Art House Cinema & Pub: Build It, and They Will Come By Brenda Maas bmaas@billingsgazette.com
It’s the “Field of Dreams” of Billings. The Art House Cinema & Pub opened in March at 109 N. 30th St. in a renovated bowling alley. The intimate theater features independent and foreign films, documentaries and other special screenings. Matt Blakeslee, Billings native and Senior High graduate, knew that non-mainstream films were hard to come by locally.

(Top) The Art House and Cinema & Pub is located at 109 N. 30th St. A typical week (open Wednesday-Saturday) will include a documentary (one showing) sandwiched by the feature film (two showings). (Left) Matt Blakeslee, left, and manager Ryan Kabeary, are pleasantly pleased with the business’ reception.
“I have always enjoyed film. Independent films and documentaries are continuing to grow in our culture,” he said. “I would watch trailers online and then be let-down because I couldn’t see the whole film.” About two years ago, Blakeslee was at a crossroad in his life; he decided to make his dream happen.
Culture club
The cinema, which seats 80 occupants comfortably, is something of a novelty—a perfect complement to the burgeoning cultural scene in downtown Billings. The traditional Alberta Bair Theater, along with the community stages of NOVA Center for the Performing Arts and Billings Studio Theatre, plus the emerging Babcock Theatre and new Pub Station offer a plethora of entertainment options in Montana’s largest city. With the exception of BST, all are within walking distance of each other and many dining establishments. The entire premise is reflected by the sign: Film + Art = Culture. “Our belief is great art stirs great conversations,” Blakeslee said. “We are seeing some folks arrive early and enjoy a beer or glass of wine.” Currently, the Art House Cinema offers beer, wine, soft drinks, popcorn, nuts and candy. Future plans include expanding the theater so that the existing space will be more of a foyer—a place for filmgoers to discuss the film after the showing. That conversation, that exchange of thoughts and opinions, noted Blakeslee, is what Art House Cinema is all about. Or, he encourages patrons to enjoy a nice dinner downtown and discuss what they viewed.

Blakeslee noted that patrons are more gracious than he anticipated. We are still tweaking some things but we hear nothing but positives,” he said. “I greet customers and thank them for coming. They say, ‘No, thank YOU, for bringing this to Billings,’ It’s pretty amazing.” Kabeary keeps the website and Facebook upto-date with current and upcoming films, including a link to summaries and reviews. A typical week (open Wednesday-Saturday) will include a documentary (one showing) sandwiched by the feature film (two showings). back from viewers. In addition, film buffs can also request films in person at the cinema or via the website. “This is all about relationships and community,” noted Blakeslee. Plus, a measure of fun. Blakeslee is sure of one thing: The people of Billings have really been looking for a venue like this. It wasn’t built in a cornfield, but then again, not all dreams are created equal.

Treat your taste buds to something extraordinary. Don Luis’ diverse menu is full of tasty options, but one of the shining stars is the molcajete de Mexico (available in grilled carne asada, chicken, fish, bacon-wrapped shrimp and bacon-wrapped scallops.) Cooked in a stone molcajete, the traditional method enhances the natural flavors and aromas in the food.
Located in the heart of Billings’ downtown historic district, The Rex offers fine dining and spirits. With an extensive menu ranging from soups and salads, to sandwiches, to steaks, it may be difficult to choose. Be sure to ask your server about their featured summer salad, and dine on the patio for added enjoyment.

The Weft of Time: Border to Border
The concept of time can appear as an allegorical, physical, or conceptual element in the creation of artwork. This exhibition is made possible through the generous support from museum members. Art in Action
The YAM unveils the first in an ongoing series of crowd-sourced exhibitions and new communityoriented experiences that will take place throughout the museum. These audience participatory “actions”
are inspired by art concepts presented in other galleries. We provide the starting point and materials for a creative exploration, while visitors combine their efforts over time to create and present art directly on the museum’s walls. The inaugural event is inspired by the Jazz portraits of Adolf Dehn, on view in The Other Side of Midnight, and by Henri Matisse’s paper collages that were commissioned for the book Jazz, published in 1947. Date & Time: Exhibit on display thru September 27 Location: YAM Tickets: Call YAM at (406) 256-6804 or see artmuseum.org
The Botanical Series: Photographs by Gerald Lang and Jennifer Anne Tucker
The Botanical Series: Photographs by Gerald Lang and Jennifer Anne Tucker illustrates the crossover of art and science. For centuries botanical prints and drawings have been used as keys for identification of plant species. In The Studio at Hill Crystal Farm, Lang and Tucker updated the concept to produce images of surprising clarity and beauty using scanner photography and archival printing. Montana Gallery. This exhibition is on loan from the University of Wyoming. Billings Clinic Classic
Get ready to “Jump” out of your seats with excitement—the Pointer Sisters will be headlining the Billings Clinic Classic’s signature evening event this year, held Saturday, August 29. In its 32nd year, the Billings Clinic Classic is the signature fundraising event for the Billings Clinic Foundation. Proceeds from this year’s Billings Clinic Classic will benefit the Billings Clinic Internal Medicine Residency, the only residency of its kind in Montana. The Foundation is excited about this year’s entertainment lineup, which features something for everyone. The Pointer Sisters have achieved worldwide fame and have secured a place in pop music history as a dynamic female group. The energetic female vocalists are well known for their classic mega hits “I’m So Excited,” “Jump (for my love),” and “Slow Hand.” In addition to the Pointer Sisters (and back by popular demand) the pop quartet Under the Street Lamp will perform at the post-headline concert street party. With the mantra “Retro never sounded so now,” their tight harmonies and slick dance moves will take you back to an era of sharkskin suits, flashy cars and martini shakers. Tickets to the can’t-miss event can be purchased by calling (406) 657-4670 or by visiting the Billings Clinic Foundation at 2917 10th Ave. N. Classic tickets range in price from $80$160. The $160 ticket includes a pre-concert street party with heavy hors d’oeuvres and hosted refreshments, The Pointer Sisters concert and a post-concert party, featuring Under the Street Lamp along with The Bucky Beaver Ground Grippers, with desserts and dancing to live music. The $80 tickets include the concert and post-concert event. For more information, call (406) 657-4670 or log on to billingsclinic. com/foundation/events/classic.
