BILL CM TANG CMYK House Hi there. Here’s a little about myself.

26

I’m currently a second year student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture in Cambridge, Ontario with a passion for design, using the language of architecture to find a voice of my own. As an individual, I am innovative and adaptible but pragmatic and detailed in my work. In my spare time, I have an interest in linguistics and history, Latin, and historical Chinese.

32

The following are a collection of works which document my current interests and abilities in my first years of study in architecture.

a student residence Supervising: Project: Program: Location:

Rick Andrighetti, Anne Bordeleau Design Studio, Fall 2017 Student Residence Cambridge, Ontario

The Wellington house is a co-operative student housing residence designed to accomodate up to 5 students and a small take-out cafė comfortably in the center of downtown Galt in Cambridge, Ontario. The building sits on a steep hillside with access from both top and bottom, overlooking the parking lot of the Cambridge City Hall and into the Grand River Valley, flanked on the south by a small grove and to the north by existing houses. The result is a building which negotiates the awkward public-private dimensions of both it’s program and site with a take-out coffee shop in the basement facing out to the City Hall and residences ontop. a lighthouse IN COLLABORATION WITH CHI UN LEE

Supervising: Project: Type:

Terri Meyer Boake, Michal M. Bartosik 2018 CISC Competition Lighthouse + Observation Tower

This project was done as an entry for the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction’s annual compeition to showcase the potential of structural steel. With Obelisk, we sought to embody the 2018 theme of ‘Link’ by creating a monument which would connect the land to the ocean and people to the environment: a lighthouse and observation tower. Unlike many lighthouses that exist, the Obelisk extends at an angle towards the sea and reaches out to the sky. This cantilever represents the fundamental connection between the heavens, earth, the sea, and the people living in between. The sailors and lands that exist somewhere on the other side of the sea— our chosen site in Sicily has long suffered a migrant crisis from Northern Africa, in which many hundreds have died trying to cross the Mediterranean into Italy.

Supervising: Project: Program: Location:

Donald McKay Design Studio, Winter 2018 Anti-homeless House Cambridge, Ontario

A house designed for accessibility, this project was conceptualized as an anti-homeless house to be located in Cambridge, Ontario, to be affordable to live in, to operate and to build, yet also comfortable and decent for all 4 individuals.

3

The lower floor of the house is completely wheelchair accessible and contains most of the living spaces, while the second floor contains 2 rooms for able-bodied induviduals and a small living space. The house would be constructed using SIP panels for maximum thermal insulation and light steel framed interior walls.

an extruded shell Supervising: Project: Program: Location:

Rick Andrighetti, Anne Bordeleau Design Studio, Fall 2017 Urban Retreat Somewhere in the City

This introductory 1st year project focuses on creating a unique architectural experience in an imagined urban environment. Explicitly restrained to a maximum size of 8m x 8m x 4m, the building creates a microenvironment in the city for one or two induviduals to retreat away to. Punching, extrusion and overlapping the walls of several incomplete shells create the exterior facade. Emphasize is placed on bringing out the main stairs central to the interior space. Once again, all models and drawing were originally made and drafted by hand, using only analog methods. The drawings you see here are digitally improved edits of those original drafts. wood on steel Supervising: Project: Program: Location:

Donald McKay Design Studio, Spring 2018 Library + Community Centre Dundas Street W. at Old Weston

This project is set in the post-industrial neighborhood around Dundas West in Toronto. The focus is to create a community center which reflects its community: serving as a library, community kitchen and assembly hall. The building’s plan imitates a common industrial building type: 2 building blocks with a former service corridor converted to an atrium. The exterior also reflects the post-industrial surroundings, using a heavy concrete and corten steel base to support the colossal glulam columns and tall windows of the upper floors. The windows are further used as reveals against the columns to emphasize the exaggerated structure, playing with expectations of solids and voids. Below: First floor plan within the context of it’s Dundas west neighbourhood.
