THE EDITOR Well, boys and girls, there you have it; another issue jam packed with the latest on the market from adver sers and a collec on of informa ve ar cles. It’s been hec c between the Academy and the Mag but your support and an cipa on for the mag makes it worth while and I want to thank you for that. Let me brief you on what to expect in this issue: first of all welcome to the Ear Ins tute as a brand new adver ser and sponsor of Bike Talk. From cover to cover I take you from Roger’s trip to Zambia, to the launch of the Super Tenere at Perry’s and the first of its kind Burn-Out on the Beach hosted by CMA Amanzimto . Once again I share with you the importance of “Dangerous Emo ons” while riding and bring a selec on of the latest events with the What’s on Calendar. John from Gear Up gives some insight on Adventure Jackets to compliment our Reviews on the three Adventure Bikes. I then bring you two new items I’ve seen lately like the Mitas Tyres and “Rear View” helmet. Then my friends it is me to stop and take “Time to Think” as life rushes past us and we spend too li le me taking in the things that ma er the most in life. Later in the mag you’ll see a few things I couldn’t overlook at the recent Chicken Rally which leaves you anxious for the next one. On the Technical side I had the opportunity to test the new Moto Ear Hearing Protec on and man did that open my “ears” so to speak. You think about dressing up for the fall but never for the deafening sound of helmet noise. I also share some thoughts on the Xkulcha Dakar pants for Adventure Riders. On the review side I’ve been on the new Honda VFR1200, what a ride and then the main feature of this issue, the writeups on the three Adventure Bikes; BMW R1200GS, KTM 990 Adventure and the all new Yamaha XT1200Z Super Tenere. This kept me busy and I need to add, provided me with the me of my life. Riding adventure bikes doesn’t make you grow old but rather grow up in the sense that me spent on the bike adds more value to your ride rather than the risk element of an accident on the road. Running out of space and breath I’ll close in saying thank you for your support, reader and adver ser, it is heart warming to live in this province and among people such a yourself. KEEPING IT UP: Dangerous Emotions You are riding on a busy four-lane road heading for an appointment. Suddenly a car swerves immediately in front of you into your lane. You have to brake hard to avoid running into it. The car then speeds off and quickly changes to the le lane. You think, “What a fool!” You feel your anger rising. OR It’s late at night and you are riding in an unfamiliar neighbourhood. A vehicle comes speeding up behind you and sits right on your tail. The driver starts flashing the headlights back and forth from high to low beam. What should you do? Riding can be a frustra ng experience at mes. How can you control your anger while riding? Emo ons are powerful forces that can interfere with the concentra on you need for riding. When you are feeling angry, anxious or sad, you become less alert. Your thinking becomes unclear. Your safety and the safety of others is in danger. At mes you may become angry or impa ent because of something in the riding environment. Crowded traffic condi ons and high-speed freeway riding o en cause stress. Being slowed by other traffic when you’re in a hurry produces tension. Riders who are tense or stressed are less tolerant of the mistakes of other riders and road users. It is o en difficult to know what to do when faced with road users who are aggressive. Their lack of courtesy and bad driving habits can lead to crashes. Although extreme aggression, or road rage, is not common, mild aggression can escalate if you are not careful. Whatever the cause of your upset, it is important to look at your emo onal fitness to ride. Some mes it’s best to stay off your bike. Strategies for Controlling EmoƟons Here are some things you can do to help you stay calm and in control while riding: • Keep learning. Analyze previous stressful riding situa ons you have experienced and figure out what you can do next me to be calmer and safer. • Plan ahead. Increase your chances of staying calm by choosing a route that avoids crowded traffic condi ons. • Allow yourself plenty of me. Being in a hurry can cause you to become angry or frustrated. Realize that if you leave late, you’ll arrive late. • Think of your own safety and the safety of others. This can help you calm down and focus. • As a rider you are vulnerable. Never return aggression — avoid eye contact and don’t gesture back. Keep away from erra c road users. • If you’re in a situa on in which you feel threatened, get help. Ride to a loca on where there are plenty of people (e.g., a shopping mall or police sta on). • Do not go home if you are being followed. • If you can’t keep it under control; stay home, someone is going to get hurt.

IN THE NEWS At an event hosted by BMW Umhlanga Motorrad on 4 June 2010, we said fare-well to Roger Scheffer leading a team up to North Zambia on behalf of Lloyds Register in establishing a school there. Roger, having done the Durban 2 Dublin trip with Jaco and Howard in 2009, has more than enough experience to take this group up to Northern Zambia and bring them safely back to Durban. Roger, Brian and the rest of the team is expected back in Durban on Friday, 2 July where they will be welcomed at an event in Doonside, just South of Amanzimto . I am sure Roger will once again have many stories to tell when they return; just follow the Blog on the Moto Tour website and you’ll see what I’m talking about. When Roger is not away on some sort of a tour he runs a very successful Off-Road Rider Academy in associa on with Country Trax based at Imbabala Game Reserve near Greytown. IN THE NEWS Amanzimto Beach saw the first Burn-Out on the Beach hosted by the newly formed CMA Chapter in Amanzimto . The morning started off with Prayer on the Road at three different points, praying for safety and protec on of our biker friends and families. From these three points the groups headed down to To Beach for a short 30 minute “come as you are” service and sharing from the Word of GOD. This was well supported by the local biking community with almost 90 bikers, their families and friends a ending. CMA believes that this is what we need as brothers and sisters in biking; we need to come together on occasions like this and pray together for one another, do what we do best which is love, caring and respect. This was exactly the case; we went for an early morning ride, were encouraged by GOD’s Word and had a good breakfast at the To Spur that morning. CMA Amanzimto invites one and all, big or small, to join them the 2nd Sunday of each month on To Beach for “Burn-Out on the Beach”. REVIEW: BMW R1200GS FIRST GLANCE: Now isn’t this a beau ful bike? Combine ideas of adventure and motorcycling and the BMW R1200GS is the motorcycle that comes to mind. The R1200GS is BMW Motorrad’s best-selling model and has been carrying world travellers across the globe for decades. CHASSIS AND SUSPENSION: Known for its Paralever and Telelever suspension, the BMW R1200GS is excep onally proficient on-road. Going off-road on such a large motorcycle is daun ng, but the R1200GS Adventure model adds some components for extra dirt-worthiness and greater fuel capacity to take the BMW motorcycle farther. A single-sided swing-arm and sha drive are lowmaintenance as is the air-cooled engine – an important selling point for riders who want to tour the world. COMFORT: The motorcycle is comfortable all day in the saddle, riding alone or two-up. The seat (rider and pillion) was comfortable enough so you’d spend the whole day there and only stop to refuel or visit the li le room. The handle-bar posi on was perfect and at no stage of my me on this bike did I feel my arms wanted to fall off. My passenger added on how comfortable the bike was and could easily sit there and take a nap. HANDLING: The handling of the GS was effortless; as for versa lity and sensibility; a competent rider aboard a 1200 GS can keep pace with most riders on sportbikes in twis es. It’s tall enough to be able to see over most standard cars (a plus in thick traffic) and it’s virtually bulletproof. The bike allows fi ng of road friendly tyres or a set of knobblies for when you want to spend more me on dirt roads. On that subject, off-road, the GS with the right set of tyres provides you with the assurance of stability and rigidness without se ng you heart off on a tangent. It’s an easy bike to toss le and right through bends and what be er way to back that up with the fi ed ABS and ASC (An Slip Control). PERFORMANCE: Highway cruising speeds is easy work for the GS with 4000 rpm genera ng roughly 210km/h in sixth gear. That engine rpm was about ideal for me, though it revs much higher, I generally shi ed between 5-6K at the very latest, usually s ll in the fours. It’s where the motor is happiest blending smoothness and torque, second gear was best for anything off-road under about 60km/h. A larger thro le manifold and revised air intake contributes to a higher rev ceiling of 8500 rpm and a 5% boost in horsepower and torque. An electronic exhaust flap and new muffler internals gives the GS the Boxer thump, add am a er-market can and this bird will sing a different tune.
CONCLUSION: The BMW R1200GS is large and in charge of the adventure touring division. Riders who can afford it will appreciate the comfort and abili es of the BMW R1200GS Adventure. Each me I’m graced with a BMW 1200 GS for a review I am swept up into giddy excitement and immediately start planning a trip somewhere. BOTTOM LINE: If you’ve ridden a BMW before and a GS at that, change to a rival will be highly unlikely. PRICE: R147 798.00 - Incl. 14% VAT

JUST FOR FUN: My Sponsored CB1000R Every year Honda SA gives me a bike, along with the 4 Academy Bikes, to ride for personal and training use. For 2010 they decided to give me the new CB1000R with ABS and boy do I love this bike; making it the 105th bike I’ve ridden in 4.5 years of Bike Talk. It is such a good all-rounder that you never get red of it; ride it to work in traffic or ride it to the Chicken Rally in Port Edward no problem or effort at all. Riding posi on is semi-upright leaving you relaxed but ready to lean it through the best bends KZN can throw at it. Its handling is supurb, easy to stear and counter-stear or drop into a corner; there is nothing unexpected about this bike. It is a stable and solid sa sfier front to back and priced perfect.

GEARING UP: Adventure Jackets WriƩen by John Briscoe of Gear Up Motorcycle Accessories How on earth does one evaluate these jackets when there is no way of tes ng the real reason for wearing these garments i.e. protec on in the event of a fall? …!!! I have made the assump on that all the jackets we sell have CE approved body protectors (elbow, shoulder and back). We have found that the more expensive jackets use a be er quality Cordura or equivalent and hence do offer a be er level of skin protec on. The other factors such as Appearance, Weight, Fit, Zips, Linings (warmth and waterproof), Air Flow quali es, Water proof pockets, Inside Pockets (quan ty and depth), External Pockets, Velcro u lisa on, Sleeve joiners, Colour Connectors, Colour Range, Visibility, Suitability for SA condi ons, and Value for Money are all comparable within a subjec ve ra ng out of ten. So what I’ve done is exactly that – drawn up a table and assessed each jacket in terms of what I’ve experienced whilst in the industry and prior to that as a customer. Yes, it may be biased but a er all it will be a guide against which you as the purchaser may be able to assess your own feelings about the jackets. The table shows some really interes ng outcomes! The whole exercise indicates it all comes down to the type of riding you are going to do. There is no jacket that tops out in all the categories. So the winner is the one, which scores most consistently in each of these. Similarly the jackets occupying second and third spots have also done well without domina ng any area. Another person may well score these top three jackets differently and the results could be extremely different. In conclusion: I have always said, the jacket which fits you the best, feels the most comfortable, suits your pocket and risk profile, is the one to go for. Most of the manufacturers have a top of the range jacket e.g. Richa, that sells for more than R8000-00 and no doubt would be a winner, but it is just a bit too expensive for most of us and hence I have excluded it from the survey - not having ridden in one as yet. This by the way is the ”Ferrari” of jackets. So get down to your favourite dealer chat to him and please feel free to contact me should you wish to clarify any of my thoughts. As a final perspec ve, the role of price is significant and I’m sure would change the picture if this were categorised in terms of pricing levels – something for us to work on. REVIEW: KTM 990 Adventure FIRST GLANCE: Just looking at this bike and its sharp dis nc ve lines makes you realise that this is one durable piece of machinery. From the almost ver cal screen, the bright colour, the slim profile and the rigid frame hidden by the panels just shouts out: “I am as tough as nails, ride me any way you want and I’ll get you there!” Doesn’t that just scare you a bit knowing this bike might outlast you? CHASSIS AND SUSPENSION: The fully adjustable WP - PDS shock provides for sufficient reserves in every situa on. Thanks to hydraulic spring preload, it is possible to adapt it perfectly to the respec ve load by means of a flip-out adjustment knob. Suspension travel on the 990 Adventure is impressive at 210mm, whilst the 990 Adventure R offers a whole 55mm extra and sets the standards with an incredible 265mm. The monocoque space frame made from chrome molybdenum is the most stable and at 11kg, also the lightest construc on on the market; insurance for simple handling and outstanding direc onal stability. COMFORT: Different to the Yamaha and BMW rivals the KTM provides you with a single seat comfortable enough to take you places you’ve never been including the odd Iron-Bu or two. This of course is the only one of the three bikes where you could put the bike on the main stand and lie on the seat for a breather comfortably. HANDLING: The off-road sized rims and heavily-treaded tyres should spell vague handling, but largely they don’t. The quality WP suspension is plush and only gets a bit wobbly if you start throwing it around at high-speed. Feedback is enough to inspire confidence, and it rarely gets flustered. The KTM 990 Adventure has sports-bike kicking pace on less than perfect roads, or will trot along enjoying the scenery too. The twin fuel tanks require filling individually, which is a minor inconvenience but helps keep the bike slim-line and the weight down. PERFORMANCE: I took the Adventure on the freeway so I could get a feel of how it performs under hard accelera on at rela vely high speed. Excellent! No ma er in what gear I was in, neither the rpm levels, the V-twin delivered the needed grunt that made the KTM feel able to pass cars with no problem whatsoever. Thro le response is great and the bike will amaze you with every twist. But let’s face it, who am I kidding? The off road is where the 990 Adventure belongs and I was in for a rough ride. The trails are a kid’s play and I didn’t manage to find it lacking the ability to suppress any obstacle that it has encountered. This bike relies on its race-inspired character to save the situa on and it does it with success every single me.
CONCLUSION: The KTM 990 Adventure isn’t a cheap bike, but for your he y outlay you get a versa le bike that will tour, long-distance commute and hammer along back roads at an indecent pace. It’ll even deal with gentle off-roading in novice hands, and a set of full knobbly tyres add enough trac on to keep more experienced mud-pluggers happy. From street use to off-road hardcore exploring has never shown a meaner streak than the KTM’s 990 Adventure. REVIEW: Honda VFR 1200 REVIEW BY HEIN JONKER I recently had the opportunity to make a trip up to Richards Bay for some Bike Talk business and remembered clearly what happened the last me I went up on a VFR (800); I ended up ge ng a R2500 speeding fine, only this me I wasn’t going to make the same mistake again. I was really looking forward in riding this bike to find out what the Japs had done to the VFR1200 that was so different from the VFR800. Approaching the VFR, I noted it’s much be er looking in ‘person’ than in pictures. My eyes were drawn to the shapes, angles, contours, paintwork and interes ng use of metal accents. It’s unique, I’ll give it that. The VFR1200 is a sport-touring motorcycle and more likely to go against the Suzuki Hayabusa, Kawasaki ZX14 and BMW K1300S rather than the sport-touring Yamaha FJR1300, BMW K1300GT and Honda’s own ST1300. The motor pumps out a claimed 172 hp – not class leading, but certainly enough to put a smile on your face. It’s quality horsepower too, the 129Nm of torque make for a surprisingly strong mid-range once you’re over 3000 rpm. The muffler has an internal servo valve emi ng a rather uninspiring tone at idle that morphs into that famous Honda V4 drone as the revs increase. There is no talk yet as to when we will see an automa c transmission op on (actually an electronically shi ed, dual-clutch six-speed) in the country, but the unit I rode had the standard six-speed manual box. I thought the hydraulic clutch felt a bit on the s ff side – not the light, silky-smooth unit I’ve come to expect on the VFR800, but the transmission itself shi ed posi vely and without effort. Instead of tradi onal double overhead cams, the 1,237 cc, V4 engine goes with Uni-cams first found on Honda’s four-stroke motocross bikes. The cam sits directly over the intake valves (which are larger and heavier) while the exhaust valves are ac vated by a rocker system. This reduces reciproca ng mass as well as removing some fairly heavy components from the far reaches of the engine. The VFR1200 motor is not only lighter than the 800 version; it’s physically smaller, allowing for op mal engine placement within the frame. The rear cylinders are narrower than the front, so si ng astride the motorcycle it’s remarkably hourglass shaped. Once underway, the thro le response was consistent. The 76-degree V of the new engine, combined with offset crankpins allowed the engine to func on without the weight and complexity of any sort of counter-balancers. Just enough “character” seeps through the bars, pegs and seat so the rider knows he’s not aboard a refrigerator. The pegs and bar placement seemed pre y close to the VFR800, which is on the sporty side rather than the “sit up and beg” riding posi on of the more touring-oriented ST1300. A blast up through the gears was a real eye opener, once I hit 3000 rpm and up, it gave me re na-fla ening accelera on. The VFR is so refined that it felt as if it was loafing in its own ‘happy place’. The legal cruising speed of 120 km/h comes up at 3500 rpm in sixth making the VFR1200 an effec ve touring bike, although the 18.5 L tank will mean a fairly limited cruising range. Wind protec on from the double-skinned fairing seemed good, and the trip up and back to Durban gave me enough me to fully evaluate the “fa gue factor.” Curb weight with a full tank and all fluids is a reasonable 268 kg only 18 kg more than the VFR800. Once underway, it feels like a 600, proving that mass centraliza on really works. The steering is light and neutral, and even the turning radius is quite reasonable as pulling feet-up U-turns on two-lane roads was no problem. A learning curve for me was that the turn-signal switch and horn-bu on posi ons were reversed on the le grip which caused me beeping the horn a few mes instead of signaling. Lekka dof! Riding the VFR1200 a er having been on the VFR800 for a year was a real eye-opener. In reality, the VFR1200 is simply much more refined. A mere 20 minutes aboard the VFR1200, le me overwhelmed with an impression that the VFR1200 is extremely solid and a remarkable blend of performance and sophis ca on. REVIEW: Yamaha XT1200Z Super Tenere FIRST GLANCE: The much-awaited and an cipated Yamaha XT1200Z Super Ténéré finally broke loose with the goal of pping some of the adventure-touring kings off their thrones and I must say the all-new Japanese bike has all the creden als to make that possible. To begin with, there’s a great demand for big-bore adventure sports bikes in general and, with the right ergonomics, powerplant and innova ve features, for the all-new Super Ténéré in par cular. CHASSIS AND SUSPENSION: The chassis meets the bike’s high standards even though the Super Ténéré is built around a steel frame instead of an aluminium one as we would expect and although this contributes significantly to the bike’s weight, at least it is sure to withstand severe abuse while off-road riding. This brings me to the suspensions, which are fully-adjustable front and rear and another important and good choice was that of using spoked rims instead of cast ones from the same reason as in the case of the frame. COMFORT: Just looking at the rider and passenger seats makes you want to get on and start changing channels. Hello; bike seat not couch seat. Same diffs, it is super comfortable and at no stage did I feel the need to get off because my bu is falling off. The rider seat is also adjustable and can be dropped or raised with a simple “under the seat” manoeuvre. HANDLING: Si ng or standing, dirt or road, makes no difference. During my ride on it I found the bike to be rock solid through corners, downhill or uphill, over bumps no ma er what you throw at it; the feedback was posi ve and without any unexpected twitches on the handlebar. PERFORMANCE: I found the thro le response sa sfying even roll-on at 140km/h in 6th truly ins lled the confidence in me that if a gap ever presented itself; I could take it. Taking it off-road proved even more fun and I just had to test the TCS and ABS; let me tell you, I have never felt so much control while slamming on both the brakes on dirt in my life. It just came to a solid in-line stop... period. In the performance department, in all its aspects, I can not fault the Super Ténéré, it really gives you everything you pay for and what you expect from it. I probably only used the p of the “power iceberg”, there is so much more down there that this bike wants to give, it’s just wai ng for the right moment and able rider.
CONCLUSION: Yamaha gives you the op on of two models; one standard no frills no fuzz and another fi ed standard with a set of aluminium side panniers, a bash plate and a headlight protector. Over and above this Yamaha also offers plenty of accessorizing possibili es; just ask the guys at Perry Yamaha to see the catalogue. This is the kind of bike that meets the best of both worlds, meaning it can go where the BMW R1200GS goes and yet look almost as street-worthy as the Duca Mul strada or the Triumph Tiger. We can understand why Yamaha expects so much from this model and I bet it won’t disappoint. Just look at it and then ride it. TECH TALK: Hearing Protection: Why? It’s not hard in this country to lose your hearing. In the 80’s everyone blamed it on the Angola war; today we blame it on cheap helmets, loud pipes and vuvuzelas. Rule of the thumb is that anything over 80db for more than just a couple of minutes will begin to tear away at your hearing ability. Most riders have already had plenty of this ba ering and many are already 25% deaf or worse just from everyday life on the road. The solu on is simple. No ma er how much hearing you have le , beam yourself over to the nearest Ear InsƟtute and invest in a set of custom-made ear plugs. There is no law against using ear protec on when opera ng a motorcycle; the fact is, once you put your plugs in, you will be able to hear most of the same sounds you would hear if you were driving a car with the windows rolled up. Your visual percep on will be stronger because your senses won’t be processing so much audio informa on. It’s really quite a treat once you get your plugs in and start riding; you will no doubt be able to ride more because you’ll be less red mentally and faster because you will not feel in midated by the wind noise in your helmet. Oops, did I say faster? I recently tested my Interphone F4 Headset (took a phone call) while wearing my Moto-Ear plugs and riding at above legal speed; it completely eliminated the high frequency wind noise in my helmet but s ll allowed me to have a normal conversa on with the caller while riding. Furthermore, the faster I was going the more noise I expected but NO! With the Moto-Ear the experience was quite the opposite, the faster I was going the more effec vely the ear-plugs worked! Awesome stuff, I couldn’t believe it at first so I had to try it again... Many people simply cannot stand (or get used to) wearing them, and if improperly inserted will provide very li le noise reduc on benefit and will hurt in no me at all. Wearing earplugs of any kind, it seems to me, is counter-produc ve at speeds below 60km/h, but if you ride our highways for any distance at all you will CERTAINLY be be er off wearing a set. Just because your hearing is already a ‘li le’ damaged from wind noise you should not think it can’t get worse. Riding a motorcycle at highway speeds is a GUARANTEED way to damage your hearing - and poten ally profoundly. The majority of our hearing needs involve frequencies below 16 KHz. These sounds are what we use when we talk (and listen.) These also happen to be the frequencies most affected by wind noise hearing damage. For perspec ve, a noisy restaurant produces about 80db of noise; hearing loss can begin at 80db. Max safe exposure at 94db is 1 hour, and only 15 minutes to sounds in excess of 110db. You can get Earplugs really cheap but the ul mate solu on is to get a pair of the Moto-Ear Hearing ProtecƟon sets which is custom-made and moulded to each ear for ul mate comfort and can be tuned at specific levels of noise management. That’s truly the way to go but expect to see this as an investment and not as a consumable item like the cheapies you get from pharmacies and bike shops; they served their purpose, me now to move onto something reliable and more effec ve. Use them each me you ride and you’ll be doing yourself a great service; stop me any me, and you’ll find me wearing my Moto-Ear. Now, if you prefer to ignore this bit of advice, start prac sing saying “HUH” and get used to it.
