Mother’s Day weekend & Downtown Billings:
The perfect combo
By Brenda Maas • bmaas@billingsgazette.com Mother’s Day really should be called Mother’s Day Weekend—after-all, the celebration really lasts more than a day. With activities, entertainment, shopping and extensive dining, downtown Billings is the perfect place for Mom and the entire entourage.
Ready-set-go!
Kick off the weekend with a sip of Billings at the new martini bar, Doc Harper’s. Mom will certainly appreciate the chance to relax in the chic atmosphere. TIP: Sit at the front window for great “people watching” or try the upstairs lounge for more privacy. Or, give mom a real taste of the town by visiting Trailhead Spirits or one of the several local brewhouses for a quick sample. Try: Yellowstone Valley Brewing (The Garage), Carter’s Brweing, Angry Hank’s, Montana Brewing Company (Brew Pub), Überbrew or Himmelberger. TIP: Unless the establishment has a food license (like Überbrew and the Brew Pub), tasting rooms are limited to two drinks per person and do not offer food (well, unless you count popcorn or peanuts). Afterward, head home to rest up because Mom has a race to run (or walk) in the morning.

More than a race
For more than 30 years, the Montana Women’s Run has celebrated women, family and friends along with healthy living. The run is centered in downtown Billings.
For more than 30 years, the Montana Women’s Run has been an annual tradition for thousands of Billings-area moms, grandmothers, aunts, daughters and friends. This cross-generational event benefits multiple local women’s organizations while promoting health and fitness for all. But the real fun lies in the camaraderie of women. Ladies run, walk, stroll or even use their wheelchair to complete a 2-mile or 5-mile course, no matter what the weather. Although the much-anticipated design changes each year, each participant receives a long-sleeve T-shirt and the downtown streets morph into a sea of color with more than 8,000 women. They are laughing, smiling and enjoying kinship, united to celebrate health and wellness, friendship and family. TIP: Register online at www.womensrun.org before May 1 to receive a Tshirt. On race day, dress in layers because the spring mornings often warm up as the day wears on.

Kiss me, I’m Irish. Well, at least for the day. Each year on March 17, the Irish and the Irish-at-heart across the globe observe St. Patrick’s Day. What began as a religious feast day for the patron saint of Ireland has become an international festival celebrating Irish heritage with parades, dancing, special food and lots of green (hiccup) beer. St. Patrick’s Day falls during the workweek this year, but downtown Billings has responded with a full slate of cheerful activity during Saturday, March 14. So grab your kids, your buds (and your green) and head downtown to explore the luck of the Irish.

By Allyn Hulteng ahulteng@billingsgazette.com When the work day winds down, the city revs up – and not just on Fridays. Once a sleepy district that shuttered after 5 p.m., downtown Billings is now a vibrant place to work, play and live. “We’ve become a true 24/7 downtown,” said Lisa Harmon, executive director of the Downtown Billings Association. In addition to playing host to hundreds of daytime workers, the city’s center is dotted with hip boutiques, tantalizing eateries and a swell of entertainment venues. Legendary western hospitality blended along with avant guard entrepreneurs has created a oneof-a-kind experience – and people are taking note.
Commons 1882, located at 404 N. 30th St., has received rave reviews for its locally-sourced lunches and dinners.
Something for everyone Part of what makes downtown so enticing is the diversity of things to see and do – all within easy walking distance. From opera to folk music and Broadway to local improv – entertainment options abound. But you don’t have to go to a theater to find the fun. There are plenty of festivals, street fairs and special events throughout every season. One such event has grown exponentially in popularity. ArtWalk has become a signature downtown event. Held the first Friday of each month, more than two dozen galleries open their doors in the evening to show-

Urban living
One of the secrets to the success of downtown Billings is having the right mix of elements. Business professionals have abundant options for office space. They also have easy access to lunch spots plus services such as dry cleaning, banks and shopping. After work, the city transforms into a destination for theater, dining and special events. Recently, the DBA began focusing on growing the amount of residential space in the city’s core. “There’s a trend taking place in which more people want to live downtown,” Harmon noted. Fueled by Boomers who want to downsize and simplify, and Millennials choosing walkability over commuting, downtown living is emerging as a sought-after option. “For many, the urban lifestyle is attractive. That is certainly true here in Billings,” Harmon said.
Take a second look
For those who haven’t ventured downtown recently, a pleasant surprise awaits. Tucked in and around the avenues, intriguing new storefronts featuring unique goods and services are waiting to be discovered. Names like “MAd Cupcakes,” “Meow Boutique & Salon” and “Doc Harper’s” hint at the inspired goods inside. “There are so many new things to experience – it’s unparalleled in Montana,” said Harmon. “It’s such an exciting time. We want everyone to see what downtown has to offer.”

case incredible talent. And don’t be surprised if you spot local artists mingling with the crowd – there’s no pretentiousness here. During the event, the DBA provides free shuttle service transporting art enthusiasts to outlying galleries and back again, making it easy to visit every showroom. “The shuttle now has four loops – the historic loop, skypoint loop, downtown loop and uptown loop. That’s how far-reaching the galleries have become,” noted Harmon.

For a little zest and a lot of flavor, try the “It’s Greek to Me” salad at Good Earth Market. Feta cheese, red onion, olives, cucumbers and tomatoes marry to create a tasty—yet filling— entrée. Feeling more traditional? That’s OK, too—they have a fantastic salad bar stocked with farm-fresh produce.
No finer flavor has crossed your lips. The fajitas, available in either chicken or beef, arrive at your table sizzling with Mexican-infused flavors and topped with bell peppers, tomatoes, onions, cilantro and freshly-squeezed lime. Ole’!
This spring “get your Irish on” at Pug’s. Try the legendary, bigger-than-your-plate pork chop sandwich. “It’s my sainted mother’s recipe for pork chops,” said owner Bill MacIntyre and customers rate it as the “world’s best.”

Dueling shrimp are the perfect beginning to a delicious dinner. This is battle of two shrimps that Bubba Gump never spoke about: coconut-glazed versus firecracker aioli and served with orange carrot cilantro slaw. Yes, we do have a winner.
Take it “to go!” Few flavors compare to the rich, smooth taste of Sumatra coffee, roasted right here. Buy the beans for the next best thing to being there.

The cinnamon rolls are legendary, but so is the rest of Stella’s fantastic breakfast menu. Grab your girlfriends for breakfast or brunch and try some strudel, made fresh daily in flavors like triple berry and key lime. For something heartier, order a Kolache, Stella’s signature breakfast Stromboli with egg, sausage and cheese. Yum!
Another sure sign of spring: The Rex’s turkey cobb salad. Tossed with savory blue cheese crumbles, bacon, tomatoes and lettuce, cheese, you can customize the size to your appetite. Pair it with a cup of soup on a cool day, or take it to the patio to enjoy under the sunshine during late spring.

Art Auction 47
The Yellowstone Art Museum’s Art Auction was the region’s first, and continues to be the area’s finest, auction of contemporary regional art. It’s the place to be, plus an exceptional way to support regional artists. The Yellowstone Art Museum (YAM) celebrates its 47th annual Art Auction on Saturday, March 7. All are welcome! The event will be held at the Museum located at 401 N. 27th St., Billings. The outstanding exhibition opened to the public on January 22 and will culminate the night of the event, which includes a silent auction, live auction, “Quick Draw” and cocktails with heavy hors d’oeuvres. It all takes place within the beautiful background created by the museum’s spacious galleries and striking displays. The gathering begins at 5 p.m. and features fine food by Thomas Nelson Catering. The Live Auction bidding begins at 7:30 p.m. and will include a raffle drawing for exquisite jewelry donated by Montague’s Jewelers. Advance tickets to the Art Auction event are $95 per person and $105 at the door. Raffle tickets may be purchased separately and the ticket holder need not be present to win. Buyers can guarantee their favorite piece in the silent auction with the “Buy-It-Now” option. Noon tours of the exhibition will be available to the public February 11 and 25 from 12 - 1 p.m. These tours are free to museum members or included with museum admission. The annual Art Auction is the YAM’s most significant fundraising event, generating proceeds in support of exhibitions and educational programming for the entire year. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.artmuseum.org.

We invite you to join us as we celebrate our 17th year featuring historic homes throughout some of Billings’ most beautiful neighborhoods. On Saturday, May 16, the public will have the rare opportunity to view five beautiful historic homes. Wine & Food Festival 2015
For 23 years, regional wine and food enthusiasts have gathered to celebrate their support of Montana State University Billings. The 2015 Wine & Food Festival promises to be another banner year of fun and frivolity to raise funds for university programs and scholarships. Since 1968, the MSU Billings Foundation has promoted educational opportunities, community partnerships and philanthropic work through fundraising events like the Wine & Food Festival. This year the event runs May 11-16 and includes wine studies, cooking classes, dinner parings and, of course, wine under the big tent. 2015 Festival Winemasters, Joe Shebl of Redwood Winery and Tyler Tennyson of Gordon Estate, are sure to impress as they share their vintage knowledge. Foodies and vino-lovers should not miss this event. For more information, a comprehensive list of events or to buy tickets, see www.winefoodfestival.com or call (406) 657-2244.

Downtown Billings has been part of Mother’s Day traditions for decades. From shopping for gifts and perusing flowers to attending church and treating mom or grandmother to brunch, the heart of the city plays a key role in the annual celebration.
