On behalf of the dedicated team that lives the mission of the Downtown Billings Alliance, including our two Billings Police Department Resource Officers, greetings and thank you for supporting a vibrant, clean, safe and growing city center, Downtown Billings. In looking back over the nine years I have worked for downtown Billings, the recurrent theme for every good and successful initiative or campaign that we have achieved has been brokered through successful partnerships. And so for nine years, I’ve been honored to work with the best: the City of Billings, Billings City Council, Billings Police Department, Yellowstone County Commission, Downtown Property Owners, the membership of the Association, Parking Advisory Board, Big Sky Economic Development, Faith Leaders, Billings Cultural Partners, and many more. Together we continue to create what I think is one of the most significant transformations and growth opportunities Billings has ever seen. As always, in order to ensure success, the most senior public officials must be willing to be actively involved, and they are. In 2014 the Alliance kicked off the renewal campaign for the Business Improvement District. To go back through my documents and photos and see the BID in its infancy, and then to see the amount of progress and the difference that our stakeholders have made in downtown is quite staggering. I am just so proud of the program and confident that there will be so much more to come. Billings Public Library has what’s needed for Brain Power. And what better way to use it than the “Food for Thought, An Evening of Great Conversation” fundraiser sponsored by the Parmly Billings Library Foundation. The evening begins with 6 p.m. check-in and social hour on the first floor of the library. At 7 p.m. activities move upstairs for dinner and conversation with questions like “What makes a city ‘livable’ and why does that matter?” Tickets are $75 each. The 4th annual Montana Brews & BBQs will take place in the beautiful Lakeside setting at MetraPark. What makes this a true “Brewfest” is that it is outdoors and features only keg beers from Montana. Kegs are used because it offers the purest and freshest beer. All of the local breweries will be there along with many others from across the state. Many of the breweries will showcase seasonal brews typically not available year-round. Admission is free. July 12, 1 to 11 p.m. MetraPark

Dirty Dash Getting down and dirty was never more fun. The Dirty Dash is a fun run with a twist. Participants wind through a muddied course littered with obstacles, and taking time to wallow in the mire is expected. Alive After
Alive After 5 has been bringing friends together for a good time for the last eight years. As part of the Downtown Billings Association’s mission to infuse culture, fun and interest back into our fair city, Alive After 5 (or AA5 as it’s known to regulars) continues to rock on. For thirteen Thursdays this summer, starting June 5, attendees can take in the free event, which features local and regional musical talent, delicious eats and cool beverages from area vendors. A different downtown venue plays host to AA5 each week, spreading around the fun and cheer. Although admission is free, attendees do have to pony up for drinks and food.

Although only attendees who are older than 21 can partake in drinking alcohol, music enthusiasts young and old are encouraged to attend the events. Some people have to sing for their supper. At Crazy Mary’s Fish ‘n Chips, likely you will hear singing with your supper. Owner, Mary Jackson has been known to belt out in song as she cooks, with a preference toward Janis Joplin’s Me and Bobby McGee. “I’m rude, obnoxious and belligerent as hell, but sometimes my customers sing with me,” she laughs about her non-traditional atmosphere. Jackson is no stranger to the kitchen. She has owned her own restaurant before opening the doors to Crazy Mary’s in January, 2014 on a shoestring budget. The environment is family-friendly environment, with no alcohol, and

Jackson encourages her customers to feel right at home. She even spoils the kids with fruit rollups, cookies and a free reign to doodle on the windows. And then there’s the fish. Jackson has fresh fish brought in daily, sometimes twice a day. In land-locked Montana that’s no small feat. “I can’t get fresh fish on Saturday, that’s why I’m only open Monday through Friday.”

Ca-Layla, a children’s boutique in downtown Billings, offers unique gifts, toys, layette and clothes to size six for children and mothers.

Boutique equals unique and Ca-Layla (pronounced kaa-lay-la) in the heart of downtown Billings is no exception. Now in its second year, Ca-Layla caters to moms-to-be, grandmothers and mothers of young children—and, those looking for a truly one-of-a-kind gift. Owner Tina Stinson grew Ca-Layla out of her photography business, which started with her two daughters, Calli and Layla (the store’s namesakes). Originally, Stinson offered clothing and unique accessories for her photography clients. However, after she relocated her studio to the Broadway location, Stinson was able to expand into a second business. “I wanted really great photos of my daughter but no one offered what I was looking for; it wasn’t what my baby resembled to me,” noted Stinson of her grassroots start in photography. “But the boutique is something I’ve always wanted to do.” Ca-Layla offers trendy, often earthy and artistic layette and clothing items up to age six, toys, accessories and special “Mom” items. Most of the “to die for” items at Ca-Layla are not found anywhere else in Billings, much less in Montana. “Most everything we carry is unique, we get lots of compliments on our boys’ clothing because it’s trendy and chic,” noted Stinson, pointing out that many are earth- and community-friendly, too, like handbags made of reclaimed canvas and leather. Almost all are also logical and functional. For example, the popular “chew beads” is a necklace for Mom that baby can chew on without harming the necklace or herself. In the back of store, separated by barn doors, lies Stinson’s photography studio where she specializes in photographing babies, families and graduating girls. Stinson adores her downtown location and finds that her clients do, too. “Once people get downtown, they see how much is going on,” she said. “They can get a coffee, see some art and go shopping, all within walking distance.”

Refined. Elegant. Unique. Belle en Blanc, the new bridal boutique in the heart of downtown Billings, is all that and more. Owner Taryn Reitz experienced, first-hand, the area’s need for an upscale bridal shopping experience when she accompanied her sister during her quest for a wedding gown. She designed Belle en Blanc precisely to meet that need. “We focus on making the bride feel special; the day really is all about her,” Reitz explained. “The entire experience is custom, quiet and enjoyable for her and those close to her.” While customers may come in to browse, Reitz dedicates a two-hour time slot to each bride. The appointment includes champagne, personal attention and privacy, all within a unique setting. Located in the historic Babcock Building, Belle en Blanc takes advantage of the vintage building with plenty of space, enhancing the “less is more concept” by letting each dress, each bride-to-be to speak for themselves.
Reitz, who was raised in Montana and has only one employee, believes that each bride deserves one-on-one attention and an opportunity to see, feel, try on and simply be with a gown. Travel a bit, learn a lot, then come home— and it bring it with you to share. Kelly Buchanan Ewing, co-owner of Catherine Lane Interiors, believes that makes for a great recipe. Opened in February of 2014, the interior decorating business is an extension of the Catherine Lane in Livingston and the former Bozeman location. Ewing, who has been in the business for 12 years, knows that Billings’ residents love making their homes beautiful. “By walking in here, you know that we are a design firm, but you can touch, and see, and smell the products. Plus, we are not just limited to what is on the floor, we have access to so much more.” Ewing emphasizes that Catherine Lane carries a wide range of products. “We really are more than a design store,” Ewing added. “We offer furniture, accessories and gifts along with an enticing selection of unusual jewelry. Don’t let the design element intimidate you.” And Ewing, herself, is far from that. As a Billings native and mother, she knows that home really does matter and that not one style fits all. Catherine Lane Interiors offers an eclectic array of home furnishings, from the classic leather club chair to an edgy vase that makes your friend squeal, “Where did you get that?!” and everything inbetween. Ewing also appreciates clients who just stop in to see what’s new, what colors are trending and are maybe, casually looking for that one piece that inspires them. In addition, she has four fryers, so the batters remain separated. “The french fries taste like french fries, not fish,” Jackson added. Word-of-mouth has folks streaming in and Jackson delights. “Sometimes it takes a bit of time, but I make everything fresh to order.” Most popular menu items include the one-pound haddock and the fish tacos with mango salsa. “It’s a secret, but I actually put fish in them,” she jokes. The menu expands to shrimp, scallops, chowder and numerous other sea-faring delectables. One Facebook post reads, “I’ve been to Mexico and had freshcaught fish tacos. This was better by a mile.” The restaurant is open Monday – Friday, 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. but if there are still cars in the parking lot, I’ll keep the lights on, Jackson noted. In addition, she hosts fund-raising events on designated Saturdays.

Kick off Father’s Day weekend by participating in the 35th annual Heart and Sole Run to be held on June 14 in downtown Billings. With a focus on living a healthy lifestyle, seasoned runners and casual participants can enter the 5 or 10K run or the 2-mile Health Walk. The race starts at 8 a.m. in front of St. Vincent Healthcare. This year the race will once again conclude at Dehler Park where the festivities continue. From 8 a.m. until noon, the Montana Active Life Festival takes place in Dehler Park. Sponsored by St. Vincent Healthcare and Billings Gazette Communications, the family-friendly festival will feature interactive games and activities sure to get the little ones off and running. In addition, more than 50 vendors will help you “wake up your life” by showcasing great summer activities and healthy life choices. Admission to the festival is free and open to the public. Billings Clinic Classic
Grammy winner, singer-songwriter and country-western superstar LeAnn Rimes will headline the Billings Clinic Classic’s signature evening event this year, held Saturday, August 23. Prior to her performance, patrons can enjoy sumptuous hors d’oeuvres paired with specially selected wines during a street party under the stars. After the show, attendees return to the street to dance to live music under the stars, weather permitting. This is the 31st year for the Billings Clinic Classic, a fundraising event organized by the Billings Clinic Foundation.
