the three hour freak show along the shoreline! Just as we round the corner to the parking garage, we nearly get ran over by the man on the cellophane bike! My husband barks in, “They don’t call it Holly-Weird for nothing! Now you get it?” It’s true! I have to admit, you can’t make the shit up and I am not sure where all the freaks in Hollywood came from but, in my eyes, I said, “As long as they aren’t hurting anyone, what’s it matter!?” By the time the weekend was over, it was time to say goodbye to my visitor. Arriving at the airport to bid a farewell, Holly-Weird came back around full circle. Grandpa Go-Go was on his way to Fantasy Fest and had no time to change, I don’t think I can say anything else, the picture is enough! AND that my friends, DEFINES, Weird, Hollywood, Florida! Some call it paradise, some, “this chit be CRAY!!!”

Harley’s, BMWs, Honda’s, Kawasaki’s, and Suzuki’s pair off against one another for the top motorcycle manufacturer in tests of reliability, maneuverability and comfort for the thousand mile a day events. What are you waiting for, there are 10 events scheduled for 2013. The Legends Motorcycle Rally has started a series of competitions where all makes, and models are eligible for participation. Two 28 hour events are scheduled for January and February in Sunny South Florida with events being scheduled in Louisiana, Texas, New York, Missouri, and South Carolina. These two day events pay $5,000 to $10,000 in cash to the top finishers. There are several week long events scheduled in June and August. The American Motorcycle Rally scheduled for June 15 in Columbus, Ohio has secured $50,000 in cash and prizes for their weeklong event. That means plenty of opportunity for you to get on your motorcycle and see what this great land has to offer and what you are made of while competing for cash, prizes, and recognition for your achievement. BLOOD SUGAR & INSULIN LEVELS ARE CRUCIAL FACTORS FOR WEIGHT LOSS By: Silke Ullmann, MPH, RD, LDN

lood sugar and insulin levels are not only important for people with diabetes, it is important to anyone looking to lose weight. A strong rise and/or decline of blood sugar and insulin can cause hunger attacks and inhibit fat loss. Keeping these levels balanced helps to avoid cravings and also improves the fat burning process, both contributing to successful and sustainable weight loss. How do blood sugar and insulin levels work? Carbohydrate foods contain glucose (= sugar). It is the main source of energy used by the body. Insulin is a hormone that helps your body’s cells use glucose. Insulin is produced in the pancreas and released into the blood when the amount of glucose in the blood increases. After you eat, your blood sugar levels increase. This increase causes your pancreas to release insulin so that your blood sugar levels do not get too high. Simply put, each time your blood sugar level increases, your insulin level increases as well. A high insulin level blocks the breakdown of fat and constant ups and downs in blood sugar and insulin levels can also make you feel hungry. Both of these effects can negatively influence your diet. Additionally, if blood sugar and insulin levels remain high over time, this will not only hinder your weight loss process but can also damage your eyes, kidneys, nerves, and blood vessels and can lead to diabetes. Therefore, keeping blood sugar and insulin levels balanced will benefit your weight and your health. How can you control your blood sugar and insulin levels? Not all carbohydrates elevate your blood sugar and insulin levels equally. Whether those levels increase a little or a lot depends on the glycemic index (GI) of the food you consume. The GI is a numerical scale used to indicate how fast and 14 • Bikes & Beauties • november 2012

how high a particular food can raise blood sugar levels. The lower the GI, the less your blood sugar will rise. Lean meats, fish, low-fat dairy products, vegetables and legumes (beans, peas and lentils), and whole grains are a good choice. When it comes to fruit, some are better than others. Berries and apples for instance have a lower glycemic index than watermelon or pineapple. Additionally, please keep in mind that there are different types of carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates (such as whole grain bread or brown rice) provide calories, vitamins, minerals and fiber. Foods that are high in processed, refined simple sugars, like candy, soda, syrups, provide socalled “empty” calories, as they contain very little nutrition. It is wise to limit these sugars. Glycemic index charts can be found online. In general, foods that have a GI that is below 55 should be preferred. To increase your intake of complex carbohydrates and to keep your blood sugar and insulin levels balanced: · Eat more vegetables and fruits. · Eat more whole-grain rice, breads and cereals. · Eat more legumes (beans, lentils and peas). · Eat more lean protein (low-fat dairy, lean meat or fish). Rule of thumb: READ THE LABEL, IF YOU CANT PRONOUNCE AN INGREDIENT, IT’S BAD

o, thanks to Susie’s great idea, I had a plan for Sunday, to find the guy with the 305 Honda Dream that wanted to buy the BSA Lightning but hadn’t sold his Honda yet. I had my cardboard “For Sale” sign made, but as I tried to nod off to sleep in order to get an early start Sunday morning, I kept tossing and turning, thinking things like “What if I don’t see him tomorrow? What if he already bought another bike? What if” when all of a sudden I got an elbow in the ribs and a stern rebuke from Susie, “Knock off the tossing and turning and go to sleep!!!” We got up early Sunday morning and it was another hot, sunny, August in NJ type day. Our destination was the Raritan Road Runners Poker Run, starting off in Red Bank, about 30 miles southeast of New Brunswick. Red Bank is located on the Navesink River, on the way to the Jersey Shore, so even though it is waterfront, it isn’t really considered the Shore, so it always had somewhat of an identity crisis as a town. It is, however, the birthplace and home of Count Basie, the famed musician. I remember seeing an article in Smithsonian Magazine a few months back while waiting in a doctor’s office, entitled “10 Best Small Towns in America” and Red Bank was of those 10 places. “Red Bank?” I thought. “RED BANK????” So I did a little research and found out that over the last 20 years or so Red Bank has transformed itself into a thriving cultural and arts center. Back in 1969 it was just another dirty, smelly, dumpy, NJ town. Oh, and speaking of the arts and culture, Red Bank is also the birthplace of Natalie Schafer. You all know who Natalie Schafer is. Wait! What? Oh, maybe, if you’re under 55 you might not know who Natalie Schafer is, but then again, no one under 55 even reads this column! Anyway, Natalie Schafer is the actress who played “Mrs. Thurston Howell III” on that icon of classic culture, “Gilligan’s Island” back in the 60’s. But I digress. Since the sign-in was 9:00am-11:00am we head out at 8:00am. The Lightning fires right up and Susie and I head south on Rt. 18, then east on Hwy 520, not really a highway at all at that time, but more like a central Jersey rural type two lane road. Unlike Dawn Patrol MC (formed in 1937) and Blue Star MC (formed in 1946) Raritan Road Runners MC was a new club, formed in late 1968, early 1969. This was to be their very first AMA District II sanctioned Poker Run, so no one really knew what to expect. Also unlike the other older clubs, RRR MC was a very family oriented club. They wore brilliant white vests with an elaborate embroidered Looney Tunes

Road Runner character (Beep! Beep!) on the back of the vest. Not exactly something that would put fear into the hearts of a family with young kids riding in a station wagon. But that was the whole point. For a new club, RRR MC had quite a large membership, close to 100, with most members riding BMWs, Honda 750 4s, and a smattering of British Vertical Twins. I didn’t recall seeing a single Harley amongst the ranks of the RRR MC. Even though it was a “family” oriented club, we were all assured that the party at the end of the poker run would be like all the others. The fee for riding the runs was all the same, $3.00/rider, $5.00/rider and passenger, and it included all the food you could eat, which generally consisted of burgers, hot dogs, chicken, and all the sides, along with all the draft beer you could drink. We arrived at the Elks Lodge in Red Bank about 9:10 am where the sign-in was all set-up and seemingly very well organized, which was a good thing. The first table was the sign-in where we paid our $5.00 and got our hands stamped as official participants, and the next table had those huge stainless steel urns full of fresh coffee, and trays of donuts, all included in the entry fee. Standing around drinking coffee and munching on a donut we saw a long line of bikes pull into the parking lot. It was Dawn Patrol MC, followed immediately by Blue Star MC, then Tri-County MC. Apparently the other clubs wanted to have a good show of support for the very first RRR MC Poker Run. Of course we had to walk over and say hello to all of those that we knew. First thing Louie did was reach into his left saddlebag, which was filled with a bunch of Rheingolds on ice. He pulled one out, then using the can opener he had attached to his belt with a light chain, he cracked one open and chugged half of it in one gulp. After a second gulp to finish off the can, he was then ready to greet Susie and I and his friends from the other clubs. While in the parking area, not forgetting my mission for the day, I took a look around for the guy with the 305 Honda Dream. Neither he nor the Dream were anywhere around. While yakking with our friends from Blue Star MC, Big George from Dawn Patrol MC approached us and asked “Can I speak to you two in private?” We nodded and took a few steps away where Big George said “We’d like both of you to come to the clubhouse this Friday night, we were hoping to get the two of you to join Dawn Patrol. And we’d also like for you to ride with us today. In the back, of course!” Susie and I were quite honored, but now my mission for the day was growing ever more complicated. I just had to find that guy!

No time for recess, so let’s entertain! This month were letting simplicity reign. With the holiday season rounding the corner, there is no better way to ease through the coming days! My Cold Asparagus & Lobster Salad and French Apple Tart are both elegant and, delicious. Serve your guests these treats and they will revel with delight! Have a great Thanksgiving. FRENCH APPLE TART • Serves 8

Ingredients For The Pastry • 1 Sheet of Puff Pastry For The Apples • 3 Granny Smith Apples • ½ cup sugar • 4 tables spoons cold unsalted butter, diced small • 1/3 cup apricot jelly • 2 tablespoons water

Directions

1. Pre heat oven to 400 degrees .Roll puff pastry to about 10 by 14 inches. Place on sheet lined with parchment paper. With a fork poke 10 holes in pastry. 2. Peel apple, cut in half, remove stem and cores, slice apples into ¼ inch slices. Place apples slices overlapping on a diagonally down the middle of the tart and continue with rows on both sides, until the pastry is covered with apples. Sprinkle with sugar and with the diced butter. 3. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, until the pastry is browned and edges of the apples start to brown. Don’t worry, the apple juices will burn in the pan but tart will be fine, When the tarts done ,heat the apricot jelly with the water, brush the apples with mixture. Sever warm or at room temperature.

Asparagus and Lobster Salad with Vinaigrette Dressing • Serves 4 Ingredients • 20 pieces of asparagus • 4 small cooked lobster tails • 5 ounces of arugula For The Vinaigrette • ¼ cup olive oil • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar • 2 teaspoons dijon mustard • 1 tablespoon shalottes • 1 teaspoon each of tarragon, basil, and oregano

Directions

1. Mix vinaigrette, set a side, 2. Cook asparagus in simmering water for about 3 minutes, then into ice bath , once they are cold, dry off. 3. Place 5 pieces on a plate, slice lobster into about 5 pieces and lay on top of asparagus, mix arugula with a little dressing, place a hand full on plate, then put one spoon full of vinaigrette on lobster and server immediately. Ride north to skull valley!

o once again this month I’m in Arizona and learned there is a good reason some of the Biggest Baddest Bike Builders live out here. For those of you that have never been out of South Florida, Riding out in Arizona is Whole nother ball game. Very hot in the valley and cooler as you climb the mountains. but you can ride for hours without putting your feet down. The first day we rode north to Skull Valley and stopped at the Skull Valley Cafe, I think it might seat 16. Owned by a Mexican father and son team and turning out serious Mexican food, Its always the little obscure joints with the best food. The next ride we ended up in Jerome where we stopped at a great joint hanging on the edge of a cliff called “The Haunted Hamburger”. Yup you guessed it they make really great burgers among other things. Another day we ended up in Kirkland at the Kirkland Bar and Steakhouse, we just had a couple of real Bloody Mary’s there. Made with fresh horseradish, spicy asparagus spears a dill pickle and olives. I think that gave me my full serving of vegetables for the day? Built in 1863 and well known as a brothel for stage coaches and rail road stops with 12 rooms and 1 bathroom to share. Still available to stay in at $25 a night, there is serious history here with a separate restaurant that is as rustic as the day it was built.

The best place we went to quite frequently was a Biker Bar called “The Hideaway Bar and Grill” in Cave Creek owned by Mark Bradshaw right next to the city of Care Free (The Beverly Hills of Az) I can tell you this is where you will see everybody who is anybody at this Biker Bar. Sponsored by bikers like Paul Yaffee, Roger Bourget, Nick Trask, Sinister cycles and The Big Jim Nasi all hang out at this biker Hot Spot. Even Hells Angel founder Sonny Barger stops by from time to time. They even have a small stage on the other side of the bikes only parking lot where local bands play while you are chilling out. CJ was our bartender and she seems to do the job of three bartenders, your new drink is ready as you hit the bottom of the one you are drinking and if she knows you, your drink is waiting for you if she spots you riding in on your bike. Amazing!!! Giant Pizza’s and sanadwiches like Ruebens, Philly CheeseSteaks, Half Pound Burgers and even salads are top notch, not just average. They even have a Barista there with 10 different coffees to keep your face from hitting the plate after such a good meal.

How I began motorcycle riding

ack in 1985 I was bartending and had two small children that I was raising alone. I met a man that had a young son and we started a friendship. He had a street motorcycle and I used to ride with him on the back. After awhile I realized how much I enjoyed riding and having the wind in my face. At that time I had the two young children and didn’t want to spend too much time away from them, so my friend taught me to ride a dirt bike. I purchased a Suzuki 175 for me and two Suzuki 50cc quad runners (ATV) for my kids. I used to take my kids camping with the dirt bike and the quads. We had loads of fun with my kids, my friend and his son. All of our holidays and school breaks were camping and riding our bikes. As my kids grew, I bought another dirt bike and then a four wheeler for myself and bigger four wheelers for my kids. To this day they both have four wheelers as adults. And we all still camp in the woods with the quads… Back in 1985 or 1986 I became an original member of the Wings of Gold with my friend. Bob Armchier was an amazing man. We did Friday night dinner rides. One week it would be a South ride, the next week would be a North ride. We only had one chapter back then and one Palm Beach rider who would travel to the meetings and dinner rides. In 1991 I purchased a Harley Davidson Low Rider and had it custom painted hot pink and white. I used to show the bike and won many trophies with it. After purchasing my own street bike, I would take one child and my friend would take the other. So both of my kids grew up around motorcycles and somewhat in the biker community (back in the day) doing bike shows and events with “mommy”. They still speak of the great memories they had doing the different bike games and winning raffles. When I bought my first Harley, there weren’t too many women riding then like there is today. So I guess you could say I used to turn heads, not just by being a woman with her hair blowing in the breeze, but a hot pink and white motorcycle with a white leather seat, it kinda stood out. I did the Fly and Ride program up in Vancouver B.C. back in the early

90s. I rode almost 3,800 miles over a three week period. I did the Alaskan Highway from start to finish. I rode all through British Columbia and parts of the Yukon. It was a trip of a lifetime. In 1999 I went to an 80 hour Police motorcycle training school to become a certified motorcycle officer. It was probably the toughest thing I have ever done in my Police career of 26 years now. The training was brutal, but I did it and became a “motor cop”. After a year on the Police motorcycle, the City’s lease was up and I got a new Road King for work, so I purchased my old work bike. Now I had my own Road King and transformed it into my personal bike, with my style. Yes, I added all the extra bells and whistles and of course lots of chrome!!! I kept the Road King and rode it until

the year 2000 when I purchased my Ultra Classic, which I still have today. Many of the bikers out there from the biker community I have had the opportunity to ride with. I also have organized many “rides” myself to different destinations. My girlfriend Sandee and I host the “S & M” Run to Ft. Myers Beach the last 5 years. Yes, the S & M stands for Sandee and Melanie!!! Get your mind out of the gutter. Well that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Ride safe and keep the rubber on the road ya’ll.

new england in the fall Greetings and Salutations!! Fall has arrived everywhere but here. As a photographer I look forward to travelling to the mountains of New England or North Carolina. This year I picked New Hampshire.

flew non-stop into Boston and picked up a rental car and proceded to go north on I-93. Two hours later I got off at exit 28 and picked up Rt. 49 to Watervillle Valley. I stopped in Waterville to have lunch at the local market. Waterville is a ski resort at the base of Mt. Tecumesh , elevation 4004 one of 48 mountains in New Hampshire that are at least 4,000 feet high. It is a town you can spend the weekend and walk to everything. Most people head back out of Waterville by going south on route 49 to get back on I-93 to go south to Boston or to go north into the White Mountains. I know a local road the will get you out to the north with out having to back track down Route 49. It is called Tripoli road, ask any local where it is. It will bring through the woods it is a rather bumpy narrow road with little room for 2 vehicles to get by. It is closed during the winter! At the end of the road I got back on 93 north to go to Lincoln , New Hampshire. Lincoln is a very busy little town with plenty of restaurants , motels, shops and campgrounds. A good spot to spend the night. Loon Mountain ski resort is here along with Clarks Trading Post home of the trained bears! I decided to go on a Moose Safari, we got skunked, nothing. The tour took us to

multiple locations in the area. During Columbus day weekend most of the motels , bed and breakfast’s and hotels require a 3 day stay. The best part of the road trip is cruising down the ‘’Kanc’’ as the locals call it. Other wise known as the Kacamangus Scenic Byway. A 26 mile two lane road that starts in Linclon and ends in Conway. The Byway is named after Chief Kacamangus from the Sagamore indian tribe meaning ‘’Fearless one” . The byway parallels the Swift River , it is a beautiful road with sweeping corners , scenic overlooks, and places to go for a hike to see waterfalls or grab a campsite. It even passes by a covered bridge! y now most of you have heard about the Bike Night Downtown Hollywood hosted by Bikes & Beauties Magazine. But, do you really know what it’s all about? About two years ago, we got a phone call from Peterson’s Harley-Davidson directing us that a gentleman (Alex Terife) who owned a business in downtown would like to develop a bike night in conjunction with a local charity and the Downtown Hollywood Business Association (DHBA). After getting nowhere with the city, Alex was searching for some help and help came in the form of our fearless leader, Christy.

After working diligently for 6 months to restructure the entire event to something that would be easily approved by the city, Alex was forced to part ways with the business, leaving Christy and the DHBA to pick up the pieces. Together they found a way around the city permitting issues and opting to instead purchase parking spots to be used for motorcycle parking and work out agreements with each establishment to offer bikers specials every Wednesday. A funny thing happens when financial loop holes are created, the city is now negotiating, at this time they have granted no permits.

or the past twenty years, Daytona Beach, Florida has held the annual Fall Rally, Biketoberfest. For the past 15 years I have attended this event. Every year has one common denominator; the only thing that changes is the attendance. Far removed from the days when you couldn’t get a room anywhere around Daytona, this year’s annual event was less than dismal. The crystal clear skies made for perfect riding conditions which is what most everyone we spoke to did. Pug Harvey of New Smyrna Beach said, “Oh yeah! The numbers are way down! Biketoberfest needs a complete overhaul before it is a thing of the past. But, man! We’ve ridden 363 miles today! I’d say that’s a good day!” We chose to keep to what we know is good and, from the looks of it, most everyone was doing the same thing! Our seasoned Photographer, Wayne Sysock of Orlando, took a ride up to Daytona to find all the goods you missed while you wore yourself out riding!

he very first year we were in business we participated in an event called Chili & Chaps in New Smyrna Beach right in the middle of Biketoberfest. Over the years, this event has grown into a unique experience along one of the most inviting streets on Florida’s East Coast, Flagler Avenue, a unique collection of shops, captivating galleries, fine restaurants, fun pubs and, cozy little inns. The best part is that you can walk from the river to the ocean enjoying the best New Smyrna Beach – Beachside! This year the Merchants of Flagler Avenue, a collaboration of stores, galleries, eateries and vendors all along Flagler Avenue in New Smyrna Beach, Florida held the annual event; now under a different name, but, remaining in honor of the all mighty Ta-Ta’s. Project Pink a conglomeration of merchants, displayed pink balloons outside their businesses allowing merchants to participate in three ways. From noon to 5:00 pm, Flagler Avenue’s hospitality business each served up 10 gallons of their favorite recipes for the chili cook-off. All proceeds from the $10 donation to taste the 20 different chili’s was all to benefit the Susan G Komen for the cure and Save the TaTas Foundation. In addition businesses also were invited to decorate an over-theshoulder-boulder-holder that was strung among the palm trees outside one of my favorite NSB Boutiques, Lo Lo’s. The “Bras for Ta Ta’s” allowed participants to come and make a $1.00 donation to vote for their favorite. For the entire week after the event the bra’s were displayed at businesses along the Avenue for a weeklong silent auction. Giving us just another reason to love Biketoberfest in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

Same Shit, Same Shirt, Same Band, Same, Same, Same, Yeah they had some new headliners but, it didn’t make the crowds any bigger! Daytona is need of a serious overhaul which is why instead of traveling north to Ponce Inlet we hop off at New Smyrna Beach! This year we had the great pleasure of covering the Florida Harmonica Championships at Beachside Tavern! So Freaking Cool! Underneath crystal clear skies and mild temperatures we listened as harp suckers belted sweet melodies bending & wailing along Florida’s pristine coastline. We spent the entire day in the shade among the locals, bikers, surfers, vacationers and grandma’s who knew better than we about one of the best kept secrets of Biketoberfest!

Pass the Bird! I

never thought I’d find myself writing a column about colon flushes, but with the impending gastrointestinal onslaught we know as Thanksgiving around the corner, I said fuck it. I’ll try to make this as non-yucky as possible, but unfortunately, I am talking about shit and no matter what you say or who you are, it never smells like roses. Almost everyone gets constipated at some time during his or her life, and it’s one of those topics few like to talk about. Occurring when bowel movements become difficult or less frequent, constipation can be both painful and frustrating. Common causes include but are not limited to: inadequate water intake, inadequate fiber in the diet, a disruption of regular diet or routine, consuming large amounts of dairy, stress, medicines, eating disorders, or Neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s & multiple sclerosis. Aside from the obvious things like drinking more water or eating prunes to alleviate your symptoms, massage therapy is an effective tool when dealing with constipation. Commonly referred to as abdominal massage or a colon flush, the treatment is done on the surface of the abdomen and the therapist should NOT BE ANYWHERE NEAR YOUR RECTUM! Not to be confused with colonic irrigation or colon hydrotherapy where tubing is inserted and water is infused into the colon, abdominal massage is much less invasive. Technically, the therapist will massage the intestinal tract manually “moving things along” towards the evacuation destination. It’s a very simple treatment and speaking from experience, yields positive results… usually about 30 minutes to an hour later. So, as you sit down with friends and family this Thanksgiving and consume epic amounts of turkey and stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, mac-n-cheese, corn, apple pie, pumpkin pie, pecan pie, and whatever else is on your menu, be mindful of saying “pass the bird” too many times. “Screaming Eagle Products THAT WORK” Hope all of my south Florida friends enjoyed their annual pilgrimage to Daytona to celebrate 20 years of Biketoberfest. Much like the baseball playoffs, it’s the “fall classic” for riders.

ike any other performance line, Harley-Davidson Screaming Eagle products have their pros and cons depending on our desired result. This month we are focusing on two products that not only land high on the pro list, but actually deliver spectacular, damn near bulletproof results. First up, the Screaming Eagle Hydraulic Cam Chain Tensioner and High Flow Oil Pump Upgrade Kit (Part Number 25284-11). This absolutely fantastic kit replaces the earlier version mechanical chain tensioners and first edition, smaller volume oil pump. Plenty of 1999-2006 Big Twin owners had the misfortune of having their mechanical chain tensioners fail in as little as 25,000 miles, depending on multiple factors. The average failures were occurring closer to 40 or 50 thousand and the very lucky managed much further. The research and development team at Harley-Davidson took all of the information accumulated over that time frame to develop a replacement that far exceeded the performance and maintenance of the original. So much in fact, that once replaced it becomes virtually maintenance free for the rest of the operable lifespan of the engine. The kit includes a very distinct gold colored, surface hardened, anodized billet cam plate made of 6061 aluminum and heat treated to T6 specifications. The 2002-2006 big

twins get a single row front roller chain and sprocket like the stock 96 inchers and the 1999-2001 models keep their silent front chain and sprocket to keep the cam position sensor function operating correctly. The new high volume oil pump increases oil supply by 23% and oil scavenging by 50% over its 1999-2005 OEM counterparts. That significantly drops the operating temperature of the engine overall, but specifically the cam and main bearings to extend their operating life. The combination of the two works so well they are now the stock, factory installed components in the later model big twins. Along with improving components on the cam side, the increased horsepower and torque generated when the 96 cubic inch power plant became standard, drove the engineers at Harley-Davidson to beef up other driveline components as well. One of the components that needed dramatic improvement was the compensator assembly. There was a significant amount of loud knocking noise complaints and failures occurring when these configurations were first rolled out. To combat the steady stream of failures a much stronger assembly was needed. That led to an existing Screaming Eagle upgrade becoming the new standard. Part number 40274-08A, the Screaming Eagle Big Twin Compensator saved the day! Complete with heavier springs and an increased travel, its ability to absorb the jolting energy created when transferring power from the engine to the rear wheel increased by SEVEN TIMES! The assembly is not only the standard now, but the recommended replacement whenever its predecessor fails. If you have an Extended Service Plan, your provider will usually allow your repair facility to use the upgraded part at no additional cost to you. Unfortunately the cam plate does not always get the same treatment. You should however, take advantage of any warranty or service plan repair in the cam compartment and pay the difference to upgrade the part if it isn’t stock in your scoot. You will thank me later. There have been times where the Genuine HarleyDavidson Screaming Eagle Performance parts left a lot to be desired…….this isn’t one of those times. See you next month!

what is a personal injury case? Lawyers say that they do “personal injury cases” or “accident cases” or “wrongful death cases,” and yet my best friend tells me that he does not think that everyone understands exactly what this means. Indeed, people who have known me for years will ask me for a referral to a car/motorcycle accident attorney! They do this even though I think they know exactly what it is I do.

A personal injury, car/motorcycle accident, or wrongful death case is any type of claim in which a person has been injured or killed due to someone else’s carelessness. If the only damage in your case is that your car/motorcycle got banged up, then you don’t have a personal injury case-but you may have a property damage case. We do not handle property damage cases, but there are many lawyers who do. If you and your car/motorcycle have both suffered an injury, then you have a personal injury as well as a property damage claim. In those circumstances, either your insurance company or the other party’s insurance company will usually take care of the property damage claim. If someone’s negligence causes the death of another, then this is called a “wrongful death” claim. The law of each state or jurisdiction differs significantly regarding what can be recovered in a wrongful death case. You need an attorney who understands the specialized wrongful death laws of Florida. Just because you were hurt doesn’t mean you are entitled to money. You must prove that someone else was negligent or careless and that it was that person’s negligence or carelessness that caused your injury. If you fail to do this, you lose. If you sue the wrong person, you lose. If you wait too long to sue, you lose. If you had an injury before the accident, then you are entitled to be compensated only to the extent your injury is now worse.

In Florida, if you were in any way at fault, your percentage of fault is deducted from the jury award-you lose that. This is known as the law of comparative negligence. This means that if the “other guy” was 50 percent at fault and you were 50 percent at fault, then you can recover only half of your damages. In certain instances, such as where you were intoxicated when injured and contributed to causing more than 50 percent of the comparative fault, you can’t recover anything at all. In other instances, other people than the defendant can have percentages of fault attributed to them, and you will not collect that percentage of your damages from the defendant either. Before we accept your case, we must be able to understand clearly what the roles of everyone involved are and who may be apportioned fault, including yourself. A word about the upcoming presidential elections - The main issue for most folks seems to be the economy. Keep in mind that changes made in the economy take longer than a few years to have full effect. Neither party can fix anything within the space of a four year term. I don’t know how to fix it either, but I will take responsibility for my own actions, even when I have caused (or partially caused) my own injury.

In the 70’s my mom had a minor stroke. She recovered just fine. Her memory was iffy for about 6 mos. afterward. When Thanksgiving came around she announced that she couldn’t do all that cooking, but that she would buy the turkey if one of my older sisters would cook it and bring it over. Everyone agreed that would be fine. She went out and bought a 30 lb. frozen Tom Turkey. Then she called my oldest sister and said, “I’ve got the bird. It’s in a pan on the kitchen table defrosting. Come and get it”. The following day, my sister comes over, sees that mom is sound asleep, leaves her a note, and takes the turkey. I get off the bus from school and am approaching our house when I see half the local police dept’s cars in front of our house. I panic and go racing toward the house and am met by three or four cops coming out the door chuckling to themselves. (????????) I ask, “What’s going on? Is my mom ok?” They say, “oh yeah... she’s just fine. Just a little confused is all. She called the station 6 times all in a panic saying someone stole her turkey!!!!” I explain the story to them and they say, “Yeah...we searched the house for her and didn’t see any signs of break in except a note from someone named Patty saying she’s got the bird” !!! They printed this story in the local paper under the crime watch section.!!! For years after that around Thanksgiving, people would call and say. “Hey Marilynn...keep tabs on your turkey this year” !!!!! JasperDale

-Be Careful who you let set the tableThis is more embarrassing for my mother than for me because I wasn’t quite four years old when it happened. My mother taught me to read when I was 3 years old (her first mistake). One day I was in the bathroom and noticed one of the cabinet doors was ajar. I read the box in the cabinet. I then asked my mother why she was keeping napkins in the bathroom. Didn’t they belong in the kitchen? Not wanting to burden me with unnecessary facts she told me that those were for special occasions. Now fast forward a few months. When they returned, the pastor came in first and immediately burst into laughter. Next came his wife who gasped, then began giggling. Next came my father, who roared with laughter. Then came mom, who almost died of embarrassment when she saw each place setting on the table with a “special occasion” napkin at each plate, with the fork carefully arranged on top. I had even tucked the little tails in so they didn’t hang off the edge. Florida Man Prepares For Zombie Apocalypse, Gets Arrested Instead Orlando, Florida - A Florida man has recently been charged with holding up a local medical supply store, and is currently being held by local authorities for psychological testing.The man, 43-year-old Aldus Wimbledon of Tampa, claims he was preparing for the upcoming zombie takeover he says will occur this December. He broke into the medical supply store around midnight on Tuesday. The police were alerted when he tripped the alarm in the store, but when they arrived, the burglar was nowhere to be found. Upon reviewing security tapes, one officer recognized Wimbledon from having been involved in a recent incident with the American Red Cross, in which Wimbledon attempted to steal a Red Cross emergency response vehicle. After the incident with the Red Cross, Wimbledon was released on bond. Now, however, he is being held for further testing, since he continues claiming that he is leading the Orlando area zombie-response team when the takeover occurs in December. When authorities caught up to Wimbledon Wednesday afternoon, they found that he was not only carrying a Zombie Response Team badge, but also wearing a flak jacket and carrying assorted weaponry in his vehicle. Upon obtaining a search warrant for Wimbledon’s apartment, authorities discovered that Wimbledon had actually sectioned off the second bedroom into a panic room of sorts, complete with sea rations, MRE’s, military grade weaponry, industrial gas masks, and other materials that seem to be an integral part of Wimbledon’s zombie defense. A local reporter has obtained information that Wimbledon also maintains an online blog, in which he is attempting to rally a “Zombie response militia” before December. In an excerpt taken from Wimbledon’s blog, he claims, “We must prepare for the zombies! I will lead this resistance but you must stand with me! Prepare yourselves. Gather supplies. You’re gonna need weapons, you’re gonna need food and water and medicine. You can’t expect your government to take care of you on this one, they don’t see it coming and they aren’t prepared. You gotta get ready, because the storm is coming, and the zombies will be on you before you know it, and if you’re not ready, no one can help you.” The post, dated for the day before Wimbledon was arrested for the second robbery charge, appears to be a call to action for what Wimbledon feels is an imminent zombie takeover. After Wimbledon’s psychological evaluation is completed, he will be transferred to a county holding facility until the judge can schedule his first hearing
