READERS’ CHOICE: THE BEST OF BILLINGS DARRELL EHRLICK | DEHRLICK@BILLINGSGAZETTE.COM

It’s all about you. Really. The Billings Gazette Readers’ Choice awards, now in its 18th year, is about what customers and residents think about the best people, places, services and entertainment. It’s a popularity contest in the best possible sense since readers vote for their favorites. For those new to this award, here’s quick rundown of The Billings Gazette Readers’ Choice Awards.

This year, we’ve added four new categories — children’s boutique, garden center and nursery, family restaurant and international restaurant. These categories have a common theme: Billings is increasingly becoming more diverse. Retailers are catering to both the families that are choosing to call Billings home, as well as becoming more diverse in dining. We’ve also brought back one category, self-storage. And, that’s pretty self-evident, too, as the demand for storage space, as Billings grows, is definitely increasing. This year we’ve also added a separate health and HY EADERS HOICE beauty section in order to help categorize our winners Because you know where to get the good stuff. And better. you should share that information with your friends. Think of Readers’ Choice as word-of-mouth advertising on steroids (but the good kind, not the baseball-bikOTABLE ing-cheating kind). These businesses and service providers are the best in their category. And as such, we’d like to give them a hearty congratulations for being recognized by those who matter most, the customers. He attributes his success to his coaching staff. “For me, winning games and this Readers’ Choice Award are cool, but it is really for our whole coaching staff. We enjoy being around each other, and we work well together,” Murdock said. “There are differences in the way we go about coaching, but it’s all about how we get to know each athlete and how each one responds on the field. … Every year it’s different, and we have to get each player to reach their full potential. That’s one of the best things about coaching.” During his decade of teaching and many recent years of coaching, Murdock looked back and said, “I don’t know that I’ve ever worked a day in my life, and I’ve never had two bad days in row.”

Photographer Clark Marten Photography 2606 Montana Avenue

“It’s not what you have in life, but who you have in your life that matters most.” For photographer/owners Clark, Rachel and Rudi Marten, those words are much more than a saying – they reflect the essence of Clark Marten Photography. In business for more than 30 years, the Martens moved their studio from Columbus to a historic building on Montana Avenue. Rudi joined the family business in 2008 and was instrumental in their move in 2013. Together, the creative trio create portraits with a distinct flair. Specializing in family, high-school senior and children’s portraits, Clark and Rudi work hard to ensure each portrait uniquely captures their subject. “Our work has a lot of depth plus an artistic edge, blurring the lines between photography and art,” Rudi said. “But it’s the whole experience from designing the location and clothing, to entertaining their kids during the session and helping everyone relax and feel their best. “Our goal is not only that people love their portrait on their wall, but they see it and love everything about the day it was created, too.” Clark Marten also has credentials behind his artistry. Accredited by the Professional Photographers of America (PPA), he has earned the title Master Craftsman Photographer – the highest degree available. He also sits on the national Board of Directors for PPA.

Jessica Simonton Photography jessicasimontonphotography.com During her three years as a professional photographer in Billings and surrounding areas, Jessica Simonton has found her niche behind the camera lens. “My business is mainly shooting weddings; last year I shot only three weddings, but this year I will shoot 18,” said the 30-year-old, self-taught photographer. The increased business had her husband, Eric Simonton, join her as a second shooter, and she also hired one other employee. In addition to family portraits she typi

cally includes engagement shots with wedding photos. “Usually I have a chance to work with the couple during the engagement sessions and include posed-for natural shots. I really like to do some candid (shots), too. While I am focusing on the wedding portraits, my husband captures the couple naturally, as they are,” she said. A recent wedding at Makoshika State Park (near Glendive) will not be forgotten. She said, “Fires lit the mountains in the background. We were never in any danger, but you could see it all around and up a hill. It’s something the couple can look back on 50 years from now and show their grandkids what was happening at the time of their wedding.” Simonton said she is pretty booked to shoot weddings for the coming year and is taking on fewer family portrait assignments. “My husband and I are trying to create a work/life balance,” she added.

Real Estate Agent Liz Francis, North Acre Real Estate 2700 2nd Ave. N.

Liz Francis said she was surprised to be chosen as the Readers’ Choice for Best Realtor, as it has only represents a year of her work in an industry she loves. Francis previously worked for two years at a title company. A local Billings girl “through and through,” Francis said she is happy she made the change as it allows her to use a lifetime of area knowledge in real estate transactions. “I was blessed to grow up in the everchanging city of Billings. I have passion and enthusiasm for Billings,” Francis said. “It’s the ever-changing dynamic of the individuals I get to work with, and each individual property. I really enjoy helping people achieve financial success and enabling them to achieve the dream of home ownership.” As a new mother, she said it was easier to relate with many of her clients purchasing property for a family. “I feel excited to win this award. My customers are investing in themselves and creating a place they can call home. It’s encouraging and I am humbled to be that advisor for them,” Francis said.

HAUNTED SPOT Moss Mansion 914 Division St.

Built for Preston and Martha Moss in 1902, this English Renaissance mansion is now a very authentic museum. But is it haunted? Rumors abound, locally and online. The main structure could appear scary, admits Jennette Rasch, the Moss operations manager for four years. “No, I haven’t had any such experiences. But, I’ve heard from others who have,” Rasch said. Working there day and often night, is “not necessarily scary. It’s a happy place. The people who lived here (100 years ago) seem to be a close knit, happy family, I hear,” Rasch said. She knows that stories are out there, telling of haunting child and adult voices of those who had lived in the mansion. With 28 rooms, the 45-foot-tall home has plenty of room for stories, like these found on Hauntedhouses. com: A female voice was singing the Billiards Room; a cool wind was felt traveling around many of the living people’s bodies; the entity of Preston Moss walks down the central staircase and in the master bedroom. Visit the mansion and decide for yourself. Hours are at Mossmansion.com.

The architecture, impossible-to-beat location and pricing all contribute to make it a great option. Built in 1909, the Union Depot is a gorgeous landmark that has been at the center of Billings history, hosting U.S. Presidents, princes and princesses, movie stars and other celebrities. “When our brides and grooms begin their happily ever after here, their story becomes part of our story. We love that,” said Depot Executive Director Jennifer Mercer. The Depot has repeatedly been rated as one of the top wedding venues in the state of Montana, even making the “Top 100 Wedding Venues in the US” list with two different national wedding blogs. The Depot’s status as a non-profit, community-owned venue has helped keep pricing low so that hundreds of couples could afford to begin their “happily ever after” there. With its vaulted ceiling, Roman columns and signature arched window, Billings Depot the grand “Passenger Station” has an 2310 Montana Ave. elegant feel that envelops guests. RETIREMENT COMMUNITY

St. John’s Lutheran Ministries/Mission Ridge Corner of Rimrock and Shiloh Road St. John’s Lutheran Ministries began as a small senior retirement community in Billings in November 1963. A half century later, St. John’s has evolved to become Montana’s largest senior living provider, offering a continuum of residential options and care, inclusive of independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing communities located in Billings, Laurel, Red Lodge and Hamilton. All services and care stem from a common mission to provide living opportunities within nurturing environments of hope, dignity and love. In 1998, St. Vincent Healthcare and St. John’s formed a joint venture partnership to develop and open

Mission Ridge and The Vista senior living communities, located on the western side of Billings. This same joint venture partnership led to the recent development of WyndStone senior living community, which opened its doors in Billings Heights in October 2016. WyndStone features 83 apartments of independent living, independent living with supportive services and assisted living with memory care support. At its first anniversary, WyndStone is already nearing its residential capacity.

SKI MOUNTAIN/ RESORT Red Lodge Mountain 305 Ski Run Road, Red Lodge, MT

Red Lodge Mountain is gearing up for winter, with opening day set for Friday, November 24. The ski area is known for its rustic and laid-back atmosphere, where great skiing and

friendly staff are prized over glitz and glamour. This summer the team has been busy updating facilities and improving accessible terrain. Trail Crews have spent long days glading trees near Drainage, HFNT and Lower Limited. This thinning of dead trees will reduce fuel for potential forest fires and open up more skiable terrain. Be on the lookout for new powder stashes. Red Lodge Mountain offers familyfriendly pricing that makes it easy to get the whole family on the slopes. Interested in lessons? Packages including rentals and lift tickets are available at discounted rates. Beginners can always test out skills on the Magic Carpet at no cost. The 2017-18 season is packed with events, demo days and live music. Don’t miss out on Winter Carnival, Saturday, March 3, the best party of the season. Each year Red Lodge Mountain selects a theme and celebrates with live music, costumes, cardboard crafts and fireworks. For more information visit RedLodgeMountain.com.

Comfort Heating & Air Conditioning 9934 Interstate 90 Frontage Rd. The people of Billings, great employees, above-par customer service and the best products have resulted in Comfort Heating & Air Conditioning’s seventh consecutive Readers’ Choice award. This second-generation, familyowned business is in its 33rd year serving Billings and the surrounding areas. Owners Jeff and Tony Scherr state that their greatest asset is their employees. “We truly have the best crew. From the installers, service technicians and office staff to the managers. Without these great people and their skills, our

customers would not get the level of service that we provide. Great customers deserve great service and we strive to provide our best every day.” Their services include installation of complete heating and cooling systems, repair and maintenance of existing systems and also replacement of older, inefficient units to higher efficiency products. They offer Rheem and Armstrong heating and cooling products. In addition, Comfort Heating is an exclusive Mitsubishi Diamond dealer, offering the very best in ductless heating and cooling systems. These non-traditional systems are popular due to their efficiency and versatility, capable of heating or cooling just one room or an entire house. In terms of accessories, Comfort Heating uses their extensive training to offer customers humidifiers, electronic air cleaners and thermostats (including wireless thermostats that allow for Internet connectivity). You can control

the temperature in your home from anywhere in the world. But no matter the products they sell or how well they repair and maintain equipment, the number-one priority is their customers. “Customers make a business,” notes Jeff Scherr, “Without them, being in business is pointless.”

ANTIQUE STORE Yesteryears Antique Mall 102 N. 29th St.

Colleen Hunsaker knows all about antiques and collectibles. The owner/operator of Yesteryears Antique Mall spent a good portion of her childhood helping her grandparents run a general store. “The value of everyday items just got in my blood,” she says. Although the mall has been open since 2005, it has expanded seven times and now features 65 dealer spaces along with a coffee kiosk.

“Our inventory changes every single day,” Hunsaker notes. “We do everything from the turn-of-the-century to the 1960s and tons of collectibles.” Hunsaker also has an expansive selection of furniture, household furnishings, glassware, pottery, home décor, jewelry, cowboy paraphernalia, advertising signage and the list goes on. “If someone collects something, we have it,” she said. Hunsaker enjoys connecting customers with that perfect, hard-to-find item. She also enjoys learning the curious histories behind the pieces. “Every item is unique with a story to tell,” she said.

Appliance Store Fred’s Appliance Store 2649 King Ave. W.

As the general manager for Montana’s three Fred’s Appliance locations in Missoula, Kalispell and Billings, Doug Standley said, “The customer’s perception, to me, is number one.” He knows that customers count on each Fred’s store stocking a full inventory, having knowledgeable sales people, reliable staff and service professionals who service every-

thing Fred’s sells. “Our biggest advantage is we have a lot of inventory in stock. (With other stores), if a washer breaks, you wait two to three weeks to order and get the model you want. Here, it is available for immediate delivery. And if something breaks, we fix it,” he said. That is especially important in Billings. “The Billings market draws from a very large trade area. Many customers drive a long way, bring a trailer and truck expecting to bring (the purchase) home that day. The reception in Billings has been very good.” Perhaps that is because of Fred’s staff. “The thing I’m most proud of is our people. We are all trying to chase the bottom price and we have trained salespeople who help steer you in the right direction,” Standley said.

Denny Menholt Chevrolet 3000 King Ave. W.

“What has put us where we are at in the business of selling cars is having a huge inventory. People don’t order cars anymore. They want to come in and drive away. And, we are aggressive in our pricing,” said Denny Menholt. “The Chevrolet brand’s biggest seller is full-size pickups, followed by a variety of SUVs. In the Montana marketplace, people are truck people and always will be.” He said he has a full inventory of cars, as well. “Sedans, like the Malibu or Impala. We have a great selection. In the Chevy lineup, they cover all the bases. We still have our Corvettes and other sports cars, too,” Menholt said. He is certain that his sales staff knows what they sell and are treating customers well. “I am a firm believer in training. I’ve been here 30 years and the No.1 thing is people. I am a strong believer in making a work environment where it’s a pleasure to come to work. Happy employees make for happy customers,” he added. “We don’t want to sell you a car, we want to help you buy a car.”

Though the business mostly focuses on the littlest of customers by presenting clothing for newborns to children age 8, the shop does carry forward-thinking items for moms, too. “We are kind of known for having a unique style. …Our items are hand selected, what you can’t just find at any store,” said Salyer. Whether it’s for a family photo, a birthday or other special occasion, Salyer said her clothes will be “comfy.” “We have things mom likes to put on kiddos, and that are also soft and comfortable to wear.” Knowing that youngsters typically come hand-in-hand with a mom, Salyer stocks items for moms, too - maternity clothing and styles ideal for nursing mothers. “Our top category is our child clothing category. It’s what people know we have. But they may not know we carry up to an age eight,” she said. Having four employees to assist helps Salyer’s store stay on track, while operating her own business helps her remain focused as a mother. “I get to bring my little one with me every day. Jana Pennington wanted to offer fun, fashionforward clothing at an affordable price. After their first 2.5 years in business, they see their success when three generations of females repeatedly visit their shop and find what they are looking for every visit. “We designed the store after what wasn’t available in Billings,” Jana Pennington said. “I wanted it to be family friendly. Mothers, daughters, grandmothers will each be able to find something (here).” Comfortable seating at the four generouslysized fitting rooms brings ladies together for a casual day of shopping. She said The Banyan Tree offers a complete shopping experience, with jewelry, shoes and accessories to complement all clothing. They also offer a variety of “Montana” themed merchandise, as well. store manager Nick Blake. “We’ve adapted to those changes that always happen in clothing. Currently, we’re in a trend of three different fits in men’s clothing – traditional, modern and slim,” Blake said. When a customer doesn’t know the right fit for him, Desmond’s saves the day with its 27 years of experience, extensive inventory and a custom tailor. “We educate,” Blake said. “A customer may find something he likes, but may not be the best for him. I have those different fits in stock so he can try it, see how it feels.” When a customer choice is made, Desmond’s can tailor an item for an exact fit. Many younger customers who have only bought items off the rack their entire lives are finding the benefits of using a tailor. Blake said many young men come in for today’s quasi-casual look that favors a sports coat with slacks or denim, and many men choose just a nice shirt with no tie.

Just as a woman knows that her wardrobe

should have time-trusted elements, the Billings shopping community knows that a clothing store should meet those same criteria. After eight years, Katie Cline Ellis knows that her shop, Bottega Clothing, will continue to provide women with wardrobe knowledge from her highly trained and experienced stylists. Cline Ellis describes Bottega’s inventory as “classic styling, ready to wear, even contemporary casual.” In offering that to her typical shopper, any woman age 35 to 65, Bottega stylists work one-on-one with each customer. Maybe she is a woman who is refocusing on herself. She could need jeans, blouses, blazers, but not add trendy fashion that will go out of season. “Providing good quality staple pieces is definitely our experience,” said Cline Ellis, who moved her shop from a downtown location to their current Shiloh Crossing location more than two years ago. “We strive to provide a very welcoming, approachable atmosphere with highly trained personal stylists. They know what to recommend for each specific body type, personality and dressing style.” Even more important, Cline Ellis said is that her staff of seven stylists takes their knowledge further. “We educate our customer on additions to their wardrobe so their choice is going to last a long time,” she said.

Consignment/ Used Clothing Store Savvy Seconds 1739 Grand Ave.

With an owner making savvy choices in product selection and creating appealing display space, Savvy Seconds continues to be a shopper’s choice for women’s wear. “Our popularity? It’s my selection, customer service and the displays,” said Deb Dryer, owner of the store that has been open for five years. Within the 2,000 square feet of display

and sales area, Savvy Seconds offers onestop shopping for women looking to save some money when buying clothing and associated jewelry, purses and accessories. “I have nice floor space and I make it easy to shop,” Dryer added. more services and convenient locations, readers of The Billings Gazette selected Valet Today Cleaners for another Readers’ Choice award. The new changes haven’t just been aimed at making the experience better for those needing laundry service, dry cleaning, alterations or specialty work, it’s also meant the service is faster. Now, at all three locations, Valet Today offers same-day service. “We have expanded our laundry services to include wash-and-fold laundry, perfect for all those who want to free up time to spend with friends and family,” said owner Stacey Frank. Valet Today Cleaners started dry cleaning services 60 years ago. But, it’s changed since then to expand the services and update its products. It offers a line of environmentallyfriendly cleaning products for its services. Co-owner Stacey Frank, along with her husband, Jason, planned the new stores and locations for a decade. They bought the business in 2006 and had a 10-year lease on the locations. That’s when they started planning for new stores, with better access for customers. Each of the stores has drive-up access and 24-hour drop-off boxes. In addition to the three stores and the same-day service, Valet Today includes 24-hour drop-off and delivery in Red Lodge at the Wellness Approach Center. All clothing items are now processed in the state-of-the-art plant then shuttled back to each individual store. In addition to the dry cleaning, Valet Today locations are busy with their annual coat and shoe drive in time for the cold winter months and holidays. Before Oct. 31, people with “gently used” or new shoes or coats can drop them off to be donated. Valet Today Cleaners then cleans the coats and gives them to Family Services of Billings, Community Hope in Laurel and several other charities throughout the region. The annual drive has resulted in more than 5,000 donations per year.

Hot Tub/ Spa Center

Montana HotSpring Spas 2217 Grand Ave. Since the Billings Gazette’s Readers’ Choice Award launched in 2000, only two businesses have won the same category every single year. Montana HotSpring Spas is one of those businesses. For 17 straight years, they have been named the best hot tub and spa center by readers. As owner Scott Prociv said, “We’re in hot water and we love it. Yet, in those 17 years, hot tubs have gone from being a luxury item to an essential part of health.” Prociv said his business isn’t about selling items, it’s about helping customers have a more healthy, enjoyable life. In Latin, the word “spa” is defined as health by water. Scott Prociv, owner of Montana HotSpring Spas, champions this mindset, recognizing that a spa is less of a home improvement item and more of a personal improvement one. “Our motto is to ‘make every day better’,” he said, which is definitely achievable through the relaxing science of hydro-technology. Studies have shown that regular sauna use helps detoxify bodies, burn calories, increase circulation and decrease stress. As a professional, authorized dealer of HotSpring Spas and Finnleo Saunas, Montana HotSpring Spas specializes in their own analysis, delivery, customer care and installation. In 2012 the store underwent a major remodel to better serve their customers. Prociv credits his loyal, hard-working staff (who he actually dubs a “family of employees”) with much of the store’s success. It has been part of the Billings business landscape since it opened in 1977. He also wants to thank the Billings community and

By going directly to the source and taking advantage of weaker markets in Asia, Wickham said he is able to buy better than ever at the overseas diamond market. And Goldsmith’s selection of diamonds is second to none. “I hand-select every single stone,” he said. Wickam’s strong relationships with diamond cutters ensures that he purchases only the best stones, and that he can pass along superior pricing to his customers. While brilliant white diamonds remain the favorite for engagement and wedding rings, colored diamonds have grown in popularity. In addition to retail sales, the store has in-house jewelers who can create stunning, custom-designed pieces or repair heirloom jewelry. “More young people want to create custom jewelry pieces,” Wickam noted. “They pick unique aspects of different bridal rings, and our in-house goldsmiths combine those elements into a one-of-a-kind piece.” While many people think custom jewelry is more expensive than stocked items, Wickam said that isn’t the case. “Recently, a couple celebrating their fifth anniversary came in to ask about creating a custom ring. They were pleasantly surprised to find the cost was very affordable,” Wickam said. Goldsmith’s large inventory means customers can find that perfect piece at a perfect price. From a budget-friendly Pandora bead to a 10-carat diamond, Goldsmith’s has a price point for every customer. When it comes to diamonds, no one has more expertise than Wickam. One Source Lighting doesn’t just sell bulbs and light fixtures, it sells solutions. And that’s why its customers continue to vote it Billings’ best lighting center. Owner Lauri Patterson said folks can find lightbulbs and light fixtures in many stores, but what keeps customers walking back into hers is that she can help them find the right solution to their lighting need, not just something that may or may not work. One Source Lighting isn’t just the source for homeowners to brighten up their lives, it’s also a source for other businesses, contractors and stores. It stocks more than 10,000 bulbs in its on-site warehouse, meaning that if you can’t find it elsewhere, chances are you’ll find it at One Source. Patterson specializes in helping customers find ways to update their homes, find a specialty bulb or design their dream home.

Lingerie Shop TLC Lingerie 1400 Broadwater Ave.

Still a strong choice of local and regional customers, and a recurring Readers’ Choice winner, after more than 20 years in business fitting their extensive female clientele with lingerie and swimwear, TLC Lingerie will operate under new ownership in a few months. TLC founders, Victoria Bartle and Linda Cetrone Levy, will turn over ownership of their store by the end of January 2018, when a current employee and her husband take ownership. “It will be changing ownership; new people will be working here. But TLC will still be in business,” Levy said. Paige Farmer, a TLC employee, is purchasing the business with her husband, Chris. Levy said Paige met every requirement of a new owner from the moment the soon-to-be former owners brought her on staff. “Paige will continue to serve customers as we have. We hired her with this transition in mind, when she let us know that she wanted to eventually have a business of her own, we talked to her at the beginning about having her take over, knowing it is a hard transition to go from working in a place to owning that place,” Levy said. “Paige is the perfect person for that. We think she is going to be incredible. The staff is going to be newer, but there will be some experienced people here, too. …The important part of this deal is that Victoria and I are delighted to see this business keep going, being able to serve customers from every state of the union.” While taking over the entire inventory of bras of all size ranges and an extensive stock of swimwear, Paige will also continue to operate the business as a fitting service, Levy added. Both the current and future set of owners know how essential it is for every customer to have a positive experience while finding a bra that fits and is comfortable. “Come in and have a fit” may be their advertising slogan, but it is quite literally what customers do at TLC, Levy added. The fitter listens and does her best to match a bra with the customer’s wishes. The store will also continue carrying a full stock of sizes and designs, and bras and swimwear, all of which are meant to wear well and last a long time.

Mattress Store

Mattress King 17th & Grand 24th & King Ave. (next to Applebee’s) 311 N 7th Ave., Bozeman

No one knows the importance of getting a good night’s sleep better than Jay and Mary Hoffmann. As owners of Mattress King, the couple, along with their courteous, well-trained staff, have been helping people find the right bed for more than 30 years. And as Jay points out, the business is about much more than selling mattresses. “We are absolutely committed to offering our guests the very best products and the highest level of customer service,” he said. That commitment is embedded in the company mission statement: To change people’s lives by helping them experience the best sleep possible and make a positive difference in their lives while serving them each step of the way. According to Jay, that’s not just a saying on a plaque. “Every team member memorizes the mission, and we talk about it every week during meetings,” he said. Walking into a showroom and seeing dozens of mattress sets can feel overwhelming for shoppers. And after people lay down on five or six different mattresses to test them, they become dulled to the experience. That’s just one reason Mattress King has invested in Bed Match System technology. “The Bed Match System uses a diagnostic mattress which takes more than 1000 calculations and measurements. Based on those calculations, we can narrow down the top four or five mattresses for that particular guest,” Jay said. “This makes the selection so much easier and actually fun.” Using technology to find the best fit for an individual not only makes the process of selecting a mattress much easier, it also ensures a better night’s sleep. The process of finding the best mattress starts with excellent sleep consultants. Every potential team member undergoes a rigorous hiring process, which includes a background check and a series of interviews. “Having a very thorough hiring process is not new for us,” noted Jay. “We have followed this strict protocol for many, many years.” Mattress King has also set a gold standard for delivery service. “We call ahead and set a specific time for delivery. When our delivery staff arrives, they roll out a carpet and wear booties over

their shoes to minimize tracking anything into the home. They also wear white gloves to set up your new mattress,” said Jay. From helping guests find the perfect mattress to making deliveries and every step in between, the leaders and team at Mattress King deeply scrutinize every detail to ensure guests receive the highest level of service. “We are so thankful and honored our guests have once again selected us as the best mattress store,” said Jay.

Recently purchased by Abby Reno and her husband, Ryan Nordland, the retail shop and tasting room boasts a 5,000-square-foot location on Golden Valley Circle. Abby is the daughter of City Vineyard founder, Becky Reno, who also founded City Brew, which operates statewide. Their newly constructed storefront sells wine and craft beer, along with an array of gourmet foods. “We’re the ideal place to find pairing items for a dinner party or to tasting our wines, craft beers, cheeses and other specialty food items,” Abby said. Planned events for wine and beer tastings are advertised on social media and at Cityvineyardwine.com. There are also learning events in which wine producers share their secrets in the room that holds more than 10,000 bottles of wine and 40 feet of beer coolers stocked with top craft beers from around the world. In 2008 the shop added gourmet foods such as cheeses, fresh baked bread and other options from various regions around the globe.

Brewer Dental Center 2900 Central Ave., Buildings #1 & #2 Brewer Dental Heights 710 Main St. “Our philosophy has always been about giving patients what they want when they want it,” said Dr. Kevin Brewer. For the doctors and staff at Brewer Dental Center, that means providing comprehensive dental care that’s convenient, comfortable and affordable. With offices on Billings’ West End and in the Heights, patients have easy access to quality dental care. With hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday and Saturday coverage from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., they have rewritten the book on convenience. On top of that, same-day appointments, whole family hygiene visits, sedation dentistry and

A day away from daily annoyances is what the co-owners of Central Wellness offer clients. “People come here for the opportunity to clear their minds and put the world aside; it’s having a moment to themselves,” said Ali Mitchell, chief operating officer. The day spa has been open for five years, providing massages, facial, manicures, pedicures, body treatments and chemical peels. “Massage is our most popular offering,” Mitchell said. “And, our facials are done by a master aesthetician well-versed in skin care, that is customized for each person. “ Mitchell said her staff of five is “well trained and passionate. What our customers love the most is that everything here is customized for them. Everybody feels special when they come in the door. Time is a luxury, and we want our clients to take some for themselves.”

in-house orthodontic and pediatric specialists mean that it’s all about you, and your family. The doctors on staff are trained in all the latest dental technologies and procedures, including digital radiographs, 3D imaging, guided implant surgery, lasers, implant dentures, wisdom tooth removal, root canal therapy, sedation dentistry, pediatric dentistry, sleep apnea, orthodontics, Invisalign, veneers, Zoom Whitening, cosmetic crowns and cosmetic dentures to name just a few. “Basically we do it all from cleanings to implants to orthodontics to kid visits,” Brewer said. As part of their ongoing effort to meet the communities’ dental needs, Brewer Dental Center also provides a membership opportunity in their Advantage Plan for individuals who don’t have dental insurance. This is one more way Brewer Dental is filling in the gaps when it comes to access to care and affordability. For an annual fee, patients can enroll in the plan, potentially saving thousands of dollars in dental care. “For example, the regular price of an adult cleaning is $109, if the patient is a member of the Brewer Dental Advantage Plan the cost is just $74,” Brewer explained. Savings can quickly add up, as every dental procedure is reduced between 10 and 50 percent with no annual cap. In addition to providing the highest quality dental care, Brewer Dental Center has always believed in giving back to the community. Each year Brewer Dental sponsors more than 50 sporting teams, visits elementary schools, provides Free Smile Makeovers, donates to charitable organizations, and puts on their favorite event in February — Dentistry From The Heart. “It’s a national program, and we’re the nation’s largest single provider for Dentistry From The Heart in terms of dollars donated and the number of patients cared for,” Dr. Brewer said. This year Brewer Dental served 421 patients and donated more than $150,000 in free dental care bringing their 11th anniversary total to 3,364 patients treated and more than $1.1 million in donated dentistry.

Granite Health and Fitness supports and stays active in the Billings’ community. Granite is the official strength and conditioning partner for MSU Yellowjacket athletics and the official health club of the Billings Mustangs. We have the knowledge about new products. At the same time we do offer conventional products, too.” Greengross said the store’s 80 to 100 employees are trained with the best information. “We are the resource element to walk people through trying any new product. Our team will be there to help you through that and find that community element for support. ... A lot of times it can be stressful to adopt a new diet so we want to make that easier,” she said. Locally sourced foods acquired through local distributors are seen throughout the store, Greengross added.

Rehder Balance and Hearing Clinic 1101 N. 27th St. Doctors of Audiology Douglas Rehder, Tracy Hayden and Crystal Dvorak along with Licensed Dispenser Brandy Dillon offer professional diagnosis and treatment of hearing and balance disorders. Doug Rehder and his staff strive to ensure patient care is highly personalized, respectful, informative and compassionate. The clinic was honored to be voted Billings’ Best Hearing Aid Provider in 2016 and 2017. “We evaluate and treat each individual’s hearing lifestyle to maximize their hearing. Thanks to enhanced technology, we work to restore normal hearing as closely as possible. We spend extra time with patients to find practical and workable solutions and endeavor to make every patient experience a success story. We understand that improving quality of hearing and balance fundamentally improves a patient’s quality of life,” Rehder said. In addition to providing comprehensive hearing care for infant to adult patients, the audiologists diagnose and treat dizziness and balance disorders. They also provide cochlear implant candidacy evaluations and are involved in follow-up programming, troubleshooting and audiological services following cochlear implant surgery. Botox injections, laser treatments and fillers for cosmetic enhancements; hair removal, body sculpting and contouring; massage therapy and reflexology. It is all at Tallman Medical Spa, which opened in 2005. “We are a medical spa, operating under a medical oversight. That is what sets us apart,” said Michelle Qualls, practice manager. “We operate under a licensed, board certified dermatologist, Dr. Phillip Tallman.” A physician’s assistant performs all injections, a licensed aesthetician provides facial and skin care and a licensed cosmetologist works on hand and nail treatments. Massage therapists are also professionally trained and licensed. These professionals have a typical clientele of females, age 30 and older, yet Tallman does have a segment of male clientele.

Nail-issimo! 2215 Broadwater Ave.

Teresa Spitzer is an accomplished nail technician with 27 years on the job, and for the past 21, she has also been a spa and salon owner, overseeing business functions, too. “It is so crazy in here,” she said, telling how busy she is each day. But, she said she centers on strong commitment to all people, customers and employees. “As salon owner I will say the clients are the heart of our business, and they know it,” she added. Open 21 years, Nail-issimo! provides a complete listing of salon and spa services. The menu begins with all hair services like color, cut, style and extensions; skin treat-

ments like facials, microdermabrasion, waxing, lash extensions; massage; and hand and feet treatments. “We do 4,000 pedicures a year,” Spitzer said. “It’s an awesome industry, and I work with amazing women. We call ourselves spa girls,” Spitzer said. “I feel we are pretty cutting edge.” Part of the reason why readers selected Nail-issimo! is because of the way the staff works to cater to what customers want. Sptizer said her customers often bring along photos from magazines or Pinterest, and the staff works to accomplish the look.

Optical Store Barnett Opticians 2203 Broadwater Ave.

Syl Schied and the staff at Barnett Opticians can give you a clear outlook on the world. “Technology for creating and fitting lenses is growing by leaps and bounds,” said Schied, owner of Barnett Opticians, “and we use it to create the crispest vision with the best fit for our patients.” As a Billings optical mainstay since 1952, Barnett Opticians serves multi-generational

customers. “It’s our customer service,” said Schied of the business’ success. “We take the extra time to be sure that everything is the best it can be. Plus, we have many long-time, experienced employees.” Barnett Opticians offers the latest technology and the best choices from prescription sunglasses, safety glasses to sports goggles. Ultra-thin, non-glare, high-definition digital lenses give vision a “wow” factor. “Truly, you can see the difference. There’s nothing in eye care that we cannot do,” Schied said. But, the best part is matching clients to the right combination of eyewear for their lifestyle and vision, he added. As an 12-time Readers’ Choice winner, there’s no doubt that Barnett Opticians knows eyewear.

Two branches (one in Billings’ West End and one in the Heights) make tanning convenient. At both locations, Wegner said her employees easily become friends with their regular customers. “If someone doesn’t come in as planned, you wonder about them and worry. You get so used to seeing each person that you definitely develop friendships,” she added.

Tattoo Shop Sovereign Tattoo 2040 Rosebud Dr. # 9

Cameron Scott, owner and sole tattoo

artist at Sovereign Tattoo, has been working as an industry professional for more than five years. And, he knows that his industry has changed, yet still carries some controversy. “Through the years, tattoos always seemed to be popular with a certain demographic population, and (that population) regularly changes. I think television and social media have a lot to do with our popularity currently,” Scott said. “Usually, I work with younger female clientele. Those females 18 to 27 years old are getting more tattoos than younger males. I think the females handle the long, drawn-out pain better, too. Maybe it is kind of like a rite of passage. Guys turn 18, hey, they can smoke, go to the military and get a tattoo. Now, gals are getting the tattoo.” About eight years ago, he began to learn the technical side of tattooing on his own completing basic tattoos “underground.” Eventually he developed expert skills, and became a professional tattoo artist. “I had to pick things up, learn as I go, never having had the opportunity to work with a mentor,” Scott said. He annually completes a training and certification course about blood-borne pathogens.

Being in his current location for about two years, Scott spends 60 hours a week on site, with about 35 to 40 hours weekly spent completing tattoo art. “I do a lot of super detailed stuff - it is all subjective to the client, the body part, location and skin,” he said. Another significant portion of his business is completing “coverup” tattoos for clients who have received a now-unwanted tattoo applied by different artist. Scott knows that the art he is covering up is what gives his business a bad name. “It’s giving me a run for my money, that’s for sure,” he said. “I am the exact opposite of what people may think. I’m a family man, never been to prison; I don’t smoke. … I am not a stereotype, I don’t work in a dark basement, smoking, drinking and tattooing all night. I aspire to be not that,” he added.

Weight Loss Center Central Wellness 1010 Central Ave. Suite 2

“Life is not enjoyable when you don’t

have that well feeling anymore,” said Ali Mitchell, who for five years has co-owned Central Wellness with her mother, Janine Griffin. Though their weight-loss program, they aim to help people lose weight and maintain their new vitality, Mitchell said. “Our program emphasizes continued weight management even after the initial loss. Because we encourage our clients to make a lifestyle change, we believe that the initial weight loss is only part of what we offer,” Mitchell said. “We teach them how to eat for a lifetime of success. And, they weigh in and receive counseling weekly. “Each one of our coaches can empathize with our clients, having had their own journeys to weight management and maintenance. To start, each client sees a nurse practitioner for a blood draw; then medical conditions are assessed. We address the client’s metabolic issues, allowing them to have greater success.” Mitchell said most important is the sense of community at Central Wellness. “We give them a support team. There are always successes and failures making a life change. …After the program, we are still giving them tips weekly, and they can always come weigh in,” Mitchell said.

Li’s father, Fanfu Li, and Li’s husband, Dave Parker, combined to bring more than 30 years of restaurant experience to the family-owned and operated business. “They put a lot of time and energy into creating wonderful recipes for our guests, they take pride in customers’ satisfaction of their dining experiences at our restaurant” Alice Li said. Grand Garden’s loyal customers and hardworking staff are especially appreciated. “I want to thank our customers for voting us the best Chinese restaurant and supporting us for all of these years. Thanks also, to all of our wonderful employees for helping to provide the best dining experience. It wouldn’t be possible without your continued support,” said Parker. The restaurant offers a daily lunch buffet from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a dinner buffet from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. In addition, patrons can order off the large menu or order from the full takeout menu. Beginning in November, the restaurant will be expanding to include a banquet room, perfect for larger groups who want a little privacy or those who want to hold a holiday party there. “Our food is very fresh and tasteful; once you try us you’ll come back,” added Alice Li.

With City Brew’s reputation for beautiful coffee, locally-sourced treats and customer service that delights each guest, it’s no wonder they’ve been voted Billings “Best Coffee Shop” for the 16th year in a row. City Brew customers connect with the stores because of great coffee. But, they continue to come back because of the baristas who know the customers and take care of them. City Brew prides itself on unparalleled customer service as they strive to provide a unique experience for each guest. Every customer is greeted and sincerely thanked for visiting City Brew. City Brew also carefully selects and locally roasts only the top 2 percent of Arabica beans from the finest coffee regions in the world. Those beans are roasted right here in the Magic City. This may be the Readers’ Choice award that is the most bittersweet. Log Cabin Bakery, a Billings doughnut institution, was chosen by the readers as the best doughnut in town. It closed its doors on Sept. 30, after the owners couldn’t find someone to carry on its sweet legacy. If you had a great doughnut in Billings, you probably had something from Log Cabin, and folks had their favorites – from the maple long johns with bacon to the apple fritters. The styles would change over time or even day-to-day, but the standards like the chocolate cake donuts remained. “Our donuts are made from scratch and they are hand cut. We don’t use a machine for cutting,” co-owner Helen Brown said. Family Restaurant Montana Club 1791 Majestic Lane

This year, readers have chosen The Montana Club as Best Family Restaurant, which is no small accomplishment for the Montana-based establishment. After being open just two years in Billings, General Manager Annette Wellhaven said her staff keeps things hopping for guests in each age group. By serving a menu of foods and beverages for a wide variety of tastes, the restaurant provides a firm basis for developing relationships between Montana Club staff and customers. “The best thing about the Montana Club is we offer something for everybody. From a young child to teens and young adults, to grandmas and grandpas, we have a menu for all,” Wellhaven said. “Our servers simply like people; they enjoy meeting new guests and the conversation to find out a bit ab out them,” she added. Adding to the experience Wellhaven said is the Montana Club’s Birthday Special, in which guests on the day of their birthdate receive a percentage of their entrée equal to their age. A 99-year-old diner enjoys a whopping 99 percent off any entree to help celebrate. “And, several times a week we see groups of multiple generations dining with us,” Wellhaven added. They come for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and when not in groups diners can enjoy small intimate meals that are as common as large gatherings.

Food Truck Sandee’s Various Locations

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TRUST!

Moving among various locations As a Billings mainstay from the 1960s through 1990s, Sandee’s Drive In spoke to tradition, and is why the new form of Sandee’s was named Best Food Truck. Operating since May, 2016, owners Scot and Jennifer Ireton serve the same burgers, fries and tater tots as the original Sandee’s, which was owned by Jennifer’s mother, Shirley Hampton. “(Her customers) know exactly what they can order (at our truck.) I want it to be the same stuff I was cooking back in the ‘80s. I don’t want it to be new-and-improved,” Ireton said. Sandee’s has worked hard to make finding the food venue a breeze. The locations can be found daily at Sandees406 on Facebook. There’s also an app for Sandees. Sandees also has two trailers so that different parts of Billings can be served as well as Laurel.

Frozen Yogurt Shop Spinners 3031 Grand Ave. #200

It’s a frozen treat that can’t be beat! And, for the fifth year in a row, Readers’ Choice voters agree. Spinners has won the award every year it has been in business. Imagine more than 50 types of toppings for your 24 different flavors of frozen yogurt and sorbet. Vanilla and chocolate ice cream are always available. The “Spinner cup” allows you to create your own blended flavors in a flurry of flavor. Cones, waffle cones and waffle bowls are also available. Spinners even has three-compartment cup dividers for those who like a variety of flavors in one cup—the possibilities are truly endless!

Ice Cream

Big Dipper Ice Cream 100 N. Broadway When you think of Montana, the first thing that comes to mind may not be ice cream. But part of the Treasure State’s treasures are its ice cream and no ice cream shop has a bigger following than Big Dipper Ice Cream. Most recognize the institution from its Missoula location, but starting in April 2015, The Big Dipper has called Billings home, located at one of the highest traffic locations in the Magic City at the corner of North Broadway and 1st Avenue North. In two years, it has taken back-to-back Readers’ Choice Awards for the best ice cream. While it features many of

the frozen dish standards, like chocolate and vanilla, it also has Montana favorites like Huckleberry or the exotics like Bananas Foster or Kiwi Apple sorbet. “We use as many locally sourced ingredients as we can for our homemade ice cream,” said Billings general manager Lia Munson. The Big Dipper features new flavors daily, but sticks to the traditional ice cream desserts, rich and creamy sundaes, shakes, root beer floats, heaping cones of ice cream and freshly pressed waffle cones. “We let ice cream be the star of our show,” Munson said.

International Food Oktoberfest German Restaurant 3839 Grand Ave.

Customers don’t have to speak German or even like bratwurst, they just have to like international fine dining at Oktoberfest German Restaurant. The Billings restaurant is owned by Ernie Adams and his wife, Birgitt. She was born and raised in Frankfurt, Germany, and the restaurant’s menu incorporates much of what she learned about cooking while growing up. “Our menu includes her heritage and a lot of her family recipes. She grew up making German dishes under the watchful eye of her Oma (Grandma) and Mutti (Mother),” Ernie Adams said. He added that three of their top-selling entrees are jäger-

The words have been synonymous since 1976: broasted chicken and Sud’s Hut. Using a pressure cooker, the chicken is quickly cooked in oil, sealing in the juices and flavor. A mid-town mainstay, Sud’s Hut also offers ribs, seafood, steaks, sandwiches and burgers along with lunch and breakfast specials. Long-time manager, Tricia Donaldson believes the homey, family atmosphere, decent prices and friendly service have contributed to Sud’s Huts for more than 30 years in Billings. “We thank our many multi-generational customers for being with us all these years. And if you have never been to Sud’s Hut - come on out, give us a try!” said Donaldson.

“You can be as creative as you want,” said business coowner Dave Diehl. From gummy bears to Oreo crumbles to fresh fruit, cut daily, to chopped nuts, Spinners has enough topping options that your head really will spin. Yum! But it’s not just about tempting treats, Spinners is a place where family and friends can gather again and again for something new. Co-owner Julie Diehl, who is often onsite, remarked that families, kids, sports teams and grandparents all love the clean, fun atmosphere of Spinners and notes that gift cards make the perfect reward or stockingstuffer.

regularly available for sale at its Billings location, which has been open for 25 years. Through that time, the local management has seen what types of food the local buyers want, and Costco is happy to oblige. Though the bakery, freezer area and wine displays do draw plenty of members, it’s their meat department that sets the Billings store apart from the other Costco Warehouses nationwide. “Members come for our high quality, great pricing and of course, the ground beef. We sell more (ground beef) than any other warehouse in the company,” said Daimon Deleon, membership manager of the Billings store. And, through their voting customers, Costco has received the Readers’ Choice Award for Best Fresh Meat & Seafood. That is not surprising, as ranching is one of Montana’s leading industries. “Our beef comes from all over the country,” Deleon explained. “We buy from large packing houses that label Country of Origin (USA). “People come for our competitive pricing, high quality and freshness (especially seafood),” Deleon added. “We offer higher quality cuts two-piece sirloin , brisket off spareribs, rib-eye cap steaks with more demanding trim specifications than retail meat providers (offer). Our seafood arrives fresh three times a week and is repackaged and quality checked every day.”

“We met every Monday morning making our decisions about building the business until we opened June 18, 2012,” Shroyer said. Ken Schlencker and Jay Strever joined them later as fellow co-owners, and Hastings continues as head brewer using his previous experience working for two other Montana breweries. In addition to this year’s Billings Gazette Readers’ Choice award, Überbrew snagged four medals - two gold, a silver and a bronze - out of their five beer entries at the Great American Brew Fest held in Denver during October 2016. Most notably, they were named Best Small Brewing Company of the Year and Small Brewer of the Year. “We cleaned house. It was a big deal because it’s kind of the Oscars for beer,” Shroyer said. Four years before those awards, the founders were still scratching their heads. “We are still in the midst of overcoming obstacles. The microbrew team environment

“I would definitely call this California style,” Nuno said. When Juan speaks of Mexican cooking or other Mexican restaurants, he has great things to say about the variety, just as there is no single definition of American style food. Juan focuses on cooking recipes that take advantage of ingredients that can be gotten fresh here. “Our salsa may taste different from day to day just slightly because of the peppers. They’re fresh, so they’re not going to be the same and people come sometimes just for the chips and salsa,” said Cindy Nuno, one of Juan and Nelly’s daughter who helps run the group of Montana restaurants. Because all of the items are cooked from scratch, customers get the best flavors and good food that can’t be found everywhere. Juan loves his carne asada, the enchiladas and the fajitas. “I love making the fajitas because they come out, and the smell... every head turns,” Nuno said. It’s the sizzle, the smell and then the fresh taste that pleases the senses – and that’s what good food is about, having that sensory experience. Juan credits his dedicated staff and loyal following of customers for the restaurant’s continued success. Juan shoulders much of the cooking and food prep responsibilities. “Our food comes from our family to your family,” he said.

The Readers’ Choice honor for best wings goes to the West End establishment that has the word “wings” in its name, Buffalo Wild Wings. “We’ve got everything from chicken wraps to chicken flatbread. And, of course, the chicken wings and everything in between,” said Buffalo Wild Wings director of marketing David Moorehead. “For sports fans, we continue to be the best. When guests walk in, the atmosphere speaks for itself, especially since our remodel; it looks like being in a stadium,” Moorhead, who has been in his position for more than three years. He said that their 2015 remodel carried the stadium design to their newly created three-season patio by adding garage doors around their existing outdoor seating space. “Overall, remodel lets us continue to serve fan favorites,” he said, listing their fried pickles, chili queso dip and their house sampler as best sellers. For meals, he said the Cheese Curd Bacon Burger and Buffalo Bleu Burger remain top options. “Since we opened in 2005, the owner put forth the effort to be a family sports restaurant, not a sports bar,” Morehead added. Their menu reflects options for guests of all ages. Due to customer requests, their bar that has 30 beers on tap keeps a few Montana microbrews on their list.

BEST WINGS!

7 years in a row!

2342 Grand Avenue 656-6282

We don’t campaign for your Readers Choice vote, so we’re always happily surprised when we win.

It must be the ice cream! We’ve been giving our customers free ice cream in the summer for many years, and we know they like it because they talk about it so much. But we know there are other things our customers like also… • They like to be treated with respect and dignity. We say we are “Ladies and Gentlemen serving Ladies and Gentlemen” and we want every customer, when they leave our store, to leave feeling they had been treated honestly and honorably. • They like us to have their favorite brand of motor oil. That is why you see 125 different oils available in each of our stores. Oil companies don’t like that, but we explained that we don’t work for oil companies; we work for our customers. • They do not like us to “hawk” things on them. Throughout the history of the lube center industry the biggest complaint that people have had is the tendency of companies – usually in big cities – to try to sell them extra services that they often don’t even need. We don’t do that. We recommend, we remind, we offer, but we never sell. We judge our success by how soon you come back, not by how much you buy. Providing our customers what they want does not happen by accident. We work hard at it, and we train hard also. We take this award as a sign that we are doing a pretty good job!

ENTERTAINMENT Pub Station 2502 1st Ave. N.

Since opening its multi-use downtown entertainment venue for live music in 2014 and expanding in 2016, Anne Kosempa and Sean Lynch’s Pub Station has steadily climbed the ranks of Pollstar’s Top Worldwide Clubs list. That means that in 2017, The Pub Station surpassed larger venues in bigger markets by offering a huge variety of acts and dedication to live music downtown. In addition to live entertainment, The Pub Station rents space for private events including weddings, fundraisers, trade shows, holiday parties and more. “We do so many different types of events, so everybody is a client. Most of our stuff involves national touring acts,” Lynch added. The Pub Station serves beer and wine, with 32 draft choices and a large variety of cans. Recently, Pie Guys Pizzeria opened a location inside the Pub Station, offering customers and concertgoers pizza by the slice, whole pizzas, wings, salads and more. Through parent company 11:11 Entertainment, Lynch also promotes live entertainment throughout Montana and Wyoming.

SPORTS BAR

Grandstand Sports Bar & Casino 905 Grand Ave. Two things made Jevon Lorenz particularly happy this fall. First, the business where he leads a staff of 15 has received a very public award as Best Sports Bar in Billings. Second, televisions are full of football. “We love football season at the Grandstand. We are glad that it’s here,” said Lorenz, who has worked at the Grandstand for 12 years, the past five as general manager. Football is seen nearly each day on their six big screens and 12 smaller televisions. “We try to have every football game shown on a different TV on Sundays… Of course, Sunday is the big draw,” he said. With the technology and the teamwork of his service staff, he knows why sports fans keep coming back to the sports bar. “We are a neighborhood bar, too, with many customers who live around here and come here,” Lorenz said. “We are a 21-andolder adult day care.” And they feed those customers. “We have the best wings in town bar none. Whenever you sell over a ton of wings a month you know you are doing pretty good,” he said.

Pub Station, Readers’ Choice winner for best live entertainment, is host to numerous musical acts year round.

“I believe, even with all the bars downtown, everyone ends up here at the Crystal because they want to be a star. It’s amazing how many people want to be part of the action during our karaoke, which we’ve been doing for a decade or longer,” said Rosie DeMent, manager of the Crystal Lounge on North 28th Street. She said customers come to listen, have a few drinks and meet friends. “Michael May is our DJ and he runs the music every night. He is a very good performer, very welcoming and he’s got a great radio voice. A lot of people come in just to see him,” DeMent said. Karaoke happens from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m. During the music, customers can earn prizes, DeMent said. Singing has its rewards, she added. Sunday is Ladies’ Day and “sometimes we offer special prizes like gift certificates for dinner at a local downtown restaurant. “We do fun things all the time. Bar side, we have 12 employees who work different shifts. It gives customers a variety of faces to see, and most of our bartenders have been here for five years or more,” DeMent said.

For 17 years, Rio Grand Sports Bar & Casino has been welcoming players with a constantly changing, yet highly reliable menu of traditional fare. The staff of 20 is just as reliable as the tasty menu items, as most have been at Rio Grand for all 17 years that Ray Johns has owned the bar and casino. “Winning this (award) makes me feel awesome,” Johns said. Owning a casino for nearly two decades, he knows a thing or two about how people feel to win. “The more winners you have each day, the more customers you have who keep coming back and back and back.” Their full service restaurant also keeps customers visiting frequently. Rio Grand serves breakfast all day long every day, and customers always enjoy the evolving menu specials, as well. “Mostly, everybody likes the fish and chips, prime rib and eggs, and New York steaks,” Johns said.
