THE EDITOR: In a Nutshell Almost there people, almost there! Yip we’re going in to December looking back at 2011, smiling, saying “I’m done with you, 2012 here I come!”. What a year it’s been; a year of mee ng new people, riding our bikes, going places, tough mes, good mes and sad mes. I look back and see missed opportuni es and a mul tude of blessings; you’re s ll alive and GOD s ll loves you. Okay, okay let’s get on with it! Here you have it friends, your Christmas edi on filled with all kinds of goodies. Star ng off with a word on Motorcycle The and how you can avoid becoming a vic m and we highlight a few events to come in 2012. In the news we introduce you to a dealer on the Bluff, celebrate a birthday of another in Umhlanga and a end a crazy event in Amanzimto . The Bike Talk Academy trained its 1000th student since July 2007 and get the opportunity to meet and train a UK actor to ride a motorcycle in his latest movie shot right here on our home turf. John at Gear Up gives us some insight in to the Compe ve edge of riding, plus I show you two brand new products you might want to consider adding to your “From Dad to Dad” shopping list. GOD’s Half Page just got bigger, encouraging you to stand firm when hardship stares you in the face. I con nue by sharing a li le secret with you on tyres and that you might want to love them a tad more than you did in the past; it’s a ma er of life and death. The icing on the cake, it’s obvious, are the reviews where I get to test ride some of the finest motorcycles on the market. In this case a selec on of cruisers, some bigger than others, but a bag of excitement either way. With the newly appointed Victory Motorcycle dealership in Umhlanga Ridge I had the opportunity to ride the Cross Country Tour up to Richards Bay and back and get on the Honda Fury (VT1300CX) a erwards for a ride down chopper-lane. If that wasn’t enough, and with a so spot for the brand, I tested the Yamaha Star Stryker and finished my play me off with a legend such as the Triumph Thunderbird. Heeltyd Speeltyd, ek sê! To add to all the excitement, we are in the process of publishing our first edi on of Bike Talk for Gauteng which should be out in the next month or so. Further to this we’ve launched our own On-line Shop selling a selec on of Bike Talk merchandise and offering you a series of Bike Talk events in 2012. This will include Breakfast Runs, Track Days, Rider Skills Fes val and Endure Runs, so make your way to www.biketalk.co.za and check it out. That’s it “In a Nutshell”, for a more complete picture go ahead and turn the page. May you enjoy a fantas c Christmas with your friends and family, look a er yourself and GOD bless!

KEEPING IT UP: Motorcycle TheŌ are no suspicious individuals lurking about. If parking in a garage, block your bike with automobiles, close the garage door and make sure it is locked. Don’t store your registra on papers in your bike’s storage compartment, tank bag or saddlebag. The safest place for this is at home. Uniquely mark and then photograph your bike. If thieves take your bike, note its unique markings to law enforcement using the photos you have taken. Keep your bike registra on and insurance details on you when you ride. Be careful about giving out private informa on on where you live, work or play. If you use a trailer to transport your motorcycle, follow these safety ps. Park the trailer in a well-lit loca on near security cameras or in an area easily seen by restaurant, hotel or event staff. Lock the trailer doors and hitch. Secure doors by backing up to a wall, so there is not enough room for doors to be opened. Know your trailer iden fica on and license plate registra on numbers. A friend of mine’s bike was stolen a li le while ago and at first you might think how do you steal a bike and get away with it. Well, where there’s a will there’s a way and these things happen. Believe me, the feeling is the same, car or bike when you come to where you parked it and it’s gone you get that sick feeling in your stomach, then a dizzy feeling in your head and then the anger steps in. Confusion and doubt is followed by a huge head-ache and more anger steps in. Some people actually cry... because it might their ONLY MODE OF TRANSPORT YOU HEARTLESS THIEF! Oh, there’s the anger again... Following are a few basic but helpful becoming a vic m of motorcycle the .

ps to avoid

Lock your igni on and remove the key. Most bike the s occur when the igni on is shut off, but not locked. Lock the forks or disk brakes with locks that have large, brightly coloured tags. If traveling with other riders, lock motorcycles together when not in use. If riding alone, lock your bike to a secure, sta onary object that can’t be easily dismantled, such as a light pole. Add an audible alarm to your motorcycle. When traveling and spending the night at a hotel, locate an outdoor security camera and park your bike in the camera’s view. If this is not possible, park your bike close to your room. Keep an eye on your bike. When parking at a public event, check your motorcycle periodically, especially immediately a er leaving your bike, to make sure there

When riding home, make sure you’re not being followed. When selling your bike, the use of fake iden es has become common in bike the s. Don’t turn over the Log Book or Registra on Papers un l you can verify that payment has cleared the bank. Ask the buyer for his or her name, address (copy of a Metro Bill or Telkom Account), date of birth (copy of ID) and driver’s license number. Be especially cau ous of anyone who presents out-ofcountry iden fica on. Make sure the poten al buyer wasn’t dropped off by another party and is planning to take a one-way test ride with your bike. Verify that the buyer owns the vehicle he or she arrived with, and that the vehicle is of equal or greater value than your bike. Check that the buyer’s driver’s license is valid if you can. It isn’t necessary that you provide a buyer with the Log Book right away. A wri en document signed by the seller and buyer indica ng price and method of payment can serve as proof of purchase. You can forward the Log Book to the buyer once the money is in the bank. If you decide to sell your motorcycle on consignment (S.O.B. – Sell On Behalf), do not provide the Log Book to the dealership un l you have received your money in full. Make sure the dealership is a reputable business before you trust them as an agent. When it does happen to you or a friend, circulate details with a photo very quickly before you bother to go to the authori es. Your network of fellow bikers are much bigger than anything else plus they carry your feelings close at heart.

DARE DEVIL MOTORCYCLES I took a ride, one sunny day, on my hunt for the un-explored dealerships of KZN and paid a visit to these guys. I must say that there is s ll hope; a er cha ng to Allan (above Right) and seeing the passion he has for his products, the service they provide and their customers, I knew we have another success story on our hands right here at 216 Marine Drive, Bluff - Durban.

Allan and his team offer their community a huge selec on of products by Jonway, Bajaj, GoMoto, Jordan along with a selec on of Helmets, Accessories and other gear to go with your bike. Catering for both young and old, you can be sure you’ll get the best service from the Sales Floor to a er-sales Service and Repairs this side of Durban.

FEVER ENDURO-X At the recently held Fever Enduro-Cross motorcycle event in Amanzimto , a KZN first; people flocked to see riders compete on one of the most sickening courses that I’ve seen, separa ng the men from the boys. Maybe I should get out more and a end off-road events, but this was mind-blowing, I mean, to see these guys climb obstacles, crash and hurt themselves. Why do this to yourself? A friend of mine told me; “This is what I live for, I want to taste the blood in my mouth.” What? Crazy! Are

ya nuts? There were some really difficult stuff to ride over; tyres, tree stumps, cable reels, wooden poles and whatnot. Not for me thanks, the third me a fall like that I’ll set my bike and kit on fire and call my mother. Anyway, the event was well a ended and a huge hit, so much so that the next one is planned for Ballito and again down this side later next year. These guys are truly skilled and nuts, I cannot wait for the next one, it’s going to be HUGE!

1000th STUDENT Since we started teaching people how to ride motorcycles in July 2007, we’ve had the privilege in mee ng some very interes ng and beau ful people from all walks of life. Pieter van Loggerenberg (above Le ) was one of them. On 7 October 2011 Pieter came to us with the same high expecta ons and sense of uncertainty as every other beginner we’ve trained during this period. Seen here with me is Pieter with a gi from us just to say thank you and looking forward to the next 1000 people I’ll meet over the next few years, GOD willing. GOD’s grace, hard work and great people will get us there. MOVIE STAR TRAINED Yes, I get to meet and train a celebrity from me to me, and Harry Treadaway was no different. I had to get him to ride a BMW R1200GS in a week (15 hours), star ng him off on a 600, then a 800 and eventually a 1200 which he will be riding in his latest movie “The Flight of the Stalks”. He was a star student and very sharp, hard on himself and very anxious to do things perfect. On the last day I assessed him, performing a series of non-stop exercises, finishing well above his director’s expecta ons. Harry is a well-known actor from the UK; his professional debut was Brothers of the Head, a feature film about conjoined twin brothers in a punk rock band. Harry played

9

Tom Howe, the band’s rhythm guitarist and songwriter, and his brother Luke played Barry Howe, the lead singer. During rehearsals and throughout the shoot, Harry and Luke were connected to each other for fi een hours a day, wearing sewn-together wetsuits or a harness. They performed all tracks featured in the film themselves live on stage, as well as recording nine tracks for the sound-track album. Harry took on other professional commitments while s ll at drama school. Since gradua ng, he has taken on work such as Recovery for Tiger Aspect and as Mark Brogan on the Channel 4 series Cape Wrath. In Control Harry plays Joy Division drummer Stephen Morris. In 2008 he appears in the Channel 4 drama The Shoo ng of Thomas Hurndall. He has acted in horror film The Disappeared and science fic on-fantasy film City of Ember (available in SA). Harry is also credited as a song-writer, a er wri ng the piece Sink or Swim which he and Luke performed both on film and on the soundtrack of Brothers of the Head. Also he performed his song “Raise This Up” in “Brothers of the Head” as a solo performance during the scene in which Tom Howe’s girlfriend breaks his heart. His most recent film was The Last Furlong in Ireland where he is starring as the tle character James Furlong. It’s been my honour to have met and trained this young man! Here’s to wishing him all the best with his ac ng career and hoping he will con nue riding once back in the UK.

PERRY YAMAHA TURNS 25 Hey, Happy Birthday! I can only say “Well-done to Vernon, his family and his team for s cking it out, se ng the pace and adding to our lives through your product.” I s ll remember the first me I walked into his old shop on Umgeni Road wan ng to buy a bike, looking at the R1 and s cking my nose in the air, saying “No way am I buying a bike where you have to sit like a chicken on a s ck.” This was 2004, look where we’re at today. Since then I’ve had 6 bikes bought from Henry (below Le ) and yes, one of them was a R1 and I’ve never looked back. January 2006 was the start of Bike Talk Magazine and Vernon (below Right facing), was the first dealer to enter into adver sing with us and has never skipped an issue. Sure, there were some tough mes and more ahead for some dealers, but Perry Yamaha is s ll here a er 25 years. Awesome Stuff! I call this boldness, stamina, courage and passion; this is the muscle to the bone that makes you walk and stand tall above the rest.

As for the Birthday Bash held recently; Wow, what a turnout! Vernon and Henry told me they were pumping from early morning, gear and accessories going at cost, free boeries and the Dyno around the back with bikes figh ng it out to prove which is best. From humble beginnings to a beau ful dealership, host to a vast range of motorcycles (road and off-road), quads, jet-ski’s, golf carts, gear and accessories, generators, side-by-sides, pre-owned bikes and now Perry Cars with Mark at the helm. Henry takes customers on regular breakfast-runs and track days, with Vernon se ng up trips to Lesotho ever so o en. This is living a dream and you can be a part of it, just take some me, pop in and have a coffee with Vernon, Henry or Mark and see the excitement in their eyes when they tell you about their products, be er s ll; when you invest in one. A perfect mix: People, Product and Dealer.

GEARING UP: CompeƟƟon! the Country Trax team honestly believe we can make a huge difference to the dirt bike rider with Roger Scheffer as their instructor and for the dual purpose guys to hook up with Rynardt Crous and / or myself.

WriƩen by John Briscoe It would appear that whatever we do involves some form of compe on – hell man it even started before we were born with all those sperm compe ng for the ovum in the womb! Yip and very few won that race! Definitely a case of winner takes all!

We urge you to look at the respec ve websites and in honing your skills be able to compete safely and in a most enjoyable manner!

But what has compe on to do with motorcycle riding? Well I guess it’s everything! Just think about it! We turn our a en on immediately to our own steeds let alone Motor GP, Super stock, Trials you name it, we have serious compe on. Compe on can be in any form - comfort, finish, looks, technical difficulty and of course speed! So what? Compe on is good so say the guru’s! Well is it?

As a last thought perhaps take this Christmas break to restore those spent ba eries, work out a really great plan of a ack (Well done Sam!) and then get ready to improve your skills and enjoy having the success you should. Ul mately this bit by bit process will lead you to become the great person you could be and an even be er biker! Merry Christmas and make 2012 a year to be proud of!

Is it good that we take a brand new biker and set him up in a breakfast run so that he is ‘looked a er’ but meanwhile the guy or chick is way out of their depth? But because of the compe ve juices in us there is no way we back off! The outcome is usually lots of talking and shaking (out of fear) on the other side but occasionally we lose some of our friends not necessarily permanently but on many occasions just because they didn’t enjoy the experience. They end up just not coming back. In much the same way the Moto cross fraternity push their mates too soon and too quickly with results that take far longer to achieve. And speaking of being crazy the Enduro guys really couldn’t bother too much how many mes you fall while trying a par cularly steep slope with ruts, rocks and 3 high step ups – a er all you’re ‘young, rugged and strong’ so you can handle these things! Well even on the rides we offer at Gear Up, I occasionally see the look of fear in people’s eyes as they debate with themselves as to whether they should face the leg pulling of their mates or the embarrassment of not a emp ng a par cular sec on or obstacle! Where does all this end? Well compe on is here to stay! Whether we like it or not, it’s just part of our lives. How do we handle this? In a group very few leaders will eliminate the compe ve element as it can be extremely useful in ge ng things done – so hey if you’re in a group understand the rules and make your choices accordingly! As an individual, I believe you have one huge tool to improve your compe ve edge no ma er the level you’re at and that is TRAINING – appropriate training! How many riders blindly believe their skills are up to standard and yet we s ll lose our colleagues to crazy mistakes! Just by going through a 2 hour briefing may well make the difference between having a bruised ego and not being around at all! Here in KZN, Hein, through his Bike Talk Academy offers some superb on road training courses whilst myself and

REVIEW: Victory Cross Country everything in between. The Cross Country Tour’s riding posi on is more cruiser-like than the Gold Wing’s or BMW K1600GTL’s but much more open than the Harley’s. Victory drops another trump on the table with engine sophis ca on. The 106-cubic-inch, air-cooled, 50-degree V-Twin is quieter than the 103-inch Harley motor, and just as smooth to the rider despite being solidly bolted to the Cross Country Tour’s frame. So er off the bo om than the Harley, the Cross Country Tour’s power plant has a pleasant midrange surge, a smooth six-speed gearbox, and just enough mechanical presence to be interes ng, not intrusive. Victory claims 92 HP and 148 Nm of torque. Despite tall gearing—you’ll really want fi h gear for passing—but in its defence, that new fairing set was pushing a lot of frontal area through the atmosphere. When you take a gamble on unusual styling, you also risk obscuring a machine’s goodness with its presenta on. Entered into evidence is the Victory Vision Tour, a fine motorcycle with a polarizing appearance. Are there touring riders who never gave it a chance because of its over-thetop bodywork? Almost certainly.

Maintaining a 660mm seat height came from the seat’s shape and loca on on the chassis, not from elimina ng suspension travel—the right choice for a touring machine. The Cross Country Tour’s inverted fork and single, airadjustable rear shock choked small bumps yet kept the he y chassis solid during travel. Cornering clearance was ample, and the Cross Country Tour seemed perfectly contented leaned over. For 2012, ABS is standard on the touring models, and is of the unlinked variety; the Vision Tour has linked brakes. The Cross Country Tour’s brakes are powerful enough for any situa on, even if the front doesn’t provide a lot of feedback. Victory says that it has chosen a new sensor mechanism with more teeth than usual, which provides be er ABS resolu on and quicker response.

Having learned from that exercise, Victory put the Cross Country into the line-up. It’s a more conven onal big American touring ride, which Victory officials expect will become the brand’s top-selling touring bike in, oh, about the next five minutes. This I learned very quickly when I took this beaut on a trip to Richards Bay and back, the boxes loaded with magazines. To make long days on the seat enjoyable, Victory’s engineers fi ed the Tour with a combina on of off-theshelf accessories op onal on the base Cross Country along with some new features. That pointy tail box combines with the removable, outward-opening panniers to provide some awesome capacity. You know how you some mes have to think hard about what to take on tour? Forget it. If you think you’ll need it, pack it; the Cross Country Tour will probably have the room.

As superb as the new Cross Country Tour proves on the open road, there are items on the wish list. Just like with any bike, you’d like to add things because we’re never sa sfied with what the factory has done, we want to personalise our own ride. So, that said, Victory offers a vast range of op onal accessories which won’t necessarily rip your arm off or make you take a second bond on your house. These include op onal wind protec on, seats and backrests, chrome, handlebars and mirrors, grips and pegs, electronics, exhausts and performance parts.

New for the Cross Country Tour are plas c lowers hugging a tubular crash bar in place of the Cross Country’s stylish open cas ngs. Not only do you get generously sized storage compartments—the le with an iPod/iPhone connec on to the integrated audio system plus a 12-volt outlet—but added a very clever air-management system.

The compe on is u erly overshadowed by the Cross Country Tour’s on-the-road abili es, handsome styling and good value. Consider: Victory men oned that the company’s sales in the touring and cruiser categories are running 24 % ahead of the industry.

Superior protec on doesn’t mean much if you’re squirming on the seat before the first fuel stop. Here, Victory absolutely nailed it. The chrome ller-style bar places the grips further forward than you’d find on an Electra Glide, and the smooth seat offers more than one locked-down posi on for your cheeks. The smooth seat seems a li le so at first, but proved to be all-day comfortable. What’s more, the floorboards are crazy long, giving you the op on of the full-cruiser slouch or almost dead upright, plus

The bike also features a 950W generator which means you’ll be able to mount a Xmas tree complete with a flashing Rudolf without overloading the system. Apparently, the op onal extras are going to include; a centre stand, hard or so luggage, high and low seat op ons and heated grips. It would be good if spoked wheels were added to that list. It’ll be interes ng to see how the Triumph competes in a few areas where the GS rules. For example, I’ve yet to ride a Triumph where the screen does anything other than create a vortex of hurricane propor ons whereas the protec on on a GS is good enough to have a pick nick on the tank, at 120km/h. Will the standard suspension cope with two up, fully loaded long distance travel? And, will the centre of gravity be low enough so that you can pick the bike up (when dropped) and provide some reassuring stability if taken off road?

REVIEW: Yamaha 1300 Stryker squish area forces the fuel and air mixture toward the centre of the combus on chamber for more complete combus on and, in the end, improved power and cleaner emissions. The new exhaust system, designed specifically for the Stryker, also adds to the awesome look of the bike while op mizing its engine performance. Incidentally, the V-Star 1300 is revised for 2011 with a new black frame, extra chrome, and a new handlebar and seat. The rest of Star’s line-up remains mostly unchanged. But while the V-Star is tastefully styled, the Stryker screams for a en on, its carefree style plays bad boy to the V-Star’s nice guy. In the custom cruiser segment, detail touches can make or break a bike, and the Stryker is successful on many accounts. It has likeable touches like the shorty ducktail front fender (made of steel, not plas c), thin-spoke wheels, and a small round headlight that looks retro with its chrome housing but has a modern mul -reflector lens.

The Yamaha Stryker is the epitome of a cool cruiser that comes with some serious performance capabili es. We’ll touch on the la er in a li le bit, but for now, the name of the game is the Stryker’s overall design, which, in a word, is downright sexy.

There are also real steel fenders that can be easily customized, covering the wide 210-series rear tyre and chopper-inspired 21-inch front wheel that reinforces the muscular styling of the bike. Merging with the narrow point of the saddle is a 18 litre fuel tank while added accessories, including custom seats, quick-release windscreens and luggage to billet wheels and backrests, all point to a package that’s just as imposing as it is powerful.

The Stryker’s most dis nc ve a ribute is its raised steering head proudly and clearly on display in front of the fuel tank raised skyward. “The muscular, forward-lunging look reinterprets classic custom ‘chopper’ styling for the 21st century,” according to Yamaha-Star. Con nuing the chopper theme is a front end kicked out at a radical 40 degrees thanks to a 6-degree triple-clamp offset. Unlike Star’s Raider, which has a similar profile but isn’t as lean, the Stryker’s double-cradle frame is made from steel rather than aluminium. Its seat has the now-customary low height that showroom riders love, aiding sales conversions. Foot controls are placed rela vely close to the rider, and the tubular handlebar connects directly to the upper triple clamp for a clean appearance.

The Yamaha Stryker delivers the kind of handling that’s just unmatched in this mid-size custom cruiser segment. The muscular steering head on this double-cradle steel frame helps give the bike its lean, lightweight image. The 6° yoke and raked triple clamps combine to provide a total of 40° of fork rake, achieving the aggressive raked out styling image and solid straight-line performance that’s tried-and-true for Yamaha. It also provides nimble handling characteris cs, even at low speeds.

At the heart of the Stryker is the same fuel-injected and liquid-cooled V-Twin seen in the V-Star 1300. Displacing 1304cc and boas ng four valves per cylinder, the 60degree V-twin murmurs through a swoopy new shotgun exhaust system. The Stryker pumps out impressive power and torque numbers for excellent cruising performance. Other high-tech engine features include single overhead cams actua ng roller rockers, ceramic coated cylinders and forged connec ng rods.

Though it’s an unlikely me for a custom-style chopper to hit the market, Star’s Stryker is a well-priced and a rac vely finished bike that makes it more appealing to mainstream riders. Its ergonomics are not quite as extreme as the Honda Fury’s, thanks to the easier reach of its handlebars and its more cruiser-like posture, but the Stryker projects a riding style and road presence that’s dis nct. Impressively, both bikes achieve unexpectedly high levels of func onality for a genre that’s known for imprac cality. Ul mately, these types of motorcycles exist mostly for their style, so the choice boils down to a ma er of taste and price.

The engine also features a 36mm intake and 32mm exhaust valves with special single coil springs for great power and torque with valves angled at 20 degrees from the centre. Specially designed roller rockers ac vate the valves, allowing a greater amount of valve li without causing excessive camsha wear and fric on. The camsha s have also been specially designed for use with roller rockers with a pent roof combus on chamber design and op mized

REVIEW: Honda VT 1300CX Comfort isn’t too bad despite the very low seat, so you could even go places on this bike - although it would have to be solo, because the backwards-sloping rear seat probably contravenes human rights legisla on. So why can’t you make up my mind and buy one? Is it because choppers exist outside the realm of motorcycles? They populate a place where form precedes func on to a degree I find absurd, where the aim is a par cular visual signature, which can be pleasing, but which is so dated it’s nearing its 50th birthday. Yet Honda has created a viable produc on motorcycle around this idea, and it’s the first big manufacturer to do so, which has to be applauded. I even managed to spend a day in the saddle, hi ng freeway, bi-way and city traffic - so it’s a genuinely useful machine. The Fury handles be er than any chopper I’ve ridden, with the most neutral steering and best high speed stability, and is superior to many much less radical factory cruisers in these respects.

It didn’t take me a long me to decide what I thought of Honda’s new Fury or VT1300CX as we call it in SA. In fact I loved it the moment I pulled off at the dealership.

The suspension is good but ground clearance low by most standards. The brakes work perfectly well enough and it even has sha drive, keeping the back end clean aesthe cally and physically, poin ng form and func on the same way. I have no ced that many of the components which look like - and indeed ought to be - steel, iron or chrome are made of plas c. Real choppers are hewn from honest metal. Plas c won’t rust; it’s lighter, cheaper and strong enough.

The VT1300CX is a full-on chopper, the sort of thing you might see rolling out of the workshop of the Teutuls of Orange County Choppers - except the mass-produced Honda is far be er made. For the unini ated, “chopper” is a deriva ve term for a bike with a long wheelbase, extra-long forks, high bars and low seat. Think of the bikes ridden by Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper in Easy Rider.

Where there is metal, it’s some mes joined in an unsightly fashion, such as some of the tube welding on the frame beneath the tank because of state-of-the-art automated welding machines. Looking at it objec vely, the Fury is pleasing, even beau ful, and no other manufacturer has made anything as radical. It’s also easy to ride and likely to be very reliable and durable. The price is a li le steep against more substan al cruisers, but if you look at the Fury with your heart, nothing else will do as there’s nothing else like it. It’s a job very well done.

The fact that the Fury comes from the most conserva ve and mainstream of the Japanese factories makes it arguably the most radical Honda motorcycle we’ve seen for years. Stylis cally it’s a bona fide chopper, with an absurdly raked-out fork angle, high controls and display, space above the engine big enough to poke your head through, and a beau fully sculpted fuel tank that’s both delicate and elegant, apart from being rather small at 12.8 litres. The front mudguard hugs the tyre ghtly, the nine-spoke wheels look great, and a lot of a en on has been paid to achieving an unclu ered appearance that many one-off custom builders fail to achieve.

Accessories are plen ful and well worth the spend if you really want to pimp this ride and make it as unique as your own personality.

Nowhere does it clearly state the model of the bike, perhaps in an a empt to fool bystanders into thinking the Fury really is a one-off. But when you buy a bike from a Honda showroom you expect it to work and ride like a normal motorcycle. It does. There aren’t even any steering quirks despite the absurdly long forks common to the category, although low-speed manoeuvring can be demanding. It doesn’t even flop down into corners like the laws of physics say it should, and most riders will find it perfectly easy to master. You could even call it ordinary, especially as the 1,312cc engine is muted and smooth, with li le of the character of a big V-twin. Unlike most choppers, you could use it every day. Even the small tank isn’t a great problem.

Who’d have thought Honda would make such a bike? You get the unlikely combina on of genuine chopper styling with some of the highest reliability and build quality standards money can buy. What’s your excuse? Priced at R133 999.00 - Incl. 14% VAT

REVIEW: Triumph Thunderbird With Triumph’s accessory pipes the 1597cc Thunderbird parallel twin engine runs at a low 865 rpm idle speed. Max power is 85bhp at 4850 rpm, and a mighty 146Nm of torque at 2750 rpm. Twis ng the thro le the big parallel twin roars to life immediately. Shi ing up, you feel the torque surge straight away, which is the norm on a large bore machine such as the 2011 Thunderbird. Helical cut gears make for smooth upshi s, very smooth in fact and for those of you that know your Triumphs, I can tell you that this is a very big improvement. Sixth gear works as overdrive, but, with the torque maxing at a low 2750 rpm, you can ride in sixth at very low speeds too. The fuel injec on is sublime and this is an area where Triumph has worked really hard. Triumph chose belt drive for the first me since the mid-1920s on the 2011 Triumph Thunderbird. Triumph has got that very sought a er thing called “heritage”. Without heritage you’re nothing in the highly emo onal cruiser market. Without heritage you’re le only with a good product and price compe veness that simply isn’t enough to go to war with. The 2011 Thunderbird places itself exactly in the market where some of its rivals rule. The Triumph Thunderbird closes the gap between 800cc and 2300cc with this 1600cc parallel twin powertrain.

The a ermarket silencers that release a li le more thunder are an essen al upgrade giving that all important extra bonding between man and machine. Cruising in sixth on the freeway also proved a delight, as all you need to do to overtake is to wake up the big motor with the thro le and pass. The engine works in a very smooth and calm way in overdrive whilst the beast is only a twist on the thro le away. For more sporty riding in twisty sec ons the Thunderbird impressed me and only the lack of ground clearance stops you being faster. The foot-pegs scraped in pre y much every corner but the solid chassis and suspension allows for full confidence.

The 2011 Triumph Thunderbird is a stripped down cruiser that can be taken to the exact same places as the extensive H-D So ail range. Triumph has in fact already launched more than 100 accessories that enable a lot of changes from day one. The range includes everything from sport to touring accessories.

Tim Pren ce, the designer has been responsible for cruisers such as Triumph’s own Rocket III Touring, Honda’s VTX and Rune. He states: “Aside from the engine, the form is straigh orward cruiser. For styling inspira on, I looked towards the 1960s muscle car, we wanted the bike to be comfortably recognizable to the cruiser market. The forms themselves are simple and honest, and are meant to work well with the mechanical nature of the bike.”

A big old tapered leather seat is my first point of contact on the 2011 Thunderbird. The seat is at a low 700mm in height and it’s instantly comfortable. The low seat height enables the forward mounted foot pegs to give a comfortable cruising posi on. I start my day on a slightly customized Thunderbird fi ed with ABS brakes, pipes, mirrors and head-light cowl just messing around to get a feel for the bike and striking up a rela onship. The front brake setup is a double 310mm disc with Nissin 4-pot calipers, and a single 310mm disc at the rear with a 2-pot Brembo caliper.

All in all Triumph has done a brilliant job crea ng its first proper cruiser. I love the big 1600cc parallel twin and despite this being a different engine, it doesn’t feel very different. The Thunderbird is the basic new Triumph cruiser and rather than going for a flashy finish Triumph has opted for conserva ve paint op ons. All that’s le now is for customers to start customizing themselves and for that purpose the Thunderbird is perfect. Triumph has enough heritage, the way I see it, to stare the rivals straight in the face and showcase its true poten al.

The ABS brakes work exactly like you want ABS brakes to work and the ul mate stopping power is very strong. Let’s not forget that the Thunderbird weighs 339kg ready to ride, so the stopping power is impressive. I rode only in the dry, so I didn’t find much personal use for the ABS system. On heavy cruisers with ample rubber touching the surface at all mes, I find hard braking easy and safe also without ABS. The front brake set-up over the 47mm Showa fork felt very good, and the suspension at the back is a chromed double shock affair from Showa. The 2011 Thunderbird is definitely on the comfortable side, but the suspension easily handled also the sporty riding that I did. I’ve spent the last part of the day pushing the limits a li le and yes, the Thunderbird handles very well.

GOD’S CORNER: This thing is for me “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9 NIV). One Sunday, in 1987, a dear woman was wai ng for service to conclude and looking forward to an a ernoon when the en re family would enjoy a rare day together. As the final song was beginning to flow from the congrega on, she knew something was wrong. Pushing past the other family members, she made it as far as the outside steps. It was Tuesday when she awoke and found herself in the hospital surrounded by her family and physician. A visit to a neurologist was suggested. The neurologist found an aneurysm in the major artery of the brain. No symptoms: no headaches, no blurred vision, no motor problems-never been in be er health. S ll young in years, s ll ea ng correctly, s ll exercisingyet within a touch of death. She had two choices: 1) live with the knowledge of the aneurysm and hope for the best; or 2) have brain surgery.

How does someone handle news like this? How would you handle it? How did our friend handle it? Where is God at a me like this? The tears came first, then the resolve to stay busy. So she went back to work and did not tell anyone about it. She discussed it only with family and a trusted physician. Her decision-surgery. She began to review life and wonder why, and at the same me, be thankful for what God had already provided. Then the panic a ack came. Would the surgery leave her paralyzed, blind, or even dead? All were possible. There were long talks with her husband far into the night-there was inability to sleep-it was real-it was happening and it was happening to her! On one of those sleepless nights she walked downstairs, picked up her Bible, looked at a red ribbon imprinted with suggested topics: sorrow, worry, loneliness, courage and picked courage. The passage was Joshua 1:9, and the words jumped out at her: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord Your God will be with you wherever you go.” Tearing a piece of paper from a note pad, she copied the verse and clasped it in her hand. The sense of panic then drained away. The piece of paper remained with her during the days leading up to the day of the surgery. Surgery day found her with no fear of the surgery or the future. The piece of paper remained in her right hand as she was moved into the opera ng room. The final exam by the a ending nurses revealed the paper. The piece of paper with the verse had served its purpose. She told the nurse to throw it away. But in her beau ful wisdom, the nurse responded, “I have to take it now; but when you wake up, you will find it taped to your palm.” Twenty-six hours later two smiling nurses appeared. “Did you find your verse?” Slowly she opened her fist. The ta ered scrap was secured with surgical tape. Reading it would not be possible for a long me, but the words are etched forever in her memory: “...for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” If you are at a place like this in your life, remember this: If GOD can bring you to it, HE will get you through it. Whatever you are facing right now say these five words and trust GOD with the rest. “This thing is for me!” I trust you LORD! Only He can give us the courage to face life and death. May we be moved to call upon His power and promises daily. May GOD bless you as you turn to Him right now.

TECH TALK: Tyres have feelings too New or used, before you stress your tyres in the twis es you MUST allow them to get warm first. Trac on available on a cold tyre is significantly less than for a warm one. Similarly, if you are doing a lot of twis es and your tyres get HOT, trac on is diminished. Maximum trac on exists only under normal opera ng temperatures. Tyre Pressure For longest tyre life it is my recommenda on that you strive to keep them at the higher limit of their recommended pressures (regardless of what your motorcycle owner’s manual might say to the contrary.) Further to this, pressure should be determined while the tyres are cold - meaning, have not been used for a couple of hours. Outside temperatures affect your tyre pressure far more profoundly, however. As temperature goes, so does pressure. There is nothing wrong with your tyre if it behaves like this, of course. What is being illustrated here is that you MUST check your tyre pressure on a regular basis (about once a week is reasonable) and to be par cularly aware of it on cold days.

New Tyres Once again I heard well inten oned experienced riders only par ally explain to some newbies that they needed to be careful a er pu ng new tyres on their bikes. They were told that this was because the new tyres do not have as much trac on on them un l they are scuffed up a li le.

Tyre Wear Excessive tyre wear, and/or cupping, is a problem that most motorcyclists experience over me. Too o en this is simply the result of failing to maintain proper tyre pressure. However, this is far from a complete answer.

It is not that I dispute that fact - new tyres do provide less trac on un l the new-tyre coa ng is worn off of them. But that is not the whole story and if no more is said about them an inexperienced rider could do something very foolish and dangerous if they rely simply on that informa on.

Cupping is a phenomenon that is absolutely normal! There are at least seven causes of cupping and/or uneven wear in the front tyre other than tyre air pressure: • Most roads are banked away from the centre. Thus, if you ride ver cal, the side of your tyre closest to the centre of the road wears more. • Your tyres 'scuff ' when you force a speed change with them. The rear tyre scuffs when you accelerate and when you brake (and every me you ride in a direc on other than straight ahead.) Thus, it tends to have even 'cupping' as compared to the front tyre (which scuffs when you brake but not when you accelerate.) • While alignment is not usually a problem with motorcycles - it can be. • Carrying an unevenly divided load (all your tools, jumper cable, etc.) in one saddlebag or pannier can result in your riding the bike other than ver cal most of the me. • If one of your front shocks is defec ve you will experience uneven tyre wear. • Excessive use of the front brake will result in excessive cupping.

They could, for example, scuff the new tyres using an abrasive just a er moun ng them and then take off to tackle some twis es. Lower trac on would not, then, be a significant problem. But that is a far cry from saying that the new tyres would be safely usable in stress situa ons as a result. ALL new tyres grow during the first 100 kilometres or so of use. It is absolutely essen al that you allow them to do so before pu ng them to a stress test such as a emp ng to aggressively navigate a set of twis es. Why? Because it is the process of growing that results in a ght and secure bead to rim sea ng. If you put the tyres to undue stress before their beads have seated to the wheel rims there is a possibility that you will experience a catastrophic loss of air while heeled over in a turn. Rather than using an abrasive to convert a new tyre into a used one, be er by far to ride on them for a 100 kilometres or so. Besides, it’s more fun doing it that way.
