How to Help Kids,Tweens and Teens Safely Navigate Social Media It seems like common sense, but a lot of kids, tweens and teens just aren’t heeding this advice when they use social media---and getting themselves into trouble in the process. Just ask attorney James Mueller, a managing partner with Verner Brumley McCurley Mueller Parker, a Dallas-based family law firm. “Some of the things kids put online, it’s going to affect them because it doesn’t go away,” says Mueller. “It will follow them in life.” As a family lawyer, Mueller sees this first-hand. “In one custody hearing, a daughter gave the judge all these reasons why she didn’t want to live with mom. We found out that, when we checked the girl’s Instagram account, she didn’t want to live with mom because dad allowed her to smoke marijuana and drink while at dad’s house,” recalls Mueller. “The next thing you know, she’s kicked off her sports team, the judge has now seen all of this, and dad is in trouble. The sad part is it all came from an Instagram post.” Kids need to realize that these days everyone looks at their social media activity, including teachers, coaches, lawyers, colleges, scholarship committees and potential employers. Stories abound in the media

about athletes getting kicked off teams, students losing their scholarships and kids getting arrested for some of their questionable antics that got posted on social media. “When any potential employee sends me a resume, the first thing I do is pull any social media accounts that I can,” points out Mueller. “You can find out an unbelievable amount of information.”

Think before you Post

Mueller advises that parents, as the first line of defense, need to play an active role in their kids’ online lives by providing age-appropriate limits. Dr. Sandy Gluckman, a Functional Behavior and Health Therapist, agrees. “In laying down the rules, especially for younger kids, it’s important to give kids the logic behind the rule and provide examples that demonstrate the bad things that could happen,” says Dr. Gluckman, who advises a collaborative approach, asking kids what kind of rules they could live with and then negotiate. “When you’re a nurturing rather than authoritative parent, you’re educating and empowering kids, which will help them learn to think things through themselves.” So how can kids, tweens and teens engage online in a more responsible way? 1. Think before you post. If you’d be embarrassed to show what you’re going to post to your grandmother, then don’t post it. If you’d be compromising your

4

Parenting Plus • August 2016

safety (such as posting where you’ll be at a certain time or that you’re home alone), then don’t post it. If you’d be hurting or embarrassing someone else, then don’t post it. 2. Assume what you post isn’t private---even if you send a private message. Mueller points out that just because you intended something to be private when you sent it doesn’t necessarily mean the other person understands (or wants to adhere to) your intentions of keeping it private. As he says, “You can only control your action, you can’t control other people’s actions.” 3. Realize what you post is permanent--even if you later delete it. Once you hit send, you create a permanent cyber-record of your words and images delivered via status updates or news feeds. Someone might have already saved or shared your post by the time you delete it from your account. 4. Be aware that your online activity affects your reputation. When you realize that other people besides your friends are checking out your social media accounts, you’re more likely to do the right thing online. With kids of all ages texting, exploring social media and posting photos, parents can use these tips to help them navigate the use of social media in a safe, responsible way. Fed and Out the Door!

Your husband hits the snooze button for the third time, you haven’t even thought about what to pack in your kids’ lunches, they’re still sleeping and need baths, and everyone has to be out the door in fifteen minutes. Sound like mornings at your house? It doesn’t have to. With these time-saving tips, you can reduce the stress of your family’s rushed mornings. Get a head start the night before. Anything you can do ahead of time will help in the AM when time is tight. Start right after school by making sure all homework papers go right back in each child’s backpack after assignments are finished. Each evening, make sure your kids have put their backpacks in a designated morning spot, taken baths or showers, and laid out their next day’s clothes. Then, all they have to do when they wake up is get dressed, eat breakfast, and stop by their morning spot for everything they need to take to school. Say no to Mr. Snooze Button. If you’re not a morning person, consider going to bed at a decent hour so you’ll be less tempted to sleep in (and in and in). Tracy Webb, a self-described night owl and mother of two, enjoys staying up late but admits that her family’s mornings run a lot smoother if she goes to bed by 10:30 PM and gets up as soon as her alarm goes off. When you get a full

night’s sleep, you wake up refreshed and ready to face holds.

whatever your day

Teach your older children to get ready on their own. Taking charge of a morning routine is an important step in your children’s growing independence. Train your kids to pick out school clothes, fix an easy breakfast, brush their teeth and their hair, and get shoes and coats on – all by themselves. This way, you can focus on finishing any last-minute morning tasks or helping younger children get ready. Divide and conquer. If your children are too young to get ready on their own, split morning responsibilities with your spouse like Leia Rayman does. While Leia showers, her husband, Cory, feeds breakfast to their infant daughter, Janelle, lays her back down for a short nap, packs her bag for the sitter, and leaves for work. Leia is then free to finish getting ready before waking Janelle up, dressing her, and dropping her off with the sitter on her way to work. If you have multiple young children, try playing man-toman: each of you take one child to feed, dress, and get to daycare or school. Make mass batches of your family’s goto sandwiches. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches freeze great in individual sandwich bags, and ham or turkey work, too, if you hold the mayo (try a little butter for moisture instead). Thirty minutes is all it takes to fill your freezer with a big batch of sandwiches that will last a couple of weeks. The frozen sandwich acts as an ice pack for the rest of the lunch but thaws by lunchtime. Add in a prepackaged yogurt, a piece of fruit, and a juice box, and you have a healthy lunch that’s easy to grab and pack in a hurry. Institute a “No breakfast until shoes are tied” rule. In Carolyn Brednich’s house of

6

Parenting Plus • August 2016

four boys, breakfast used to be the time-zapper of their morning. As the boys laughed and dawdled at the breakfast table, the minutes ticked by, leaving them in a rush to get dressed and gather backpacks. Now, the kids have to be completely dressed with shoes on before they can sit down to eat. Since implementing this rule, Carolyn’s sons stay focused on getting ready quickly. “Boys are always hungry, so breakfast is a good motivator to hurry up!” she says. You can implement the same type of rule with technology. If your kids waste time texting or watching TV in the morning, allow them electronics privileges only after they are completely ready for the day. Expect the unexpected. Whether your kindergartener spills milk at breakfast or your teen forgets his backpack at home, the unexpected happens, even with the perfect routine in place. Emily Hanauer, a mother of four, says, “Don't beat yourself up if things don't go perfectly. Sometimes my kids have to buy lunch because I didn't realize we were out of bread, or my four-year-old wears his favorite shirt three days in a row because I don’t want to fight him over it. Some things just aren’t a big deal in the long run.” Try setting your departure time ten minutes earlier than needed to account for the occasional flat tire or that forgotten backpack. Use these tips to make your mornings less stressful, but remember what’s most important – that your mood, as the parent, sets the tone for the day. Take a tip from Emily: “No matter how crazy it is or how late we are running, I always pray for the kids and give them each a giant hug before we get in the car. I want their day to start on a good note, knowing that I love them.” Now that sounds like something worth waking up for. Sandi Haustein is a freelance writer and mom of four. She prides herself on getting her kids to the bus stop on time.

Back-to-School Butterflies?

Helping Your Child Calm the Jitters

Colin* was starting 6th grade in a new school. At an orientation event, he became visibly unnerved as he struggled with the combination on a sticky locker. “He was concerned that he wouldn’t be able to open his locker with only four minutes between classes,” says mom Lynn Brown. (*Names have been changed to protect privacy.)

Colin’s particular fear is surprisingly common, and so is his apprehension about the beginning of a new school year. Most kids, even excited ones, experience a few butterflies in the first weeks. And the source of such uneasiness is not always obvious to parents.

What kids worry about.

Age, experience, and temperament all determine a child’s concerns.Young children with little experience outside the home may have separation anxiety. “Being in the care of adults other than their parents can be initially stressful for some children,” notes Deb Cockerton, a child and youth behavioral counselor. These youngsters also worry about practical matters, such as finding the bathroom and getting on the right bus. When they’re a bit older, children worry about whether they’ll have friends in their class and where they’ll sit at lunch. Older tween-age students are “concerned about how they will fit in with their peers, and how they will do academically,” says Cockerton. The start of puberty and issues like cyberbullying, body image, and athletic ability may be additional stressors. Some worries are not obvious to parents. Kerry Norris, principal and longtime educator, says, “There are always some things we don’t think of as adults…We’ve had little ones who are afraid to flush the toilet in the loud echo-prone bathrooms.” Older kids who are beginning to measure themselves against peers, may feel humiliated if they wear the “wrong” clothes or come to school with a “nerdy” haircut. Major transitions can cause feelings of insecurity, even if a child has previously done well. Brown says that Colin was “extremely successful and a model student” during his elementary years.Yet, as a kid who “thrives

10

on routine and predictability,” it took time for Colin to adjust to the new academic expectations, the more complicated schedule, and the pre-teen social dynamics of his new school.

Talk to veteran students. If your child is starting at a new school, make contact with kids that have been there a year or two. Fears of the unknown can be calmed with accurate kid-to-kid info.

Signs of anxiety.

Tour, meet, and greet.Visit the school so your child can see the layout. Make introductions to teachers and other school personnel.

Kids express anxiety in many ways. Some are vocal and quite specific about their concerns. But more often it is a child’s behavior that indicates his distress. Cockerton says, “The younger child can become more ‘clingy,’ not wanting to leave mom’s side.” The tummy ache is a common symptom of stress in younger kids. Older children can also suffer physical symptoms, such as headaches. They may eat more or less than usual when they’re feeling anxious, and Norris notes they may also experience sleep interruptions and moodiness.

How parents can help.

Kids feel more confident and competent when they come to school prepared. Experts like Cockerton and Norris agree that parents play a leading role in helping kids cope with back-to-school fears. Here are 15 ways to calm the jitters: Talk to your child about what worries her. Provide accurate information if she is misinformed. Listen carefully and respond empathetically. Avoid saying, “Don’t worry. You’ll be fine!” Focus on your child’s very real concerns. Create safe space. The tween who resists face-to-face conversation may “open up” at unexpected moments. Look for natural opportunities to listen and check in during daily activities—riding in the car, doing a chore, playing a game. Read books. Cockerton says books can give kids “language to express what they are feeling.” School-challenged characters can also normalize a child’s feelings. List it. Help kids refocus on the positive by listing the things they’re excited about as well as the things that scare them.

Brainstorm. Help your child build a repertoire of possible solutions to a problem. Brown’s son, Colin, was anxious at the thought of changing into his gym clothes among other boys. She says, “We helped him figure out where he could change and feel he had some privacy.” Play “what if…” What would you do if you forgot your lunch? What would you do if couldn’t find your homework? This technique gets even the youngest kids involved in problem-solving. As Principal Norris says, “Developing the skills to solve problems independently lasts a lifetime!” Role play. Act out potentially uncomfortable interactions: What can you say if you want to be friends with someone? What can you do if someone is mean to you? Resist overscheduling. Keep extracurricular activities manageable, especially during the first months of school. Kids need down time to unwind and reflect. Show confidence. Let your child know you trust her ability to succeed. Remind her of the many challenges she’s faced and managed in the past. Check parental fears. As Cockerton says, “Children are very good at reading their parents’ emotions and if the parent is worried about how their child will do at school, the child will interpret that as ‘something to be worried about.’” Resist oversharing your own fears with your child. Make home comfortable. Kids who are worried about a parent’s physical or mental health may be reluctant to leave home. When major life events (divorce, death, a family move) occur, maintain as consistent a routine as possible.

Get help. If your child’s difficulties persist, Brown says, “Networking with the school personnel is a critical piece of the puzzle… Open communication with school teachers, counselors, and others is paramount to ensuring the most successful year possible.” Soothe the Stress with Belly Breaths An anxious child tends to take quick, shallow breaths. A good self-calming technique is the “belly breath.” Here’s how to do it: Sit comfortably. Place one hand lightly on your belly. Breathe in slowly through your nose for a count of four. Feel your belly rise. Hold the breath for a count of two. Let your breath out slowly through your mouth as you count to four. Repeat several times.

It’s junk-free snacking everybody can feel good about and enjoy. There are many benefits to a raw based diet, the process of cooking can destroy much of the enzymes and nutrients in foods. By keeping our snacks raw and gently dried, not cooked, we are able to preserve more powerful nutrients for optimal nutritive benefits.

By sprouting and gently drying, not cooking, we unlock and preserve more powerful nutrients. This process also multiplies available proteins, enzymes and minerals, making good food easier to digest and allowing the nutrients to be more easily absorbed by the body.

All our seeds are hand sprouted at our own facility, and then dehydrated (not cooked!) so we keep the seeds “alive” and do not destroy all the nutrients that we just unlocked. The making of our snacks is closely monitored We, at Go Raw, are proud to offer more than 50 by real people for quality and consistency delicious, raw sprouted snacks to help you make in every batch, every day.
