Seasonal Events Relighting the Community Christmas Tree Prior to the start of the Holiday Parade, the Community Christmas Tree will be lit in Community Park, across from Billings Central Catholic High School. The Billings Garden Club planted the tree in 1931 as a gift to the city. Although it was dark for 75 years, the tree is once again lit throughout the holiday season. Nov. 29, 6 p.m. Community Park

Annual Holiday Parade
For the 29th year in a row, downtown Billings will kick off the start of the Christmas season with the Holiday Parade. With approximately 100 entries, the festive floats, holiday music and sparkling lights at night make this parade a fun event for all. This year’s theme, “A Christmas Story” is sure to produce creative entries with Santa as the finale. The parade starts at 3rd Ave. and 26th St.; south on 32nd St.; then turns East on 2nd Ave. N., wrapping up in front of the new Federal Courthouse. Arrive early for best viewing, bring cocoa—or purchase from the downtown merchants— dress warm and plan to make an evening of it in downtown Billings. Nov. 29, 7 p.m. Downtown Billings

Magic abounds at the Moss Mansion with 17 trees decorated by local non-profit organizations. Guests are invited to tour the mansion and vote for their favorite tree with the winning organizations receiving a $150 cash prize for “People’s Choice” and “Best Theme Interpretation.” Visitors will be astonished with the sights of this year’s exciting new theme: A Fairytale Christmas. Tours are $10 for adults; $7 for seniors and military personnel; $6 for students ages 6-17; and children under 5 are free. Get ready—the sugarplum fairies will soon be here! This is the perfect way to kick off the holiday season. The Nutcracker, by Tchaikovsky, never grows old; it’s a classic story produced by a professional ballet company, Billings-area musicians and the most adorable pint-sized local ballerinas. The Billings Symphony Orchestra once again pairs up with the San Diego Ballet to bring this timeless story to life. Nov. 30, 7 p.m. and Dec. 1, 2 p.m. Alberta Bair Theater

Downtown Billings will be hopping the first Friday in December with ArtWalk Billings that runs concurrently with the 22nd Annual Christmas Stroll. Nearly 30 galleries and other merchants will open their doors for visitors to view local artists and their works. Most offer refreshments and snacks along with an opportunity to meet featured artists and see art demonstrations. The artWALKERSbus, which is sponsored by Walkers Grill, is a popular mode of transportation. See www.artwalkbillings.com for a complete list of participating businesses and bus stops.

Holiday Tours For those who prefer the warmth of a cozy vehicle, viewing the holiday lights may become a favored tradition. Several Billings transportation businesses offer a variety of fun ways to view area Christmas lights from the nostalgic to the unique. Call A-Limo at (406) 252-2536 to schedule a customized tour for 1-14 of your closest friends, and bring the hot cocoa. These drivers know all the best spots. Or, consider a nostalgic tour of Billings with a Christmas light trolley tour with cider or hot chocolate and cookies from Montana Fun Adventures. Tours start at 5:30, 7:15 or 9 p.m. during the month of December. For variety, try one of their Wacky Light tours. Mrs. Santa will drive you in a warm touring bus with large viewing windows that seat up to 13 people. Pack up the kids, warm up the cider and travel to decorated theme neighborhoods. Individuals may book on Tuesdays or Wednesdays for $15 per seat with a 6 or 7:30 p.m. departure. Add the private Moss Mansion Candlelight tour for an additional $12. Total Transportation brings various means of all-ground transportation tours for your group—from only one or two to a large group. SHOPPING SMALL = BIG BENEFITS Downtown Billings promotes Small Business Saturday
Real deal Merchants will offer some very attractive deals. For example, last year Bin 119 offered $3 mimosas on Small Business Saturday while Neecee’s offered complimentary refreshments and finger food to their customers. In addition, American Express will offer a special $10 credit for a $10 purchase via an American Express credit card on that day. (See sidebar for details.) Participating merchants will display a “Shop Small” logo in their store front. Katie Cline Ellis, owner of Bottega Clothing noted that downtown merchants offer a great way to kick off the Christmas shopping season. “We will offer 30
percent off our entire store that day,” she said, “and the entire weekend as incentive for people to come and support the small businesses downtown.” “We are hoping for really big numbers this year,” noted Harmon. “It’s a great way for the community to show their appreciation for the fabric that ties Billings together—the small business person.” So take a day off from long-distant parking, crowded aisles and long checkout lines to say hello to Small Business Saturday. Likely it will be the most fun and relaxing holiday shopping you experience all season.

Imagine a holiday shopping experience where you can park within 50-feet of the store you are visiting; you don’t have to push a cart through crowded aisles; there are no lines at the checkout stand; and, you are greeted by a smiling, knowledgeable sales associate who sincerely wants to help you and just you. This is not a dream. On Nov. 30 all merchants in the downtown area will celebrate the 3rd annual Small Business Saturday. “Holiday shopping in downtown Billings is a wonderful experience from the beautifully decorated store fronts to the individual, specialized customer service to the fact that your dollars spent in local stores stays in your community to benefit your community,” said Lisa Harmon, executive director of Downtown Billings. Participating merchants range from boutiques and restaurants to spas and art galleries, noted Kelly McCandless, communications manager for the Billings Chamber of Commerce. She goes on to explain that “Shop Small” is part of a nationwide program to support small businesses in each and every community. According to the SBA.gov, the small business sector is growing across the U.S. While corporate America has been downsizing, the rate of small business
start-ups has grown and the rate for small business failures has declined. Bringing that to a local level and shopping local just makes sense, noted McCandless. “In downtown Billings over 90 percent of our stores are locally or regionally-owned,” said Harmon, “so invariably when you shop local downtown you are supporting your neighbor, your friend, your family. “ Plus, keeping the dollars local is akin to moving money from your left pocket to your right. When you shop at local small businesses, you help our community grow.

Figure-eighting through an excited crowd, you gently skirt past a row of knees to land at seats E24 and E25—the destination you and your husband have been looking forward to the past two months. While sitting on the cushy, velveteen chairs, you curiously thumb through the playbill. After a few minutes, the auditorium begins to fill with an electric anticipation. The lights dim. The curtain goes up. And the magic takes hold of your heart. As the new marketing director for Alberta Bair Theater (ABT), Jody Grant is familiar with this phenomenon. “The performing arts is all about the experience—the synergy between the performers and the audience,” Grant said. “Live entertainment creates a special, unmatched kind of bond—one that can’t be duplicated.” At the helm of ABT’s marketing department for the past few weeks, Grant said she’s thrilled with the theater’s performance lineup for the fall and winter. “As a consumer of the arts, I always have my antennae up to see what interests people,” Grant said. A natural journalist, Grant enjoys watching the interaction between the performers and the crowd during a show. “It’s so special to see performers speak with the audience in a meaningful way and to witness those connections,” Grant said.
Curtain calling Grant, who is a lifelong fan of theater, various types of music, dance and the performing arts, took a “zig-zag path” to her current position. Originally from Billings, Grant attended college at the State University of New York in New Paltz, studying international relations and journalism. A passion for travel fueled her decision to go to Japan and later, the Czech Republic, to teach English. Grant later moved to Seattle, where she lived for sev-
en years until moving back to Billings in 2001. “Those experiences allowed me to grow and change a lot,” Grant said. Positions in Montana State University Billings’ University Relations office and later, the Outpost refueled her passion for public relations, marketing and journalism. Grant later purchased software to teach herself the skills required to be a graphic designer. Three years at The Billings Gazette then later, the Billings Symphony also helped groom her for her current position, she said. “I’m required to use new marketing tools for each performance in this position,” Grant said. “I love that challenge and the variety.” Sometimes the marketing landscape calls for promotion via Twitter, or Facebook or Instagram. Other times—due to the visual nature of a show—TV is the way to go. “Each show is a new riddle, a new puzzle,” Grant added.

There’s programming for the kiddos, too, like Paige in Full, a production that speaks directly to kids on the tough subject of bullying. “My job is to reach out and find the audience that fits each show,” Grant said. Working in the arts and entertainment realm, Grant admits occasionally feeling star struck. “Kris Kristofferson is an amazing, gentle, down-to-earth and humble man, on top of being ridiculously talented,” Grant said. “I love meeting people who share their gift with the world,” adding that meeting Kenny Rogers in February is going to be “really cool.”
ABT is dedicated to education and student enrichment. As such, the theater presents specially-designed matinees for students and schools at discounted prices. “These performances are not exclusive to schools,” Grant said. “They are open to the public and I would encourage anyone interested to come check them out.” The Alberta Bair also provides professional development workshops for teachers, providing practical learning opportunities that inspire educators to be better teachers. Grant and the team at ABT are always interested in visiting with business owners or members of the community interested in sponsoring a production. Show sponsorships are a way for businesses to help ensure Billings attracts the best talent and reaffirm that the performing arts are a vital part of our community, Grant said. “Entertainment, especially live entertainment transports people outside themselves, their problems, their stresses,” Grant said. “It is salve for the soul.”

As a companion program to our exhibition, Abandoned Traces, Brian Liesinger, Executive Director of the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center located southwest of Powell, Wyoming, will discuss the impact of President Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066, which led to the forced removal of all persons of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. A total of 14,025
people were interned at Heart Mountain Relocation Center, 1942 -1945, making the center the third most populated “city” in Wyoming. Only “abandoned traces” remain at the site, but the field where the camp once stood echoes with their stories. Exhibitions Hallowed Absurdities: Work by Theodore Waddell
Theodore Waddell has brought twentieth-century Modernism into the twenty-first century. He thoughtfully explores ideas about this region where he has lived and worked his entire career. Although Waddell is known primarily as a painter, he has also worked as a sculptor, and Hallowed Absurdities includes a wide range of his sculptural work. From the time of human origins, we have relied on fiction and humor to examine and come to grips with contentious ideas in our society. Humor and visual puns are part of this phenomenon, and in Hallowed Absurdities Waddell uses the physical object to critique myths, convictions and the meanings behind human choices. the Festival of Trees, now in its 28th year, is part of that tradition for many Billings families, organizations and businesses. As a major fundraiser for The Family Tree Center, the Festival provides an opportunity for community members to help prevent child abuse in Yellowstone County and surrounding areas. Over the course of four days, more than 10,000 people will pass through the doors to view uniquely decorated holiday trees and participate in a variety of activities. The Festival runs December 5-8 at the Shrine Auditorium. The event kicks off with a Gala Dinner on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. Tickets are $75 per person or $800 for a corporate table. Friday’s agenda includes special tree viewing, Tea in the Trees, public tree viewing, the ever-popular Family Fun Night and a Craft and Gift show. The Moss Mansion Historic House Museum, located at 914 Division St., still shines every holiday season with events, tours and historic elegance. Built in 1903 by P.B. Moss and his wife, Mattie, the only residents were Mr. and Mrs. Moss, their six children and three servants. The home was designed by the famous New York architect Henry Hardenbergh, who also designed the original Waldorf-Astoria, Plaza Hotel, the Dakota, Williard Hotel and Copley Hotel. Built for $105,000, when most homes averaged $3,000, it has 28 rooms, is 60-feet-square and rises 45 feet into the air. The Moss Mansion remains a cornerstone of downtown Billings today. It is operated by the Billings Preservation Society, Inc.
