PARADE PREVIEW: Welcome to the 2020 Parade of Homes By CHARITY DEWING • cdewing@billingsgazette.com

Helgeson Construction

This is the first in a four-part series of Parade of Homes, brought to you by the Billings Gazette and the Home Builders Association of Billings. For the following two weeks, The Billings Gazette’s “Your Home” section will feature the design work of some of the city’s top construction companies and the homes that have been selected for this year’s Parade of Home selection. In Big Sky Country, no matter how large or small, our homes are more than just a place to rest our weary heads. Our homes are often a calling card of our identities – they are our safe place, and the homes for this year’s parade truly go above and beyond what we seek to create a comfortable environment. These homes embody the phrase “staycation.”

Having your home – no matter if it is a one-bedroom apartment or five-bedroom house – should offer the ‘staycation’ factor, even if that means upgrading your bathroom or decorating your living space.

Inspiration. According to Kimberly Welzenbach, executive officer at the Home Builders Association of Billings, the average parade home is valued between $850,000 to $1.2 million – far above the average market value in Billings. While the homes are not targeted towards the typical Billings’ resident, inspiration is one of the main reason’s attendees love the Parade of Homes year after year. From paint colors, counter tops, cabinetry, bathroom upgrades and innovative ways to enhance homelife – parade goers love touring these incredible homes.

The most popular Parade of Homes design trends over the past years have been the rustic look with Western décor and materials fashioned from Montana elements like driftwood application.

“Especially today in the era of COVID, people have come to understand the challenges and necessity of being able to live and work while still enjoying the comforts of And why not invest in sincerely living your best life every family and home,” said Welzenbach. day by creating a home that offers enough solace to eliminate the need to take a vacation? Perhaps now more than Trending. “It’s been said that the only constant in life is ever, constructing a space that brings you joy is the most change. That would certainly apply to the construction and design of parade homes over the years, said Welzenbach. important aspect of the design process.

“Aside from the ‘wow factor’ parade homes bring, approximately 70 percent of attendees take the tour for décor and design ideas,” said Welzenbach.

Wells Built Homes

“Montana is often referred to as the last best place. Residents and visitors hold a unique fondness for Montana’s treasures and the Montana way of life. Homes designed with the influence of Big Sky Country are an expression of that fondness by the builder and the homeowner alike,” said Welzenbach.

Exterior Lighting Guide Why homeowners should add more exterior light to their properties.

• Safety: Trips and falls can occur at night when trying to traverse walkways and landscapes in the dark, as it can be difficult to see rocks, stairs and uneven pavement. Outdoor lighting can illuminate pathways, entryways and other areas for safer access for homeowners and their guests. • Extend outdoor entertaining: Ample lighting can increase the amount of time one can use outdoor spaces and make them the perfect gathering spot. As autumn arrives, days become shorter. However, patios, porches and more can get extended use with lighting. • Safeguard security: A well-lit home may be less likely to be targeted by burglars than one swathed in darkness and shadows. Lights can remain on all evening or be motion-triggered. Setting lights on timers also ensures that the home is illuminated whether residents are home or not. • Create drama: Landscape lighting designers can establish focal points around the landscape and highlight the best features of a property. Uplighting in trees, silhouetting techniques to showcase plants and spotlights to show off architectural features are all options for homeowners to consider. • Add value: The experts at Parker Homescape, a landscape design service, say that exterior lighting can add roughly 30 percent to the value of a home. They also indicate that 50 percent of all home buyers say that outdoor lighting is important when buying a home. If current residents are thinking about selling, now may be the time to invest in exterior lighting.

Improving a home’s exterior may be as simple as adding more lighting to improve functionality and beauty.

BEWARE OF STORM CHASERS

HOW TO HIRE AN HONEST CONTRACTOR After a severe storm, home owners may find it necessary to call in professionals to help repair damage to their homes. It’s an unfortunate fact of life that after a natural or man-made disaster, there are people who will try to profit from a community’s misfortune. But a fly-by-night contractor is one disaster you can prevent if you follow a few steps to ensure you hire a reputable professional. In fact, it makes sense to follow these guidlines when you are evaluating any potential contractor, whether it’s for post-disaster repairs or a planned renovation of your home.

Here are some guidelines to keep in mind: Price and payment • Contact the Home Builders Association to verify you are working with a local, legitimate contractor. • Don’t get pressured into signing a contract immediately. • Talk to your insurance company. If you’re covered, legitimate contractors can be paid by insurance funds with no money up front by you. • Make sure you have a contract that spells out exactly what work will be done, when it will be started and completed and all cost to you are spelled out. References • Confirm that the contractor has a verified mailing address address for their business. • Check with the HBA to see if the contractor is a member or what they may know about the business. • Check with the city to make sure the contractor has a local business license. • Check out the business on consumer review sites such as Angie’s List or HomeAdvisor. Contract and Completion • Be cautious of anyone who tells you “A contract is not necessary.” • Ensure the final payment is not due until the job is completely finished. Following these guidelines will help you select a contractor who will do quality work, and stand behind it. To learn more about finding a reliable contractor with an established business in our community, contact the Home Builders Association of Billings at www.hbabillings.net or call 406-252-7533.
