Just off I-90 at the corner of Zoo Drive and Pierce Parkway is the beautifully designed Underriner Motors campus. Spread out over several acres in Billings’ burgeoning West End, the development features two stunning buildings – Underriner Honda and the gleaming new Underriner Buick, Hyundai and Volvo stores. “Ten years ago I could see that Gabel Road, Zoo Drive and Shiloh Road were going to be highly prominent areas for the retail sector,” said Bill Underriner, CEO and President of Underriner Motors. With a clear vision of the future of automotive business, Bill along with his wife Mary and sons Blake and Kyle who are also owners, made a significant investment and purchased ten acres in the highly desirable area. It was a smart move that would prove to be a stellar business decision.

Making design history
With a sleek, modern design, the newest building on the Underriner campus houses three separate brands – Buick, Hyundai and Volvo – plus a state-of-the-art service department. “It’s highly unusual for manufacturers to approve having multiple brands under one roof,” said Bill, noting that each manufacturer typically wants a standalone showroom and service center. Working with Buick, Hyundai and Volvo, Bill made a unique pitch. “We designed a showroom that is actually segmented into three distinct CASEY PAGE/Gazette Staff showrooms, one for each brand,” he said. room would follow the manufacturers’ image program to ensure brand reinforcement. “And we pitched one additional, very unusual feature,” Bill said. Knowing that more guests come into the service department than the showroom, Bill had the architects design the building with the service entrance at the front. “Service is very important. If a dealership offers exceptional service, guests will return. Our goal is to give every guest the best service they have ever experienced – and designing the building to feature the service department at the front furthers that goal,” he said. Not only did the design win over Buick, Hyundai and Volvo, but it

was so impressive that last March Automotive News featured a front page story on Underriner and the new multishowroom design.
Show-stopping showrooms
The new Buick, Hyundai and Volvo showroom is a study in classic elegance. Outside, the building radiates a contemporary vibe with massive walls of windows capped by a ribbon of crisp, white walls. Pops of bright blue background punctuate the Volvo and Hyundai showroom signage, while a sophisticated arched entry highlights the Buick showroom. Inside, the building is awash in natural light filtering in through multiple skylights plus the expansive windows. High gloss, pale
gray tile flooring provides a beautiful underlay for displaying new models of Buicks and Hyundais, while lightcolored, wood-grained horizontal tile beautifully complements the Volvo vehicles on display. Each of the three brands is subtly separated by a half-wall made of glass and steel. The overall effect is to cement the uniqueness of the individual brands while infusing an air of openness and transparency throughout the entire space. And transparency, Bill will tell you, is at the core of everything Underriner Motors does.
Transparency in motion
“The car business has evolved substantially over the past 30 years,” said Bill, noting that the Internet has been the single biggest changemaker in the car business. “Transparency in relationships is key – it has to be,” he said. According to Underriner, today’s guests are highly educated about makes and models before they ever step into a showroom. That knowledge, Bill noted, facilitates matching a guest with his or her ideal vehicle. And when it comes to pricing, everything is on the table. continued on page 4

“All of our vehicles have a price clearly posted on the window – even our used car inventory,” Bill said. “We will sit down with a guest and appraise their trade-in on the spot. Everything we do is straightforward and transparent.”

When people come to the showroom, the exceptional experience starts before they ever enter the building. “Our guests – we call customers ‘guests’ – will find that we offer an inviting showroom with none of the heavy pressure,” Bill said. Every sales associate is fully trained and thoroughly knowledgeable about the products. “Whether you come in to buy a car or just want to browse, our associates will take time to give you the greatest car experience you will ever have,” Bill said.
There is also a sumptuously-appointed guest lounge where guests can wait while paperwork is processing or when their vehicle is in the shop. The main lounge features comfortable, black leather club chairs and sofas, plus a fully-stocked coffee and soft beverage bar. Just a few steps away, a second “quiet” lounge has modern mini-desks where busy professionals can plug in their computers and work. For those with little ones in tow, the play center with a hands-on wall play station will keep kids entertained for hours.

For Bill and Mary Underriner, running a consortium of car dealerships and service centers is more than a business, it’s a family legacy. “This year we’re celebrating 70 years in business,” said Bill, CEO and President of Underriner Motors. That milestone began in 1944 when Mary’s grandfather Floyd Whitaker founded Billings Buick which soon became Whitaker Buick. Later, Mary’s father George Selover bought the dealership, and in 2001 Bill purchased the business from Selover, renaming it Underriner Motors.

The dealership at that time included four brands – Buick, Volvo, Honda and Jeep. In 2004, Bill acquired the Hyundai dealership, expanding the business. Bill, along with his wife Mary and sons Blake and Kyle, who are also owners, are proud of the long history the dealership has had in Billings – and they are bullish on the future. For his part, Bill recently served for one year as the Chair of the National Auto Dealers Association during which he logged 350,000 air miles and visited six countries.
“That was such an honor, to be appointed by my peers to serve in that capacity,” Bill said. And when the one-year term concluded, Bill immediately focused on building the new Buick, Hyundai and Volvo showrooms on Billings’ West End.

Standing in the new showroom, Bill looks proudly at the facility and his team of more than 85 employees.
“This dealership is very family oriented,” Bill said. “I take good care of my employees, so they can take good care of our guests.” He also noted that there has never been a better time to buy a car. “The manufacturers have their own financing sources which offer highly advantageous rates and incentives,” he said. “Plus, the designs have never been as good as they are today.”

According to Bill, Buick has produced a great lineup of new vehicles. “In 30 years in the business, I have never seen a Buick lineup as strong as it is today,” he said. While Buick was previously viewed as an ‘older person’s car,’ today, that is no longer the case. “The styling is definitely very sporty, and we’re selling a lot of these vehicles to younger people,” Bill said, pointing to the Regal Sport sedan with its sleek, modern design as just one example.

After picking up their car, owners can tour Europe and then bring the vehicle back to Gothenburg to ship home. “And you pay less for the car in Sweden than you would here – it’s a great deal,” Bill said.
