In an era earmarked by online shopping, couponing and BOGO sales, (that’s buy one, get one free for the lay shopper) it comes as a bit of a surprise that the vast majority of this year’s Readers’ Choice recipients distinguish themselves from the competition not by their blowout sales, not by free shipping and handling, but by something that too few businesses put a premium on these days—customer service. It’s an archaic concept to be sure, but it’s one long since lost in the realm of retail-a-palooza and grab bag shopping. Who needs excellent customer service if omitting it translates into savings for me, right? Wrong. The vast majority of Billings spoke up, and we heard them loud and clear. They said the reason they shop, dine and spend their money across our fair city depends largely on how they’re treated while they’re there. Billings, it seems, puts stock in quality over quantity and excellence over expedience. And the ones ahead of the curve, well, they offer both—savings and quality customer care.
A recipe for success
Mom and Pop stores still thrive in Billings. Take the Suds Hut, for example. There isn’t a 30 or 40-something-year-old in Yellowstone County who hasn’t celebrated a birthday or had a dinnerdate there. They’ve been offering the same delicious chicken and prompt, courteous service for more than four decades—proof positive that if you perfect your product and craft, customers will keep coming back. Then there’s business owners like Denice Johnson, owner of Neecee’s clothing store, and TJ Comstock, owner of Billings Hardware, who happily send customers to one of their competitors if they don’t stock
or can’t locate the particular item they’re looking for. Service for these business owners extends beyond the bounds of their storefront.
Tried and true
As a reader, this special section is the perfect service guide to keep at the ready. Need to know where to take your second-hand clothing? Have a short in one of your outlets and don’t want to be taken to the cleaners on a service call? Curious about who serves the best sushi in town? They’re all in there. The businesses and proprietors recognized in this special section have earned the trust of their customers and the respect of their peers. They are the crème de la crème of Billings business. What’s more, since we started the Readers’ Choice awards in 2000, several businesses have dominated their category and continue to win year after year. The next time you are shopping at one of these fine establishments, take a moment to congratulate the proprietors for a job well done. Most of them are as passionate about community vitality and volunteerism as they are about their bottom line.
A community that cares
Readers’ Choice is The Billings Gazette’s way of showing appreciation to all the local all-stars that elevate our fair city to new heights. Reader participation is crucial to this section, and the winners are a true reflection of your thoughtful dedication. We would like to extend a huge heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated and congratulate to this year’s incredible batch of winners. Here’s to many more years recognizing Billings’ best—we salute you!

As the temperature dips this season, Vallie recommends having your vehicle winterized— checking the fluid levels and battery. “These things are easy to neglect, but you don’t want to be caught out in the cold when they fail you,” he said. In addition to a wide range of mechanic services, he also makes strides to improve the community by giving away four or five cars each year to families in need. “I feel fortunate in this life, and it’s just one way I like to give back,” he said.

Meier Family Chiropractic 3419 Central Ave. Ste. C
BOB ZELLAR/Gazette Staff
Chris Dixon, Billings Wolves head coach, is this year’s Readers’ Choice winner for best coach.
Thank you Billings! For your Choice of Best Real Estate Agent 4 Years in a Row
Drs. Kim and Jeff Meier strive to do more than provide chiropractic adjustments for their patients—they want to share their view on overall wellness. Providing care for patients ranging in age from newborns to the elderly and everyone in between, Meier Family Chiropractic truly serves the entire family. “We enjoy helping our patients live a healthier, happier life,” Dr. Jeff Meier said. In Billings for nearly a decade, the staff at Meier Chiropractic is comprised of Drs. Kim and Jeff Meier and one other chiropractor. “We each offer our own niche specialty, whether it’s children’s chiropractic, prenatal or sports-focused,” Dr. Jeff said. Dr. Jeff Meier said the staff feels grateful to be recognized by the community for the Readers’ Choice Award, and thanks their patients for the continued support.
Coach
Chris Dixon, Billings Wolves Chris Dixon knows that there’s so much more to being a coach than simply executing plays. As the head coach of the Billings Wolves, Dixon tires to connect with his players on a personal level, transcending the typical coach/player dynamic. “I’ve been through some difficulties in my life, but those things help me find common ground with some of the players,” he said. “Overcoming adversity helps them become better men.” Dixon, a former Billings Outlaws quarterback who threw for more than 25,000 yards and 600 touchdowns during eight years in the Indoor Football League, retired as a player and took over as coach of the Wolves last year.

Dixon said the transition from coach to player was not a difficult one. “It was actually pretty natural because I did a lot of coaching growing up,” he said. Immersed in sports since his youth, Dixon finds that coaching is simply an extension of his love of the game. “Sports runs through me, it’s in my blood on my mom’s side,” he said. Dixon’s coaching philosophy is built on the cornerstone of self-reliance, first believing in yourself then taking that confidence and instilling it in others. And for him, the team—the collective—is always more important than the individual. “I want to thank our fans, our supporters and the city of Billings for voting for me—it means more than any MVP award. I am so honored to be recognized.”
Hair Stylist
Andrea Dahlquist, Carizzma Salon & Day Spa 517 N. 24th St. West Andrea Dahlquist has been a cosmetologist for only three years. Yet, this is her third year as winner in the “Hair Stylist” category—that’s how much her customers appreciate her work. Dahlquist, who was trained at Blanco Blanco School of Cosmotology, rents space at Carizzma Salon & Day Spa. As a fullservice salon, Carizzma offer services in nails, hair, electrolysis and aesthetician services. Dahlquist, who is trained in all salon and spa services, said that she specializes in hair color and extensions to temporarily add length or thickness. “I love helping my clients look their best—it’s what I do,” she added.

“The insurance business has been in the family since 1952,” he said. “As a youth, my grandmother had a tremendous impression on my life. I saw first-hand how successful she was, and at 10 years old, saw her ride in the Rose Parade on a float recognized as agent of the year for Farmers. That’s when I really started thinking I would be in the insurance business.” Inspired by family tradition, Daniel bases much of his business on mutual trust. “In order for insurance and financial services agents to properly recommend coverage and products, we need to know a lot about our clients,” he said. “We build our practice on trust and loyalty.” Daniel said he is honored to be selected as Billings’ Best Insurance Agent. “Thank you, Billings, for recognizing our agency,” he said. “We are blessed to have the opportunity to serve you.”

Young said a number of factors make Kibler & Kirch’s approach unique. “Our level of service and expertise is second to none,” he said. “Our professionals are perfectionists who won’t settle for anything less than world-class.” Young’s talented staff all bring something different to the table—design experience, an architect, even a librarian. “We all draw from one another,” Young said. “Between all of us we’ve amassed more than 100 years of decorating and design experience.” Kibler & Kirch has also celebrated seeing their work splashed across the pages of world-renowned design magazines and other publications these past few years, evidencing the design team’s vast talent and polished work. Young said he is pleased to invite clients to come visit him and his talented staff at their new design studio, located in the historic Stapleton building in downtown Billings. It is here where art, imagination and design are brought to life.
Massage Ther apist Theresa Hopkins, The Massage Company 511 N. 30th St.
Nurturing is in Theresa Hopkin’s blood. Although she originally planned to be a nurse, Hopkins turned to massage therapy because she could help people improve how they feel more quickly. “With massage therapy, you can see results so much faster,” she said, “plus it works so well as a preventative strategy. It’s more of an active instead of reactive treatment.” Customizing technique and pressure to her clients’ liking, Hopkins said clients are encouraged to make special requests. “Some days you might need a deep tissue massage, other times a gentler Swedish massage,” she said. “You might not always walk out with the same massage, but it will always be a good one.” Hopkins credits her knowledge of anatomy, experience working in a chiropractic office and hands-on experience treating injuries as special job skills. She extends great thanks to her loyal customers and says “I feel so blessed and thankful for my clients. You can’t get better loyalty than what I have.”

She still has clients who have been going to her since she started more than seven years ago. Many clients have become close friends. “We have experienced a lot of life’s milestones, shared lots of good laughs and chit chats, and I can honestly say I love my job and not many people get the privilege to say that.” Kinzie rents a room full-time at Luxx Salon and Spa. She stays busy incorporating glitter and color into everything she does. “You can never have too much glitter!” she says. When Kinzie isn’t beautifying her clients she loves spending time with her son Tucker and daughter, Zoey. “I can’t say thank you enough to my husband, my family, friends and clients for supporting me to get where I am today.”
Photogr apher
Clark Marten Photography 2606 Montana Ave. “It’s not what you have in life, but who you have in life that matters.” For photographer Rudi Marten, those words are much more than a saying – they reflect the essence of Clark Marten Photography. In business for 30 years, photographer Clark Marten recently moved his studio from his home outside of Columbus to a building on historic Montana Avenue. Clark’s son, Rudi, joined the family business a year and a half ago. Together, the creative duo produces amazing photography with a distinct flair. “Our work has a lot of depth plus an artistic edge blurring the lines between photography and art,” Rudi noted. For both Rudi and Clark, the goal with every wall portrait is that the eye first sees the faces, then radiates outward to the environment and finally the frame. “That’s our trademark,” Rudi said. Clark Marten also has credentials behind his artistry. Accredited by the Professional Photographers of America, he has earned the title Master Craftsman Photographer – the highest degree available. “We absolutely thank the community for voting us Readers’ Choice 2015 best photographer,” Rudi said. “Our success wouldn’t be possible without your support.”

High school graduation is one of life’s biggest milestones, and Rudi and Clark Marten of Clark Marten Photography have been capturing this important event for 30 years. Specializing in high school seniors and family photography, Clark and Rudi work hard to ensure each portrait uniquely captures their subject. Typically, that means creating edgier images for the student, and timeless images for the parents. “Our purpose is to help people feel great regardless where they are,” Rudi said. “At the end of a shoot, we want clients to say, ‘I like who I am.’” Capturing those images and having them in an album and on the wall is an important part of the process. “This generation is probably the most photographed of all time, but so many of the images are electronic, not accessible,” Rudi noted. Clark and Rudi also strive to make the entire photoshoot stress-free and fun. Locations vary from the studio to alongside the Stillwater River to the Marten’s farm where there’s a variety of vintage vehicles and other rustic memorabilia that can be integrated into the backdrop. “Every photo shoot is individual, representing who the person is in that moment,” Rudi said. Something everyone who comes to the studio can enjoy is Rachel Marten’s signature homemade chocolate chip cookies. Made fresh daily, they’ll make you smile with delight.

Sunset Bowl 1625 Central Ave.
It’s easy to see why customers flock to Sunset Bowl to celebrate one of America’s favorite pastimes—bowling. Open for business in 1955, Sunset Bowl offers 24 full-service lanes (and bumpers for the kids), full-service pro shop, birthday parties, snack bar, lounge with a full liquor license, banquet room in the lower level and arcade games. For those looking to mix things up a bit, Sunset Lanes offers disco bowling on Friday and Saturday nights. Sunset distinguishes itself from the competition by “paying attention to customers’ needs,” said long-time manager Jeanne Moses. “We get seniors, kids, families, players with Eagle Mount and COR, league players and everyone in between,” she said. League play for juniors, men and women is also offered. Bowling is as popular as it’s ever been—partly due to the ageless quality of the lifelong hobby. Moses said she’d like to thank Sunset Bowl’s following of loyal customers and league players and notes that recent renovations include new carpeting and fresh paint. “We’re a fun place to visit,” she said. “It’s so great to see someone’s face light up when they get their first strike.”

Golf Course
Pryor Creek Golf Club 1292 Pryor Creek Rd., Huntley In Montana, golf is not just a spring and summer sport. According to Joe Link, owner and general manager of Pryor Creek Golf Club, fall and winter are great times to get out and play. “We are open every day that there’s no snow on the course,” he said. “Folks love to get out during the off-season because it’s more relaxed. In the winter the ground is harder so the ball goes farther—it becomes a different game.” A four-time Readers’ Choice winner, Pryor Creek features 36 holes (18 for members and 18 open to the public), and the fairways are wall-to-wall grass—good news for all the slicers and shankers out there. “Fall is such a beautiful time and the course looks the best it ever has,” Link, who has owned and operated the course for 35 years, said. Each hole offers a unique view and experience, another reason golfers from Billings aren’t afraid to jump on the interstate and make the short drive to Huntley to play a round. Link credits the course’s dedicated staff and reasonable prices for their continued success. “We’re a golfer’s golf course,” Link said, adding that he encourages eager newbies to come out and give them a try, too. “This is a great place to get out, relax and have some fun.”

For more than ten years the trio, along with six other instructors have offered traditional martial arts training with a modern flair. “We are a family-friendly martial arts school,” said Allen. “Our customers find an open, non-intimidating atmosphere, where they can easily watch their kids and other classes. children and then decide to make it a family activity. Plus it is a great workout.” The academy works with both genders and children as young as “a mature three” all the way through adults of any age. All instructors are safe-sport and concussion trained. Three of the nine instructors are female, plus the academy offers women’s self-defense classes along with “stranger danger” instruction to children. Specializing in Taekwondo, which has more kicking, punching and sparring, and Judo, which is similar to wrestling, but includes arm bars and chokes the academy offers a wide array of training options. Each instructor has earned at least a third-degree black belt or higher with more than 20 years of experience. Although some students compete, even nationally, that is only one aspect; many train just for themselves. “We are so humbled by this recognition,” said Allen. “We are so proud of the students and families in our facility, along with the booster club. Many have become friends, even outside the school, and support each other. That truly reflects our family atmosphere.” Allen encourages all to consider visiting the Martial Arts Academy of Billings now or on April 2, 2016, for the 50th Annual Taekwondo and Judo Tournament, which honors late mentor, Grand Master Karlo Fujiwara.

“When our brides and grooms begin their happily ever after here, their story becomes part of our story. We love that,” said Depot Executive Director, Jennifer Mercer. With its vaulted ceiling, Roman columns and signature arched window, the grand “Passenger Station” has an elegant feel that envelops guests. The “Baggage Room” is the larger, reception-style room. This high-ceilinged space is the perfect “blank slate” that can be transformed into something unique and special for every bride’s wedding day, as well as other community celebrations. No two weddings look alike, which is part of the charm of this space. “Many of the original rooms have returned to their original use,” noted Mercer. The “ladies waiting room” is now used as the bridal suite. Additionally, with the active “Adopt a Chair” campaign, donors will have their name forever linked to the Depot. Each $99 contribution buys a new French Country style chair with the donors’ name on the back. Mercer expects the new event chairs to arrive by late fall 2015. Able to accommodate up to 350 guests, the Depot staff offer no-cost, in-depth wedding budget consultation, giving brides and grooms a great start in the overall planning of their special day. Call now to schedule a free bridal consultation (there are still a few slots open for 2016) and learn how the Billings Depot is the perfect place to create memories and “Reserve Your Space in History.” “We are so excited to receive this honor for the third year in a row,” said Mercer, “plus be named as one of the top 100 wedding venues in the U.S. for 2015. What an honor!”

Retirement Community
St. John’s Lutheran Ministries/ Mission Ridge Corner of Rimrock and Shiloh Road For 52 years, St. John’s Lutheran Ministries has served our community and lived our mission of providing living opportunities within nurturing environments of hope, dignity and love each and every day. The ministries have grown to meet the changing needs of our community and are driven by a love in Christ for those who most need to be lifted high. More than 600 residents call St. John’s home and enter the continuum of care at different levels. Once in the continuum, residents have priority access to care no matter what their needs are. In 1998 Mission Ridge, a joint partnership between St. Vincent Healthcare and St. John’s was welcomed into the family of ministries as the first Continuing Care Retirement Community in Montana. The family of ministries continued to grow and now serve the communities of Laurel (The Crossings) and Red Lodge (The Willows). In the spring of 2016, the WyndStone in the Billings Heights will be welcomed to the family. Ski Mountain/Resort Red Lodge Mountain 305 Ski Run Road, Red Lodge
Skiers (and boarders) rejoice! Following a long tradition, Red Lodge Mountain will once again open the Friday after Thanksgiving – which is November 27. Winner of the 2015 Readers’ Choice Award for Best Ski Mountain/Resort, Red Lodge Mountain offers an exceptional experience for every level of mountain enthusiast. Jeff Carroll, director of marketing, is excited about a new partnership between the mountain and Rossignol.
Billings Gazette 2015 Readers’ Choice
“Rossignol is a widely popular brand, and we’re bringing Rossignol back into our fleet of rental skis this year,” Carroll said. Not only that, but the mountain is working on a program which will enable new skiers to pay a flat fee which will include rental equipment and 6 ski lessons. Following completion of the course the participants will own their skis and boots and will have earned a Red Lodge Mountain season pass. It’s one more way the management and staff are making it easy for people to learn to ski. Another is the Training Team Program. Highly popular, nine-week the program lets youths ages 5 through 13 ski all day with an instructor and a group of peers. “Kids rotate through the instructors, and by the end of the program they show a lot of improvement,” Carroll said. “Plus they have a lot of fun.” Over the summer, crews worked on tree thinning and trail clearing projects, and created a little more gladed terrain in the Palisades area to enhance the skier experience. With seven lifts and 72 runs, there’s no shortage of snowcovered terrain for skiers young and old. Boarders can ride the many runs or experience the thrill and challenge of two different terrain parks. Those new to the sport can take advantage of the Learn to Ski package which includes a lift ticket, equipment rental and a lesson. “We get you on the mountain and turn you into a skier,” Carroll said. Apres skiing, guests can relax and warm up in the Bierstube, which features live music every Saturday night. “Red Lodge Mountain is a great place to ski, and very family-friendly,” Carroll noted. “We look forward to seeing our regular guests, and invite anyone interested in trying skiing or boarding to come to the mountain and experience the fun.” Carroll and the entire staff are thrilled to have won Readers’ Choice for best ski mountain/resort again. “We love our local skiers – Billings and Red Lodge – and appreciate their vote,” Carroll said.
Weight Loss Center
BalanceDiet 1025 Shiloh Crossing Blvd. Ste. 2 Toni Kramer is passionate about women’s health. As owner of BalanceDiet, Kramer helps women map out their weight loss success by using an integrated approach. “Working out is important, yes, but we sometimes forget that we need to care for our bodies with proper rest and nutrition the other 23 hours in the day,” she said. “We help people change their lives.” That’s where BalanceDiet comes in. Kramer’s staff of professionals evaluates each client individually and sets up a customized fitness and nutrition plan—allowing for real-life eating situations using restaurant and grocery store food. “We teach the ladies not only how to lose weight, but how to maintain it,” she said. Kramer said she suspects that they’ve had so much success with their approach because the environment at BalanceDiet is incredibly supportive and non-judgmental. Additionally, clients don’t need to travel to two separate venues for workouts and nutrition consultations. “It’s here, all under one roof,” Kramer said, adding that the businesses’ newest location, at The Shops at Shiloh, includes 40-60 classes each month, a group fitness room, plus full-service locker rooms including showers and a sauna. “We are so grateful to be in Billings and celebrating the start of our ninth year. I have met the most amazing women and feel honored to have been a part of their fitness journey,” Kramer said. “Their strength empowers me, and I couldn’t have done any of this without them and the support of my talented and dedicated staff.”

Air/Heating Contr actor Comfort Heating & Air Conditioning 9934 Interstate 90 Frontage Rd.
The people of Billings, great employees, above-par customer service and the best products have resulted in Comfort Heating & Air Conditioning’s seventh consecutive Readers’ Choice award. This second-generation, familyowned business is in its 32nd year serving Billings and the surrounding areas. Owners Jeff and Tony Scherr state that their greatest asset is their employees. “We truly have the best crew. From the installers, service technicians and office staff to the managers. Without these great people and their skills, our customers would not get the level of service that we provide. Great customers deserve great service and we strive to provide our best every day.” Their services include installation of complete heating and cooling systems, repair and maintenance of existing systems and also replacement of older, inefficient units to higher efficiency products. They offer Rheem and Armstrong heating and cooling products. In addition, Comfort Heating is an exclusive Mitsubishi Diamond dealer, offering the very best in ductless heating and cooling systems. These nontraditional systems are popular due to their efficiency and versatility, capable of heating or cooling just one room or an entire house. In terms of accessories, Comfort Heating uses their extensive training to offer customers humidifiers, electronic air cleaners and thermostats (including wireless thermostats that allow for Internet connectivity.) You can control the temperature in your home from anywhere in the world. But no matter the products they sell or how well they repair and maintain equipment, the number-one priority is their customers. “Customers make a business,” notes Jeff Scherr. “Without them, being in business is pointless.”

It must be the ice cream...!
We have been giving our customers free ice cream in the summers for many years, and we know they like it because they talk about it so much. But we know there are other things they like also... 1) They like to be treated with respect and dignity. We say we are ”Ladies and Gentlemen serving Ladies and Gentlemen” and we want every customer, when they leave our store, to leave feeling they have been treated honestly and honorably. 2) They like us to have their favorite brand of motor oil. That is why you see 125 different oils available in each of our stores. Oil companies didn't like that, but we explained that we work for our customers, not for oil companies. 3) They do not like us to ”hawk” things on them. Throughout the history of the lube center industry the biggest complaint that people have had is the tendency of companies - usually in big cities - to try to sell them extra services. So we don’t do that. We judge our success by how soon you come back, not by how much you buy. Providing our customers what they like includes Wilcoxin’s Ice Cream Bars and a lot more. Achieving what our customers want does not happen by accident; we work hard at it, and train hard also. We take this award as a sign that we are doing a pretty good job and say
THANK YOU to all of our friends and customers. Billings Gazette 2015 Readers’ Choice

For NAPA District Manager Dan Clevidence, there is no greater joy. “We take pride in providing a friendly staff and inviting store,” Clevidence said. “We thank all of our loyal customers who’ve come in through the years and allowed us to lend a hand.” Since 1925, NAPA has been offering exceptional product knowledge and customer service. Clevidence said he and his team strive to continue that legacy moving into the future. “Auto technology has changed so much in the past 20 years,” he said. “We make sure our technicians and staff are up to speed on the latest innovations in the auto industry.” In addition to assisting individual customers, Clevidence said he enjoys working handin-hand with several local small business owners and expressed immense gratitude in their partnership. “Thank you for believing in us and for allowing us to help you make your business grow,” he said. Clevidence said none of this would be possible without the help, support and expertise of his talented staff. “They make it all possible, and I can’t thank them enough.”

Billiards Store The Rec Room 945 Grand Ave.
Mike Guzman, owner of The Rec Room, has been playing pool as long as he can remember. Transferring his extensive knowledge and love of the sport to a business seemed only natural. He sells, in essence, family fun. Adding a dart board or pool table to a home provides a great venue for recreational family time at home. For more than 20 years, the Rec Room has provided quality billiards tables, equipment and accessories to Billings-area customers along with table tennis, foosball tables and both soft-and steel-tipped darts and boards. Stop in and stock up before your next big sporting event or football party—don’t forget to ask about your favorite NFL, MLB, NBA and collegiate merchandise.

Bretz RV & Marine 2220 Old Hardin Rd.
Since 1956, the staff at Brown’s Auto Service has been delivering on their promise to provide exemplary customer service at a fair price. As a locally-owned, family-operated business, Brown’s continues to raise the bar and expand their suite of services. From tires and transmissions to gears and gaskets, Brown’s has you covered. Regionally recognized as one of the best places to fix auto transmissions, the team at Brown’s focuses on doing all the little things right. “It’s a collective effort, one made possible by everyone working well together,” said owner Gordon Tryan. Of the company’s 44 employees, the average length of employment is 14 years. “We’re more than a team, we’re a family,” he said. On the cusp of celebrating 60 years in business, Tryan and his crew have stopped to examine the elements to the business’ continued success. “It boils down to trust, service and commitment,” he said. Trust, he said, has to be earned over a period of time offering exemplary service. Trust is also accrued through referrals. Tryan and his team know that when you refer a friend to them, you are also referring a part of yourself. It’s a promise he and his team take very seriously. Skilled, prompt and dedicated service is also a cornerstone to their business. Brown’s strives to ensure service long after the vehicle leaves the shop. The third element to their success—commitment—works several ways. Tryan is
The staff at Bretz RV & Marine know how to put the exclamation point on fun. They understand that Montanans appreciate the great outdoors and crave recreation. As such, they’ve cornered the local market on providing a suite of products and services unique to the region. Locally-owned and operated, Bretz RV & Marine carries everything from flat-bottom fishing boats to ski boats and everything in between. While the warm kiss of summer might now be in the rearview, the staff at Bretz RV & Marine is still quite busy. “We’re still taking appointments to winterize boats,” said co-owner, Dustin Bretz. “And that’s part of our commitment—to service the customer well beyond the sale.” Dustin and co-owner Tyrell Crowell are actively involved in the day-to-day operations of the business. “The thing I enjoy most about my job is working with customers, hearing all about their lake stories,” Bretz said. Inventory at Bretz RV & Marine is varied, but customers can expect to find trusted brands like Chaparall, Smoker-Craft, Thunder Jet, American Angler, Sun Chaser and more. More than one half of their inventory is used, and Bretz RV & Marine accepts tradeins toward your new boat or RV. “Come in and visit with us,” Bretz said. “You, the customer, are why we exist, and we’re so grateful that you’ve chosen to do business with us.”

Bottled/Specialty Water American Water Technologies 134 Regal St.
Crisp. Cool. Refreshing. American Water Technologies is in the business of making these words a tangible reality. Specializing in home and office delivery of bottled water in addition to other water treatment options, American Water Technologies has been a Billings staple since 1961. “Our main goal is to give customers options when it comes to water treatment solutions,” said Chad Hilario, office manager at American Water Technologies. “All it takes is a consultation to figure out the best water system to fit your needs.” American Water Technologies bottles around 1,000 fivegallon bottles per day at their Regal Street location, but they handle more than just bottling. American provides water for local dialysis equipment and offers brine reclamation systems for both residential and commercial water softening systems, among many other services within a 60-mile radius of Billings. The team at American Water can assist with installing whole-home filtration systems, reverse osmosis systems and water softeners. Some systems can even be rented at affordable rates. Hilario credits the dedicated team of delivery drivers and loyal customer base for the business’ success. “We want to extend a big thanks to our customers for nominating us. We greatly appreciate your support.”
Bridal Store Belle en Blanc 114 N. Broadway
Beautiful in white. That is the sentiment behind the name of downtown Billings’ premiere bridal boutique, Belle en Blanc. Offering a unique and special shopping experience for brides-to-be and their wedding party, Belle en Blanc offers bridal gowns, bridesmaid dresses, accessories and alterations—all in one location. Still a relatively new business in Billings, Belle en Blanc was conceptualized in 2013 when owner Taryn Reitz was wedding shopping with her sister and yearned for a boutique-style setting offering that “big-city” feel without extensive travel and inflated prices. In 2014, Belle en Blanc was born, and Reitz is thrilled to be her own boss while offering a unique and special service to area women. “I have always had a passion for customer service, weddings and fashion,” she said. “This boutique allowed me to do everything I love and help women find the most important dress they will ever wear.” Truly a bridal boutique, the inventory and experience at Belle en Blanc is second to none. Appointments are strongly recommended so staff can better serve you in creating that special feeling you have been dreaming of your entire life. With regard to dress trends, this season we can expect to see gowns with dramatic backs, non-traditional colors, bohemian styles and layered skirts, Reitz said. “Keep an eye out for convertible two-in-one gowns,” she added. Reitz said she feels honored to be recognized as the best bridal store in Billings. “I feel blessed to have helped hundreds of brides since opening and have also gained friends throughout the process,” she said. “There is no better feeling.”

Car Dealer – Pre-owned Hertz Used Car Sales 2851 King Ave. W.
It’s not a coincidence. It’s a testament to how much Hertz Car Sales cares about its customers. Winning a Billings Gazette Readers’ Choice Award 12 years in a row evidences the company’s commitment to integrity and superior customer service. “It’s simple, really,” said general manager Keith McNally. “We are honest and take care of people, operating by the Golden Rule.” Driven by three core principles—honesty, integrity and trust-- Hertz is known for its low-stress, no-pressure sales approach. Hertz urges customers to make the right pick and not a hasty one. Friendly and trained staff is at-the-ready to answer any questions you might have, and customers can always expect a fair deal. Hertz carries a variety of vehicle makes, models and types but can also pull inventory from five different stores. McNally opened the Billings store in 2003 and since then has experienced very little staff turnover—in fact, he often buys lunch for his employees and points out what they are doing right. In addition, he attempts to meet each and every customer at some point during the sales process. Those simple details create a dignified, trusting relationship that works. “I’m not in the business of selling cars, I’m in the business of caring for people,” McNally said. “When you take care of people, the money takes care of itself.”

When it comes to stains and spills, Brice Cady has seen it
As owner of Brice’s Masterclean, Cady has been cleaning carpets and mitigating flooring flood damage for 11 years. And although his Readers’ Choice win is for carpet cleaning, Cady’s suite of services extends to cleaning fabric, leather, upholstery, tile and grout. “I enjoy helping my customers keep a clean house and offer free on-site estimates,” Cady said. Cady has owned Brice’s Masterclean for 11 years but has 23 years of experience under his belt in the floor cleaning industry. During that time, he’s noticed an evolution in the types of cleaning agents. “We use products that are safe and biodegradable,” Cady said. “Today’s carpets stay cleaner much longer.” Depending on wear and material type, Cady recommends having your carpets cleaned every 6 months to two years. “Everything we do upholds the warranty on the carpet,” Cady said. To his loyal clients who’ve supported him through the years, Cady would like to extend his heartfelt thanks. “Thank you for your repeat business and referrals,” Cady said. “Also, thanks to my fantastic crew of technicians – it’s truly a team effort.

Children’s Consignment Store
Moms 2-B and Precious Seconds 1005 24th St. W. #5 It’s a fact of life. Plus, it’s also the motto of the 2015 winner of the Readers’ Choice children’s consignment store: Kids and expectant moms grow… their clothes don’t. That is the motto owner Dawn Ness came up with when she opened Moms 2-B then Precious Seconds 23 years ago.
17
“It’s smart to shop consignment stores, especially for growing children,” Ness said. “Our customers love bringing in their barely-used, outgrown items and trading up.” Moms 2-B and Precious Seconds carry gently-used maternity clothes, infant and children’s clothing and shoes, plus a wide variety of baby gear, strollers, car seats and gadgetry. Staff accepts gear all year long, but be sure to check with them prior to dropping off clothing, as it is received on a seasonal basis. Moms 2-B and Precious Seconds encourage customers to “like” them on Facebook and follow their Daily Deals. They are currently preparing for a remodel and will be having a “Bundle Up and Save” sale very soon. Ness would like to take this opportunity to thank her loyal following of customers and their families. “It’s our customers who have given us longevity in the community,” she said. “We thank you and look forward to watching another generation grow at Moms 2-B and Precious Seconds.”
Children’s Photo Studio Jana Graham Photography 2301 Montana Ave. #201
Emotion is elusive. But photographer Jana Graham artfully captures it between smiles, snaps and clicks of her camera. “My favorite part of what I do is forming meaningful, personal connections with my clients,” Graham said. “It’s so fulfilling and rewarding to know that they allowed themselves to feel vulnerable in front of the camera—that they shared how they truly are as they interact with their loved ones. That is magical.” Graham, who has been in business in Billings for 10 years, offers a “boutique photographic experience” in that she customizes each session to the preferences and personality of each client. Graham’s kind and tender touch makes her a perfect choice for newborn and children’s portraits, but she also specializes in commercial photography, graduation portraits, special occasion and wedding pictures. “Ultimately, my goal is to help them create a lasting piece of inspirational art that they can put up in their homes and feel good about every time they see it,” she said. “I want my photos to have that forever-quality.” Seeing the looks on her clients’ faces after a big reveal from a photo session is Jana’s favorite part. “I love seeing their faces light up, especially mothers looking at photos of their children,” Graham said. “It warms my heart and makes me feel like I’m a part of something bigger than myself.” Graham thanks her loyal customers—many of them repeat clients who’ve been photographed in various phases of their lives—for her Readers’ Choice win. “Thank you so much—I feel blessed to have worked with every one of you,” she said. “It’s an honor.”
Clothing Boutique Apricot Lane Boutique 1603 Grand Ave. Ste. 100
In era of big box stores and bargain bin shopping, one thing gets lost in the experience—a personalized touch and customer care. “At Apricot Lane, it’s less about the clothes and more about the shopping experience,” said owner Michelle Dowler. “We personally get to know each of our customers and style them so they leave feeling even better about themselves.” This boutique-style shopping experienced is customercentric. “I always tell my staff that we’re not order takers,” Dowler said. “At Apricot Lane, we offer style and pairing suggestions that the customer might not have ever considered.” Dowler credits her talented, personable staff with the boutique’s continued success. “I have a great core group of people working here,” Dowler said. “We’re less like a staff and more like a big family.” Several of the same employees have been at Apricot Lane since its opening five years ago, and the team strives to accentuate the best features of each customer. “Our favorite feedback from customers is when we hear ‘I would have never tried that on by myself, but I love it,’” Dowler said. Dispelling the notion that only women in their 20s or 30s can shop at Apricot Lane, Dowler said she carries inventory for all ages, sizes and budgets. “We carry shirts that are $19 to dresses that are $250,” she said. “We’ve definitely got something for everyone.”
Clothing Store—Men’s Jasons Clothing for Men 2564 King Ave. W.
Since 1936, four generations of the Alweis family has been making Billings gents just a little more dapper by providing personally selected and high-quality merchandise. Owner Sheldon Alweis enjoys working one-on-one with clients. “We present them options and style to achieve personalized looks, emphasizing fit and feel,”Alweis said. Offering a wide range of inventory—suits, sport coats, blazers, slacks, sweaters, soft knits, denims, shoes and more—Alweis encourages newcomers to come by Jasons to discover the newest items. Alweis said that his favorite part about owning a clothing store is “helping a customer find the perfect outfit and seeing them smile as they leave Jasons.” Knowing they will enjoy wearing their newly-purchased items is the icing on the cake. “At Jasons, we focus greatly on personal, one-on-one at-
tention,” Alweis said. “We know several of our customers on a first-name basis, and if we don’t, we will by the time you leave.” Alweis said he and his staff are honored for the Readers’ Choice award. “Our clients aren’t just clients, they’re our friends,” Alweis said. “We greatly appreciate your business and are honored to be chosen.”
Clothing Store—Women’s Neecee’s 2821 Second Ave. N. 1027 Shiloh Crossing Blvd.
The clothing store responsible for making the term “outfitting” a verb is now twice as good with two locations. Neecee’s flagship store is located in downtown Billings, and their new location, open since last November, is nestled in the Shops at Shiloh Crossing on Billings’ West End. While each store falls under the unique, colorful Neecee’s umbrella, Johnson said they’ve maintained their own identity. “Shopping downtown is a lot like coming home, while a trip out to Shiloh Crossing is more like a boutique adventure,” said Neecee’s owner, Denice Johnson. Johnson and her staff absolutely love helping customers discover their perfect look, and offer a wide range of apparel, accessories, shoes, jewelry, personal care products and more. “At Neecee’s, we strive to create a memorable shopping experience and want customers leaving feeling better than when they arrived,” Johnson said. “It’s all about the needs of the customer.” And sometimes, this means sending the customer elsewhere. “If we don’t have something the customer is looking for, we try our best to help them find it somewhere else,” Johnson said. Relationship building is important to the staff at Neecee’s, and Johnson is often surprised to find that a customer who she thought was a friend of an associate is actually a new acquaintance. “Our staff is incredible at making customers feel comfortable and relaxed in the store,” Johnson said. “I appreciate them so much.” As the weather cools this fall and winter, expect to see a barrage of plaid shirts paired with soft leggings and booties, patterned socks, patterned tights and cuddly cardigans lining the aisles at Neecee’s. “I love change and I love color,” Johnson said—and truly, that’s what fall is all about. Johnson credits her talented, dedicated staff with Neecee’s continued success. She also wants to thank the dedicated repeat customers—and those curious enough to step into Neecee’s for the first time—with this Readers’ Choice win. “None of this would be possible without you,” she said.

Working in a quickly-evolving technical world, the Rimrock team is constantly handling new and unique requests. “One day we’re making your iTunes stream through your television, the next we are configuring 20 computers to share data and printers,” Dantic said. “And in between, you’ll find us removing malware, the source of those pesky ‘popups,’ from a laptop or installing a new family computer.” Dantic says the key to Rimrock’s success has been excellent customer service, fair pricing and having a staff of fun, professional technicians. “When you call, you’ll get a live voice. When you visit, it’s a warm welcome. We’ll stay open late or make a weekend appointment if necessary to ensure that our customers get the best service at an affordable price,” Dantic said. As a family-run shop, Dantic and his wife Lindsey want to let their customers know how much they appreciate them and their continued business.

Custom Fr aming Store The Frame Hut & Gallery 1430 Grand Ave.
Frame Hut & Gallery is a one-stop-shop for your home and office walls. New owner Helen Tolliver is proud to offer custom framing, artwork and a suite of other home décor options to her customers. “Our mantra is ‘bring it, frame it, love it,’” she said. “We love bringing people smiles and having a hand in helping customers showcase something they treasure.” It is Frame Hut’s customer-centric approach to sales that has allowed them to stand the test of time, Tolliver said. “I engage the customer by asking questions like ‘what do you like most about the piece’ and ‘where do you plan to display it?’” Tolliver said. “Answers to these questions help gently guide the design process.” And while the Frame Hut does specialize in custom framing, it’s more than that—it’s an art gallery and unique home décor store. Displaying the work of talented regional artists is also something Tolliver enjoys, reveling when a group of friends comes in for the day to simply browse.
“Art is uplifting,” she said. “It’s food for the soul, and I so enjoy being a part of that process.” More than anything, Tolliver and the staff at Frame Hut wants to extend their thanks and gratitude toward their customers. “Thank you for trusting us, for choosing us,” Tolliver said. “We’re here to serve you.”
Day Spa Service
Sanctuary Spa & Salon 1504 24th St. W. Sanctuary has been shouldering your stress and rejuvenating your wellbeing since 1998. Offering a wide range of customized hair and spa services, Sanctuary Spa & Salon uses Aveda products to create the results and experiences their guests desire. Busy women from all walks of life make up the majority of Sanctuary’s clientele. Having very little time for themselves is one of the most frequent challenges for female guests. This year, Sanctuary has added a shoulder massage with all of their manicures to increase their relaxation. Sanctuary owner Kris Carpenter says the spa has seen continued success because it’s more than a spa—it’s “an experience center.” For 2016, Sanctuary is creating a “mini service” menu so the guest can add a little spa to any service. One of the most popular offerings at Sanctuary is “Last Minute Appointments.” Guests sign up with their email to receive a list in the morning of what appointments are available that day for a 20% discount. The appointments have been so popular that they sell out within the first hour! “Receiving spa services is just one simple way that people can look inward, relax and take time for themselves,” she said. “Our caring and dedicated staff loves being a part of taking care of them.”

day appointments and sedation dentistry available. The doctors on staff are highly-trained and use the latest technology, including 3D imaging. The scope of services includes everything from routine dental care to implants and orthodontics to pediatric specialists. Brewer Dental Center is now offering the Brewer Dental Advantage Plan. For an annual fee, patients can enroll in the plan, potentially saving thousands of dollars in dental care. “For example, the regular price of an adult cleaning is $102, if the patient is a member of the Brewer Dental Advantage Plan the cost is just $69,” Dr. Brewer explained. Savings can quickly add up, as every dental procedure is reduced between 10 and 50 percent with no annual cap. In addition to providing comprehensive dental care, the doctors at Brewer Dental Center are committed to giving back to the community. One day each February, the group takes part in Dentistry From The Heart where the dentists and hygienists offer free dental services to those in need. “It’s a national program, and we’re the nation’s largest single provider for Dentistry From The Heart in terms of dollars donated and the number of patients cared for,” Dr. Brewer said. This year Brewer Dental served 374 patients and donated $145,794 in FREE dental care bringing the 10th anniversary total to 2,943 patients and $953,631 in donated dentistry. It’s all part of Brewer Dental Center’s ongoing commitment to offer convenient, affordable care. “And by adding the Brewer Dental Advantage Plan, we are able to give the consumer the final tool they need in terms of affordability,” Dr. Brewer said.

Flooring Store Carpet One 505 S. 24th St. W.
When Randy Mostad started at Carpet One, teal green carpet was en vogue. Twenty years later, the business owner said that as time has ebbed on and styles continue to evolve, one thing remains consistent at Carpet One. “It’s our commitment to our clients,” Mostad said. “Our mantra is ‘any job worth doing is worth doing well,’” he said. This encompasses the smallest of bathroom projects to whole-home floor-scapes. “Whatever job we are focused on is the most important job that day, and we want our customers to feel that,” Mostad said. Featuring a wide range of flooring options from hardwood to tile, carpet and Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT), Carpet One has broadened its merchandise scope in response to customer needs and wants. “Twenty years ago, flooring sales was mostly carpeting with some hardwood and some tile,” Mostad said. “Now, sales have shifted to about 60 percent hard surface (hardwood, LVT, tile) and 40 percent carpet.” Variety isn’t the only selling point for customers browsing at Carpet One. “We’re perfectionists when it comes to the installation process,” Mostad said. When technicians remove old carpet or flooring, they meticulously clean floors with a HEPA-vac. Next, the floor is sprayed and sealed with an antimicrobial layer that repels dust, pollen and eliminates pet odor. “When the flooring is down, you have a brand new room,” Mostad said. Mostad wants to extend thanks to his talented staff, who he said exemplifies the highest levels of integrity. Additionally, Mostad wants to graciously thank his customers and those who voted for Carpet One. “I don’t know how to quite put into words the amount of appreciation we feel,” he said. “Thank you, so much, for trusting us and believing in us.”

For three generations, the Gainan family and valued employees have provided unique, high-quality floral bouquets, gifts, home décor and nursery products to Billings shoppers. Yet, from day one, their focus has been on customer service and 100 percent customer satisfaction. Gainan’s unique floral creations are perfect for weddings, sympathy, birthdays, anniversaries, special occasions or just to say “I’m thinking about you and want to brighten your day.” The staff’s dedication to service shines through the moment customers walk through the door and are enveloped with the delicious fragrances of the season. “We work hard to create a unique, inspiring shopping experience,” says president Jim Gainan, noting that several people wander about the store or visit the greenhouse during their lunch hours, sometimes just as a way to relax or get away. This is just one of the many ways Gainan’s customers become their friends. Soon to celebrate 65 years in business, Gainan and his team are proud to offer the same exemplary quality and customer service provided by Jim’s grandparents six decades ago. “Customers keep us going,” Gainan said. “It’s a joy to be a part of their lives throughout all the different occasions.” Gainan also reinforces the notion that it’s OK and encouraged to pick up a bouquet for yourself. “Flowers are power-packed little joy makers,” Gainan said. “It’s been scientifically proven that flowers enhance mood, so treat yourself to a fragrant bouquet.”

Home Builder/Contr actor Classic Design Homes 1605 Shiloh Rd.
Classic Design Homes has become the top custom home builder in the State of Montana by focusing on collaborating with the homeowner to develop a design that suits them perfectly. The in-house design process focuses first on listening to the homeowner’s preferences, then on working toward a design that maximizes functional space, with the goal of providing, “more home for the money.” General Manager Doug Wild oversees each detail of the design process and the construction of each home, through the final walkthrough. Classic Design Homes is particularly known for extra features and has a tremendous focus on outdoor living. “Planning the outdoor living along with the rest of the design makes complete sense,” says managing partner Mark Dawson. “It seems like too often outdoor living is an afterthought, but most of us love to spend a lot of time outdoors. We decided a few years back that we need to work harder on making that space as awesome as the rest of the home.” The team at Classic Design is proud to have been involved in the construction of many beautiful homes, but even more proud to have become friends with so many of the homeowners; they have started a tradition of holding a Homeowner Appreciation Party each year to give thanks and to keep in touch with the folks they’ve built for.

Goldsmith Gallery 903 Shiloh Crossing Blvd. Scott Wickam is a stickler for quality. His passion for superior diamonds and fine jewelry shines through in the exquisite array of pieces displayed in Goldsmith Gallery’s beautiful 7,500-square-foot showroom. Not only is the jewelry stunning, the gallery itself is a show-stopper. In fact, Goldsmith Gallery placed third in the nation for “America’s Coolest Stores,” as published in Instore magazine, a national publication for jewelry store owners. Starting in the business at age 15, Wickam has amassed a lifetime of expertise. That experience has earned him direct access to diamond dealers in Antwerp and to the best brands of jewelry and watches. “At Goldsmith Gallery, we carry a large variety of items – from brilliant diamonds to Swiss-made watches, Pandora to pearls,” Wickam said. In addition to retail sales, the store has in-house jewelers who can create stunning, custom-designed pieces or repair heirloom jewelry. “More young people want to create custom jewelry pieces,” Wickam noted. “They pick unique aspects of different bridal rings, and our in-house goldsmiths combine those elements into a one-of-a-kind piece.” While many people think custom jewelry is more expensive than stocked items, Wickam said that isn’t the case. “Recently, a couple celebrating their fifth anniversary

Bridal customers make up a large segment of Goldsmith’s business, and Wickam and his well-trained staff work hard to help people learn about diamonds – the cut, clarity, color and carat weight – and how to select a stone that perfectly fits their desire and budget. “This has been a huge year for diamonds,” Wickam noted, saying he recently returned from a buying trip to Antwerp and is planning to return again in November to buy more. By going directly to the source and taking advantage of weaker markets in Asia, Wickam said is he able to buy better than ever at the overseas diamond market. And Goldsmith’s selection of diamonds is second to none. “I hand-select every single stone,” he said. Wickam’s strong relationships with diamond cutters ensures that he purchases only the best stones, and that he can pass along superior pricing to his customers. While brilliant white diamonds remain the favorite for engagement and wedding rings, colored diamonds have grown in popularity. Pink, blue, yellow, green and even brown or “chocolate” diamonds have been fashioned into stunning necklaces, bracelets, earrings and more. Recently, Goldsmith Gallery purchased all remaining Yogo sapphires from the Yogo Mine, which has since closed. “We are re-making many Yogo designs to have available for Christmas,” Wickam said. “When they’re gone, that’s the end of the supply.” As the holiday season approaches, Wickam and his staff are pleased to announce a number of special events featuring LeVian, John Hardy, Fredrick Sage and Tacori. In addition to the events, Wickam invites everyone to come in and look over the large showroom filled with exquisite pieces. “We can help you create a Christmas wish list ensuring you get the perfect gift,” Wickam said.
Attention to detail, top-notch service and the newest styles and materials combine to create a unique look catered to you. What’s more, Wylie and his team know that every home, every kitchen, every cabinet and each customer is unique. “We find that it’s a humbling experience to be invited into a customers’ home and then trusted to help them transform an ordinary kitchen or bath, into an extraordinary living space that they will love living in for years to come,” he said. Rimrock Cabinet Co. is very proud of their talented team of design and construction experts that work hard every day to meet the needs of every customer, Wylie said More than anything, Wylie said he enjoys working with customers to bring their ideas to life. “So often, customers come in simply knowing that they need the elements to a new kitchen,” he said. “We work together and formulate a design plan that piques the customer’s interest and works with their budget and lifestyle,” he said. Wylie said he’d like to take the opportunity to thank his loyal customers, area builders and dedicated staff for their continued support.

Lingerie Shop
TLC Lingerie 1400 Broadwater Ave. Linda Cetrone Levy and the expert team at TLC Lingerie have a niche market—and women know it. For 17 years, TLC has been giving area women a genuine fitting experience. “We want everyone who buys a bra to have it fit properly and get reasonable wear out it,” Cetrone Levy said. “When a bra fits properly, it lasts longer.” With band sizes from 30-54 and cup sizes ranging from A

to OO (and underwires up to a J-cup), the options may seem endless; yet Cetrone Levy’s team knows their product and their clientele—they are tireless match-makers. In addition, the team knows their products so well, that most clients who come in to “have a fit” find extra time on their hands. These trained professionals are also excellent at working with women who’ve recently experienced breast augmentation or reduction. “After a procedure like that, it can sometimes be challenging finding the right fit,” Cetrone Levy said. “We will work with you to find a product that not only looks great, but feels great, too.” TLC offers a wide selection of swimsuits, including mastectomy suits, in sizes 6-32 throughout the entire year. Pair that new suit with a stylish cover-up and new lingerie for your next trip. Or, for nursing moms, stop in to see TLC’s selection of comfortable nursing bras—hard to find elsewhere in Billings. Another thing that sets TLC apart from the competition is that they keep a personalized card on file for each client— outlining past purchases, sizes and style preferences. As Readers’ Choice winners since 2009, TLC meets their goal of individualized attention, style variety and product quality for women throughout Eastern Montana.

These highly trained professionals attend appointments in pairs for safety and to double check one another’s work. Fox is also proud of the fact that someone is available at the other end of the line almost 99.9 percent of the time to take your appointment, she said. Purple Cactus also offers clients a satisfaction guarantee. “We consult with clients beforehand to get a precise understanding of their wants, needs and expectations,” Fox said. “Then we do our very best to meet and exceed those expectations.” Fox added that she appreciates her trained staff and loyal customers, thanking them from the bottom of her heart.
Mattress Store
Mattress King 17th St. & Grand Ave. 24th St. & King Ave. 311 N. 7th Ave., Bozeman No one knows the importance of getting a good night’s sleep better than Jay and Mary Hoffmann. As owners of Mattress King, the couple along with their courteous, well-trained staff, have been helping people find the right bed for more than 29 years. And as Jay points out, the business is about much more than selling mattresses. “We are absolutely committed to offering our guests the very best products and the highest level of customer service,” he said. That commitment is embedded in the company mission statement: To change people’s lives by helping them experience the best sleep possible and make a positive difference in their lives while serving
them each step of the way. According to Jay, that’s not just a saying on a plaque. “Every team member memorizes the mission, and we talk about it every week during meetings,” he said. Walking into a showroom and seeing dozens of mattress sets can feel overwhelming for shoppers. And after people lay down on five or six different mattresses to test them, they become dulled to the experience. That’s just one reason Mattress King has invested in Bed Match System technology. “The Bed Match System uses a diagnostic mattress which takes more than 1000 calculations and measurements. Based on those calculations, we can narrow down the top four or five mattresses for that particular guest,” Jay said. Using technology to find the best fit for an individual not only makes the process of selecting a mattress much easier, it also ensures a better night’s sleep. The process of finding the best mattress starts with excellent sleep consultants. Every potential team member undergoes a rigorous hiring process, which includes a background check and a series of interviews. “Having a very thorough hiring process is not new for us,” noted Jay. “We have followed this strict protocol for many, many years.” Mattress King has also set a gold standard for delivery service. “We call ahead and set a specific time for delivery. When our delivery staff arrives, they roll out a carpet and wear booties over their shoes to minimize tracking anything into the home. They also wear white gloves to set up your new mattress. When we’re done, we use a Swiffer duster or vacuum cleaner to tidy your floors before we leave,” said Jay. From helping guests find the perfect mattress to making deliveries and every step in between, the leaders and team at Mattress King deeply scrutinize every detail to ensure guests receive the highest level of service. “We carry the best brands at the best prices and give you a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee,” said Jay. “Why would anybody want to buy a bed anywhere else?”

Medical Spa
Central Wellness 1010 Central Ave. #2 There’s an old adages that states: beauty starts within. Janine Griffin and Ali Mitchell, co-owners of Central Wellness, base their business on that premise. “Central Wellness is a place to visit and find wellness from the inside out,” said Griffin. “We deliver more than treatments, we want to make sure that each client has a relaxing experience designed to meet his or her unique wants, needs and expectations.” Central Wellness fuses medical care with spa services, offering massage, body treatments and facials along with services to help clients age gracefully, such as botox and, more recently, bio-identical hormone therapy. “Our mission is to help you age gracefully,” said Mitchell. “We want you to enjoy how you feel and look as you age.” Central Wellness staff recently introduced a weight management program. Run by a nurse practitioner, the program helps women focus on a low calorie, protein diet along with strategies to correct behaviors to help keep weight off. Mitchell researches and embraces new technology, incorporating techniques and products that benefit their clients the most. “This is more than a business for us—it’s about building relationships and helping each person that comes in our door, “said Mitchell. “Each client has a unique story that we get to be part of.”

Smith, who specializes in gel polishes, has updated the salon and expanded the nail space with room for five manicures and two pedicures. Barnett Opticians 2203 Broadwater Ave. Syl Schied and the staff at Barnett Opticians can give you a clear outlook on the world. “Technology for creating and fitting lenses is growing by leaps and bounds,” said Schied, owner of Barnett Opticians, “and we use it to create the crispest vision with the best fit for our patients.” As a Billings optical mainstay since 1952, Barnett Opticians has serves multi-generational customers. “It’s our customer service,” said Schied of the business’ success. “We take the extra time to be sure that everything is the best it can be. Plus, we have many long-time, experienced employees.” Barnett Opticians offers the latest technology and the best choices from prescription sunglasses, safety glasses to sports goggles. Ultra-thin, non-glare, high-definition digital lenses give vision a “wow” factor.
“Truly, you can see the difference. There’s nothing in eye care that we cannot do,” Schied said. But, the best part is matching clients to the right combination of eyewear for their lifestyle and vision, he added. As a ten-time Readers’ Choice winner, there’s no doubt that Barnett Opticians knows eyewear.
Paint Store
Ace Hardware King’s Ace Hardware: 1551 Zimmerman Trail 2264 Central Ave. 4170 State Ave. 415 SE 4th St., Laurel Heights Ace Hardware: 1547 Main St. Most know Ace as the helpful place. But there’s no doubt it is also the “answer place.” With four family-owned Ace Hardware stores in the area, chances are there’s one in your neighborhood. “We solve our customer’s problems by working with them until we find a solution,” noted owner Skip King. Ace carries several major brands of high-quality paint including Benjamin Moore, Valspar, Clark & Kensington and their own Ace brand, plus all the sundries related to any painting project. Plus, they have unbelievable expertise. “Penny (Anderson), the “Paint Lady” is very good at her job,” noted owner Bob Hanson. “She’s extremely adept with color-matching or helping our customers solve their paint issues.”
Billings Gazette 2015 Readers’ Choice
Anderson, who has more than 25 years of experience in the paint industry, knows both the product and Ace customers well. “You have to be instinctive and build a relationship, while imparting years of knowledge and give the customer what they are asking for,” she said. “For example, when it comes to color-matching, our paint will not just be good, it will be perfect.” Other, long-time, customer-oriented employees, one since 1983, add to the entire friendly feel at Ace. “Our clients tell us they come here for the customer service,” Anderson said. “I love my job and we are the experts here; if customers need questions answered, they will get that at Ace.”
Pet Groomer
Groomingdale’s Salon & Paw-tique 1436 Central Ave. Humans have Bloomingdale’s. In Billings, dogs and cats have Groomingdale’s Salon & Paw-tique. It is, likely, a fair trade. Owner Stacey Hess is the only groomer in Billings who is certified by the National Dog Groomers Association of America; in fact, she is one of only three in the entire state. “At Groomingdale’s we are pet stylists—we tailor the service to both the pet’s looks and also to his or her health issues like nails and skin,” Hess said. For example, schnauzers’ hair continues to grow, even past a certain length, like humans’ hair. If it is not cut, the dog will have problems like matting and dander, even in winter. “I am passionate about pets, and to me, grooming is an art form,” Hess said. “It’s more than just a haircut, it’s a way to make them look their best, and that’s why continuing education is so important as is building a trusting relation-
ship with our clients.” In business since 2011, Hess has recently added cat grooming and on-site pet day care. She noted that cats are cared for away from dogs (unless specified) and both the indoor and outdoor spaces are designed with the dogs’ comfort in mind, including either ortho-mats or synthetic grass.

Exotic Pets also carries pet accessories and food, including the live variety like crickets, mice and flies. In addition, they offer dog grooming. “Our groomer has been here 21 years and we have another employee who has been here more than 25,” Leiseth noted. “Our staff is excellent and makes us stand out; we really know our customers. Knowledgeable, friendly service such as this has earned Exotic Pets the Readers’ Choice Award for the past five years. Exotic Pets is also known for its annual hamster races. Longevity matters. Wrights Custom Repair has it in spades. Billings Gazette 2015 Readers’ Choice
Food & Drink All-around restaur ant Jake’s 2701 First Ave. N. 2425 Gabel Road
“Casual and laid-back” is how general manager Scott Berube describes Jake’s Restaurants in Billings, which Gazette readers chose as the best all-around restaurant. A past Readers’ Choice winner for best food and drink, Jake’s downtown is owned by Kathy Bolin, while John Negu owns the West End location. Berube says the restaurants are favorites because of the foods available and the service. You can get a $9 burger or a $35 dinner, depending on what you want on a particular day. “You’re only as good as your next customer,” says Berube, noting “You can’t recover from poor service.” Jake’s has an atmosphere to suit your mood – from casual in the bar to the option of being more formal in the dining room with its low lighting. The downtown restaurant has two bars. “We pride ourselves on being Montana’s premium steakhouse,” Berube says.” Among customer favorites are fish tacos and prime rib. The restaurant has a different steak special each night. Steak can come with sautéed mushrooms, onions, blue cheese crumbles, balsamic glaze and cheese sauce. Berube thanks the employees and customers, both of whom he says are responsible for Jake’s winning Readers’ Choice honors. “I’m truly blessed with the staff I have and our repeat customers,” he says. And he encourages the public to come try new things. “You can try out special things, things that are trendy but stay true to Montana tastes,” Berube says.
Bagel Shop
Great American Bagel 327 S. 24th St. W. While most of their customers are sleeping, the employees of Great American Bagel are busy making fresh bagels. “We start fresh every morning at 3 o’clock,” says owneroperator Dennis Starkey. The shop offers 19 types of bagel from jalapeño cheddar to French toast bagels. The favorite is probably asiago cheese, Starkey says. “We mix our own cream cheese” from strawberry, vegetable, jalapeño, vanilla and more, he notes. And customers can buy extra of their favorite spread to accompany their bagels. For large parties, the shop offers special boxes. Customers can call ahead for sandwich or bagel trays or special orders. “We bake fresh bagels every day, all day,” Starkey says. “We bake them through the day to accommodate the needs.” Great American Bagel crafts breakfast sandwiches with egg; sausage, ham or bacon; and cheese. Or, for lunch, try a turkey club, roast beef, ham, salami, smoked salmon or other bagel sandwich. You’ll also find panini, soup and salads. “I’d like to thank the readers for voting Great American Bagel the number one bagel of the year,” Starkey says and offers a shout out to his staff.

Bakery
Harper & Madison 3115 10th Ave. N. Harper & Madison has a simple, yet challenging goal – “to make people happier when they leave than when they came in,” says owner Joanie Swords. But it’s a goal that the bakery meets with “great customer service, great food and ambience,” she says. She describes the restaurant, bakery and coffee house in one as similar to “a little French bistro – calm and friendly. A little European, a little city.” In addition to its fresh pastries, customers find deli sandwiches, panini and wrap sandwiches. “We sell out of our quiche every single day” and of the shop’s moist coconut cake, too, Swords says of the shop, which opened 4-1/2 years ago. The Market Club is the most popular deli sandwich. Coffee lovers will fine a special Harper & Madison blend roast. And the coffee is locally roasted. Lattes are also a favorite. Most days, staff comes in between 4 and 5 a.m. to have goodies ready for customers by 7 a.m. Harper & Madison participates in two farm-to-table three-course dinners each summer in conjunction with Lilac restaurant for about 150 people. The bake shop’s menu changes periodically, and those in a hurry can take out their treats. If you call ahead, the staff can accommodate special orders, such as wedding cakes. Harper & Madison also caters and does off-hours private events at the restaurant. The blend of sweets, service and ambience have made Harper & Madison a repeat winner as Readers’ Choice for best bakery. “As a staff, we are continually grateful that we get to do what we do,” Swords says. “It’s because customers keep coming back, so thank you.”

Barbecue
Blue’s BBQ 523 Hilltop Road The proof is in the smoke, and mouth-watering barbecue is the result at Blue’s BBQ. Owner Kim Hager says the restaurant traces its roots to Sheridan, Wyo., where she and her husband, Ken, began operating out of the back of a grocery store in 1995. They moved into a gas station. Then, in spring 2004, they headed for Billings at the urging of some fans from the Magic City who even scouted out a site for their favorite restaurant. Blue’s offers good ol’ Texas-style barbecue, with takeout, catering and sit-down dining. “It’s fast out, but it’s not fast food,” Kim Hager says. Far from it. Barbecue takes hours to smoke to perfection. “It takes four to six hours for the ribs” and longer for smoked brisket and turkey, she says. Blue’s makes its own sides, such as baked yams and pasta. The beans are done on the smoker, and Blue’s offers spicy beans with jalapeños. Brisket is gaining more recognition with the barbecue crowd and stars in sandwiches, plates and family meals. The relaxed atmosphere fits right in with the flavorful food, including the ranch pasta salad, a customer favorite

Chinese food Grand Garden 3839 Grand Ave.
Make it eight – eight years in a row that Grand Garden has been voted best Chinese restaurant in the Readers’ Choice awards. The family-run business offers a wide range of Chinese dishes prepared with years of experience. Diners can enjoy a culinary tour of exotic dishes. Start with crab puffs, egg rolls or other appetizers to set the mood. Meals are prepared to your taste, so you adjust the heat as desired. Many entrees com with a choice of beef, shrimp, pork or chicken. Combination meals let diners enjoy a mix of flavors in one meal. And vegetarian dishes also are available. Those new to Chinese food can sample a wide range of flavors at the buffets for lunch or dinner. And longtime lovers of Oriental cuisine can find many favorites in the varied buffet selection. Takeout is available, too.

City Brew 100 24th St. W. 2425 King Ave. W. 802 Shiloh Crossing Blvd. 1640 Grand Ave. 1131 N. 27th St. 710 Main St. 1208-1/2 Main St. For many folks, caffeine drives the day, and City Brew has been the favorite spot to get a hot cup for the 14 years in a row in the Readers’ Choice awards. But it doesn’t stop with a choice of caffeinated drinks with beans sourced from around the world. You’ll find chilled drinks, lattes, breakfast sandwiches and pastries made locally as well. Becky Reno, City Brew’s owner, says the business has seven kiosks and coffee shops in Billings, including its roasting facility at 2425 King Ave. W. And, while the aroma tempts customers, she says it’s the commitment to the community and the business’ people that keep customers coming back – whether they drive through at any of the locations or drop in for a relaxing cup and conversation. “Our team works very hard to expertly craft all the drinks” to suit customer palate, she says. Customers have a wide range of flavors to sample. Right now, pumpkin spice latte is welcoming customers for fall. “We appreciate all of the support that we have had from the community,” Reno says. “This is our home.”
Cupcake
TATTOO COMPANY & BODY PIERCING BOD
Tea City & Cupcakes 1001 Shiloh Crossing Blvd., Suite 7 After just a year in business and a May move to a new location, Tea City & Cupcakes has made a name for itself as the spot to find mouth-watering cupcakes and enjoy a great cup of tea, too. Owned by Jeanne, William and Cameron Bullard, the shop started in Rimrock Mall, but moved to a new building off Shiloh road this spring. “It’s the smartest move we ever made,” says Cameron Bullard, who is general manager. On an average weekday, the shop offers 10 to 14 select cupcakes to tempt palates. On weekends, take your choice from 14 to 20 varieties. All are proprietary recipes developed by Cameron Bullard, baker Darrian Haynie and Kyle Pratt, who helped design the menu. Some days the shop will have chocolate torte, almond biscotti or Swiss rolls, and bubble tea is being added to the evolving menu. Lemonade Cupcakes are a favorite, with an olive oil/orange cupcake with lemon-curd filling and strawberry frosting. The shop does tea infusions in several cupcakes. Sample the flavors, such as chocolate mint, raspberry chocolate and orange spice chai. At least 80 varieties of tea are on the shop’s wall. The tea is fresh brewed on the customer’s order and never pre-mixed. Hot teas area served in cast-iron tea pots for better flavor. The shop does special orders. “I’d love to thank my employees … and all my fantastic customers from the bottom of our hearts” for the quick success of the shop, Cameron Bullard says.
Doughnuts Evergreen IGA 1540 13th St. W.
Doughnuts “are a pleasure food,” according to Don Rickhoff, store manager at Evergreen IGA. And lots of folks find lots to indulge in as they choose from about three dozen tempting doughnuts daily at the store bakery. The current owners have had the store for about 15 years, and it’s been in its present location since 1980. But Evergreen IGA traces its history back much further in a site just to the south of its present one. Doughnuts are baked overnight. “When customers come in in the morning, the doughnuts are just being iced,” Rickhoff says. He says the bakery makes sure it’s “buying the best quality product” that’s then turned into tasty treats by longtime employees with “high quality standards.” Customer favorites include long Johns, Bismarks, jelly-filled Bismarks, apple and

blueberry fritters and glazed and sugar doughnuts. The bakery will take special orders and has had standing orders from several churches for a long time. A mixed assortment of doughnuts is a popular business treat. Rickhoff thanks customers for coming in and supporting the bakers and is honored that they took time to vote for Evergreen IGA as having the best doughnuts. “Employees work real hard to provide a consistent good product,” he notes.
French fries
Red Robin Gourmet Burgers & Brews 1595 Grand Ave. Billings likes them bottomless. French fries. Fries from Red Robin, which again have been voted best in the Readers’ Choice awards. Ben Sovine, the general manager, says customers can enjoy as many fries as they like when they order burgers or other items that come with the potatoes. Red Robin makes steak fries, “just a classic,” says Sovine, who says diners enjoy the crispy outside’s contrast with the creamy inside. The Billings Red Robin franchise is owned locally by Jake Jones and Justin Philbrick. While the restaurant opened in 1988, its current location in the West Park Promenade is relatively new. Sovine says a key to good fries is to serve them “piping hot.” Red Robin’s fries are also set apart by their trademark seasoning on the outside. Red Robin serves close to 40 burgers, from traditional favorites to new varieties. The restaurant has five promotions a year and features new varieties each time, Sovine says. The atmosphere is family-oriented, with the restaurant and the adult-themed bar set off from the main dining area. The bar, he says, “has a good vibe.” The bar is starting a new happy hour, and customers can orders fries alone or any menu items in the bar. And, oh, yes, lots of those fries also fly out of the restaurant in takeout orders, too.
Fried chicken
Suds Hut 1110 Broadwater Ave. Suds Hut has lots to boast about with its broasted-style chicken, which has again been voted best fried chicken in the Readers’ Choice awards. In business for 40 years since May, the restaurant has a relaxed, family s atmosphere – with blue-and-white checked table cloths and hearty servings. Chuck Schmidt owns the restaurant, whose chicken is “always fresh,” says Tricia Donaldson, the manager. The chicken is cooked under pressure so it seals the outside so oil doesn’t get inside, as can happen with simple frying. Chicken is served by the dinner or in buckets for takeout or delivery. A chicken dinner comes with potato, salad and a roll and includes four pieces of chicken. The restaurant does a busy breakfast and lunch business, along with dinner. Popular menu items include ribs, steak specials and seafood. Suds Hut also caters weddings and big parties. Donaldson offers employees “a big thank you for the job they do” and wants to “thank customers for being faithful and supporting us.”

Frozen yogurt shop Spinners 3031 Grand Ave. #200
Kids – and adults, too – can get creative at Spinners, which has been voted best frozen yogurt shop for the third year in a row. Julie and Dave Diehl co-own the shop, which opened in 2012 to offer premium yogurt with less fat and calories than ice cream. Guests can customize their yogurt as they want, not just order off the menu. The shop has eight yogurt machines with three flavors each that include some staple flavors and others that rotate. Some of the most popular include birthday cake, cookies and cream and pineapple whip. Fall brings a popular pumpkin flavor, and other seasons also have signature flavors as big draws. “We probably have 50 toppings,” Julie Diehl says. A fun option is “boba balls, which are like fruit gushers filled with fruit juice. “Kids love picking toppings,” she says, adding, “We’re very kid-friendly. We let them make any combinations they can think of.” Julie Diehl is proud that the shop is “a nice, place to hang out” and says, “We love the family atmosphere.” “What sets us apart is our employees,” she says. “They’re super-friendly.” She thanks her loyal and repeat customers. The shop has sit-down and take-out customers and also can do parties and group orders.

other Montana cities may have helped build anticipation for the Billings opening. But it’s the product and service that keep folks coming back. And Munson wants to thank Billings residents “so much for being so welcoming to us.” The shop has a bright, open concept. And outdoor seating also is available. Munson says, “We use as many locally sourced ingredients as we can for our homemade ice cream.” “Very natural, wholesome ice cream” goes into rich and creamy sundaes, shakes, root beer floats, ice cream cones and bowls, she notes. Popular flavors recall childhood. Huckleberry is a favorite flavor along with espresso, Heath and s’mores. Lots of toppings are available in a stop that’s “fun for families and people of all ages,” Munson says. The shop has daily ice cream specials that aren’t part of the menu. “We like to let ice cream be the star of the show,” Munson says.
Italian food
Ciao Mambo 2501 Montana Ave. Italian food goes far beyond simple spaghetti at Ciao Mambo in downtown Billings. A repeat winner for Italian food in The Gazette’s Readers’ Choice awards, the restaurant has been in the city nearly six years and serves up atmosphere as well as mouth-watering pastas, salads and desserts. Jeff Schlenker, the chief operating officer, describes Ciao Mambo as “a scratch-made, family-style restaurant.” The menu uses mainly the recipes of Brad Townsend and has some collaborative menu items as well. Among the favorites is Italian Nachos, which feature fried lasagna pasta, prosciutto, cheese sauce, black olives and more piled high.
What’s goes great with a great brew? A great hot dog, of course. And Uberbrew is a winner on both counts. Its awardwinning Billings-brewed ales pair up well with the sausages that make the microbrewery reader’s pick for best hot dogs in Billings. Jason Shroyer, president of Uberbrew, say the dogs use locally sourced sausage from Project Meats in Huntley. The soft white buns come from Grains of Montana. The creative chefs in the microbrewery kitchen have come up with several varieties of hot dogs, including some specials. One example is the Rueben Dog, with house-made corned beef and sauerkraut. The Uberdog uses pickled veggies and is a bit spicy. The dogs are served up in “modern pub style” in a relaxed atmosphere in a 1918 building, Shroyer says. He says the microbrewery, which opened in 2012, “tried to keep as much of the original structure as possible.” The long concrete bar, high tables and low German-style communal tables help get conversations flowing and bring a bit of Bavaria to Billings.
Ice Cream
Big Dipper Ice Cream 100 N. Broadway Open just since April in Billings, Big Dipper Ice Cream has already drawn a loyal audience for its dreamy frozen treats. Owner Tina Wu says the business opened five years ago as a lounge, then the steakhouse was added. And it’s been popular since, including being a repeat winner in the Readers’ Choice awards. The restaurant features sushi and sashimi as well as Teppanyaki-style Japanese cooked foods. Chinese, Japanese and Thai foods all
Nestled in the historic Montana Power Building, the Montana Brewing Co. has mastered serving food fast to its lunch crowd without serving fast food. The business opened in 1994 as the city’s first full brewery of the ’90s. And the décor reflects Billings history with old photos of the city and breweries, says Sean Graves, the owner. A glass wall allows diners to watch brewing teams at work on their products. Customers can eat at the bar top and patio, as well as the indoor restaurant tables. In the last three years, the restaurant has been working to get lunch customers in and out as fast as possible for tight lunch breaks, Graves says. But that hasn’t cut into the variety for which the restaurant in known noon and night.

The Stand Down “generally appeals to everyone,” says Jason Shroyer, Uberbrew’s president. He notes that it’s “a good, smooth beer.” At the Billings microbrewery, White Noise is the most popular beer. The American wheat ale took silver at the World Beer Cup in 2014. Uberbrew tests a range of brews and serves them up with a hint of history and a touch of Germany in a 1918 building on Montana Avenue, where food and beer are served 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and food continues to flow until 9 p.m. “We have kind of an open pub atmosphere conducive to meeting new people,” Shroyer says. The microbrew also has been involved in special events and supporting the community at events, such as Ales for Trails.
Pizza
Juan Nuño Jr.’s parents opened the first Guadalajara restaurant in Billings in the mid-1990s, and the family, including Juan’s siblings, continues to serve authentic Mexican food at three locations in Billings plus restaurants in Havre and Laurel. The recipes are inspired by the family’s life and travels in Mexico. The Hispanic heritage is obvious immediately in the Mexican items decorating the dining room. Nosh on the fresh salsa and handmade chips served at each table while perusing the extensive menu, which features a range of combinations for lunch and dinner. Shredded beef, chicken or pork is used in many dishes, and the restaurant uses healthier cooking methods while retaining authentic flavors. Try enchiladas, tacos, tostadas, chimichangas, chile rellenos or quesadillas. Or sample the American menu. Among the salads is a fajita chicken salad. A popular desert is the hand-rolled fried ice cream topped with chocolate, caramel or other topping. The restaurant does a lot of parties and charities and also offers takeout. “We are absolutely grateful, thankful and humbled” to be honored by the Readers’ Choice awards, Nuño says. And, he notes, the restaurant is proud to make its dishes “from scratch to order.”
Microbrewery
Bullman’s Pizza 960 S. 24th St. W., Suite A Bryce Finn describes Bullman’s Pizza as a “local, Montana-grown” restaurant. Finn, the general manager of the Billings pizzeria, says Mike Hampton opened the original store in Helena, then another in Kalispell before starting the Billings restaurant four years ago. Finn enjoys the “great family atmosphere.” Bullman’s used a wood-fired oven fueled by white oak, not fryers or grills, for cooking. The result is a distinctive flavor. Dough and sauces are crafted daily. “All of the pizzas are named after Montana features and mountain ranges,” such as Glacier, Gallatin and Bitterroot, Finn says. The Pioneer is one of the most popular pizzas and features pepperoni. Another popular pizza is the Flathead, with Canadian bacon, savory tomato sauce, pepperoni, Italian sausage, mushrooms and more. The pizzas all are thin-crust. Finn says the restaurant’s repeat business has been “amazing” and wants to thank readers “very much for nominating Bullman’s.” He calls the approach “family-run wholesome fun” and says the service is “one of the great things” as many servers come to know customers so well that they know what they will order before even handing out menus.
Ribs
Uberbrew 2305 Montana Ave.
Blue’s BBQ 523 Hilltop Road
Billings residents know a winner when they hoist one—and national judges concur. Uberbrew was chosen best microbrew in The Billings Gazette’s Readers’ Choice contest, and its Alpha Force Double Tap ale won gold in the Alpha King Challenge in Denver in September. In 2014, Uberbrew’s Black Hops won silver at the Great American Beer Festival. And its Stand Down English brown ale took gold at this year’s American Beer Awards.
One of the hottest food trends in recent trends in recent years harkens back decades – richly flavored barbecued ribs. And Blue’s BBQ helps set the standard in Billings with its Texas-style ribs. Owner Kim Hager says Blue’s uses a dry rub, then smokes its ribs over whole hardwood logs, not gas or propane. The old-style cooking gives a special flavor and aroma that makes Blue’s a Billings favorite. For customers, “the aroma gets them

Sauce is served on the side, so customers can have their ribs just to their taste. “When we started, … nobody had had our style of barbecue,” Hager recalls. The restaurant gave out lots of samples, and, “once they try it, they love it,” she says. The baby back ribs are luscious pork, a contrast to the restaurant’s beef brisket. Customers “like that the ribs are tender and meaty,” Hager says. “They have a lot of flavor, and they fall off the bone.” The restaurant offers takeout, as well as sit-down dining and catering. And families are welcome. Hager notes her appreciation for the loyal customers at Blue’s and adds, “We have the best employees in town. They are always friendly when you come in.”
Romantic dinner Juliano’s 2912 Seventh Ave. N.
Chef Carl Kurokowa, owner of Juliano’s, calls his restaurant and its 1913 Victorian sandstone building “the most romantic place around.” A part of Austin North’s original Castle grounds, the building is nestled amid greenery and has an outdoor patio for relaxed dining in warm weather. Inside, the look retains some of the past while featuring some changes, too. Juliano’s has operated there for 21 years. Open for lunch and dinner, the restaurant features what Kurokowa calls a “neo-Montana” menu of contemporary American dishes that reflect his experience with Asian, Italian and French cooking.
He tries to use local products as much as possible, including sourcing local lamb. The menu changes each month. “There’s always something new,” says Kurokowa, who has a reputation as one of the city’s most creative chefs. “Whatever is in season, I will go in that direction,” he says. For example, an Oktoberfest-friendly menu was developed for October. Diners can make special requests, and he will try to accommodate them. Kurokowa is known for his donating his culinary skills in the community. As for Juliano’s, he says, “It’s the whole package – the ambiance, the service, the food” and, oh, yes, the romance.
Now owned by Jim Bennett, the restaurant is in its ninth year at its West End location. Diners can eat inside or on the patio. Scott Barber, the operations manager, describes the atmosphere as “casual, upbeat and modern.” Among the restaurant’s best sellers he lists the ribeye filet, which uses high-quality beef cut in house. Consistent food and service are part of the key to the restaurant’s success, says Bennett, noting that some employees have been with the eatery for years and through multiple owners. He offers “sincere thanks for the recognition” from Readers’ Choice voters, adding, “We look forward to serving them with the same quality and service in the next year.”
Seafood
Rib & Chop House 1849 Majestic Lane
Windmill 3429 TransTech Way The Windmill name has been part of the Billings dining scene for decades, and its ribs and deep-fried prawns still are stars, although the locations and owners have changed over time. Those popular prawns – now also scampi-style, steamed or grilled – lead the list of seafood dishes making the Windmill the winner for best seafood in this year’s Readers’ Choice awards. They’re served with a choice of potatoes or rice pilaf and vegetables. Also sample the halibut and salmon, which are cut in house, or luxuriant lobster. For lunch, try halibut fish and chips or seafood tacos with halibut or shrimp.
Steak
When a family brings little kids to the Rib & Chop House, a serving of apple and yogurt quickly arrives at the table for free. It’s part of the restaurant’s welcoming approach to families and helps keep kids occupied as parents peruse the extensive menu and choose from their favorite steaks and other dishes. The welcoming attitude and propriety method of cooking helped make the restaurant the top stop for a steak in the Readers’ Choice awards. Rory Sandoval, the vice president of operations, says, “We focus on a quality product at a reasonable price.” The 8-year old restaurant is owned by Melissa and Burke Moran, of Livingston, and uses special seasoning and a distinctive piece of equipment in preparing its steaks.

Now it’s back in the Magic City under the ownership of Daniel McComish and Chelsey Pirtz. Freshness is a byword at the restaurant. McComish says all the meats, cheese and vegetables are sliced fresh daily. Grand Bagel bakes the bread fresh daily, and all hot sandwiches are grilled to order from raw. The sandwiches are a bit bigger than many subs, measuring in at 8-3/4 inches and 17 inches long. And they’re layered with lots of meat. McComish says the Cheese Steak is the best-known hot sandwich, while the Bobcat is the cold favorite. Pickle Barrel serves four soups daily and eight in the fall. The restaurant does takeout and delivers within four miles of its location. “We try to provide quality service, and we like everyone to leave satisfied and happy,” McComish says.
Step into the exotic with a visit to Siam Thai restaurant. Ray Williams says the 14-year-old restaurant is owned by his wife, Nit, who is Thai. It’s a family affair, with son Preecha cooking all of the dishes that greet diners with their rich aromas. And family recipes are used in the restaurant. Williams says diners will be tempted by a wide range of flavors. “You can enjoy sweet, sour and spicy all in one dish,” and the heat can be adjusted to suit individual palates, he says. Among the favorites at the restaurant are Phad Thai, a noodle dish, and Drunken Noodles, along with Roasted Duck Curry. “Each dish is made as ordered,” Williams says. The restaurant has an intimate feel, with Thai pictures and blue walls and carpets. The main dining room has only 14 tables, but a side room holds up to 30 more. Guests can order takeout or eat in. Williams describes the atmosphere as family-friendly, but it makes a good date site, too. The restaurant serves beer and wine, including some Thai beers for guests who’d like to sample sip of the Orient.
Sushi
Fancy Sushi Asian Fusion 1313 Grand Ave., Suite 3 Gazette Staff
Fancy Sushi Asian Fusion is this year’s Readers’ Choice winner for best sushi.
Sandoval says the Baseball Top Sirloin and ribeye are the most popular steaks. Each is served with a super salad and side on a 500-degree plate with clarified butter. Diners also enjoy the seafood and ribs. Sandoval describes the atmosphere as “casual, comfortable with a high level of focus on service.” The warm décor includes a fireplace in the middle of the dining room. And paintings by Livingston artist Park Reese decorate the walls. “We are very family-focused,” Sandoval says, but the restaurant also hosts many a prom date or anniversary dinner. “We’re all about the hospitality,” he says. “We want to make you feel comfortable.” He adds, “We’d like to thank Billings for all that it’s done for us.”
Take a tour of the Orient with Fancy Sushi Asian Fusion. The delicate designs of sushi are the centerpiece of the restaurant, which has been open for almost five years and features both sushi and kitchen chefs. But you can sample a wide range of Asian flavors, from sushi to teriyaki and tempura from Japan to Chinese and Thai dishes. The colorful restaurant has an Asian-meets-American style and seats almost 100 people. Owner Jimmy Li prides himself on the freshness of the fish used in his dishes as the restaurant receives deliveries multiple times a week. Other ingredients focus on freshness, too. He says his chefs create “beautiful dishes.” But more than the intriguing designs of sushi attract diners. “It’s healthy, and it’s becoming very popular,” Li says. He says the restaurant uses special sauce that elevates its sushi rolls over traditional offerings. And he says the enthusiasm with which the restaurant’s dishes have been greeted encourages staff. “Thank you so much for voting for us,” Li says. “We will try to better and better.”
Wings
Buffalo Wild Wings 411 S. 24th St. W. Chicken wings just “go hand in hand with sports,” says David Moorhead, director of marketing for Buffalo Wild Wings. He says the finger food is perfect fan food. But he sees Buffalo Wild Wings as “a sports restaurant, not a sports bar.” Brad Anderson owns the Billings restaurant and six others across Montana. Moorhead says, “We’re all about sports and great food.” The restaurant has a wide range of sauces and even sends out a special lab insert that alerts customers to try new ones coming onto the menu. “Sauces make wings such a popular item,” Moorhead says. “You can customize them so many ways.” A popular Ghost Pepper sauce is just back and is also available by the bottle. Honey barbecue is a top seller. He describes the restaurant as family-friendly. The premises just underwent a remodel in July, and Moorhead says it has lightened the feeling. It’s as if “the energy of a stadium as has been brought into a restaurant,” he says. He’s excited about the changes and says, “Thank you, Billings, for voting us best wings.”

The curtain raises, and we answer, on the edge of our seats with smiles and electric anticipation. As the largest performing arts venue in the region, the ABT offers a wide variety of performances, ranging from Broadway musicals to world-renowned dance companies, comedy to country.
“Our goal is to have programs that appeal to a diverse audience,” said William Wood, executive director. “Getting this award says we’re doing a pretty good job of that.” In addition to entertainment, the theater has a strong educational outreach mission, oohing and aweing some 22,000 schoolchildren each year. The program combines field trips to the theater, where students get to enjoy stage performances through the Student Matinee Series, and art programs which go to area schools. Wood expressed his gratitude to people in the community and region who fill the seats and support the arts. He also praised the theater’s talented staff and dedicated volunteers for working tirelessly behind the scenes to make certain every performance is a success. “They make the magic happen.”
Ewelt is thrilled to have been honored with this award for the third year in a row. “Thank you to the entire community for your vote of confidence yet again,” Ewelt said. “We look forward to entertaining families for generations to come!”
