MontanaFair Lineup ALL STAR LINEUP Triple Threat Tour (BlackHawk, Shenandoah, and Restless Heart) Friday night at MontanaFair starts with a unique three act country show. All three of these bands had great chart-topping success in the 90’s and are still bringing the hits in 2019. For more than 20 years, BLACKHAWK has shared a unique sense of harmony with their voices, their songs, and their fans. It is a harmony that has sold over 7 million albums, scored some of the most distinctive country radio hits of the ‘90s, and still draws tens of thousands of fans to their electrifying live performances. Today BLACKHAWK continues to honor its past as it forges its future, and does it all with a commitment that takes their music – and the harmony – to a whole new level. Joining BLACKHAWK is Restless Heart who has enjoyed one of the most successful careers in country music history, placing over 25 singles on the charts – with six consecutive #1 hits, four albums certified Gold by the RIAA, and a wide range of awards. Kicking off the night is Shenandoah. The boys from Muscle Shoals have left a potent legacy at country radio with over a dozen #1 records. The group recently signed a recording deal with BMG and released their first new album in two decades to celebrate their 30th Anniversary.

98° with Special Guest Judith Hill & FAM The founding members of 98 Degrees met after Massillon, Ohio native Jeff Timmons decided to quit university and pursue a music career with best friend Jeremy Volk. In 1995, Timmons sang at a college party with three friends, and after receiving a positive reaction about his voice, he struck out for Los Angeles, California the following day. “It was a pretty hasty decision, looking back, but I was young and dumb. Sometimes ignorance is bliss,” he said in 2004. His name was passed on to another graduate, Nick Lachey, who was attending Miami University to study sports medicine. Lachey flew to Los Angeles and after hitting it off, decided to form a band. Lachey invited one of his friends, Justin Jeffre, to join them. The final member to join the band was Lachey’s younger brother,

Drew, who was working in New York City as an emergency medical technician. The group decided on the name “98 Degrees” describing body temperature and their music. The hits started rolling quickly. The group scored a Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit in the U.S. with the single “Thank God I Found You”, a collaboration with Mariah Carey and Joe. The single went gold, selling 700,000 copies. It stayed at No. 1 on the Hot 100 for one week and the top 200 singles sales chart for 51 weeks. The single went to the top 10 in the UK charts and the group also received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for the same song. In the summer of 2000, 98 Degrees

released the first single of their new album “Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)”, the single went to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified gold. In September 2000, the band’s album Revelation was released. Revelation peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and went 2× Platinum. The band’s next singles were “My Everything” and “The Way You Want Me To”, both reaching the Top 40. The band took a hiatus after playing September 10, 2001 which lasted eleven years. They reformed in 2013 and have been playing shows at fairs and festivals across the country since. Judith Hill is an American singersongwriter from Los Angeles, California.

She has provided backing vocals for such artists as Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Josh Groban. In 2009, Hill was chosen as Jackson’s duet partner for the song “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You” during his This Is It concert tour. After Jackson’s death in 2009, she, along with the rest of the This Is It cast members, performed at Jackson’s memorial service and attracted global attention when she sang the lead on the song “Heal the World”. Hill’s rise to fame is briefly recounted in 20 Feet from Stardom, a documentary film that tells the untold story of the backup singers behind some of the “greatest musical legends of the 21st century”. She is also a featured artist on the film’s soundtrack. She won the Grammy Award for Best Music Film for her performance in this film.

Old Dominion Old Dominion’s “Make It Sweet Tour” continues with the Sunday night stop at MontanaFair as part of the Pepsi Entertainment Series. The song “Make It Sweet” recently became the band’s 7th number one song in the past three years. “One Man Band” has been released as Old Dominion’s next radio single due to popular demand of the song. With over 40 million streams, the track is proving to be a fan favorite, creating one of a kind moments during every tour stop. The band’s new studio album, Old Dominion is set for release October 25.

Tasty and New Fabulous Food Vendors It’s all about the food at MontanaFair. Deep fried, sloppy, yummy, smelling delicious, tasty, “one of a kind I can only get at MontanaFair” delights for your taste buds await you at MontanaFair this year. Get a load of what’s new. Ever put the words “sushi” and “fair food” together before? You can now as Rollin Ritos are rolling out sushi nachos and sushi burritos for this year’s fair. Pizza is not necessarily a new fair food, but when you get it freshly baked from a wood fired oven, your mouth will love you. Cowboys has the oven hot and ready for you. Coming back for another go around at your palate is the remarkably messy and incredibly tasty BUBBA. This gourmet sloppy joe can only be found on the MontanaFair grounds at Santanahs. Bet you can’t eat just one. Fair favorites featuring fun and fondness for sweets like funnel cakes coated in powdered sugar, authentic French Beignets from Ben Yay’s, and cool, smooth Baskin Robbins ice cream. After all that, crunching down on a specialty waffle from Candy Town USA may send you to the top of the Black Out. Some people really want to see how their food is made. We can do that too. Midway Pastries has a new space-age automated lemon squeezer machine. Virtually every part of this machine is clear plastic, so you can see the yummy goodness pour fresh into your cup. Food from around the world is at your fingertips. Viking on a Stick is in the Sons of Norway booth, Giovanni’s New York Italian Sausages, A Taste of Asia and Khanthaly’s Egg rolls covers the Asian food choices, while Fat Taco and La Salsa Mexican Grill serve up south of the border fare. You can’t leave without trying the Foot-long corn dogs, chicken skewers, Guttbuster Cowpies, fry bread, and turkey legs – you better come hungry. The Jiffy Lube Lunch Bunch lets you duck work, eat your fair favorites, and get back to the grind without paying fair admission. Jiffy Lube stores in Billings make it possible by making sure you get your admission price back—and gives you a $15 coupon for Jiffy Lube Signature Service as you leave. The Jiffy Lube Lunch Bunch is Monday through Friday from noon-2 during MontanaFair. MontanaFair

reproduce and many plants depend on bees as pollinators. When a bee collects nectar and pollen from the flower of a plant, some pollen from the stamen—the male reproductive organ of the flower—sticks to the hairs of her body. When she visits the next flower, some of this pollen is rubbed off onto the stigma, or tip of the pistil—the female reproductive organ of the flower. When this happens, fertilization is possible, and a fruit, carrying seeds, can develop. You’ll learn about bees this year first hand at Opportunity Farm. There are five crop and product areas highlighted in Opportunity Farm. MontanaFair’s agriculture focus goes from water, to seeds and plants, to the bees who help pollinate. You’ll get a quick overview and understanding of how the 20,000 people who make a living in farming and ranching in Montana truly feed the world. Equipment in production agriculture can be unfamiliar. That’s why Ag equipment providers in Yellowstone County and across Montana have brought their gear to Opportunity Farm. Each piece of equipment will provide signage telling how it is used in the field. Touring the farm will answer lots of questions you might have about ag and leave you with a greater understanding of your food and those who produce it.

Start your day at MontanaFair with animals and farming. As soon as you walk in the main gate of the fairgrounds, you’ll walk into Opportunity Farm by Opportunity Bank. MontanaFair, and Montana, are built on agriculture. Opportunity Farm highlights the $4.6-billion-dollar industry with a focus on the crops and tools that make it happen. Agriculture begins with water. This year, Opportunity Farm and Agri Industries have teamed up to bring a Valley irrigation pivot to the fair. Much of our area in southeast Montana requires irrigation. You may have seen these massive pivots when you drive down the freeway. Now you can see and touch a pivot inside Opportunity Farm. in the Western Ranch Supply Expo. The home of the “most comfortable animals in Montana,” says MontanaFair General Manager Bill Dutcher. Over 63,000 square feet of air-conditioned space await animals and guests. From cattle and goats, to pigs, sheep, and chickens, you’ll find them in the WRS Expo. Please wash your hands when you come in contact with animal areas. VIP Services stocks restrooms and provides handwashing stations throughout MontanaFair where people and animals come together. Handwashing prevents the potential spread of disease. Animals are always one of the biggest attractions every year at MontanaFair. Western Ranch Supply is a primary supplier to ranchers in Montana, Wyoming, and the western part of the Dakotas and features a large line of animal care and handling products. “Western Ranch Supply has always focused on ag producers and 4-H,” said Keith Robinson, partner of Western Ranch Supply. “Helping kids show their hard work and get recognized for the effort is important to our next generation and our food supply.” Keep in mind when you visit the Expo, animals shown on the floor of the building are in competition and being judged. Often you will see animals being prepared for their turn in the show ring. Please allow the judges and contestants space to do their work.

Marketplace is a Shoppers Dream at MontanaFair Shopping at MontanaFair is always popular. Look for bargains on practically anything from spas to hats, candy, scents, and jewelry inside and outside on the fairgrounds. The large bay of the Montana Pavilion is the air conditioned shopping center of MontanaFair. In all, more than 200 vendors have goods ready for you to take home with you.

What’s New at the Fair There’s always lots of fun at MontanaFair. This year we are spicing things up with a few contests of our own. First, there’s Timesquare Furniture Rocks at MontanaFair. Painted rocks are cool and crafty. You’ll find these rocks all over the MontanaFair grounds. (The rocks will not be in any food area or in any carnival equipment.) Find a painted rock and bring it to the Art Barn for your chance to win a $100 gift certificate to Timesquare Furniture. You’ve played or watched Cornhole, right? How would you like to play to win a $50,000 RAM Truck from Lithia Dodge at the Yellowstone River Roundup? It’s new and it is easy to play. Just be at the rodeo any night for your chance. One guest will be selected each night to win a $100 gift certificate from Timesquare Furniture and have an opportunity to win a new truck. You must be at the rodeo to win. You could even find a part time job at MontanaFair. The U.S. Census Bureau has

a big job next year counting everyone who is in the country. If you are interested in making extra money, the Census Bureau will show you how you can serve your country and make cash too. Test your counting skills for a chance to win cash and apply for a great part time job with Census. You’ll find the Census Bureau in a number of places on the grounds and inside the Marketplace. MontanaFair is offering kids a place to Get Dirty at the fair. Turn them loose at Opportunity Farm to play in the dirt we use for planting programs on the fairgrounds. They’ll have a blast and we’ll have a special “I Got Dirty” sticker for all participants. MontanaFair loves the non-profit groups and organizations that make our community and state a better place. This year’s fair will give these groups access to sell 50-50 tickets during the fair. This is not your ordinary 50-50—it’s MontanaFair Mega 50-50. This game is a new all-electronic sales based 50-50 game played each day at MontanaFair. No more roll tickets stuffed into a bucket. You can buy your 50-50 from a participating non-profit group at the Mega 50-50 tent on the west side of the Western Ranch Supply Expo or from a strolling 5050 seller. You’ll get a printed ticket with your winning number. Keep track of the amount in the jackpot with a continuously updating tote board at the Mega 50-50 tent. A winner is selected each night at 10pm. A new location for the Timesquare Furniture Community Stage is on tap for

this years’ fair. The new home will share a space with SCRaP in the Sandstone Building at MontanaFair. You can find the stage’s schedule online at MontanaFair. com.

also open for Old Dominion at this years’ MontanaFair. With numerous jamborees and festivals under their belt, including the Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas, the band brings high energy and fun to every performance. You can watch them three times daily at the Montana Army National Guard Stage on the lake at MontanaFair. MontanaFair is back in the dog business with the lovable pups of Extreme Dogs performing three times daily near Billings Clinic/Childrens’ Hospital Colorado Kids’ World. These lovable rescue dogs and their dedicated champion trainers, will perform all your favorite dog sports. Agility, dock diving, high jump, weave pole racing, disc and tricks are just part of the show with a brilliant new cast. The show also promotes dog adoption and provides tips to help your own pooch live a healthy, happy life.

Jiffy Lube Lunch Bunch One of the most popular deals at the fair is the Lunch Bunch. This year, it’s the Jiffy Lube Lunch Bunch. Come to MontanaFair Monday through Friday beginning at noon and pay $5 for a gate admission token. Eat your fair food favorites and return your token by 2pm to get your $5 returned. You’ll not only get the chance to enter the fair and eat great fair food at lunch time, you’ll get a $15 Signature Service Gift Card from Jiffy Lube just for having lunch at the fair. The Jiffy Lube Lunch Bunch is a great way to get paid for eating lunch at MontanaFair.

Special Days at MontanaFair There are great special program days at MontanaFair to help fairgoers save money and highlight great work done in our community.

Sneak a Peek Friday, Buddy Night Monday You can set your schedule by it. MontanaFair’s official starting date is always the second Saturday in August. This means the fair can start as early as August 7 or as late as August 13, depending on how the dates fall on the calendar. Sneak-A Peek was originally designed to give people a head start on fair fun by opening rides and letting people onto the fairgrounds to get their fair fix early. It has morphed into the day you see now. Gates opening at 4pm. Rides cranking up by 6pm. A great country concert with BlackHawk,

Christin Lola - stock.adobe.com

Shenandoah, and Restless Heart kicks off the activity in First Interstate Arena. Not every building or program is running on Sneak-A-Peek night but some of the biggest and most visible parts of the fair are ready for you to sample. KULR8 Buddy Night is Monday night with the Mighty Thomas Carnival starting at 6pm. Buddy Night is one of the lowest cost ways to ride the rides at MontanaFair each year. It’s very simple. Buy one adult gate admission, get one free. Buy one carnival ride wristband for $32, get the second wristband free. All you need is a buddy to share the night. Buddies are what MontanaFair is all about. Both Saturdays at MontanaFair have great carnival ride deals. Saturday is $10 Dollar Day at the fair where 7 rides cost just $10. Sold Noon to 5pm but honored all day. Sunday through Friday afternoons from Noon to 5pm, there are big discounts on carnival wristbands. Priced at $22 but save even more with a discount coupon at MontanaFair.com. Other special night time ride promotions include Tuesday’s Ride ‘til U Drop and Thursday’s Wrist Up & Ride. These popular night time events extend the $22 wristband price to night time ride sessions.

Seniors Day By the time Monday rolls around at MontanaFair, nearly 100,000 people have already ridden or visited the 60+ attractions in the Mighty Thomas Carnival. They have eaten nearly $1 million dollars’ worth of fabulous fair food and watched three great concerts in the First Interstate Arena. That just means the fair is getting started and it is time to kick off the rest of the week with Senior Day. One out of every six people in Yellowstone County is a senior. To honor and salute the contributions of this group of citizens to our community, MontanaFair designates Monday August 12 as Senior Day at MontanaFair. First Interstate Bank is a co-sponsor of Senior Day at MontanaFair. Admission to MontanaFair is free to seniors. There are buses running to and from senior communities in Yellowstone County to make sure seniors can get to the fair. Yellowstone County Adult Resource Alliance provides a free senior lunch. You need to have a ticket for the meal and these are available at the Senior Centers and Meal Sites across Yellowstone County with some available at the door the day of the event. Certain fair buildings and attractions

will open early on Senior Day for the benefit of our guests and Plug Nickels Band will be the lunchtime entertainment inside First Interstate Arena as the featured entertainers. The first Seniors Day at MontanaFair in 2010 drew nearly 500 participants. This year, the expectation is for more than 1200 seniors to enjoy a great day at MontanaFair. Shuttles and golf carts, and the Shrine Train will be available to help transport individuals on the grounds.

Montana811 day It just seems right that Sunday, August 11 is Montana 811 Day at MontanaFair. Montana 811 are the “Call Before You Dig” people. With the superhighway of today being the amount of cables, pipes, drainage, and conduit running underground across a large part of Montana, Montana 811 is your most important and legally required first call before you dig. “This year, we got 811 involved with the Rock Hide & Seek event with the Art Barn at MontanaFair. There are hidden rocks with a Montana 811 logo on them throughout the MontanaFair grounds that can win you prizes,” said Clint Kalfell of Montana 811. “Look for the painted rocks Please see ATTRACTIONS, Page 12

Love Billings Day Love Billings Day, Saturday August 17, is an extension of the Love Billings Campaign started by Connoisseur Media. The idea began as a campaign to use the company’s radio stations in Billings to focus on a bullying problem in local schools. Using the combined media resources along with local businesses became a powerful way to raise awareness about the dangers of bullying and make Billings an even better place to live, work, play, and raise a family. Contributions from Billings businesses enable the campaign to extend its reach into the community. SCL Health, Mercedes Benz of Billings, The Advocates, and Pepsi have all signed on to help with this important outreach. Each year since its inception, the campaign has worked to help local organizations with fundraising and awareness programs. During 2018, Love Billings has promoted many different organizations including: Montana Warrior Run for the American Legion Comedy Because Bright and Beautiful The programs of the Love Billings campaign have provided over $50,000 of in-kind advertising during the past year.

Wendy’s Kids Day When people think of MontanaFair, the smells of funnel cakes and corn dogs come to life, the bright lights of the Midway appearing, and the sound of laughter in the air. Many of those laughs come from kids giggling after getting off a ride or winning big at one of the many carnival games. This year you will hear the laughter the loudest on Wendy’s Kids’ Day Wednesday, August

Wentana, the local Billings based Wendy’s franchise group, is excited to be the kids’ day sponsor for the second year in a row and takes pride in giving back to the communities it calls home. Its’ community outreach can be seen across various sponsorships and partnerships including Big Sky State Games, Saturday Live, and each sporting event played at Wendy’s Field at Daylis Stadium. Wentana also actively supports the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, a national public charity, and its tireless efforts to find, permanent loving homes for the many children in the foster care system, who are anxiously waiting for their forever families. Montana has two full time Wendy’s Wonderful Kids

recruiters that are focused exclusively on moving Montana children out of foster care into permanent, adoptive placements with loving families. These recruiters are funded by local in-store fundraising campaigns such as selling Frosty key tags and Halloween Frosty coupon books as well as the A Waiting Child Golf Classic held every August in Billings. “Giving something back to our communities is part of the foundation that Wendy’s was built on and one that Wentana strives to continue,” said Jonna Jones, Director of Marketing for Wentana. “We are grateful for organizations like MontanaFair that give us the opportunity to partner together to have a Wendy’s Kids’ Day for families to attend.” Wentana currently operates seventeen restaurants in Montana (14), Wyoming (2), and North Dakota (1). Wendy’s was founded in 1969 by Dave Thomas, whose favorite food was a fresh,

The center of business in Billings and Yellowstone County is in the downtown medical corridor, featuring Billings Clinic. The center of MontanaFair is the Mighty Thomas Carnival, featuring all the rides and attractions. This year, Billings Clinic has combined with their partners at Children’s Hospital Colorado to make the area even better. The Billings Clinic/Children’s Hospital Colorado Kids’ World has expanded to feature 32 rides, attractions, and games sure to entertain the young in your family. Mighty Thomas Carnival President/ Owner John Hanschen, “With the sponsorship from these two great medical facilities, we were able to acquire and place more activities for kids. The Kids’ World attraction will be even better with this support.” Billings Clinic and Children’s Hospital Colorado formed a care alliance between the two facilities in 2017. the alliance is to provide children and their families with the highest level of coordinated medical care as close to home as possible. This alliance streamlines the coordination of care between the two organizations to ensure the right care at the right time at the right location. Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora is one of the top 10 children’s hospitals in the United States. Focusing on improving pediatric care was a major reason for the formation of the alliance. Seeing smiles on the faces of children is the end goal of both MontanaFair and Billings Clinic. We have a long standing relationship with Children’s Hospital Colorado,” said Dr. Michelle Pierson, Chair of Pediatrics at Billings Clinic, “The Care Alliance serves to strengthen that relationship and further enhances the high quality of pediatric care we provide to patients right here at home. Billings Clinic is proud to have the largest pediatric specialty group in our area, because we, with our partners at CHCO, are committed to kids and want them to have the best chance at a happy, fulfilling childhood.” The additional rides and smiles from the partnership makes the 2019 MontanaFair even more special for kids. You can visit the Billings Clinic/Children’s Hospital Colorado Kids’ World on the southwest corner of MontanaFair every day.

MontanaFair Shuttle Bus

Lego Lane

There are 189 acres making up the MontanaFair/MetraPark campus. More than 3000 parking spaces and 925,000 square feet of paved parking are available on the grounds. With space that large, you want to save as many steps as you can before you get to the midway and the great fair food. MontanaFair, with the assistance of the Yellowstone County Adult Resource Alliance and the YMCA, are providing free shuttle buses for the fair. The shuttles make their runs regularly throughout the entire fair moving people from the large upper parking lot at the grounds to the main gate. There are multiple shuttle stops in front of the arena, in front of Montana Pavilion, and at the stairwell at the foot of the lower parking lot leading to the arena. MontanaFair parking shuttle are absolutely free. The shuttles run from noon to midnight each day of the fair. Catch a parking shuttle at the MontanaFair shuttle signs at locations in the fairgrounds parking lots.

One of the most fun attractions at MontanaFair each year is Bricks & Minifigs presentation of Lego Lane inside First Interstate Arena Exhibit Hall near Youth Art. In past years, Lego Lane has featured some incredible designs including the Star Wars Death Star and First Interstate Arena. Wait till you see this years’ model of the full grounds of MetraPark. MontanaFair has its focus on building and growing. This year, Lego Lane is bringing back the Lego Derby and it’s all free. You are on the clock to build your derby car with Lego pieces. Then after building, it is time to race. The person with the fastest time wins a prize. All entrants get something for their efforts. Don’t miss the fun at Lego Lane.

Quilt-Topia Barn Quilt Challenge

quilts will be reproduced by our Graphic Arts Department and proudly placed on one of the livestock barns prior to the 2020 MontanaFair. Barn quilts were originally conceived as a way to encourage economic development by promoting ag-tourism and local businesses while bringing travelers to rural areas. While quilts are usually made up of a series of squares of the same pattern and placed together, a barn quilt is always a single square. All quilt squares must be delivered to the MontanaFair Open Entry Office along with the quilt entry form. All entries must be picked up Sunday, August 18th between 11 AM-3 PM. Items not picked up will be discarded or donated. Please make sure to pick-up your ribbons with your exhibit as MontanaFair will not mail exhibits or ribbons.

This contest is the perfect opportunity Supercross to funnel your quilting creativity into Billings Motorcycle Club designs, a show-stopping square that will stop Fairgoers in their tracks. The winning builds, and puts on a great show in front

of the Northern Hotel Grandstands each year. Supercross has all age participants jumping over the moguls and off the ramps to the delight of the largest audience of the year in the Grandstands. Each year it takes over 100 hours of time to put the dirt in place to make for an exciting show. This year, BMC has new staff working on the design and build of the tracks. More than 100 riders will take to the track starting at 6pm on Tuesday, August 13 at MontanaFair.

Yellowstone River Roundup PRCA Rodeo sponsored by Shipton’s Big R 2019 is the 10th anniversary of the PRCA rodeo coming to MontanaFair. the world have appeared at the fair. Tuf Cooper, Trevor Brazile, Clay Tryan, and Ty Erickson have all made multiple appearances at the Yellowstone River Roundup. The YRR is one of the last rodeos of the year providing the opportunity for participants to earn those last dollars to qualify for the NFR in Las Vegas. There are three nights of competition at the Yellowstone River Roundup. This year, Lithia and RAM Trucks have stepped up with a great prize opportunity for rodeo fans. Each night at the rodeo, someone in attendance will have a chance to win a $50,000 RAM Truck. Must be present to win.

Exchange Club service to community Beers at MetraPark are the cheapest in town. Really. Here’s how the math works. The Breakfast Exchange Club of Billings and the Downtown Billings

Exchange Club take the money made in beer sales and donate it back to the community. About 40% of the price you pay for a beer at MetraPark goes to support a number of charities and charitable works in and around Billings and Yellowstone County. So a $6 beer really is a $3.60 beer and a $2.40 charity donation. In the last several years, the Billings Breakfast Exchange Club has made donations of over $150,000 annually to different non-profit groups in the area including Family Tree Center, Tumbleweed, YWCA, Yellowstone Boys and Girls Club, and the Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch. Don’t try and convince your tax guy this is a legitimate deduction. But do enjoy your favorite beverages served by the clubs knowing that a good portion of the money you pay does more than quench your thirst, it also does good. Breakfast Exchange also works hard in supporting our military and first responders in our country. ziss - stock.adobe.com

MIGHTY THOMAS CARNIVAL

The lines were long, the screams were loud, and the spectacle of Black Out hit the Mighty Thomas Carnival Midway at MontanaFair last year. Black Out is back for 2019 for thrill seekers who may have missed their chance. Ask those who rode last year, Blacking Out on a ride is entirely possible. Mighty Thomas Carnival President John Hanschen is looking forward to coming back to Billings for the fair. “MontanaFair is always one of our favorite places,” said Hanschen. “The people are great and it just brings out the best in all of us to make sure everyone has a great time.” On Black Out, twelve passengers are secured into gondolas that rotate and flip as the central arm swings eighty feet in the air. Black Out is similar to another long time MontanaFair staple, The Speed. Black Out’s is 140 feet—the arm rotates at a speed of 13 rpm and passengers in the gondolas at each end experience an intense G-force sensation with one important difference from The Speed—Black Out also goes side to side as it catapults riders to the highest point on the MontanaFair grounds. The Speed moved to a new area in 2018 and will remain on the south end of the fairgrounds near the Billings Clinic/Children’s Hospital Colorado Kids’ World. Another new spectacular ride, the Star Tower, will be back for another go around for thrill seekers. You will get a great view of the rims from the Star Tower’s ninety-foot tall chair swings. The ride is designed for older children and adults. Mighty Thomas Carnival has a great way to save with Pay One Price ride wristbands for MontanaFair. Regularly $30 but there are special days and discount periods scattered liberally throughout the run of the fair. Check the fair schedule or MontanaFair.com for wristband discounts and special deals. Sneak A Peek night, sponsored by Buffalo Wild Wings and Budweiser opens MontanaFair Friday night with $22 wristbands and a $5 gate admission. Monday

through Friday afternoon ride wristbands are also just $22. There are other wallet savings specials available at MontanaFair.com. The Billings Clinic/Children’s Hospital Colorado Kids World is one of the big attractions at MontanaFair. Mighty Thomas Carnival President John Hanschen described what parents will find this year. “A lot of great classic rides will be back at Kids World,” said Hanschen. “The 100-foot fun slide, the Fun House, and Happy Face Bounce are just a few of the rides the kids will enjoy.” In addition, kids always love the Barnyard, the Speedway, and the Rio Grande Train, where the operator often wears an old-school engineer’s cap and rings a bell as the train departs the station. The whole family can enjoy the Up Up and Away, the U-Toob, the Wiggle Wurm, and the Airport—the seats accommodate both children and adults. Mighty Thomas Carnival has had a special relationship at MontanaFair for many years. MontanaFair General Manager Bill Dutcher likes this particular carnival. “The Circle of Excellence

is given to less than 5% of the carnivals nationwide by the Outdoor Amusement Business Association,” said Dutcher. “Mighty Thomas Carnival is one of the carnivals in the circle. It makes us proud to bring such a high quality and safe organization to Billings for our guests to enjoy.” The Billings Clinic/Children’s Hospital Colorado Kids World is one of the big attractions of MontanaFair. Hanschen described what parents will find this year. “A lot of great classic rides will be back at Kids World this year,” said Hanschen. “The 100 foot fun slide, the Fun House, and Happy Face Bounce are just a few of the rides the kids will enjoy.” Thomas Carnival facilities include generators and wire, light towers, benches, rest and shade areas, trucks, and trailers, repair shops, laundry and uniform facilities, offices and living quarters in addition to the rides, games and food concessions seen by the public on the midway. One hundred fifty traveling workers are joined by locally hired employees and helpers to set up, operate, and then dismantle the show after MontanaFair August 17. Dozens of dedicated carnival

workers make it possible to move and operate the show at over 50 locations each year. Ride operators work hard to load and operate amusement rides with care. Ticket sellers are trained to have general information about the fair, and they answer hundreds of questions every day. All Thomas Carnival midway workers participate in a pre-season and random drug screening program. The main carnival office is located on the midway and administrative staff is always available for questions and comments. Credit cards are accepted at the carnival box offices, and First Interstate Bank ATMs are located on the midway and throughout the fairgrounds. The carnival maintains a corner general store open to fair customers, stocked with a small variety of personal items you may need during your day visiting the fair. Thomas Carnival classics: Tilt-a-Whirl, seven seats of undulating movement, was invented by the Minnesota Sellner family in 1927. The Tilt remains one of the most popular rides in America. The Merry-Go-Round (check out the artwork on the carousel horses), is an Allen Herschell

model. Ours is “3-abreast”, a total of 30 horses. There are 3 galloping poses to choose from, and 6 different color schemes. Children love to select their favorite horse. Crystal Lil’s House of Mirrors: two levels included: the lower mirror maze, and the upper level filled with crazy mirrors and a circular slide that takes you back to ground level. Dizzy Dragons from Sellner are green dragon riding capsules with smiling faces. This style is from the famous Sellner Spin Ride Limited collection. MontanaFair has the Billings Clinic/Children’s Hospital Colorado Kids World with the Barnyard, the Speedway, and the Rio Grande Train, where the operator often wears an old-school engineer’s cap and rings a bell as the train departs the station. The whole family can enjoy the Up Up and Away, the U-Toob, the Wiggle Wurm, and the Airport—the seats accommodate both children and adults. The exciting Cliffhanger amusement ride with spectacular lighting is the only ride that flies customers through the air like Superman. Tornado’s new light package will be on full display for guests inside the fair and for people traveling past the grounds. Its open-air tubs spin under the control of the passengers. Other featured attractions on the Thomas Carnival midway this year at the fair: Monster Trucks: Wisdom Rides of Colorado built this popular children’s ride featuring realistic monster trucks with a popa-wheelie motion. Each car has sound effects and each rider has a steering wheel. Adults may accompany youngsters. Monster Trucks may be our most popular children’s attraction. Martian Maze: Adorable Martians are pictured on the scenery of the Martian Maze. Young children climb ladders, cross bridges, slide down slides, and walk through a rotating barrel. Frog Hopper: Another popular youth ride, this one with a hopping motion, was made by Utah’s

S & S Sports. Adults may ride with the youngsters on the Frog Hopper, as well. More returning favorites include 100-foot Fun Slide, and the Zamperla Mini Jet with 8 bold ships shaped like barrels melded into fantastic flying airplanes. The ride’s air compressor sends the ships hissing into the air for the imaginary trip over the fairgrounds. The crafts glide smoothly back down the ground after a 90 second flight. Fun Zone Fun House walk-through starts with fresh and friendly fun cartoon figures painted on the front’s façade. Inside, look for easy obstacles, visual tricks, spinning disks, and an exciting Barrel O Fun at the exit. Happy Face Bounce: Children under 42 inches enjoy jumping in the Thomas Carnival bounces. Our air-supported jumpers feature The Wacky Maze and Happy Faces. Gopher Golf: a round of challenging miniature golf is included with each day’s wristband. Look for the tall red, orange, and blue canvas on top of the carnival caddy shack. Keep score and ask about daily tournaments. Also included with an armband purchase: one

free attempt to Fool the Guesser for a small prize (your choice of age, weight, or birth month.) If the guesser misses by more than 2 years, 3 pounds, or 1 month, you win! The Scrambler is a carnival classic produced by the Eli Bridge Company out of Illinois. The seats interlace with each other as they spin, but they never touch, much like a giant egg beater. The Starship 4000 is Wisdom Manufacturing’s latest update of the archetypal space ship simulation. The feeling of weightlessness never gets old as the ship races around at over 20 revolutions per minute. This ride features groundbreaking technological advances in its mechanical operation as well as dazzling new lighting and scenery packages. Look for new colors and attractive new lighting on the Zipper. Chance Rides manufactures this quintessential thrill ride—cages spinning about 2 axes—thrilling and memorable. The trendy “Wacky Cowboy” coaster returns to Billings this year. The coaster features bright colors, a flashing LED light package, and a lead cow-

boy mouse with sheriff’s badge who guides riders through exciting dips and curves. The Wacky Cowboy Roller Coaster is manufactured by Fajume in San Salvador, El Salvador. Family groups enjoy this coaster, together. The focal point of the Thomas Carnival midway is the towering Century Wheel, a 70 foot Ferris wheel with gondola-style seating—providing in-the-cloud enjoyment for guests ranging from family units to brand new friends attending their first fair together. The Century Wheel is Thomas Carnival’s most popular ride. The Chance Rides Thunderbolt boasts alternating red and blue cars circling a center point that pivots outward— by centrifugal force. Passengers end up sideways as the toboggans swing to navigate the hilly track! And the mighty Pharaoh’s Fury appears to be an ocean vessel with an artistic Egyptian Pharaoh’s head sculpture at each end. Swinging in an arc 54 feet high, the Pharaoh’s Fury takes passengers from horizontal to vertical. You’ll witness scores of passengers thrill to the momentary weightless effect as the boat rises high, reverses mo-

tion, then plunges. One cool ride. Adventurous riders also enjoy the exciting wave action of Moby Dick, built in Colorado by Wisdom rides. Bystanders laugh as the Moby riders’ feet swing in synchrony to the movement of this riding machine adorned with a painted mural of a giant whale swimming the high seas. The “ground-mounted” Bumper Cars sets right at eye level, each structural piece unloaded from a two-trailer combination. One more great ride to watch from the sidelines. Youngsters meeting the height requirement often get their first driving experience in the Thomas Carnival Dodgem Cars. Popular carnival games include water races, the duck pond, balloon pop, basketball, break-abottle, big ring-o-bottle, grab bag, fish ‘til you win game, bulldozertoken push, and the rope ladder. Everyone enjoys the colorful prizes: teddy bears, dogs, frogs, computer portraits, buttons, t-shirts, wall-hangings and a fantastic array of neat trinkets and novelties. Stuffed Dragons and Unicorns, Smurfs, Emoji’s, Owls are the hot items this year, along with team

Basketballs—only at the pro hoops long range basketball game. And something new: Foot Darts—soccer balls kicked towards 30-foottall Velcro- covered target board— aim to score big to win a prize. Enjoy tasty traditional fair food items on the midway, including corn dogs, foot long hot dogs, cheese steaks, caramel and candy apples, nachos, pickles, funnel cakes, pizza, hamburgers, popcorn, cotton candy, sno-cones, and soft drinks. The Midway Pastries has a new-age automated lemon squeezer device made of clear plastic—you can watch the fresh juice being produced and delivered to your own cup. The other stands have catchy names and logos, including the Sugar Barn, the Sweet Spot, and the Midway Grill. The Mighty Thomas Carnival traveling show is presenting thrilling rides, fun games, and succulent carnival treats at the MontanaFair for the 40th year. Founded in 1928 in Lennox, South Dakota, by Art B. Thomas, the show now winters near Austin, Texas, and is providing its 92nd season of summer fun and excitement for fair-goers at 51 events in 12 states.
