Yellowstone River Roundup Rodeo Three-day event attracts high profile cowboys The Yellowstone River Roundup is one of the fastest growing PRCA rodeos in the United States. In 2010, MontanaFair moved the fair rodeo to the Northern Hotel Grandstands, renamed the event, changed the affiliation to PRCA, and benefitted from the addition of the Cowboy Club as a booster organization for the event. The result is a rodeo that is now one of the top 50 events in the United States. The three day event has attracted some of the best rodeo cowboys in the nation today, such as Trevor Brazile, the PRCA All-Around Cowboy multiple year champion. Eight of the top ten cowboys in the nation were among a record number of 586 participants in the YRR in 2015. The latest participant list for this year’s rodeo is available at MontanaFair.com. Expectations are high this year for another huge group of participants which makes slack a very important component. Slack performances are free to the public and occur during the day in front of the Northern Hotel Grandstands. The night time performances of the rodeo are August 18, 19 and 20 at 7pm.
Tough Enough to Wear Pink
St. Vincent Healthcare Foundation is the sponsor for Thursday night’s Tough Enough to Wear Pink at the Yellowstone River Roundup PRCA Rodeo. The idea for TETWP was created by entrepreneur and breast cancer survivor Terry Wheatley in 2004 with Karl Stressman, former director of special events for Wrangler and now commissioner of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PCRA). The purpose of the program is to bring the sport of professional rodeo and the western community together to rally against breast cancer. TETWP began at the 2004 National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. Terry Wheatley had been personally struck by breast cancer as had other members of her family. She wondered how she could rally rodeo cowHANNAH POTES/Gazette Staff boys and the western community to bring Nick Guy of Sparta, WI, competes in the steer wrestling event during the PRCA Rodeo Yellowstone River Roundup. awareness to the disease. She hit upon the idea of associating the color pink to spread word of the support. Wheatley’s son, Wade Wheatley, was a NFR competitor and helped push the campaign among his peers. The Yellowstone River Roundup has th had a TETWP night since it moved to the Northern Hotel Grandstands in 2010. Again this year, YRR will have its Tough Enough to Wear Pink night on Thursday, August 18. 4-H HAPPENINGS Safety Concerns
LARRY MAYER/Gazette Staff
Tucker Adkins, of the Northern Lights 4-H club, waits in line with his rabbit. The Rabbit Agility competition starts at 4 p.m. at the Expo Center on Friday, August 12.
4-H Junior Livestock Sale The 4-H Junior Livestock Sale at MontanaFair is a bit like the Super Bowl for boys and girls raising livestock. The raising and nurturing of animals is a real life taste of production agriculture in a state where cattle outnumber people by a nearly 2:1 ratio. The sale is an opportunity for 4-H members to “go to market” and show off the hard work and labor in raising swine, steers, goats, lambs, and turkeys. While it seems like the Junior Livestock Sale has always been at MontanaFair, it really began at the fairgrounds just 35 years ago. Auctioneer Pat Goggins, who had been holding and supporting the sale at his livestock markets, was asked to bring the 4-H Junior Livestock Sale to MontanaFair by fair manager Bill Chiesa. Goggins and his family have been major supporters

of Montana agriculture and 4-H programs. The move of the sale to MontanaFair brought more buyers and higher prices for the animals. With Goggins passing earlier this year, Yellowstone County 4-H wanted to offer a tribute to the man who did so much for agriculture and 4-H. Going forward in honor of Goggins, the sale will be named the Patrick K. Goggins Junior Livestock Sale. The sale will be inside the Expo Center at MontanaFair Saturday, August 20 at 12:30pm.
Rabbit Hopping & Agility Rabbit Hopping and Agility is one of the newer and most unique 4-H events that occurs when the gates open at MontanaFair. Rabbit hopping originated in Sweden in the
early 1970’s and is patterned after miniature horse jumping. Sweden held the first national rabbit hopping championship in 1987 and the sport found its way to the United States in 2011. The American Hopping Association for Rabbits and Cavies was chartered in 2012. This is a performance sport where rabbits are directed to run through a course of jumps ranging from 4” to 20” high. There is also a long jump and a high jump which can be very challenging for a rabbit. The object is to hit the fewest number of obstacles (called a fault). Ninety percent of the score comes from the performance on the course. The final 10 percent of the score comes from sportsmanship, time limits, and humane treatment of the animals. Rabbit Agility will be jumping in the Expo Center at 4pm on August 12 at MontanaFair.
Animals are one of the biggest attractions each year at MontanaFair. The fair exhibited 2,568 steers, sheep, goats, rabbits, horses, and poultry in 2015. There are important safety concerns when working with animals such as safe handling and the prevention of harmful bacteria. That’s why Benjamin Franklin Plumbing, operated locally by Mark Riley, joins MontanaFair this year to help make everyone aware of the need to wash their hands after animal contact. The organization will be providing additional hand washing stations on the grounds along with placing hand washing reminder signs in every animal barn, every restroom, and every hand washing station at MontanaFair courtesy of Benjamin Franklin Plumbing. “A trip to the fair is always a fun time,” said Mark Riley. “No one wants to see a fun trip turn into something unpleasant. Washing your hands after any animal contact is a great way to reduce the chance of germs spreading from animals to humans.”
Stunt Dogs Return with a Brand New Show This year, Stunt Dog Productions is back featuring a brand new show. These performing arts style shows are exciting from beginning to end. Stunt Dogs have entertained millions across North America since 1999 with their original Extreme Canines Stunt Dog Show. formed by dogs. Each show offers over 40+ jaw dropping tricks, big air stunts, comedy antics, dancing dogs, athletic feats, high-jumping challenges, interactive crowd participation, and is one of the most entertaining animal acts in the industry! Every show features Chris Perondi’s famous “Stunt Dog Triathlon”. This fast-paced timed race includes the three most popular dog sports: Flying Disc, Flyball, and Agility. The audience
will be separated into teams as they cheer on their stunt dogs to the finish line! Stunt Dogs have been featured on numerous television programs such as the Ellen Degeneres Show, Queen Latifah, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Animal Planet’s Pet Star!, Fox Sports “You Gotta See This!”, and the CBS Early Show. Stunt Dogs will be performing three times daily at Montana Park in the Kids World area. MontanaFair 2016

STAGE PERFORMANCES Lake Stage One fun thing to do each night at MontanaFair is to listen to songs under the stars at the Lake Stage sponsored by the Montana Army National Guard. And this year, there are two very different music styles to take in. BLEND is a 50’s style a cappella group that brings doo-wop and gospel back to the stage for a rockin’ good time. The four singers started performing as a minor project while in college. After handily winning a talent show, they decided to make a career of singing and performing. BLEND has performed all across the United States including Dick Clark’s American Bandstand Theater, on an album from classic country singer Ronnie McDowell, and in performing arts centers and fairs across the Midwest. MontanaFair is the first ever Montana performance for BLEND. The group will have three shows daily. Country music has clearly evolved with rock influences in recent years. Rock has been changed by country too as evidenced by Joe Don Rooney of Rascal Flatts collaborating with Theory of a Deadman. Bringing both these influences together is what Coyote Wild will do at MontanaFair. The band song list would easily fill more than 6 one hour shows. From songs by Paramour and Bon Jovi to Lady Antebellum and Zac Brown, the seven members of Coyote Wild make it fun every night. High

entertaining moments with Mango and Dango at last year’s MontanaFair. The duo drew laughs and attention wherever they performed on the grounds. Perhaps the Flying Umbrella Ship will make an appearance or maybe the incredibly dangerous chair stacking routine (yes, they really can stack chairs that high). This year, you will be able to watch Mango and Dango’s performance every day on the Billings Gazette stage.
FOOD & FUN AT THE FAIR Fair Food You’ve waited all year to have a Viking on a Stick. The food is often cited as one of the biggest reasons people come to MontanaFair. Whether it’s for barbecue, corn dogs, cheese curds, caramel apples, 4-H ice cream, or Girl Scout corn on the cob, MontanaFair has food for everyone to enjoy. This year, the fair has added ten new food vendors to go along with the favorites you have come to know and love on the grounds. If you have a taste for nostalgia, then you’ll be excited to learn that Sandee’s is coming to MontanaFair. The locally famous hamburger stand that closed nearly 20 years ago will have all the great offerings of yesteryear. Great Ape Crepes will add a little French culture to the fair. Cajun Phatty’s and the Montana Tamale Company will have their own versions of ethnic favorites. Add old fashioned soda fountain drinks, roasted nuts, kettle korn, dipped strawberries, deep fried sausages, turkey legs, egg rolls, and cotton candy and you’ll

Death Star from the first Star Wars movie built entirely from LEGO® products. This year’s project is a little closer to home and just as spectacular. A team of builders measured and designed the building of a scale model of MetraPark’s Rimrock Auto Arena and will have the model on display all during the week of fair in the arena’s Exhibit Hall. LEGO® Lane will also feature a LEGO® Build Competition, Speed Building contests, and a chance for fair-goers to race in the LEGO® Lane Brick Derby. The young and old are invited to visit the display and compete for bragging rights in the Exhibit Hall daily from noon to 7pm.
Knockerball is the latest craze in interactive entertainment! Imagine what it would feel like to be a superhero, with a force-field all around you, in the form of a huge clear plastic inflatable bubble. Only your feet are exposed at the bottom to provide you the ability to move. Your task is to remain on your feet while the other five competitors on the field are trying to do the same thing. Think of it like bumper cars— only this time the car is powered by you. Knockerball is brand new to MontanaFair this summer. USA Today has featured the game on its pages and highlighted pro athletes who have played it like Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers.
MontanaFair has its own kind of magic every year. This year, the magic gets bigger with magician Jeff Martin. Deciding what you want to do with your life at age eight may seem a little unusual, but Jeff Martin did that exactly. Thirty plus years later, he’s one of only about two thousand ‘full-time’ professional magicians. Jeff Martin makes people of ALL ages smile, laugh, giggle, and simply marvel at the wonders of comedy magic with all of its production, misdirection, bunnies, doves, and antics that make a quality show entertaining. Martin has a simple goal with his shows. “I love to make people laugh! In a time of turmoil and uncertainty, the show lets you step away from all the stuff out there and just remember what it’s like to be a family and be together doing something fun, like going to a fair and sharing some cotton candy and watching a magic show!” Catch comedy magician Jeff Martin strolling the grounds four times daily at MontanaFair.

Montana Fair 2016
Breakfast Exchange Club The Breakfast Exchange Club is one group working at MontanaFair where the fun is a bit contagious. You will see BEC members volunteering their time to serve beer at most of the venues at MontanaFair. What you may not know is how BEC turns the cash from beer sales into a huge community benefit. Veterans Day at MontanaFair is one of those community benefits. The Breakfast Exchange Club sponsors Veterans Day at the fair on Friday, August 19, to honor all those who have served. There will be a special Veterans Day program sponsored by the club and the Veterans Council on the Timesquare Furniture Stage on Friday afternoon. Veterans also get free admission to the fair on Veterans Day. Tickets to the Yellowstone River Roundup PRCA rodeo for vets are provided free of charge courtesy of Harvey Singh of Singh Contracting. Veterans Day is just one program funded by the Breakfast Exchange Club. The club also focuses on

programs to prevent child abuse. The club donates more than $100,000 annually and a major portion of that comes from beer sale revenues at MetraPark events. Beginning late last year, the Billings Gazette produced a series of Vietnam War stories from area veterans called Vietnam Voices. Now for the first time, the Gazette will highlight these stories with
a special display at MontanaFair. The display is a 200 square foot wall with selected stories and photos from the Gazette. If you missed any of the personal stories in the paper or online at BillingsGazette.com, this is your chance to take a look at the real life history in our community. The wall will be displayed near the Billings Gazette Stage during the fair.
Benefits of the MontanaFair The economic benefit to the area during the nine days of MontanaFair is equivalent to having a sold out Cat-Griz football game every night of the week. In 2015, a record of more than $7 million of business was transacted during the run of MontanaFair. Carnival rides accounted for over $1 million of activity. Food and beverage business accounted for over $1.5 million while ticket revenue added up to $1.2 million. Support for the fair comes from a number of local and national businesses who sponsor a number of different activities on the grounds.
