ALL AROUND BILLINGS

WELCOME TO DOWNTOWN BILLINGS “This is Downtown Billings.” We use that phrase frequently, and with a lot of pride. But what does it really mean? For us, it is not a casual statement, it is an invitation to enjoy the best Downtown Billings has to offer. It’s art. It’s culture. It’s exceptional retail and dining. It’s a summer concert series, the largest ArtWalk in the state, 12 weeks and 5 blocks of Farmers Market, home-spun festivals and feasts; it’s Montana Fair. It’s indie theater, innovative coffee shops, home-made ice cream, boutique, antique and vintage shops,

and award-winning tap houses and distilleries. It’s baseball, an award-winning, a state-of-theart library; it’s farm-to-table, a children’s museum and so much more. And every bit of it is filled with good people, from the people that run the businesses to the people that frequent them. They might just be the best part of this city, and they are the Downtown Billings Association. They invite you into their establishments; you’ll love the personalized service you receive in downtown Billings. In this downtown edition of

the All Around Billings Directory, you’ll find our member businesses listed and all the information you need to enjoy your experience in Downtown Billings! So, join us for a day, for an extended visit, or for a lifetime. We’re so glad you’re here.

ARTWALK

Friday night event showcases local, regional artists ArtWalk Downtown Billings opened its 22nd Season with its Spring ArtWalk on Friday, May 6, 2016 from 5 - 9 p.m. Over three dozen art galleries, studios, museums, non-profit organizations and other venues welcome visitors to meet local and regional artists, view their work, hear artists tell their stories, purchase art, greet like-minded people and celebrate the creative spirit that thrives in downtown Billings. Events scheduled for the remainder of the 22nd Season include the Summer ArtWalk on August 5, Autumn ArtWalk on October 7, Holiday ArtWalk on December 2, 2016 and Winter ArtWalk on February 3, 2017 (first Fridays of the months noted). Many venues offer live music and light refreshments. Metered on-street parking and downtown city garage parking are free during ArtWalk. There is no charge to attend ArtWalk events, although interactive art activities may include a modest materials fee. ArtWalk began in 1994 when a small, visionary group of artists and gallery owners on Montana Avenue opened their doors on Friday evenings during the year to welcome art aficionados, share a beverage, talk about and purchase art. Over the years, the event has captured the imagination of Billings residents and visitors. We see newcomers, visitors, groups of friends, couples and family groups of all ages. These days, some locations are standing room only,

“Flores Rosa” by Robert Tompkins showing at Tompkins Fine Art including the Toucan Gallery, affectionately known as the “birthplace of the Billings ArtWalk.” Mother Nature usually looks kindly on ArtWalk and sends us balmy weather, no matter the season. However, in some years, ArtWalk winter temperatures have dipped to -20 below. Not to worry! ArtWalk is weather resistant; its artists and patrons are hearty folks. Once the Season dates are set, ArtWalk events are not cancelled. Challenging the weather becomes part of the fun! In 2014, ArtWalk formalized a working agreement with the Downtown Billings Alliance to strengthen and add structure to the event, although it is still a member-led organization. Artists across Montana and northern Wyoming look to the Billings ArtWalk as a destination where their work can be discovered by a new audience and where they can reconnect with old friends.

YELLOWSTONE VALLEY FARMERS’ MARKET

Saturday morning Farmers’ Market returns July 16 The area under Skypoint will again be buzzing with vendors and customers alike between the hours of 8 a.m. and noon each Saturday this summer. The Farmers’ Market returns to downtown Billings on Saturday, July 16 and continues through October 1. The Farmers’ Market is a mix of outdoor shopping with unique one-of-a-kind goods. Local vendors and area farmers offer baked goods, prepared foods and fresh fruits and vegetables. Not solely limited to large farmers, a neighborhood table is available for people with garden goods to sell. Those interested in obtaining booth space at either event may call the Yellowstone Valley Farmers’ Market at 406-855-1299 or 406-697-5295. Visit their website at www.yvfm.org, or find them on Facebook by searching “Yellowstone Valley Farmers Market.”

PUBLIC ART

DBA Public Art Committee brightens up downtown The Downtown Billings Alliance’s Public Art Committee launched the Traffic Signal Box Wrap Program in 2013. This program is primarily funded by the City of Billings and has completed 11 traffic signal boxes wraps so far, each featuring images of original works of art. The art is selected from chosen local and regional artists’ and is digitally transferred to a vinyl overlay and professionally wrapped around each signal box. The vinyl wrap is sustainable in the elements and has anti-graffiti qualities that allow it to be cleaned very easily. The Public Art Committee is currently working on a Native American Heritage mural project for the Best Western Plus Clock Tower Inn parking garage wall facing 2nd Ave. N. The hope is to see the large-scale mural completed this summer, which is considered a legacy piece for the community of Billings. The Public Art Committee has collaborated on other initiatives downtown, including a summer piano installation under Skypoint for public use, the sidewalk mural event Chalk on the Walk, the mural on 29th street next to Limber Tree Yoga studio, and “Art Alley” next to Good Earth Market. Downtown Night will be Monday, July 18th at 7:05 pm as the Billings Mustangs play the Orem Owlz.

Dehler Park to host Downtown Night at the Mustangs Downtown Billings’ longest running event, Downtown Night at the Mustangs, takes place this year on Monday, July 18th at 7:05 pm. The DBA sponsors this particular game and invites the whole downtown community to come out to the ol’ ball game. We invite our downtown merchant members to get involved by participating in a cooperative advertising opportunity that creates public awareness for their business. The merchant can donate an item to be given away during the baseball game. Their business name and giveaway item will be publicly announced in the stadium throughout the night and will also be mentioned on the broadcasting stations. To thank participating merchants, the DBA offers tickets to the game! Come celebrate the season with us and cheer on your Billings Mustangs as they take on the Orem Owlz! Tickets can be purchased at the Dehler Park ticket office or by going to www.billingsmustangs.com and clicking on tickets.

SPARE CHANGE FOR REAL CHANGE

Program continues to bridge gap between city, public efforts Spare Change for Real Change was created to bridge the gap between the city’s concerted efforts to impact homelessness and alleviate poverty, and the public’s participation in those efforts. Through education campaigns and providing an alternative to giving money, Spare Change for Real Change has become an effective program in the fight! Spare Change for Real Change is Downtown Billings’ nonprofit education, awareness, and granting program that works to end the cycles of homelessness, poverty, and addiction in Billings. To date, SCRC has been able to grant close to $80,000 towards very effective and focused work concerning those issues. Right now, they are dedicating the majority of their funds toward the Motivated Addictions Alternative Program (MAAP), which includes securing the position of the Resource Outreach Coordinator. The Purple 5K is the biggest fundraiser for Spare Change for Real Change, and this year’s 7th annual event grew by 112 for a total of 582 participants compared to last year’s 470.

COMMUNITY INNOVATIONS

Downtown Billings sees vast improvements through new inititiatives Back in 2014, a Community Innovations Summit was hosted by the Downtown Billings Alliance (DBA) and the City of Billings to address the issues of chronic inebriation, an increase in street disorder, and transiency affecting the city, and in particular, downtown Billings. The two day summit, which showcased national best practices, was data-driven and solution-oriented. The summit was a success, hosting over 300 civic leaders, city and government officials, business owners, and members of the community on Day 1. Over 100 people attended on Day 2, a day designed for working group formation and sharing. These working groups formed the Community Innovations Team who continue to meet monthly. A website was created for the initiatives, hosted and managed by the Downtown Billings Alliance, and staff has been assigned to the ongoing initiative. The Community Innovations Team, drawing on leadership from the business community, the social service sector, city government and officials, law enforcement, tribal leaders, and the faith community, continues to drive change through creation of 5 working task forces, implementation of comprehensive, downtown community policing program, and a continuum of care where the cornerstone is cultural awareness and sensitivity in counseling and treatment, while intersecting vulnerable populations with resources and alternatives to cyclical, addictive, or negative behavior.

COURTESY OF MEL BARBOUR

Officers Lennick and Nichols, together with Resource Outreach Coordinator, Joel Simpson, comprise the Downtown Outreach Team that assist at-risk and addicted individuals in the downtown district. One of the most impressive milestones to date is the hire of a mobile case-worker who works in collaboration with the Downtown Resource Officers in approaching at-risk and addicted individuals in the downtown district. Since the inception of the Community Innovations Initiative, the City of Billings saw in 2015 a 42% reduction in open container

BATTLE OF THE PLANS

Battle of the Plans inspires local entrepreneurs

COURTESY OF DBA

The Downtown Billings Alliance is excited to foster and support the entrepreneurial spirit in pursuing great businesses in the heart of Billings. One of the ways we’ve done so is through the Battle of the Plans business plan competition launched in February, 2016. In the preliminary call for proposals, 40 business proposals were submitted full of great ideas for downtown! These proposals will move through a selection committee process, receive training and support, and will be asked to develop complete business plans to be submitted in September. While a number of awards apply, the grand prize winner of the Battle of the Plans will receive a full year of rent paid to open their business in downtown, a full marketing and design package, advertising, and membership to the 3 economic development organizations in Billings, the Downtown Billings Alliance, the Big Sky EDA, and the Billings Chamber of Commerce. Downtown Billings is a growing and thriving community full of creative and invested individuals and businesses, and that collective effort is only furthered by the introduction of new business. Congratulations to all of the participant in the Battle of the Plans!
