ow old is your current mattress? Really think about it. Chances are it’s older than you think, and studies show the older it is, the less quality of sleep you get. A study from Oklahoma University found people who replace their current mattress (5 years or older) improved their quality of sleep by over 64 percent. The Better Sleep Council recommends replacing your mattress every 8 years, so if you are past due, here are the top three mistakes people make when shopping for a mattress.
1. Thinking one-size-fits-all. Some places, (especially online) offer a specific mattress that fits everyone. Don’t buy it! We all come in many shapes and sizes with different sleeping positions and health needs. Having one mattress fit everyone is like one size shoe that fits everyone. How to Choose a Window Treatment Provider
C
ALL KINDS OF BLINDS
hoosing a window treatment should be fun. Window coverings from a specialized, local business can transform a house and showcase the owner’s personal sense of style. The best window treatment companies make the selection process relaxing while educating the client about each product and how it will ultimately benefit both the room and the owner’s overall lifestyle. Professional consultants take the guesswork out of selecting a treatment and color. Once the perfect product is selected, the professional can easily help narrow down the fabric to suit any budget. These are services that are simply not available from the big box stores. An expert will not only help you choose the best blinds, shades or shutters for your décor and purpose, that professional can provide

far superior service. Should you need a blind repaired, your local, family-owned company may be able to come to your home, repair the problem on the spot, replacing the blind in the window. Easy and no hassle. Your big box store won’t even come to your house to inspect the problem. A franchise headquartered in another state may remove your blind to send it off for repair and then finally replace it weeks after you’ve been stuck with nothing in your window. It’s possible to add your window treatments to your home loan if you are buying a new house. Measuring for window treatments can be a complex, time-consuming task. Precision is extremely important for the shade to function in the right way. Leaving the process of measuring to professionals ensures the proper function and fit of every treatment. You also won’t end up with gaps along the side of
your windows that can seriously reduce your privacy. The added convenience of motorization allows the purchaser to operate shades, blinds, or shutters from a chair or even a smart phone, miles away. A professional works with you and your builder to find the best motorization solutions for new construction or with the homeowner for upgrading an existing home. For a window treatment to function optimally and have the longest lifespan, proper installation is paramount. Not only does a skilled, insured installation team know how to trouble shoot any problems should they arise, they are trained and certified to make sure products are installed in the proper manner. Even what appears to be a straightforward installation can easily become a nightmare when attempted by a person without the necessary experience. By allowing a professional installation team to properly install your
project, you protect yourself, your home and your investment. In order to achieve a particular design aesthetic, work with a company that specializes in all kinds of blinds, shutters and shades. A specially trained consultant can help you, your designer or builder select products that enhance the décor and style of your project, ensuring that each product achieves the desired outcome, be it energy efficiency, privacy, insulation, design or any combination of these. A window treatment professional will help to narrow down the specific product to match both your style and budget. No aspect of interior design makes a greater impact than what the windows are wearing. A home’s design is simply not complete until the finishing touch of window treatments are in place.

How to Choose an HVAC Company A qualified professional can help prolong the life of your HVAC system. HVAC professionals prevent equipment failure by routinely servicing and maintaining your system. The breakdown of your heating or air conditioning system can be a huge nightmare—particularly during times of extreme temperature. But even in moderate weather, the HVAC system in your home is important to your comfort and safety. Most people cannot tolerate extreme temperatures. The elderly and people with chronic health problems need to have the temperature stabilized in their homes. The best HVAC contractors are helpful and reliable, but a poor contractor can cost you extra money and heartache. Ask people in your social network for recommendations. Good word of mouth will go a long way toward helping you find the best professionals in your area. After creating a list of candidates, call the Better Business Bureau, your state’s board of contractors or the builders’ association to check on their reputations. Your town’s building inspection office may also have information for you. Avoid companies who have many complaints on their record. Upon narrowing the list, call the remaining ones and ask about pricing, guarantees and warranties. Also inquire about how long it would take to complete a job and the manufacturers’ brands they use. If you are purchasing new equipment, find out if you need a separate service contractor or if routine maintenance and repairs are included in the price of installation. Does the company provide around-the-clock emergency service? High quality HVAC companies are fully licensed, bonded and insured. If a worker is injured or causes damage to your property, that in-

surance should cover it. Otherwise, you could be liable for the damages. Your insurance premiums would likely increase as a result. Reputable HVAC companies will usually belong to recognized professional and trade organizations. Some well-known organizations include the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers. Membership in one of these organizations is not automatic. Applicants are required to have certain certifications, meet professional standards and meet or exceed other requirements before they are admitted. Before any work begins, verify that all the required building permits are in place. Most companies will file permits on your behalf at the local building codes office. But don’t assume that it has happened. Check with the permitting office first. Work done without proper permits could result in a fine and time delay. Have a load calculation done before installing a new system in any building. The best companies perform a thorough calculation rather than estimate. Buildings change over time due to foundations cracking or settling. It will affect the efficiency of any equipment. The HVAC company shouldn’t use the old unit to determine the proper size of a new one. If your old unit was inadequate, you will want to install a unit that is a different size. Speak with your HVAC installer to determine the right size and model for you. Ask your HVAC contractor to perform annual checkups to verify that the unit is running at peak efficiency. With these tips, you can choose a reliable HVAC business that will help you for years to come.

How to Choose an RV
‌R
ecreational vehicles are like houses on wheels. They are more complicated and much more sophisticated than regular automobiles. They are great for fun and vacations but they are a huge investment. And investing in one is a lot more complicated than buying in a car. After talking with a dealer, many first-timers sometimes end up with more questions than answers. With some research and help from other RV owners, you can find an RV that is right for you. Your first step in purchasing an RV is to ask yourself what you would like to do in your recreational vehicle. Are you using it to travel the country? What sizes and styles do you prefer? Are you partial to purchasing a new or used RV? Consult resources to answer these questions. Use the Internet to browse RV brands and styles. There are numerous message boards for RV owners that contain useful in-

formation. The best way to learn about recreational vehicles is to speak with owners themselves. If people in your social network own an RV, ask about their vehicle. Look through the interior; examine various options so you can understand what is available. Another factor is size. If you are only planning to use it sporadically, then size might not be an issue. But if you plan on living out of the vehicle for extended periods of time, then a larger RV may be more comfortable. Some RV parks have restrictions on size, so be sure to
verify what sizes are generally acceptable. Additional features can make your ride enjoyable. Think about whether you would like a full-service kitchen or plasma TV. Choose items that would make your trip as comfortable as possible. Once you have become more acquainted with the marketplace, start visiting RV dealers. After all your research, you should be able to speak with the salespeople clearly and confidently. If you plan on purchasing a new RV, look for a dealer who offers a factory warranty. Dealers who sell used RVs should also give you a factory warranty along with a used vehicle report. Potential RV buyers don’t usually think to
ask for a used vehicle report. However, you should know the history of your used RV before purchasing it, as it could have had extensive damage. Incentives such as free upgrades or a good financing rate may be enticing, but you should always be skeptical about the deal that comes with them. Try to bring a fellow RV owner with you to the dealership. Most people are happy to share their thoughts and experiences with you. It is a good way to ensure you are getting a fair deal. The best dealers have an on-site service department or contracts with reputable RV repair shops. Some RV repairs are specialized and different from regular vehicles. You will need a service shop that will accept your warranty in the event your RV is ever damaged. With a little effort and time, you will find a fantastic deal on an RV best suited for your needs. Then, you can spend time in your vehicle enjoying the scenery.

Considering Senior Living? Begin Here THE GOODMAN GROUP
Are you or a loved one considering a move to a senior living community, but don’t quite know where to begin? If so, you’re not alone. The move to a senior living community is increasingly becoming a family decision for both personal and financial reasons.
W
hen an individual or a family makes the decision to move to a community, this is a major decision for them. The primary goal should be to find an environment that promotes resident satisfaction and happiness.
H10
Sunday, September 18, 2016
Here are some basic questions that can help your family begin to consider whether a move to senior living is the right move at this time and its impact on your life and your family: What should we expect at a senior living community?
Why is this the right move for me/us at this time? What is the lifestyle like in a senior living community? Wherever we live, would we like to have involvement with friends and socialize? What activities do we want to engage in? Are we living purposeful lives now, or would we like to do more? Are we healthy and mobile now, or do we anticipate needing help in the near future? Do we still want to drive ourselves and would we also like to have the convenience of local transportation provided? What is our financial situation?
Would we like assistance with daily tasks and activities to add an additional element of convenience to our lives? Are we receiving all of the benefits to which we are entitled, such as Social Security, Medicare, Veterans’ Benefits, etc.? To be sure, you may have many other questions – or you may have already considered the implications of a move to a senior living community and are ready to make your decision. Your goal should be your long-term satisfaction. Visit the communities in your area. Ask the staff questions. Pay attention to the way you feel when you walk in the door. Are the staff members friendly and welcoming? Remember, this will be your new home.

Selecting the Right Insurance Agent for Your Needs T
he right insurance and the right agent can make your life so much easier. A savvy agent can help save you time and money and give you peace of mind. Shopping for the right insurance agent can be taxing. There are so many factors to consider, including finding a company that offers the right mix of service, coverage and an affordable price. For many, the biggest challenge is how to identify a reliable, reputable agent. Remember that everyone needs insurance coverage. An experienced agent can walk you through various options, keeping in mind your budget and lifestyle. Before choosing an insurance plan, you will need to identify an agent to guide you through the process. Your financial future depends on finding the right person to help you get insurance that will fit your needs. Your family, friends and colleagues have likely worked with insurance agents in the past. Ask people you trust for referrals. If you receive a recommendation, it is because that person has had a positive experience. There is a strong likelihood that you will have similar results. Successful agents understand that offering great service will keep them in business. Their careers depend on word-of-mouth. If you are happy with the service you receive, your insurance agent will appreciate your willingness to send business their way. If you do not have recommendations, begin researching your options. Begin by looking at local companies and brokers. Large insurers give all of their agents the same training. Each agent will be subject to the same company policies. In some ways, that can be comforting. However,
H12
agents at large companies may lack creativity and flexibility in how they handle their accounts. As you conduct your research, be thorough and critical. Buying a policy is similar to purchasing a new car or home. It truly is that important. Select a company that is highly regarded by consumers. Read reviews of each company to determine who has the most satisfied clients. Are they easy to work with? Have there been any problems with collecting on a policy?
Sunday, September 18, 2016
Also, check that any prospective agent has all necessary licenses and training. After narrowing your list of prospective agents, make an appointment to visit each one. Prepare a list of questions and concerns about your personal situation. Take notes during your meeting. Remember that you must feel comfortable with the answers before purchasing a policy. If an agent tries to pressure you into making a decision right away, inform him that you need more
time and cannot sign anything immediately. The right agent will let you take as much time as you need to understand the implications of each policy. They will give you useful information and not subject you to high-pressure sales techniques. Your agent should be available. The relationship doesn’t end once the sale is completed. Your dialogue should be continuous. The best agents are available in the event you have to file a claim. Agents who have been in busi-
ness for many years likely have a good reputation and track record. They understand the policies and will even take extra care that you are properly protected. It is essential that you choose the right type and amount of insurance to adequately protect yourself and your financial future. The policy should be tailored to fit your specific needs. A seasoned, skilled insurance agent will be an invaluable resource for safeguarding your future.

dealers and boat models. You might also think about where you plan to go boating. Dealers near your favorite boating spot will spare you from having to trailer your boat for hundreds of miles should it ever need servicing. Purchasing a trailer, docking and storage are also aspects to keep in mind as you purchase a boat. Leave enough money in your budget for these items. After you have narrowed your list to several dealers, it is time to speak to them. Go in person and bring a list of questions to ask them. When you have selected a boat, make sure it is NMMA certified. This certification ensures that the boat is built according to the American Boat and Yacht Council’s standards and will meet U.S. Coast Guard requirements. Do not select a dealer or boat right away. Ask to test drive boats you are thinking of purchas-
ing. The engine should not be warmed up for you. You will need to start the engine yourself to feel comfortable handling the boat. Make sure there is no potential for overheating the engine. Perform a visual inspection and test run before negotiating with the dealer. If you are still interested in the boat, haggle about the price. Make sure you don’t go over your budget. It will be hard to enjoy a boat when you can barely afford it. Ask the dealer if they will include essential accessories in the purchase price. The dealer might even include your registration fee in the total cost. If the fee is not included, you will need to register your boat at the Department of Motor Vehicles. Finding a trustworthy dealer will help you find the best solution for you so you can relax and enjoy your boat.

How to Choose an Auto Body Shop ‌Y our car has been badly damaged in an accident. Or it has some glaring dents, dings, scratches or bumps. Making repairs to the body of your car, however small, requires the expertise of professionals at a reputable body shop. Finding an auto body shop that is trustworthy and dependable will ensure that your car, truck, SUV or minivan is repaired quickly, affordably and correctly. The shop you choose should be able to complete all manner of work, from a minor touch-up to a full-body repair. Your friends, family and colleagues might have recommendations. After all, auto body shops are an unfortunate, but necessary, part of life for most people. Once you have a list of
H16

companies, research each shop on the Internet and read customer reviews. Testimonials, negative and positive, should be considered. But keep in mind that no business has a 100 percent satisfaction rate. Someone will always be displeased. Also, more people are likely to leave a negative rather than a positive comment. A good source for finding an auto body shop is your local newspaper. Local businesses advertise and many times you can find special deals to help save you money. Once you have created a list of shops, contact them on the phone and ask pertinent questions. How long have they been in business? What are their specialties? How soon can you bring your vehicle in for an inspection?
Ask to set up an appointment for a free inspection. Then further investigate the business. Look around their lobby. Is it clean? Do they have their license and any awards or certificates posted? Do they care enough about their customers to offer reading material, coffee or water? Consider their prices. Are they comparable to other body shops? While you want to find that deal, remember, cheaper is not always better. Understand that you will often get what you pay for when it comes to auto body work. Low prices may be tempting, but they typically mean sub-par work, used parts and paint that is incorrectly applied. Feel free to ask the manager or owner for references before they work on your car.
You can also check their previous work. When you see a car with paint drips, panels that are misaligned or paints that don’t match, look elsewhere. You will not save money if you need to have the improper work redone. The shop should inspect your vehicle for repairs that are not readily visible. Oftentimes, there are hidden damages that cannot be detected until repair work begins on the vehicle. Finding an auto body shop may not be the most pleasant business because it usually means your vehicle has suffered some kind of damage. But finding the right shop will make the experience much more pleasant and you will be happy with the repairs. Especially if you find the right shop that knows how to repair your vehicle so it looks the same as before, or even better.
