The Almost Naked Truth:

Swimsuit Shopping for a Mom Body A

By Pam Molnar

new season is upon us. It is time to gather up your courage, sense of humor and post-holiday body and head out to the mall. You guessed it! It’s time to shop for a new swimsuit.

I know I am not alone when I say that I dread shopping for swimsuits. Normally, I am the kind of shopper that can find something quickly. Sales people love me because I don’t waffle back and forth when choosing new furniture. I picked out all the items for my remodeled kitchen in an afternoon. But swimwear? That takes forever. In fact, I probably spent less time looking for my wedding dress than I did looking for last year’s swimsuit. Like most women, I guess I fear being judged. Let’s be honest. We have all seen those women who clearly did not use the mirror in the dressing room. They are the highlight of

people watching on the beach. While it’s true that people may judge your choice of granite or living room sofa, it’s just not the same. You are not wearing your granite on your (way)over-25-check-out-all-my-flaws-post-children body. There is something to be said for those bathing suits from the early 1900’s.

I normally shop for a swimsuit alone, but I wonder if it would be better taking a friend for moral support. A friend would understand why you need to order margaritas at lunch and she would not remind you about them when you complained about your muffin top in the dressing room. No, I brave the dressing room sans friends (and margaritas). I wander around the swimwear department grabbing swimsuits that only look good on the hanger. I undress in a tiny room with bad lighting and scare myself with the glare coming off my winter white legs. While I criticize every wrinkle, stretch mark and pound, I make a silent promise to stop at the gym on the way home. After hitting three or four stores at the mall, I either give up and go home or settle on something that doesn’t look “too bad”.

The online stores offer size charts and body type suggestions, but honestly, they are no help. The size charts are from size 2 to size 16. Wouldn’t it be nice if they could show the suit on models that fit in that size? That way, if you were a size 12, you would be able to see what your size 12 butt was going to look like versus the size 2 butt. But it’s not like that. You see the suit on the Barbie Doll shaped model and you have to guess. So that’s what I did this year. I picked what I thought looked nice and I hit the “purchase” button. The good news is that it is backordered until May so I can put off the agony of trying it on until then. However, if it doesn’t fit, swimsuit season will be over. Oops! I hadn’t thought about that. I guess I have to head out to the stores after all. Wish me luck! Pam Molnar is a freelance writer and therefore does not get out in the sun very often. She hopes the glare off her white legs do not blind the other beachgoers this summer.

Online shopping is no better. Sure, you save yourself the embarrassment of running in and out of the dressing room looking for bigger sizes, but you open yourself up to another frustration. Although you are in the comfort of your own home, you have to guess how these suits will fit on you. The swimsuits look adorable on these tiny models with big boobs and flat stomachs but that wasn’t my body prechildren, let alone now.

Recycle, Reduce, Reuse with Kids

by Laura Lyles Reagan

Plastic is bad – paper is good! Collecting aluminum cans pays! Dumping motor oil is a criminal offense! Never use Styrofoam! It takes 500 years to breakdown in a landfill. These were things we learned in school when recycling first came of age. Recycling has come a long way in the last decade. Plastics, including grocery bags can be recycled these days. Types of plastics are numbered by recycling experts, for example plastic gaps are plastic #2 and #4, requiring different machinery and processes to breakdown. Plastic bags are often controversial. In some communities, they have been banned all together.Your best option may be specific recycling programs that focus exclusively on them. Many grocery stores collect plastic bags while some city recycling programs offer plastic bag pick-up or drop-off programs. Paper, perceived as environmentally friendly is actually more

complicated to recycle than you might think. Shredding paper reduces the quality and subsequently the value of the paper. Shredding paper turns it from high grade (letterhead and printer paper) to mixed grade, which includes telephone books and magazines. Paper food containers pose another problem. Your pizza box may have a recycling symbol on it but the grease may be an issue for recycling machinery. Many

liquids can be handled at your recycling center. Used motor oil is also accepted when placed in its original container or an empty plastic 1-gallon milk or water bottle. Even Styrofoam is recyclable. Today, Styrofoam (Plastic #6) can be recycled with special machinery. Check with your local recycling center. Send it to the landfill, it does take half a millennium to decompose.

BUT No recycling program works more effectively than reducing waste and reusing or repurposing items as appropriate.

Parents can play a pivotal role by changing their family culture to one of reducing waste through these simple suggestions. Making reducing waste can be fun and healthy. Buy a stainless steel water bottle for every family member. Bling them with notions of your choice as a family art project. While decorating them you can discuss how plastic water bottles are wasteful. You can even help them do the math. Start a home composting bin and in time plant a tree using the compost as fertilizer. Eliminate grocery store bags from your lives by purchasing and using canvas bags for all shopping. Go paperless on all your accounts.Your daily mail call will be reduced too. Let your kids know about the change you made. Cut up old clothes for cleaning rags instead of using paper towels. Get the kids involved by having them cut the rags into fun shapes. Investigate the use of natural cleaners. Kids might enjoy making the mixtures and actually help with the cleaning. Several websites can give parents ideas. http://www.goodhousekeeping. com/home/cleaning/tips/a24885/ make-at-home-cleaners/ http://eartheasy.com/live_ nontoxic_solutions.htm http://www.apartmenttherapy. com/20-diy-green-cleaningrecipes-141129 Laura Lyles Reagan is a social issues and family freelance writer. Is your child obsessed with Minecraft? Online safety ignorance no longer an excuse for parents

Internet safety company KoalaSafe is issuing a challenge to parents, stating that the dangers of completely unrestricted Internet access can no longer be ignored. Weekly news stories pour out about how children are being tragically harmed because of unfettered online access — and too often at home. Parent must become more vigilant in keeping their children safe. KoalaSafe founder, Steven Pack, said: “We used to be shocked when reading headlines of young teens being abducted after using chat apps or for young teens to be radicalized by online hate preachers, but that’s no longer the case. Such tragedies are a regular occurrence now in America and too often after every such event the reporting ends with a familiar by-line of ‘the parents had absolutely no knowledge of the teen’s online activities’.” This is no longer an acceptable excuse. For years, parents had no means to restrict time or content online because of the technology, but times have changed. Systems like the KoalaSafe Family Friendly WIFI Access Point now give parents control by letting them restrict the sort of content their children look at and restrict the amount of time they spend, so children don’t become obsessed with a particular site or concept. Asked if this stance is harsh on parents, Pack responded, “This is the first generation of children dealing with this problem, and the large device manufacturers have not made it easy for parents to introduce limits. I have a lot of sympathy for parents in this situation, which is why KoalaSafe exists. It gives them the tools and power to protect their children online.” KoalaSafe is a router with a wireless network that can be programmed to shut off. Easily connect children’s devices to the network, and schedule when they can access the Internet and it only costs $99. That is a reasonable price to pay for protecting your kids online. 10 Important Questions Patients Never But Should Always Ask Physicians P

14

atients often find it difficult to talk to physicians when they don’t particularly feel well. They tend to lack self-respect in these situations, failing to speak up for themselves. Naturally, this sentiment reflects upon physicians who are seen as not treating patients with dignity. Dignity implies selfconfidence and certainty, rarely afforded to patients. Patients are mostly discounted in the decision-making process because they are not asking the right questions at the right time.

complete advance care directives to alleviate undue suffering at the end of life. But most patients don’t know what to wish for when life takes a turn for the worse since they rarely know what is being asked of them.

Emergency Medicine physician, Kevin Haselhorst, author of the book Wishes To Die For, firmly believes that patients have to be more proactive in their life-and-death decisions by asking pertinent questions and becoming informed. He encourages people to

Dr. Haselhorst identifies ten important questions he recommends people carry with them when they go to the hospital or when they see their physicians. They are designed to help them ask the right questions, make the right decisions, and achieve the best

“The ultimate choice to live or die is not really just a medical decision,” he says, “… it’s a spiritual calling and one’s healthcare directives need to become one’s spiritual guidance documents to the living.”

outcomes. Here they are:

1. Is this test medical really necessary? Most of the testing performed in the emergency department are normal. This might have been reassuring to the patient, but often unsatisfying overall. Is the patient’s time and financial resources being respected or wasted? If the physician was almost certain that the tests would be normal or that they would not change the treatment plan, then why is the test required? Asking the doctor this question increases the chances you will receive adequate information. If given the option, patients might wish to have doctors fine-tune their evaluations rather than shotgun them. It can save pain in the emergency

room and then later at home when the bill arrives.

2. Can you feel and understand my pain? The doctor needs to know how bad is your pain, on a scale from 1-10, and where the pain is coming from. Patients are asked this question routinely, but the number is not as useful and important as the actions and expressions you share. What you feel and what physicians perceive has to be communicated carefully since it is critical information that often determines what the doctor does next. Without adequate discussion, you may end up being prescribed pain medication rather than a being offered alternatives to the real source or cause of the problem.

3. How am I supposed to cope with the stress? Patients and physicians rarely consider tension to be the primary cause of headaches, difficulty breathing, chest pressure or abdominal pain. Many ER physicians are reluctant to enter into discussions with anxiety-laden patients and may unconsciously suggesting that these symptoms are all in the head. Asking the doctor this question reduces the risk of these symptoms being ignored and increases the likelihood of you getting help that goes well beyond merely coping with anxiety. While it is true that the end of suffering is ultimately gained through the practice of acceptance - going with the flow of acknowledging and letting go, you should not be required to suffering unnecessary stress.

4 How can I be sure you are taking me seriously? Did the physician take the time to ask you a lot of questions? Did you know the answers and give the doctor detailed information? Surprisingly, it is difficult to describe how they feel or remember when your symptoms started. So write down the details you want to talk about with the doctor before you leave home. Tell the doctor what is going on, where and when it started. Tell the doctor what happened and what you’ve done or taken. The more you reduce the uncertainty that exists the better able the doctor will be to listen to your situation. Go prepared.

5 What am I to do next? What is the plan of action? Ask the doctor to go over what you need to know once, twice, even three times. Till you get what you need to know. Don’t be the patients who claims, “The doctor never told me anything”. As well as you can, ask

www.parentingplus.com

the doctor for information about what you should do and what you should know. Write it down. Seek first to understand, and then repeat what you need to do out loud to the doctor to make sure you understood. Ask for a verification of the plan of action and steps to be taken.

6. How old do you think I am? How old am I acting physically/mentally? Very few people wish to look or act their age, but when you get to the ER, it’s time to fess up. Don’t try to act like someone younger or healthier that you really are or feel. Act yourself and be real with the doctor. Adopt an attitude of honesty, sincerity and reason. Be in charge of your health. Pay attention to the health issues you can change from the ones you cannot. Confront the reality of the decisions you have to make. Exercise the best judgement and wisdom you are capable of.

7. Do you want to see me again? When should I come back? Make sure you get clear orders and that the reason to come back is necessary and appropriate. Not needing to come back to the ER is not a comment on your popularity. But coming back to make sure you don’t need cardiac-bypass surgery is necessary and appropriate. If you’ve been in treatment for a while, cutting ties with primary care physicians or signing out from the emergency department is usually scary. Ask the doctors to tell you when you should contact them and under what circumstances you should call for a return visit. 8. Am I dying? How long do I have to live? These are two tough questions. You may think that you won’t be dying anytime soon, even if you are in treatment with a terminal illness. Healthcare professionals usually shield or discourage patients from thoughts of dying. Yet sometimes, these are the questions that need to be asked and confronted directly. Don’t believe your physician has a psychic ability to answer these questions. Be prepared and listen carefully to his or her best medical opinions and judgements.

9. What is the endpoint to my disease or illness? What is the final outcome of this process or treatment? Ask the doctor if the condition is transient, temporary or permanent. Ask how long it will take to recover. Be real and be prepared. The actual medical condition may catch you off guard. You may have to deal with a lengthy recovery. The chances of survival may not be that promising. The outcome you hope for

may not be possible and eternal life is not an option. Some time, the endpoint begins when you surrender – accept and understand – the medical conditions you face. It is only then that you can maximize the potential to both live the rest of your life happily and die with dignity and at peace.

10. Can you offer me spiritual guidance please? Can you respect my wishes to die with dignity in my own way? Physicians connect with patients on many personal levels, but rarely through in a way that address one’s personal and spiritual needs. As the end of life draws near, you may have needs that the doctor cannot provide or address. While your doctor may appreciate the struggles of you face empathetically, you need to ask the doctor to stop intervening on your behalf and allow nature to take its course. Your dignity can be recognized if you tell the people around you to appreciate who you are spiritually, first and foremost. It is your right. Wishes to Die For Kevin J. Haselhorst, M.D. List $12.95 Paperback 225 pages Published by Tranquility Publications (Second Edition March 1, 2016) ISBN-10: 0991571444 ISBN-13: 9780991571444 What are your wishes? Dr. Kevin Haselhorst has posed this question to his patients for years while practicing emergency medicine. Patients inevitably say, “You tell me.You re the doctor.” Dr. H. has taken this task to heart while writing Wishes to Die For. Empathy, being an inside journey, is the art of medicine that builds mutual respect between physicians, patients and family members. While Advance Care Directives (ACD’s) are the voice for those who can no longer speak, Dr. Haselhorst offers impassioned words about the value of ACDs as a spiritual undertaking and declaration. Advance care planning as preventative medicine emboldens readers to eventually graduate from Alpha care to Omega care through traditional guidelines for higher education.

Infertility Infertility was once seen as a woman’s reproductive problem. In the pre-feminist world, motherhood proved a woman’s worth. This is no longer the case. Modern medical science and research have taught us that infertility affects both, men and women. Beyond that, we have also learned that the causes of infertility don’t start and end with the male and female reproductive systems. It’s the perfect time to take an in-depth look at one of the influences that may largely impact infertility: one’s diet. Among a vast number of root causes leading to infertility is diet. More specifically, sensitivities that your body has to certain foods can trigger an autoimmune response, causing devastating symptoms in your body, including inflammation, nutrient malabsorption and organ function abnormalities, just to name a few. Such conditions can negatively impact fertility for both men and women. Likewise, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age. Many of the health issues associated with PCOS directly impact fertility due to the inflammatory response, which can be triggered by eating certain foods, especially if your body has sensitivities to them. While there are many foods that are likely to cause inflammation, there are also some that may help reduce inflammation, such as leafy green

16

vegetables. As each person is molded differently, it is important to be aware of how different foods affect you as an individual. While there are many foods that cause inflammation and autoimmune reactivity, gluten is by far the number one culprit. Celiac disease, a digestive disorder caused by sensitivity to gluten, can cause male infertility according to Mayo Clinic studies. While a gluten intolerance or sensitivity alone cannot directly cause infertility, the symptoms can. Inflammation in your gut can affect your reproductive organs or inhibit proper absorption of nutrients, which are needed for optimal sperm, egg and hormone production. Therefore, celiac disease and gluten sensitivities/reactivity can lead to infertility in both men and women. While there is a celiac panel to test for gluten autoimmune reactivity, this does not eliminate the possibility of sensitivities. This simple blood test fails to identify response to all known gluten epitopes, lectins, glutenin, gluteomorphin, and cross-reactants such as dairy, corn, and yeast, which can all trigger inflammation and other symptoms, again affecting fertility. For those looking to identify which, if any, foods they are sensitive to, testing is available that can help evaluate reactions to these specific foods. For example, Cyrex Laboratories’ Array 10, a unique, revolutionary panel, measures reactivity to 180 food antigens in the cooked, raw, modified and processed form and monitors the effectiveness of customized dietary protocols. Additionally, Cyrex Laboratories’Array 3 accurately identifies gluten reactivity, measuring antibody production against eight wheat proteins and peptides, three essential

enzymes, and gliadin-transglutaminase complex. If you suspect you may have sensitivities or reactivity to foods, or you’d like to learn more about Cyrex’s Arrays 3 and 10, all you need to do is consult with your doctor about how to get tested. In the last decade, we have learned so much about the power of food and its ability to affect our health and well-being. There are so many factors that can cause infertility, leading many to a grueling journey of IVF procedures, drugs and the high costs associated with it all. But what if the solution to your fertility struggles was as simple as your diet and unknown sensitivities to certain foods? The solution could be a lot simpler than you anticipated! If infertility is a concern for yourself or someone you love, this Month is a good reminder to speak with a physician about how diet may impact infertility. Dr. Chad Larson, NMD, DC, CCN, CSCS, Advisor and Consultant on Clinical Consulting Team for Cyrex Laboratories Dr. Larson holds a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degree from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Southern California University of Health Sciences. He is a Certified Clinical Nutritionist and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. He particularly pursues advanced developments in the fields of endocrinology, orthopedics, sports medicine, and environmentally-induced chronic disease. Dr. Larson is a clinical consultant to Cyrex Laboratories, a clinical immunology laboratory specializing in functional immunology and autoimmunity.
