Summer in Bloom
The lush blooms of summer make for endless options for vibrant arrangements. This means the summer bride can have her pick of the many in-season flowers for her bouquet. Yellows

Top 10 Mistakes Courtesy of PATRICIA CLARK Patricia Clark Weddings
1. Budget Blindness
Decide your budget first! Families need to set a clear dollar amount, and how and when funds will be available. It is key to find the local costs for services; cost for a Billings wedding can be substantially different than other cities. Stick with this budget and keep good records. Don’t overspend and you’ll be less stressed.
2. Guest List Woes
You must create the guest list early, as it will affect almost every facet of your day, from caterer to photographer, baker to florist. Not knowing this ahead of time will greatly impact your budget. Final guest count must be available to vendors prior to their ordering product – usually 3 weeks. A good estimate is to expect 70% to attend.
3. Getting Stuck on a Date
Select a few dates. The key to finding the perfect location is flexibility on the date. Some days of the week offer major benefits or less

expensive pricing. Gather information before you make a decision. Check the Billings365.com website events calendar before securing your date. Major local events will greatly affect room rates, availability, parking, rentals, dining, and the overall vibe that weekend.
4. Box Store Photographer
Choosing the right photographer is one of your most important decisions! A heartbreaking mistake is hiring a friend or family member as the photographer because they offered a great deal, only to receive poor quality images. Photos become the most tangible memories you will have. To choose the best photographer, don’t make your final selection based on their website; see one entire wedding to make sure you like their overall style.
5. Misunderstanding how venues are priced
Many couples will call around to find out the venue rental fees, only to find out later that rental amount is only a fraction of the real cost. A ven-
ue’s full cost is the rental, plus food, bar service, along with any other miscellaneous charges that are unique to that venue, such as cake cutting fees, setup/teardown fees, linens, etc. To get any true sense of the price, schedule a consultation.
8. Not Remembering the why! It’s YOUR Wedding Day!! It’s about the two of you and the beginning of your new life. Have fun and turn your wedding into a true reflection of who you are.
6. Waiting too long to Venue Shop! 9. Late vendor search Once you have a budget and guest count, begin researching venues right away. To gather accurate information, do not get info online. Make appointments to tour and take a list of questions. What is and is not included in your rental? Are you required to use onsite food service, or do you have the freedom to choose a caterer? This option could save you thousands of dollars on food alone.
7. Perfectionism!
There’s no such thing, especially on a wedding day where there are so many personalities and factors at play. Brides who rave about their wedding say they just “let go” and let the day flow. Remember, you can’t match your bridesmaids’ dresses to the linens, and fresh flower shades vary.
Book your venue/church first, then book other vendors quickly, but wisely. Vendors book a limited number of weddings per weekend, and for boutique businesses, you are their only event that date. Shop smart, check references, talk with your planner and venue manager, attend bridal events, and ask to see their work.
10. No Plan B? Outdoor ceremonies are very popular, but you need to have an alternate rain location. And post someone at the venue directing guests to the alternative site, waiting to start the ceremony to allow travel time.

The Hues of Summer Choosing colors for your wedding is, of course, an entirely personal matter. But that doesn’t mean the experts haven’t attempted to predict the trends for 2016. Writing for Glamour Weddings, Brie Walter of Brie’s Honeybees & Flowers predicted a classic palette of soft colors, such as blush and creams, would be popular this year. On the flip side, Leah Weinberg, of Color Pop Events, and Amanda Hansen, of Decoration, Inc., predicted that couples will choose brighter colors. Print color authority Pantone recommended a list of 10 of its colors for this year’s brides in its Fashion Color Report for Spring 2016. Among its picks were rose, peach, sky and nautical shades of blue, buttercup yellow, aqua, a grayish purple, an orange-hued red, a coffee-inspired brown and a bright yellow-green.
Go Multi-Tonal Another wedding trend creates a great opportunity to let brides be a little more creative with their color choices. It’s becoming popular to style bridesmaids in varying tones of a single color. For example, if you opt for greens, let each bridesmaid choose a unique gown in shades from pale mint to candy apple. You also might mix shades of hot pinks with bright oranges. Another option is to consider an expansive color palette, with the wedding party sporting varying muted shades of some of Pantone’s top-10 swatches.
Go For Contrast If you’re feeling adventurous, mix the two ideas for a rustic or woodland theme accented with vibrant pops of color. Subtle wood tones make a great neutral background for bright pops of color that evoke summer’s abundant flora. Of course, a more classic rustic theme can make great use of pale rose and cream, as well. Whatever aesthetic you choose, your personal touches will make your wedding your own.
Summer Venue Questions
Summer can be a great time for a wedding, but also a challenging one. From weather to mosquitoes, you’ll want to choose a venue that will be prepared for anything that might throw a wrench in your summer celebration. Hot, Hot, Hot
If the locale for your celebration is known to sometimes get dangerously hot during the summer months, you’ll want to make sure your guests will be safe and comfortable. If an outdoor ceremony or reception is on your wish list, make sure the venue also offers a backup indoor location in case the mercury soars to dangerous levels or a storm rolls in. Ask if electricity is available for a cooling station for guests or an air conditioner for the tent during the reception. You might decide to hold your wedding later in the day to avoid the afternoon heat. Check that the venue can accommodate this schedule.
Logistics
Summer weather also can bring the risk of causing a makeup meltdown. Will the bride have a properly cooled space to prepare for the cer-

emony? If the bride’s changing area is very far from the ceremony, ask if there’s a golf cart or similar mode of transport to get the bride safely (and coolly) to the aisle. What about appropriate changing space for the wedding party? The hot and sticky summer will make it pertinent that your entire wedding party can stay cool while glamming up.
Pesky Pests
An outdoor event in the summer is always at risk of unwelcome guests: mosquitoes. If the venue has any water features, such as a fountain or pond, make sure it’s well maintained to keep breeding mosquitoes at bay. If there’s a lot of brush, woods or a field, ask if the field is sprayed to prevent a mosquito invasion. Pretty much any outdoor space can be susceptible to mosquitoes during the summer, so ask how the venue plans to address the issue.
Playing Dress-Up From feminine floral prints to all-grown-up plunging back lines, the trends in summer wedding gowns are decidedly girly. Pretty Flowers
Floral prints are practically made for summer, and they’re a trend that’s goes hand in hand with weddings. Florals have been big in the fashion world at large for a few years, and brides are getting in on the trend, too. If your theme is ultra-feminine, incorporating pretty pink roses and creams, a floral gown will be a perfect match — from an all-over print to flowery details such as cascading blooms made of lace and beadwork. Florals also are suited to more colorful looks, such as a print with bright purple blooms. You’re limited only by the types and shades of flowers found in nature itself.
Showing Some Skin
A trendy place to incorporate visual effect on a wedding gown is the back. Designers are using super-sleek low back lines, as well as illusion details that seem to float. Pearls draped across the back and intricate lace designs are popular aesthetics in bridal gowns. Deep V necklines also are showing up on wedding gowns, as well as off-the-shoulder straps. Both make for seamless transitions to back line details. These skin-baring styles have the added benefit of keeping the bride cool in style during a summer wedding.
Subtle Colors
Gone are the days of the all-white wedding gown. A current trend for the trip down the aisle is lightly-hued wedding dresses in blush and cream. Flowing lightly colored tulle and coordinating flowers in the hair make for a super girly look. Pair similarly colored pearls with rose gold jewelry, which is currently experiencing a spike in popularity.
More Details
Brides are adding a long, loosely tied belt to accentuate the waist. A neutral-hued belt is adds interest to a pale-colored dress. Another detail that’s taking hold is feathers. Flowing from the waist or back, covering the skirt or contouring the bodice.

Let Them (Not) Eat Cake
The tradition of serving a wedding cake may seem to be as old as time. In fact, the beginnings of wedding cake traditions were documented in ancient Rome and medieval England. From early recipes containing wheat and barley to sweeter varieties couples have relished the opportunity to playfully smash in each other’s faces, cake has been part of our wedding traditions for hundreds of years, according to Gastronomica.com. Today, however, it is becoming more common for couples to ditch the wedding cake altogether in exchange for more modern sweets. Intricately decorated petit fours, cake pops, cupcakes, ice cream, sorbet
and other sweets are finding their way to the table at the reception.
Almost Cake
Cupcakes are a culinary trend that’s found acceptance from the food truck to the formal wedding affair. But that doesn’t mean they have to be ordinary. Consider a tower display of lacy cupcake wrappers adorning miniature gourmet confections for a sweet that does double duty as decor. Pies also are an option. Choose
decadent cheesecakes laced with liquor or pastries filled with summer’s freshest berries.
Frozen Delights
Guests looking to cool off during your summertime affair will welcome trendy frozen creations. Consider a doit-yourself sundae bar or a selection of fruity sorbets.
Have It All
If you’re overwhelmed with options
and your sweet tooth can’t make a decision, consider a desert bar where guests can help themselves to a variety of options. After all, you can’t have too much of a good thing.
All Things Miniature
Whoopie pies, cream puffs, meringue, madeleines and donuts — there’s practically no dessert that can’t be miniaturized to make an impression at the wedding reception. Pick a handful of options so guests can sample.
Choosing Performers Music is one of the most important parts of any wedding celebration. Finding the perfect musical act or DJ can be a frustrating exercise if you’re not prepared for the search. efore deciding on your final choice B for music, make sure to ask some basic questions — along with any others specific to your wedding — to make sure you find the one most aligned with your nuptial needs. Do you perform original music or play cover songs?
This is a question for a band you are consider hiring. You want to make sure their musical preferences match what you’re looking for. Weddings are generally an atmosphere where cover bands may be a better fit, but this is up to you.
What is your price range, and can I get a quote on paper?
Making sure you have a written quote will help resolve any confusion come payment time.
How many weddings have you performed for in the past couple of years?
This answer may be one of the most important, as you want to make sure the company is experienced and up to the challenge.

Will you be providing the equipment and song list? Can you take requests? A “no” answer to any of these questions could lead to more work for you as you try to coordinate what will be played during your ceremony.
Do you only play one event per day?
You want to make sure you have the full attention of the musical act or DJ during your wedding.
Are you easy to get in touch with if I have questions throughout the music planning process? A good musical act or DJ will surely answer “yes.” A good follow-up question is for a list of references just to make sure you can conduct a little follow-up research.

Personalize Your Checklist
Set aside time on a weekly basis to plan. Choose a day or two during the week to focus on wedding planning. Divide and Conquer still communicating. Make a list and divide the list in half and each of you work on the list. Prioritize, Prioritize, and Prioritize. Choose the things most important to you and be flexible on some of the other details. Be flexible and fair. You both have to be willing to bend. Take one thing at a time. Don’t get overwhelmed in planning. Enjoy the journey. Once you select a date and determine your budget the rest will fall into place. Finish your to-do-list. The sooner you finalize smaller tasks, the better. Make your wedding appointments fun with venue tours and food and cake tastings. It doesn’t have to be all business. Take time to enjoy each other’s company. Take time for each other make sure there are moments throughout your planning to enjoy each other. Remember it is your day and it can be just like you want it to be. Decide early on if you would like children at your wedding or if you prefer not to have children and plan accordingly. This allows people to make arrangements for child care if needed. Book early. Vendors book quickly and your date may be taken. Delayed planning is stressful. Most vendor’s offer installment payments. Budget for your wedding to take the sting out overspending.
Décor
Let your creativity flow. Select a style to match your personality, Simple, modern, vintage, DIY, rustic, whichever style you choose, no one knows your vision better than you. While considering a venue, ask what décor is provided in the rental price. How much additional decorating is needed to enhance your look? Large décor pieces can transform your ceremony and reception. Are ceremony backdrops and reception décor included in pricing? Show vendors what you want. Colors vary so it is a good idea to take along a color swatch so that everyone is on the same page. Plan ahead, don’t procrastinate and stay in your budget.
It’s Your Day
Be present in each moment and enjoy all the love and joy of your wedding day. Do a first look it allows you to enjoy a moment seeing each other for the first time. Don’t get caught up in perfection. Paper Crafts For the do-it-yourself bride, paper offers versatility and affordability that can’t be beat. It’s easy to add paper touches to everything from the aisles to the favors, so you can see why brides are getting crafty with paper. Pinterest is awash with ideas for paper creations for your wedding. Your options are endless, with scrapbooking and craft papers of every hue and texture and die-cutting machines galore on the market.
A Paper For Every Look
Add Hanging Décor From flowers and lanterns to everything in between, hanging decorations can add a special touch to any church, hall or reception area. The best part is that you can find — or make — a hanging decora-tion to match any theme. Consider the space you have to work with when coming up with hanging decor ideas. If your banquet hall is on the large side, it may be difficult to make enough pieces to fill it. On the other hand, you don’t want to overwhelm a small, cozy room with too many materials hanging from the ceiling. Find a balance to pull off the perfect look.
Flowers
Fresh or dried flowers make for the perfect touch suspended upside down from the ceiling. They provide vi-brant colors and distinctive smells, perfect for an entryway or spaces between tables. Mix them with ribbons, strings and other garnishes to make them even more attentiongrabbing. A colorful mix of flowers and ribbon can help you pull off the perfect soft design complement to nearly any theme.

practical backdrop for reception photos, consider handing a backdrop made of a combination of paper cutouts and other special touches that complement the color of your wed-ding. You’ll enjoy seeing guests flock to capture their own memories of your wedding in front of your spectacularly designed backdrop.
Check Out Bridal Fairs
The greatest benefits of attending a spring bridal fair involves being able to ask professionals what they can offer in the way of your unique wedding wishes. If you have an idea for a hanging decoration that you haven’t seen at weddings in the past, you can find out the possibilities of pulling it off by asking a designer or planner at a bridal fair. They also may come up with additional ideas that you hadn’t considered. This kind of collaboration is key in exploring all options for your perfect hanging decor.
Choose chic vellum or coarse kraft paper for just the aesthetic you want. Rustic weddings themes can make great use of natural and earth-tone papers. From the invitations to placecards to guest books, mix textures and shades of browns, creams and even leafy green to keep the look natural and accessible.
Add paper flowers to the outside of cheap paper lanterns for simple hanging decor. Craft paper butterflies to peek out from floral centerpieces. Hang a wall of paper flowers spaced evenly down the length of twine for the look of a floral curtain.
Functional Creations
If you expect the day to be hot, cut intricate patterns into circle-shaped sheets of scrapbooking paper and fold into a fan. Add craft sticks at each end for a unique take-home favor. Use thick stock paper to make favor boxes or accent cardboard boxes with a greeting. Make quick work of crafting placeCut or fold paper into floral shapes and patterns for affordable but beautiful cards with a paper and font to match decor. Wedding Party Bonding Coming up with the final roster of wedding party participants can seem like one of the biggest chores of planning your wedding. You don’t want to leave out anyone, and you also want to pair the right groomsman with the right bridesmaid to match your vision for photos. Once you select your party, it’s up to you to help them form a bond ahead of your wedding. That way every-thing from the rehearsal to the reception can go that much smoother. You want your wedding party feeling relaxed and able to have a good time, so do your best to bring them together. Ways to do so can range from throwing a party at your home or inviting everyone out for a fun evening on the town. Whatever you decide, be sure to include everyone to make sure you create the strongest bond possible.
Hit the Water
The springtime provides beautiful weather for outdoor activities. Take advantage by inviting your wedding party out for a day of fishing, boating, swimming or lounging. If you have a local
marina, consider renting jet skis or large rafts for the afternoon and spend the day getting to know each other in the water. You also could choose to simply spend the day at the pool. What’s more relaxing than laying poolside with a cool drink in your hand? The laidback atmosphere is perfect for fostering communication between those in your wedding party.
Play Sports
One of the best ways to build a bond is through a little friendly competition. Set up a halfday of fun on your local golf course, your local bowling alley or even your local paint gun range. Make sure everyone can attend well ahead of time and consider splitting teams strategically, so people out-side of your normal social circle can easily get to know those who aren’t. Your wedding party will appreciate your efforts in trying to bring everyone together before the big day.
Lawn Games Let’s face it. You want your wedding to be the most amazing experience in the history of weddings. The entertainment of your guests is paramount to you, and you’ll do anything to make sure they’re having the time of their lives. Lawn games let your guests wind down after your formal ceremony. They also make for great conversation and friendly competition that bring out the best in your friends and family members. Lawn games are not only fun but inexpensive, as well. You can even build them yourself. Decide which lawn games you’re hoping to incorporate and head to the hardware store for lumber and other necessities. Some of the most popular lawn games include bags, Frisbee golf and lawn darts. Make your own scoring systems and rules to make things more interesting. Here are a few more ideas:
or toy store. Or you could make your own by pur-chasing a few steel rebar rods about 1 inch thick and getting your hands on some actual horseshoes. Check in with family members who have horses or even your local horse veterinarian to see if they have any extras lying around. You’ll have a legitimate horseshoe lawn game set up in no time.
For the Kids
Let’s say you plan on having four or five lawn games set up for the adults at your reception. This is a good number that allows rotation between games and includes plenty of guests in the fun. But what about the kids? Children’s lawn games can include pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey, potato sack races or simply Horseshoes is a time-tested lawn game perfect for all smaller versions of the adult games you have set up.
