Seasonal Events Christmas Stroll & Holiday Parade Downtown Billings kicks off the holiday season with the annual Christmas Stroll on Nov. 27. Santa arrives at the Downtown Business Alliance (DBA) office, located at 2815 2nd Ave. N., for photos. All kids—and those who are kids at heart—are welcome to share their wish list and pose for a photo (your camera or ours for $5 donation). From 6 to 9 p.m. downtown merchants open their doors and welcome strollers with merchandise specials and good cheer. Be sure to plan a “meet up” with friends to enjoy the holiday decorations, food, fun and wine tree raffle. The atmosphere turns up a notch at 7 p.m. as the annual Christmas Parade begins on the corner of 3rd Ave. N. and N. 27th St. The parade turns south on 32nd for one block, then swinging back east along 2nd Ave. N., wrapping up at the federal courthouse.
4
With approximately 100 entries, the festive floats, holiday music and sparkling lights at night make this parade a fun event for all. This year’s theme, “A Gingerbread Christmas” is sure to produce creative entries with the arrival of Santa as the grand finale. Arrive early for best viewing, bring cocoa—or purchase a warm beverage from downtown merchants—dress warm and plan to make an evening of it in downtown Billings.

Get off the couch and head downtown By BRENDA MAAS bmaas@billingsgazette.com Downtown Billings not only lies in the heart of this Western town, it creates its heartbeat. While a workday lunch may be hectic and reflect the weekday vibe, weekends reflect this city’s other side—art, history and culture prevail as presented by galleries, museums, street art, boutiques, theaters, coffee shops, brew houses, diners and elegant evening dining locales. Weekends have their own identity: less hurried and a tad more casual with the emphasis on fun and relaxation. And here’s the best news: Downtown Billings is not shutdown on Sundays. As both the end of one week and the start of another, Sunday is the ideal day to soak in the true atmosphere of downtown—window shop, stroll the streets, grab a taste here, a sip there. Look up and wonder about the Montana Power Company building’s façade, see the Babcock Theatre’s neon marquee and recall days gone by or feel the cobblestones of Montana Avenue that touch both the past and the future. Celebrating more than 100 years of Christmas past, present and future By BRITTANY CREMER bcremer@billingsgazette.com A wisp of a snowflake fluttered to the ground. The weather had turned earlier in the month, but this was the first visible clue that the holidays were on their way. A soft blanket of the fluffy stuff followed, muffling the sounds of horse-drawn carriages normally clattering from the street. Crisp, thick air burned nostrils as the frost began collecting on the window panes. But through the crystalline layers, looky-loos could still make out a kaleidoscope of color and a soft glow of warmth. Inside, the close-knit family was sitting around the fireplace sipping cocoa, reading and chatting about the day’s musings. Interaction, not technology, ruled the day, with no Netflix in sight. Laughter erupts as the cat chases a
gray ball of yarn, fashioned to look like a mouse, across the living room floor—and then, silence. The door swings open; father is home.
Living history If P.B. Moss were to walk into his former residence at 914 Division St. today, he would likely encounter a very similar scene. With much of the original furniture, décor and fixtures still intact, the Moss Mansion remains one of our community’s most treasured historical gems. Moss built the extravagant home in 1903, and the mansion showcases inspired architecture, unrivaled craftsmanship and exquisite décor.
CASEY PAGE/Gazette Staff
Christmas items original to the Moss family were found in storage at the Moss Mansion. These items are frequently used to decorate trees on display in the museum.
13 Designed by New York architect Henry Janeway Hardenbergh (designer of the original Waldorf Astoria and Plaza Hotels) the mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has graced the silver screen on several occasions as the perfect backdrop for period films including Son of the Morning Star and Return to Lonesome Dove. Although the youngest daughter, Melville Moss, resided in the home until the mid-1980s, the house and its original fixtures remain intact. Modern day visitors marvel at the home’s amenities, which include a call button system for the servants, among other impressive feats of technology for the period. The home not only records the activities of early Billings development but also interprets the inner workings of the family through letters shared among its members.

Downtown Billings brims with excellent shopping, dining and leisure opportunities Small Business Saturday
By BRITTANY CREMER bcremer@billingsgazette.com
“City sidewalks, busy sidewalks. Dressed in holiday style In the air there’s a feeling of Christmas Children laughing, People passing, Meeting smile after smile And on every street corner you’ll hear…”
The essence of Christmas permeates the streets and boutique-style shops of downtown Billings. Written in history and held in tradition, holiday shopping is truly something worth celebrating. Enterprises like Billings’ treasured HartAlbin department store cultivated the tradi-
tion—to shop for the best, most prized gifts in a location where customers can expect the highest quality and customer service. That tradition continues at downtown stores where leisure, quality and one-on-one customer service co-exist. It’s a desirable change from the bump-and-grind of big box
Visit the Downtown Billings Association’s website (downtownbillings.com) for details on Small Business Saturday shopping. Several downtown merchants offer promotional sales and coupons just in time for Christmas. Plus, shoppers can feel good knowing they are supporting small business owners in Yellowstone County.

store retail-a-palooza. Aside from top-notch customer service, these vendors also carry merchandise that’s unique or difficult to find elsewhere in Billings. And we all have our favorite stops. But this year, don’t be shy about meandering into some of Billings’ newer shops and restaurants. One of these curious locales might just become your new Secret Santa headquarters. “You always find the most unique and special gifts,” they’ll say. And who knows, perhaps you can find a little something just for yourself along the way.

The gazing galleria Creativity looms just around the corner in downtown Billings, an area ripe with local art galleries and artists. From painting to photography, jewelry making to mixed media, Billings is truly a melting pot of talented, diverse artists willing and eager to share their passion with you. New to the art scene this year is Tambo Studio & Gallery. Here, proprietors Bob and Kit Tambo turn philanthropy into an art form with their “Art for a Cause” mission. A percentage of every piece sold at the studio helps fund infrastructure and clean water projects in third world countries. Award-winning artists from Nigeria have teamed with the Tambos to display their artwork, but shoppers will also find treasures from local artists like Rob Johnson. Or, perhaps you have a penchant for creating art yourself. If that’s the case, pop into Crooked Line Studio, located at 3330 4th Ave. N. for a “no-rules” class. The relaxed, laid-back atmosphere is perfect for letting your creativity flow, and consider picking up an art class gift card for the Van Gogh enthusiast on your shopping list.
Neecee’s, Cricket and Desmond’s, shoppers should also be sure to pop into some Billings’ newest shops. Bumps ‘n Bundles is a cheerful little alcove filled with stylish and unique children’s clothing, gifts, accessories, toys and more. Located at 219 N. Broadway, Bumps ‘n Bundles also carries a wide array of unique jewelry—much of it Montana-inspired. (The perfect special gift for any new mom.) Also new to the downtown shopping scene is Prohibition Clothiers—a premiere men’s clothing store offering fine suits, accessories—even an on-site barber shop. Just next door is Montague’s Silver, an expanded storefront to the downtown mainstay, Montague’s Jewelers. Here, shoppers will find a wide range of beautiful, high-quality giftware from trusted brands like Reed & Barton and Trend-setting style Nambe, in addition to stunning, yet affordable, In addition to proven downtown favorites like pieces of jewelry.
Dine divine Shopping is tough work. Why not reward yourself after a day of browsing with a soul-satisfying meal from one of downtown Billings’ fantastic restaurants. Craving a juicy steak? No problem. In the mood for fresh seafood? We’ve got you covered. For a change of pace, try the sweet-yet-tangy taste of Wild Ginger. New to downtown Billings’ dining scene and located at 2713 Montana Ave., Wild Ginger offers a unique menu of Asian-fusion-inspired fare in a laid-back atmosphere. For something a bit spicier, try Café Zydeco, located at 2503 Montana Ave. Their cheeky tagline “Git’ Some South in Your Mouth,” is sure to get your attention, as will the delicious, authentic jambalaya, gumbo and variety of additional delicious soups and sandwiches. Maybe a holiday cocktail or mocktail is what you desire. If that’s the case, pop into Doc Harper’s

Stunning new winter styles for men and women
When you want to relax but still look stylish, you can’t go wrong with Tommy Bahama. Try the medium-weight mock pull-over sweater.. The quarter-zip front keeps the decorative collar stitching from being too much while giving a punch of masculinity. Top it with Tommy’s weekender coat. Self-described as “perfect fit,” it encourages making life one long weekend. The polyester shell keeps the elements out while the leather shoulders give an extra sense of class. With double-access front pockets and a comfortable lining, this coat is sure to be man’s new best friend. Keep the timeless-with-a-twist-theme going with Charisma jeans from 34 Heritage. In the comfort-rise, classic style, these jeans will be a “go-to” from Day One. Available at Desmond’s Sweater: $158 Coat: $395
Jeans: $165
For that fun, flirty evening out, don the “rip & repair” skinny jeans from MiracleBody. With three-percent lycra, they are always the perfect fit. The lacetrimmed, ribbed cami by rosemund gives the right punch of “fem” to the jeans. Then top your set with a bit of glam—the black sequined jacket from
Adore, plus a long charm necklace that adds visual interest. Proceed to the party. Available at Neecee’s Necklace: $37 Cami: $90 Jacket: $115 Jeans: $130
The Stars & Stripes have mixed and so can you. Start with horizontal-striped turtleneck sweater from J’envie. It’s lightweight, yet warm, and constructed to hold its shape. Top the ensemble with the forever-style hounds tooth scarf and add the fringed hobo bag by Moda Luxe. Cricket Sweater: $184 Vest: $142 Scarf: $29 Purse: $90

The Yellowstone Art Museum launches a new exhibition series entitled Montana Masters. “A Lonely Business”: Isabelle Johnson’s Montana
The second in the Montana Masters exhibition series, this exhibition pays tribute to one of Montana’s early Modernists. Upon her death in 1992, the museum received the artist’s bequest of remaining studio works, letters, journals, and archival materials. We take this opportunity to re-examine and contextualize the work of this admirable artist, whose work captured the essence of Montana, especially during winter. This exhibition is accompanied by a new book with the same title. Date & Time: on display thru Jan 3, 2014 Location: YAM Tickets: Visit www.artmuseum.org for details

Photos from The Gazette Archive Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale has been bringing Tchaikovsky’s timeless tale, the Nutcracker Ballet, to Billings since 1978. At that time the symphony was under the direction of George Perkins and performed at the Fox Theater. In 1987 the renovated theater was renamed and re-opened as the Alberta Bair Theater. The Nutcracker remains a holiday favorite across generations of Billings residents, as does the theater, as the BSO&C continues to honor its mission “to enrich lives through music.”
