PARADE PREVIEW: Six homes ready to dazzle Ban Construction
By Darrell Ehrlick • dehrlick@billingsgazette.com Editor’s note: This is the second installment of a fourpart series showcasing this year’s Parade of Homes.
Newman Built Quality Homes
Brown Builders
If you can dream it, Billings home builders can build it. This year’s annual “Parade of Homes” sponsored by the Home Builders Association of Billings demonstrates that both the latest and greatest features in home construction and luxury can be found here. In its 26th year, the popular tour showcases a variety of styles, furnishing ideas and features that balance classic design and best emerging trends. This year’s trends feature a variety of home styles, from a cabin setting in Red Lodge to an urban townhome with a river view. Room to view Speaking of views, one of the emerging trends in this year’s group of stunning homes is plenty of windows. But, it’s not just about letting the sunlight in. Instead, builders are installing more windows, especially in lower levels in order to brighten the spaces. Reed glass makes an appearance in many houses. This designer glass allows for privacy in doors and windows, but still allows daylight. Attractive, horizontal transom windows can be used in bedrooms, closets and above doorways to allow daylight and brighten the room while allowing for privacy.
Tr ailhead Builders
Many of this year’s homes feature oversized, sliding barn doors or large patio doors that open up onto covered decks and patios. This has the effect of bringing the great outdoors inside, and maximizing the sunlight. It expands the size of the room and natural feel of the house. Builders are quick to point out people want to spend more time enjoying their yards, and want to dissolve the difference between being inside and out. Smart homes This year also marks a sharp rise in the number of complete home control systems that can be utilized through your mobile phone. Whether it’s a Smart Home system or similar design, many houses are hardwired to a central system that allows residents to turn on lights, set the temperature, even turn on the TV in the next room to the same channel. The systems also allow for greater peace of mind as home security systems make it easy to take a peek at what’s happening at home while you’re away. Drink up Continuing a trend that began a few years ago, many homebuilders are installing wet bars or even wine racking and coolers as part of the home. Entertaining isn’t just being done around the kitchen table, but having a drink with friends at home means having a space for that. One of the homes features a wine vault, one features a wine tasting area and another features a pub with a walkout deck.

Ban Construction
A big house for the Big Sky Country By Darrell Ehrlick • dehrlick@billingsgazette.com This is a big house for the Big Sky Country. It’s rustic meets modern meets Tuscany. Those styles come together with lots of light and large-beam and dark wood trim to make the home at 1110 Victoria Falls a customized masterpiece. The 5,100-square foot, two level house uses plenty of wood and stone to give it a timeless quality. From the entryway, a breathtaking great room with 20-foot ceilings welcomes guests as light from multi-storied windows streams in from the southwest. Dark wood surrounds the fireplace as the second-floor passageways look out in balcony style over the great room. Windows on both floors give the impressive space plenty of light and complement the dark wood and dark maple hardwood floors, not allowing the space to become too heavy.
The brick features along with the chiseled beams give the large space plenty of texture and character. Two stained alder double doors slide open onto one of four patio areas, allowing the living space to be expanded on those perfect Montana spring, summer or fall days. Off the side of the kitchen is a dining room that also capitalizes on the patio and the view. The kitchen itself has a six-burner gas grill, and darker cream color cabinetry that play off both the rustic and Tuscan feel. A granite countertop has a texture to the surface with flecks of gold, copper and silver, allowing it to match nearly any appliance. Slats between the cupboard cabinets allow for a wonderful wine rack that maximizes space. One of the crown jewels of this regal home is the kitchen bar island area which can

seat nine people. The island was made from a single tree and piece of wood. Two long boards make the top, while the underside retains some of the tree characteristics. The support post for the island has been handcrafted from the same piece of wood, truly making it a feature that cannot and will not be found in any other home. The house features a mainfloor and second-floor laundry. And each of the bedrooms has a full bathroom suite — a trend that’s becoming more popular, allowing for greater privacy for friends and family. The master bedroom has a door that leads out to a separate part of the wrap-around patio, and is ideal for enjoying the Big Sky sunsets. All the trim throughout the house picks up and complements the dark wood beams. The windows feature a stained alder. An extra wide stair-
case has dark-wood paneled wainscoting. An oversized window lets light cascade onto the stairs as you ascend them. Near the top, a separate set of stairs takes you to a bonus room which has marvelous north- and south-facing views that could be used as an office, library or extra bedroom. Throughout the house, windows provide plenty of light to balance the darker woods. A neutral taupe paint has been selected which helps contrast the dark wood without overshadowing it. The second floor houses three bedrooms and a halfbath, and the largest of the bedrooms could easily be classified as a second master suite.
The upper level also features its own pub, with a bar area and vinyl laminate that matches the hardwood theme throughout. Visitors will want to hoist a couple of pints as they look out through windows on the south wall. They can also go out onto the spacious second-floor deck that would be perfect to host friends. Below the deck, off the kitchen is a patio that is not only plumbed and wired for a grill and other accessories, it’s specially made for a smoker as well. “We wanted that big look and that big feel,” said Tana Ban of Ban Construction.

3302 Zimmerman Place • Zimmerman Place
Way up high in the Big Sky By Darrell Ehrlick • dehrlick@billingsgazette.com For most houses, you begin at the front door, or the great room, but for the Zimmerman Place, just an eighth of a mile east of the top of the welltraveled trail in Billings, you have to begin at the top — four floors above the lowest level, 52 feet below. You can’t miss the modern house, even with its subtle gray steel and brown wood exterior. And once you take in the panoramic views from the deck atop the roof, you won’t want to leave it. Every mountain range visible from Billings can be seen from that point. And the twinkling of the city lights glimmer each night. It’s not prairie modern — a style commonly used in Billings which incorporates contemporary elements, warming or even softening the clean linear design of the modern look. The Zimmerman Place, built by Newman Quality Homes, is thoroughly modern. Yet, as Andrew Newman planned, there are plenty of elements that make the modern design warm and inviting as he tried to give each room twists and characteristics that couldn’t be found anywhere else, just like the view from Zimmerman Place’s roof. The showpiece of the home is the staircase with its Douglas fir wood, walnut stained balluster slats and railings that extend from the floor to the ceiling — literally. They span the entire house, four floors.
And while the view from top is spectacular, the individual vistas are also impressive and inviting. The lowest level feels nestled into the rims, spying slightly the top portion of Zimmerman Trail. To the east, the Yellowstone Valley floor and downtown Billings open up into view. A covered patio allows one of two hot tubs (the other one is on the roof) to be nestled back, making for privacy and great views of the city. A custom-made floating triangular fireplace sits on the patio, a one-of-akind creation by Big Sky Backyards. Inside, off the patio there’s an expansive living room, with a side room that can be used for games or as a theater room. The lower level picks up the modern design with plenty of windows that allow for great southern-facing views as well as plenty of light giving it a clean, airy look. A wet bar with dark wood also picks up on the dark brown woods throughout the house. The lower level has one room which could be a bedroom, a full bath with tiled shower and an unfinished portion that can be easily used for storage, another bedroom or a vault. To the side of the stairs there’s a small nook, perfect for some bean bags or bookshelves as a kids area. The entire staircase is LED lit, and the house has a complete SmartHome system allowing control of everything from the TV to the ovens in the kitch-
Newman Built Quality Homes en. At night, large, horizontal stacked windows at the front of the house will showcase this amazing wooden masterpiece. The horizontal lines of the windows contrast the vertical lines of the ballusters. The main floor kitchen has elements that simply cannot be found in the area, and in some cases, in the country. All the kitchen cabinetry is imported from Italy and specialists from California flew into to supervise the installation. LED lighting is built into all of the cabinetry, so it’s impossible to see the lights; all of them are motion-activated and back-lit. All the major appliances are built into the cabinetry and have both soft-opening and soft-closing mechanisms. The kitchen also has a waterfall steel countertop, allowing for a nearly seamless, soft, yet strong look. There is a built-in espresso maker and four built-in ovens including two convection ovens, a convection oven/microwave and a full steam oven in which the homeowner can input the menu and it will instruct them to put in the different food at the right time.
Home Highlights 1 Douglas fir wood staircase 2 Custom-made floating triangular fireplace 3 Complete SmartHome system
The main floor has a master bedroom that looks across Zimmerman Trail into a natural rim area, meaning the Zimmerman Place has views of the city and downtown as well as secluded natural views. The master bedroom bathroom is truly the most modern part of the house — classic, imposing, clean and angular. The floor and part of the detail work includes a hand-cut marble floor. The three-sided shower has marble flooring. The space is clean, white and breathtaking. Pencil windows with opaque glass allow for privacy and daylight. A soaking tub makes the bathroom complete and a walk-in, walk-out closet and separate water closet complete the master suite. The third floor features versatile rooms that can be bedrooms or other space, each with an impressive view of its own to enjoy. The third-floor also boasts a thirdfloor master suite with tiled shower that is fully surrounded by windows which can be tinted for privacy. There is probably not a shower with a better view in the entire county.

Brown Builders
Contemporary show-stopper features something for everyone By Darrell Ehrlick • dehrlick@billingsgazette.com keeps the white and light from washing out the house, giving it depth and dimension. The hardwood floors in the great room and dining area are dark maple. The fireplace features black metal paneling that could easily pass for marble or granite. Instead the strips of dark metal are something unique, making it a focal point for the house. Builtin cabinetry makes for easy, out-of-the way storage and stainless steel shelving give it a modern look and matches the look in the kitchen. The main floor is open and flows without impediment to the kitchen, which has light quartz countertops with gray streaks nearly giving it a marble look. Stainless steel appliances complement the steel shelving that has been installed instead of cabinetry. Instead, a large white subway tile pattern extends not only as a backsplash but as the texture on the wall. It’s part farmhouse, part urban. One of the other unique features is the large middle
island which could easily seat more than six. Made in a T-shape, it takes the island concept and expands it, with plenty of room. It’s an inviting place that can be used as counter space or entertaining. It’s not as imposing as a table and beckons friends to gather in the kitchen. It doesn’t hurt that large windows open up to a big view of the Rims. Not to be outdone by the island or the stainless steel shelving, the walk-in closet is hidden, out of view, by push-in pantry doors. What looks to be a large pantry — maybe even a spice rack — is the entry into a generous pantry for storage. The main floor also features the master bedroom suite which has a separate walk-out door onto the covered, expansive patio. The bedroom has what appears to be a separate wet bar, but is in fact a coffee bar. It has several cabinets for storage, a sink and a small refrigerator. Builder Todd Brown said it’s one of the new concepts in building to have it

in the master bedroom. “This way a person can get ready, have their morning coffee, even sit out on the patio without ever having to go to the kitchen or walk through the other living areas,” Brown said. “It allows folks to get up, enjoy the day and start it out without being just in the bedroom.” The master bathroom which is attached is almost majestic. Sunlight streams through tall windows that shine onto an entryway. To the side are two walk-in closets. Beneath the windows is a soaking tub. Instead of having a double vanity, on each side of the tub is a separate his-and-hers vanity. The fully-tiled walkin shower has several heads and two controls and separate water closet allows for each person to have their own space and still share the room. The home’s lower level is meant to host family and friends. The living area has
room for couches and games, and it features a recessed theater screen with projector so that watching a movie can be done with great technology, but it also doesn’t consume the entire room. A wet bar with garden level windows drenches the gray counter tops with light. The countertop has a weathered wood pattern that looks very much at home in Montana. A refrigerator and wine cooler round out this bar that is also set back, not necessarily overtaking living or entertaining space. Two bedrooms share a full bath on the lower level. And Brown built the home with generous storage space and a hidden walk-in safe, another surprise. The Evening Shadow home has a separate laundry room, built-in bench and cabinetry and half-bathroom right off a three-car garage.
2016 PARADE 5311 EVENING SHADOW
Brown Construction has put in so many customized features in his Black Rock Estates home, it’s definitely got something for everyone to love about it. It may begin before getting inside in the ample half-acre lots that are situated just several minutes from the heart of Billings’ West End. Or maybe it’s a completely separate bonus room with its own entry above the garage. Or maybe it’s the built projector and theater wall in a spacious living room. The four-bedroom, 4,750 square foot home seems to have features that should surprise every member of the household. The home begins with the great room, an expansive room with a 14-foot vaulted ceiling and twin beams which have been stained dark. Throughout the home, windows let plenty of light brighten the house along with its white cabinetry and tilework done in grays and light brown. The wood and hardwood throughout the home is darker, richer and

cameras, two-way radios, MP3 players and iPods, tablets and more. As you clear out the attic, garage and storage closets, check for items that use rechargeable batteries. Why recycle Many people are unaware that batteries can contain metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium and nickel, which could contaminate the environment when improperly disposed. The batteries from these old devices should be recycled so that they do not end up in landfills.
Where to recycle Now that you’ve committed to (or at least attempted to) recycling your old stuff, you need to know how and where. For rechargeable batteries and cell phones, Call2Recycle has a network of more than 34,000 public collection sites located within 10 miles of 89 percent of consumers in the U.S. and Canada, including popular national retailers such as Best Buy, The Home Depot, Lowe’s, Sears and Staples. To find a participating location nearest you, visit call2recycle.org. Recycling rechargeable batteries can be a quick, easy and convenient part of almost any shopping trip. For other items, visit Recycle Nation or Earth911.com for a list of recycling options. As you get ready to fi x up your home this fall, think of how you can avoid green guilt and take that extra step to recycle rechargeable batteries and other household waste.

(BPT) - Fall signals the end of summer and the beginning of vibrantly colored leaves on the ground, pumpkin patches and refreshingly cooler temperatures. Early fall is also the perfect time of year to complete home improvement projects - the weather is mild, and you can clear your home of clutter before the chill of winter and beginning of the busy holiday season. While organizing your home during the fall season, it’s also a good time to get rid of old, obsolete electronics and appliances. Typically, a lot of people throw out items that can be recycled when cleaning or doing repairs around the house. This is mostly due to not knowing what, how or where to recycle. Approximately one-third (34 percent) of U.S. respondents suffer from “green guilt,” or the feeling that they could and should be doing more to help preserve the environment, according to a recent national survey commissioned by Call2Recycle, Inc. that analyzed consumer recycling behaviors. The good news is that consumers are putting green guilt to good use with four out of five (81 percent) saying they are likely to recycle batteries, cell phones and other small electronics, rather than throwing these items in the trash. What to recycle Do you ever ask yourself, “How do I get rid of this?” Or, “Should this be recycled or thrown in the trash?” Several common household items use rechargeable batteries, including cell phones, laptops, power tools, digital

Rimrock Builders
‘Montana Modern’ with plenty of original elements By Darrell Ehrlick • dehrlick@billingsgazette.com JJ Fuchs of Rimrock Builders calls it “Montana Modern.” It has the look and feel of a modern home, without being too angular or too sterile. Modern, but welcoming. Montana Modern — the kind of home that blends in well, but still has the classic clean lines and shapes found in a modern design. The home, located at 4908 Diamond Falls, has five bedrooms, three full bathrooms and two half-bathrooms. Oak hardwood floors add to the bright, warm exterior as you come in the front door which features five window panels. Full-length windows in the great room capture the sunlight as the tiled fireplace gives the room warmth and invites folks to gather. Custom stained alder in a panned ceil-

ing helps create an impressive space with 12-foot ceilings as well as depth, helping to offset the light, airy colors featured on the main floor. The kitchen opens to the great room, the dining area and the covered outdoor patio, allowing for a free-flow of people to eat, enjoy outdoors or gather around a sleek, horizontal fireplace. The kitchen has quartz countertops with an extra long island for entertaining or cooking. The floor-to-ceiling cabinetry allows for plenty of storage, and a walk-in pantry is set to the side, out of the way but still convenient, close to the garage as you haul groceries and supplies in. In addition to a sunny kitchen and living area, a large picture window sits above the built-in dining area buf-

fet, one of the home’s customized features. Even though it’s a modern design, it still incorporates many traditional features that homeowners want. To the side of the great room is space that can be either used as a formal dining room or a study. However, two French doors that match the entry door pattern can easily close off the area for privacy, making the room as functional or as formal as needed. It also picks up on the growing trend of having laundry facilities on both the upper and main levels of the house. The backyard continues with the modern-yet-classic approach with a covered patio and large boulder and stone accents in the yard. Several large boulders have been cut and placed, giving the yard instant character and texture. Customized stone and boulder benches form a ring around an exterior fire pit, inviting guests to enjoy even chilly nights beneath the Big Sky. Indoors, the master bedroom boasts a truly unique layout and modern concept. A stained alder theater wall serves as both a classic space for television and media. Behind it and out of sight is a built-in, customized double vanity that allows for both privacy and separation of the bedroom from the bathroom area. A built-in bench separates the water closet from a comfortable walk-in shower. The shower features a programmable six-head shower system that allows for the temperature and head settings to be controlled for a perfect shower every time.
A walk-in closet features a transom window maximizing the light, but allowing for privacy. The closet has also been customized with pull-down storage and ironing boards. The laundry facilities in the house are located close to the bedrooms on both the main floor and the lower level, designed so that laundry could be out of the way, and also closer to the bedrooms and the closets. “You don’t have to haul laundry across the house,” Fuchs said. The walk to the lower level can be experienced down a staircase that is wide enough to fit bulky furniture or other items, and has a midpoint landing. The family or living room has a similar dark-stained theater wall for the entertainment, and a great room that is big enough to accommodate chairs, couches and game tables. A large multi-paned window allows for plenty of light even on the lower level. This one-of-a-kind house features something very modern — both a wet bar and a wine rack and tasting area. The Diamond Falls house has designed space for wine racking and tasting, but also provides counter space for a full wet bar. The lower level features three bedrooms and a laundry room, as well as wrap-around storage that is finished beneath the stairs. “We want the features to feel very modern, yet also be comfortable,” Fuchs said.

1214 Longview • Northhill Estates
Tr ailhead Builders
Classic style, amazing views By Darrell Ehrlick • dehrlick@billingsgazette.com There’s no place like this home. Trailhead Builders have taken a lot in an established neighborhood west of Billings and built upon a traditional floorplan that focuses heavily on living and gathering space. This home is a breathtaking classic that is as impressive on the inside as it is from the view on the second-floor, all steel and Trex deck that looks toward two mountain ranges and the Yellowstone River. Coming in at nearly 6,000 square-feet of living area, the home at 1214 Longview, built by Trailhead Builders Inc., combines the best of the backyard with the best features on the interior.
The exterior is designed for maximum enjoyment and little upkeep as the stone and brickwork along with a steel roof provide a classic, refined look and nearly no maintenance. The style, with boxed metal windows and brick, is a combination of industrial and craftsman, explained builder Mark Allen. The metal and dark colors on the exterior match the deep, chocolate pub-styled engineered hardwood. The railings and doors throughout feature matching tones and finishes. The window and door frames are stained to match the rich dark tones. “You can’t beat the classic look,” Allen said.
The concept for the Longview home is, on one hand, traditional from the dining area to three bedrooms on the main floor. Yet, it’s the detail and larger-thannormal spaces that invite people to stay, spend time together and make this home instantly comfortable. The great room is designed to showcase the spectacular views to the south as visitors can see the Pryors and Beartooth Mountains on the horizon. The spacious backyard allows plenty of green space for privacy and play. Floor-to-ceiling windows capitalize on the southern light in the great room, the kitchen

area, the master bedroom and living room on the lower floor. But this house doesn’t just showcase the unique views. Two second-level decks encourage people to spend plenty of time soaking in the scenery, as well as a large patio on the lower level with a built-in fire pit. The large great room with its 14-foot vaulted ceilings, the large family room and even the kitchen area with a fireplace and breakfast area all beckon family and friends to gather and mingle while having plenty of space to move comfortably. The kitchen area features floor-to-ceiling windows for light as well as a patio entrance, making entertaining with food outdoors easy. Reed glass that is featured in the entryway is also picked up again in the kitchen cabinets and pantries. A walk-in pantry provides spacious storage with a sliding barn door of stained alder.
The master bedroom continues to provide amazing views to the south, and has extra features like two walkin closets. Both of the closets feature built-in shelving and hardware and one features a transom window, allowing natural light. It certainly doesn’t feel like a closet. In addition to a jetted tub, the master bathroom has an oversized steam shower with a rain head. Three different types of tile complement this luxurious, generous shower, perfect after a hard day of work or play. Three bedrooms are on the main floor with two bedrooms and a study area or den on the lower level. The two guest rooms on the main floor share a bathroom with a jetted, jacuzzi-style tub. The lower level features two bathrooms with tiled showers. The expansive liv-
ing area on the lower level opens up onto the spacious patio, allowing for a lot of family and friends to enjoy the great outdoors together. A wet bar stands at the ready for entertaining and two pocket doors open up into a home theater completely equipped with sound system and projector, as well as raised theater seating. The home is also furnished with a sound system throughout for entertaining or enjoying music no matter where you are. “What I love about this house is that there’s living space; there’s cooking space; there’s meeting space,” Allen said. “It’s all right here. It has everything for very comfortable living.” The house is also equipped with a 10-kilowatt solar system which, on a sunny day, will help power the entire house.

Kisling Quality Builders
By Darrell Ehrlick • dehrlick@billingsgazette.com It’s a contemporary classic that has much to offer with its lines and great views, as well as being hardwired for online technology. The home at 6106 Carlessa in the Silverado subdivision built by Kisling Quality Builders showcases the best in modern design and technology. The contemporary classic design begins with the entry into the great room, an expansive vaulted ceiling with dark stained alder paneling and crossbeam finishes. A floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace emphasizes the huge space, but the light tones of the stone and clean neutral walls draws your attention to the complete views to the west. Huge patio doors open onto a covered patio that takes an already great room and expands it farther. Opening the doors brings the outside in and would be picture perfect for entertaining friends and family. Two televisions are placed on the side of the fireplace, synchronized by the Complete 4 technology system wired throughout the house. This controls all systems from lights to security to sound system to television
channels all from your mobile phone. If that’s not handy, three iPads can be used to control the technology throughout the house. All of the house is wired and all of the wiring hidden for a seamless, cordless look. Doors throughout the house are a twist on a classic. The doors are paneled, but instead of having the panels made of carved wood, the panel portions are opaque glass which allow for light transfer while at the same time being private. They complement and pick up the pattern of horizontal windows, which makes this house feel light and open. The kitchen features a bank of windows that capitalizes on the western or evening sunlight. With the vistas and views in this house, it was custom made for those Big Sky sunsets and an ample backyard that is slightly terraced with landscaping facing west onto a a sea of green lawn. The kitchen’s cabinetry and island is efficient and well planned. A built-in microwave below the counter maximizes the counter space, and a patio door directly from the kitchen makes entertaining outside as easy as a

few steps. The covered patio area features a fireplace also with floor-to-ceiling stone work, symmetrically mirroring the great room.A built-in grill makes for easy outdoor cooking. The main floor also boasts a study area that’s enclosed with walls of glass, giving it that contemporary feel, yet ensuring privacy by the use of a middle panel of frosted glass. The master bedroom is segmented into a sleeping area, a bathroom with plenty of features and a walk-in closet with several windows nearly eliminating the need for anything but natural light. The master bathroom features a jetted oval tub, a walk-in shower and a double vanity, and off the
bedroom is a private porch entrance to the patio making it easy to sneak out to the fireplace on those cool Montana evenings. The walk-in shower is expanded to allow for five different types of heads and a programmable shower. It’s fully tiled and enclosed allowing for privacy while the other areas of the bathroom are used at the same time. Builder Jared Dickerson said the centerpiece of the home are features like the wood accent walls in the dining area and study or the full wrap-around customized railing that
encloses the staircase. It is completed with 1/2-inch metal rods and is a twist on the reed pattern. The lower level opens up into an equally expansive living room perfect for a home theater. The theater wall will allow for the largest screen, but provide plenty of room to do more than just watch a movie or take in a ball game. To the side of the living room is a full wet bar with a locking, walk-in wine vault. There’s enough room to have a pub table and wine racks to drink and store the finest vino. The
wet bar has an island for serving friends and family and tear-drop glass lamps make it feel like a place where everyone knows your name. The lower level also has two bedrooms with full attached bathrooms, called “suite bathrooms,” which allow guests or family the privacy of having their own bathroom space. Dickerson said Kisling Quality Builders has intentionally left part of the lower level unfinished. That space could easily be converted into another bedroom, hobby room or used for storage space.
