Billings Food Bank

Larry Mayer of The Gazette Staff

Tony Silva moves a pallet of food at the Billings Food Bank’s warehouse. During the holiday season, the Food Bank distributes more than 15,000 additional boxes of food.

Gifting the Community Mission: To assume a leadership role in feeding the hungry by recovering, securing, purchasing, an delivering quality food and other products directly and through agencies, and playing a strong education and advocacy role on hunger-related issues: Doing all within our power to address root causes of hunger and encourage economic growth.

By Brenda Maas bmaas@billingsgazette.com

The holidays are indeed a time of giving. The Billings Food Bank, located at 2112 Fourth Ave. N. in downtown Billings, serves as Grand Central Station for the giving—the gifting—of food for anyone who needs help. According to Sheryle Shandy, executive director of the Billings Food Bank, a family in need normally receives one box (quantity to match the family’s size) per month. However, in November and December, they can receive both a Thanksgiving box that includes everything for a traditional meal plus leftovers and a Christmas box that covers 10 days of meals (designed to help feed children who would normally eat breakfast and/or lunch at the school). “During the holidays, we distribute more than double a regular month,” Shandy said. “Plus, there are others who may have managed during the year, but cannot make things stretch to cover the holiday meals.” In addition, the organization distributes 7,000 turkeys between Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. That is spread across the Thanksgiving Day meal (served at The Billings Food Bank Fortin Culinary Center and the Montana Rescue Mission), the holiday boxes and home-delivered meals via St. Vincent de Paul. With increased food needs, the Food Bank needs additional help from the community. “This is a basic needs program,” said Shandy. “Plus, we are truly an independent food bank—we are not part of Second Harvest or any other national organization. We are Billings-based.”

More time than money

While financial donations are always welcome, some want to do more than write a check. The Adopt-A-Family program, for example, allows donors to purchase new items for a single family. Essentially, the donor family can buy the adopted family’s holiday box (see sidebar on page 10 for list of items).

Sheryle Shandy has been involved with the Billings Food Bank for 33 years. She emphasized that no one should go hungry, especially during the holidays, and that Billings has always been a very giving community.

Or, by grabbing lunch at the Fortin Café, located within the Billings Food Bank, or purchasing gifts at the gift shop, you are directly supporting the food bank via the proceeds from your purchase. Local events, like the Holiday Food & Gift Show, offer reduced admission rates in exchange for a food bank donation. Those types of events produce a large number of dry-goods donations for the food bank, plus it is an easy way for individuals to help, Shandy noted.

Summer Doyle, left, and Rhonda Martin move food in the distribution area of the Billings Food Bank in late October. Between Thanksgiving and the Christmas seasons, the food bank needs 7,000 turkeys for holiday meals and distributed boxes.

Larry Mayer of The Gazette Staff

Additionally, she points to a variety of sources for volunteers. Churches have always been strong supporters, from congregations contributing goods on monthly Food Bank days, to providing labor via service projects. She also notes that local businesses contribute everything from goods and funds, to service days and food drives. “During our annual Mardi Gras celebration we have employees from Albertsons, Walmart, Wells Fargo and many, many more doing everything from running the silent auction, to setting tables for 800, to running the cash-out station,” she said. “Their contributions are invaluable.” Yet, Shandy encourages even more individuals to help however they can. Some children initiate their own food drive; some families simply volunteer one afternoon in the warehouse—sorting, boxing, distributing. “It all comes together, everyone’s hands help,” said the long-time director. She also emphasized that the Billings Food Bank has operated on a frugal budget for 33 years. Newer initiatives include a gardening operation at Oscar’s Park, which has generated more than 14,000 pounds of produce that is distributed, in season, via the boxes. She cites the garden as another volunteer opportunity, ideal for families. The Fortin Culinary Center at Billings Food Bank also offers a 12-week survey course to prepare students for careers in commercial kitchens. “In the 4-1/2 years of this program, nearly 100 percent of the students have secured a job upon graduation,” Shandy said. “This is a very strict program, and we are getting a reputation for tough love—and hard-working graduates.” While education and employment are key ingredients to fighting hunger, at the end of the day, the mission remains simple. “We believe no one should go hungry, most especially during the holidays,” Shandy said.

Wide variety of parking options make shopping in downtown Billings convenient and fun By Brittany Cremer bcremer@billingsgazette.com Parallel parking. A notion that strikes fear into the hearts of 16 year-olds (and adults) the world over. Good news, though, for parking neophytes: downtown Billings brims with a wide variety of locales to park and shop sans lining up bumpers for the super strategic maneuver. Three (count them) three parking garages are ready to serve eager shoppers and an ample supply of angled parking (still need to check that blind spot) also exists. Why do we bring this up? Well, to debunk the myth that there’s “no where to park downtown.”

Parking perception

When we head to Walmart, Target or other shopping centers, parking a country mile away is well within the realm of reason. Why? When shoppers can physically see their destination while parking—even if it’s a considerable distance away—the perception is that it’s closer.

Now, let’s take a downtown shop or boutique for example. You search for a vacant spot right in front of the store, but none are available. You circle the block for an open spot, park, but grumble about the walking distance. The truth is, in most instances, the distance just seems farther, because the view to your destination is obstructed. The next time you’re at the mall or another big box store, challenge yourself to measure the number of steps from your parking spot to your destination. Then, take a ride downtown to your favorite boutique and replicate the exercise. Chances are, those distances will be very similar.

On-street parking

While downtown visitors do have to pay for metered parking from 8 to 5 Monday through Friday, several shoppers forget that parking is free after 5 p.m. and on the weekends. Most parking meters cost $.35 per hour; however, the 10-hour meters are less per hour. The green-domed meters are $.70 per hour, and the proceeds of these are shared with downtown Billings, used for various downtown beautification projects.

Garage parking

Park 1, Billings’ first public parking garage, was built in 1977. It is located at 2912 Third Ave. N. and is free and open to the public between 5 p.m. and 5 a.m. Monday through Friday. (There is also free parking on evenings and weekends.) It has five levels with a total of 461 parking spaces. Park 1 also has a sky bridge, which connects the garage to the Hart Albin building. Park 2 is located at First Ave. N. and was completed in 1978. It contains six levels of parking and more than 900 spaces. There are two sky bridges connecting the garage to the Crowne Plaza and the Grand Building. Park 2 is open to patrons 24 hours a day, but there is no free parking at Park 2. The office is open from 7:15 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Park 3 is located adjacent City Hall at 210 N. 27th St. and is open to the public 24 hours a day. The office is open Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. It contains 273 spaces over six levels—one is underground. In Park 3, patrons may park free from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 a.m. and on weekends.

With colorful storefronts and festively decorated streets, downtown Billings transforms into a winter wonderland for holiday shoppers. By Allyn Hulteng ahulteng@billingsgazette.com I was 9 years old when we moved from a tiny North Dakota farm community to the big city of Billings. It was mid-December, and the town was awash in holiday splendor. In the heart of downtown, the Hart-Albin Company department store stood as the grande dame of retailers. Each holiday season, Fred Nelson, the store’s display designer, would create fantastical window displays complete with lights and animation. The Friday after Thanksgiving, people would stand six-deep along the sidewalk eagerly waiting for the display to be unveiled. I still remember walking into Hart-Albin for the very first time that December. It was so beau-

tiful. Everywhere I looked were stunning displays of clothes, jewelry and accessories interspersed with holiday glitz. I had never seen such an array of finery. Elegant sales ladies dressed in the latest fashion warmly greeted my mother as we strolled past the coats and dresses. Down a short flight of stairs we entered the store’s lower level, which was filled with all kinds of household goods. Bedding, small appliances, fine china, silver sets and high-end linens all attractively set out, enticing homemakers and gift givers alike. I don’t recall what my mother purchased, but I recall with great clarity the fancy manner in which it was wrapped. Glossy, bright red paper meticulously folded covered the box. On the front, the signature looped ribbon and a shiny “Hart-Albin Company” sticker.

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like…

A bird’s eye view of downtown Billings, taken from the Hart Albin Building.

Whoever the gift was for, I thought, must be someone pretty special.

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks

For nearly 90 years, Hart-Albin Company served as the flagship of downtown Billings. But in the late 1980s, shopping malls and box stores had carved deeply into the department store’s draw. By 1990, Hart-Albin closed for good. But the store left a remarkable legacy – one that would be embraced by the numerous boutiques and specialty shops that began to sprout in its place. Unique, one-of-a-kind items combined with unparalleled customer service became the downtown mantra. Today, that attentiveness and personal ap-

peal is a hallmark of the downtown Billings experience. Shoppers who frequent the galleries, shops and cozy cafes aren’t looking for a franchise-feeling moment; they appreciate the quality of an authentic Billings-exclusive experience. And they know there’s no better time to explore the downtown offerings than the holidays.

Children laughing, people passing There’s something magical about Christmas in the city. Festive holiday decorations along downtown streets signal a start to the season, while timeless traditions like the Holiday Parade and the annual Christmas Stroll bring residents together to shop and celebrate.

Even when old man winter bellows with snow and cold, festivities continue. Shoppers simply bundle up and walk hand-in-mitten-coveredhand, stopping to warm themselves in the many stores and galleries (often finding warm cocoa and treats). It’s a little like stepping into a Norman Rockwell-inspired snow globe. For many, downtown holiday shopping is more than a fun outing with friends. It’s a connection to the spirit of community. This season, make it a point to skip virtual shopping and homogeneous box stores, embracing instead the wonderful brick-and-mortar reality of your downtown. The unique brand of genuine warmth and personal attention will leave you feeling like someone pretty special.
