Missoula Hellgate coach Jeff Hays insists he didn’t lose much sleep over the Montana version of The Decision. As four-star recruit Tres Tinkle weighed whether to follow his father, Wayne — who was moving from Missoula to take over the Oregon State men’s basketball job — or stay at Hellgate for his senior season, Hays was content to have as little influence as possible. “I told Tres last spring I felt like we would be good either way,” Hays said. “I said I have some really good players besides him that don’t get the recognition that they normally would … but with him, he brings that credibility, that presence, and gives us a little more room for error on any given night. But we don’t want to take that for granted.” And as soon as Tinkle announced he was staying at Hel lgate, t he K nights, who have four starters back from last year’s state runner-up team, reinforced their tag as a favorite to win their second title in three seasons. “I’m sure there were some teams across the state that had their eye on the championship thinking, ‘Dang, it just got a little harder,’ ” said Capital coach Guy Almquist, who returns no starters from last year’s title-winning team. “Hellgate certainly has a head start, I know that much. And not just because of Tinkle. They’ve got three other seniors (Devin Bray, Rhett Baerlocher and Mark Lebsock) who got lots of playing time last year. They’re going to have a nice team, there’s no doubt about that.”

There’s also no doubt there’s a group of haves and have-nots this season. Not in terms of talent – five of the state’s top 10 scorers were underclassmen last season – but in terms of experience. Billings Senior (zero returning starters), Kalispell Flathead (zero), Kalispell Glacier (zero) and Missoula Sentinel (one) join Capital as teams searching for new contributors. Meanwhile, Hellgate, Billings Skyview, Billings West, Great Falls and Helena are among those who have plenty of veteran leadership. In Kendal Manuel — who is the top returning scorer in the state after averaging 21.3 points per game — Dixon Strong and Nolan McHugh, the Falcons have a trio of players that combined for 41 points per game. Behind them is a batch of athletic talent. “I like Hellgate, but if you look one through 10, (the Falcons) have the deepest roster that I’m aware of,” Almquist said of the Falcons. Great Falls has the highest-scoring trio in the state in Brendan Howard (17.6 ppg), Matt Wyman (15.2 ppg) and Lukas Vining (14.8 ppg). First-year West coach Kelly Darragh welcomes back all-state starters Jared Samuleson and Danny Betcher, and Helena’s Henry Garrett and Chase South are both four-year starters. The gap between teams who are deep in experience and those who aren’t might seem wide now. But Hays had a cautionary warning that that gulf will likely get smaller. “There are enough good athletes and enough coaches who coach their kids up that over the course of the season those teams will get better,” Hays said.

By GREG RACHAC grachac@billingsgazette.com The 2013-14 Class A boys basketball season ended the same way many of the preceding years had: With Columbia Falls and Dillon knocking heads for the state championship. It was the fourth time in a six-year stretch that the powerhouse programs played for the title, and it went the way of Columbia Falls, 56-47. Of course, those teams lost their share of talent — the Wildcats’ Jared Trinastich and the Beavers’ Troy Scott both graduated — and are reshuffling as a new season gets underway. But don’t be surprised if both are still in the mix come March. Dillon and coach Terry Thomas should be one of the deepest teams in Class A. And Cary Finberg’s Columbia Falls squad, with Ty Morgan still on board, will find ways to win. As for individual star power, there’s plenty left over. Havre’s Dane Warp is a pure scorer. He averaged 25 points per game as a sophomore while helping the Blue Ponies reach the state tournament. Frenchtown’s Bridger Truett is one of the top players on the western side of the state. Truett was part of a dynamic offense that included high-scoring guard John Chapman. But Chapman is gone, so look for Truett to carry more of the load. Corvallis’ Jess Sims will always be a factor. Sims made waves when he walked away from defending champion Stevensville in the middle of last season and missed the remainder of the year due to MHSA transfer rules, so he’s hungry. And on the local front, Hardin’s Oliver Wallace, Billings Central’s Dillon Meyer and Laurel’s Zac Allen are three of the top players in the Eastern A.

Central begins its third season under coach Jim Stergar. The Rams missed the state tournament last year but bring back four starters. Recognized more for its football prowess these days, Central is itching for a better ending. “All these guys had great football seasons. They all had honors,” Stergar said. “They’re winners. That’s the great thing about coaching these guys at Central, and that can carry us a long way. “I think we have a lot of the tools we need to get back to the state tournament and play on Saturday night.” Laurel, the Rams’ archrival 15 miles down the road, has played in four consecutive semifinal games at state — but lost each time. The Locomotives aren’t short on depth, and Allen works as hard as anyone around the basket. Tyler Thompson and Cooper Love should also provide much of the scoring punch for coach Pat Hansen. “They have some good, tough kids that know how to play basketball,” said Stergar, whose team has lost 10 consecutive regular-season games to Laurel. “Pat always has them playing really, really well.” Miles City brings back four starters from a team that stunned the Class A world with a state tourney berth last year. Timmy Regan and Austin Stradley are two of the top guards in the Eastern division. Other contending teams could include Butte Central, which won 17 games last season but missed the state tournament after a crippling double-overtime loss to Stevensville in the Southwestern A divisional. The Maroons are again coach by Brodie Kelly, who has won at a .677 clip and is entering his 11th season. Belgrade and Polson, which each made the state tournament a year ago, could also be factors.

By GREG RACHAC grachac@billingsgazette.com Laurel, under the steady direction of coach Amber Griffith, is making a habit of playing deep into the girls basketball season. The Locomotives have suited up on Saturday night at the Class A state tournament in four consecutive seasons. They won the championship in 2013, placed second in 2011, and took fourth in 2012 and again last season. With three starters coming back from a team that went 19-5 and played in the semifinal round at state — a list that includes senior guard Allie McGrath — you know the Locos aren’t lacking confidence. “We’re proud of the tradition we’ve built here,” said Griffith, who is 88-48 entering her seventh season. “We have high expectations. We try to keep it in perspective and get better every day, but we want to get back to the state tournament, of course.” A former standout player at Miles City, Griffith is keen to the topography of the Eastern A. And she also knows she has a gem in McGrath, whose value can be measured both on and off the court. “She’s going to pick up right where she left off,” Griffith said. “She’s a vocal leader and she plays hard all the time. Her teammates really look up to her. They count on her, and she’s always delivered. “She’s one of our hardest-working kids, and good things happen when you work hard.” Laurel is just one of several teams hoping to be in contention by the time March rolls around. But Hamilton, which will host the state tournament, might be the favorite with all it has returning. The Broncs lost to Havre in the championship game last season, but are stocked with two of Class A’s best players in Taylor Goligoski and Jaylee Albert. Goligoski was named

the state’s Gatorade player of the year after her sophomore season two years ago. Hamilton is guard-laden, though it lacks height. Goligoski and Albert are considered to be the strongest guard combo in Class A. Defending champion Havre graduated two of its top players in Brandy Lambourne and Peyton Filius, but few coaches get as much out of his players as Dustin Kraske. “They’re always right there,” Griffith said. Frenchtown’s Vanessa Stavish was one of the top players in Class A over the past couple seasons, but she’s now playing at Montana State Billings. Still, the Broncs have been regulars at the state tournament of late and are led by two strong talents in Haley Cyr and Lacey Hochhalter. Elsewhere, Columbia Falls lost Haley Belgarde from last year’s third-place team, but Winter Kemppainen, a solid guard-forward tweener, is one returner the Wildkats will lean on. Columbia Falls knocked off Laurel in overtime in the consolation game at state. Billings Central begins its second season under coach Levi Osborne. The Rams graduated guard Allie Lucas, forward Justyn Juhl and a number of other key cogs — 45 points and 20 rebounds worth, in fact — but they’ll look to several new faces who have waited their turn. One returner to keep an eye on is guard Mariah Wittman, a junior who’s been in the starting rotation since her freshman season. Uncharacteristically, the Rams missed the state tournament last year despite a strong crop of veteran players. A new coach takes over at Miles City, which was the Eastern A’s other state tourney qualifier. Aaron Essex has been handed the reins from Jacqui Engstrom, and inherits a team led by senior post Kadie Heinle and junior guard Ashlie Larson. By JOHN LETASKY jletasky@billingsgazette.com When the trophy was presented and the fans cleared the arena at Montana State’s Brick Breeden Fieldhouse in Bozeman last year, the facts were the Fairfield Lady Eagles had gone 26-0 for their fourth straight Class B state championship and 104th consecutive win. It took Fairfield two overtimes against a tough and determined Malta team to pull out a 60-55 victory. Eighth-year Fairfield coach Dustin Gordon said his team graduated four starters in Jill Barta, Kaylee Baeth and twins Kourtney Coverdell and Kaylynn Coverdell. The 6-foot-3 Barta is now a forward at Gonzaga. While Gordon acknowledges there will be a period of adjustment, he knows who his starters will be. The Eagles also have transfers Liz Klinker and Natalie Klinker. Liz is a senior and is a guard/forward; Natalie is a 5-foot11 sophomore post. The sisters grew up in Fairfield, moved to Great Falls and have returned. Other key players will be junior guard Allie Steinbach and junior guard/forward Taleigh Isakson, who rotated as starters last season. Playing basketball for Fairfield this year are one senior, four juniors, nine sophomores and four freshmen. Gordon said some of the top teams are Bigfork, Missoula Loyola, Shepherd, Forsyth, Columbus, Manhattan, Malta and Choteau. But he’s not counting out his girls. Fairfield has won titles in six of the past seven years with its only title-game loss in that stretch coming to Malta 51-44 in 2010. “We only have one senior and are young,” Gordon said. “Even the girls who won last year have followed up some good years. We’ve had seven years in a row of being in the state championship game. It wasn’t one group of girls.

“The girls that we have now have been playing against that group of girls for a long time. That group of girls that just graduated had an undefeated streak for four years, but the players who graduated didn’t start every one of those games. It’s been an ongoing process. “The girls got to practice against the best team last year. When you are battling against a great team in practice, it will have some carryover.” The other teams who advanced to state last year were Deer Lodge, Columbus, Forsyth, Manhattan, Shepherd and Missoula Loyola. Fairfield and Malta have met in the title game in 2014, 2012, 2011, 2010 and 2009 in the past six years. Malta second-year coach Nate Hammond guided the M-ettes to a 24-2 record last year. He grew up in Whitewater, taught math in Bigfork and was a varsity girls basketball coach there for seven years. So, he’s familiar with the rivalry. “Gosh, if you look it up, I don’t know how many state championship games one or the other or both of them were in,” he said. “Over the past 15 years, it is mind-boggling. Either Malta or Fairfield, one or the other, is usually in it.” Malta should have the power to make another deep run with four starters returning in sophomore guard Sophia Stiles, senior post Darby Schye, junior forward Hailey Nicholson and senior guards Rebecca Smith and Markelle Lett, who split time as the starter. Junior guard Marley Manoukian and senior post Kelsey Kuehn should also contribute. The Mustangs only graduated one player, Mercedes Stiles. The players know what Hammond expects and he knows what they can do. Combine that with their depth, and the M-ettes could be tough. “When you have a good group of kids, it is exciting for anybody when they are coaching,” Hammond said.

By SLIM KIMMEL skimmel@billingsgazette.com After back-to-back second-place finishes at the Class C state boys basketball tournament, Westby-Grenora can no longer fly under the radar. It doesn’t matter that the Thunder haven’t won a conference championship in about 20 years, according to fifth-year coach Chad Solberg. “The last couple years, we haven’t really been the team — everyone knew we were pretty good, but we haven’t been the team that everyone’s after,” Solberg said. “Now, everyone’s going to be out to get us, and we think we’re going to get everyone’s best game night in and night out.” Westby-Grenora is braced for the Eastern division’s daily grind with four returning starters, including all-state guard Cooper Olson. Thomas Field also earned all-conference honors a year ago in District 2C. Fairview, Westby-Grenora’s 2C foe, advanced to the state semifinals last year, and is expected to be a contender again. Add Culbertson, Savage and Circle, and Hinsdale and Frazer from District 3C, and the East’s representatives will have earned their place at the state tournament at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark in March. “(The competition) is a real big deal, because there isn’t a heck of a lot of games where we know it’s going to be a blowout,” Solberg said. “Every night, we’ve got to play. When we get into tournaments and get those tight games, our kids aren’t nervous. It’s a huge plus.” The defending state champions will have a similarly challenging road. Box Elder ran roughshod over opponents last season on its way to a 26-0 record. The Bears defeated Westby-Grenora 74-54 in the championship in their closest game of last year’s tournament. MacDonald, who is in his fourth year as coach. “We’ve got a solid crew returning. We got some guys who would’ve liked to move up to varsity last year. We’ve got a couple guys that are ready to step into some roles. We’ll be a tough out, that’s for sure.” In the reconfigured Northern C, Box Elder is the preseason favorite in District 9C, but MacDonald is eager to see what ChesterJoplin-Inverness brings. The Hawks played in District 10C last season and advanced to the divisional tournament. Hays-Lodgepole will challenge at the top of the 9C, as well, but the newly formed 8C might be the most intriguing conference in the state. “In the 8C, you’ve got (Denton-GeyserStanford), who went to state,” MacDonald said. “Highwood’s got five really good ballplayers. And then Winnett-Grass Range … they’ve got four divisional teams in that 8C who are bringing most of their guys back.” With the conference realignment, the Northern C is implementing a nine-team divisional bracket this season. Each district will qualify three teams for the divisional tournament. The Southern C’s two state tournament teams from last season, Wibaux and Broadus, graduated a lot of their production, potentially leaving the door open for a new team or two. Broadview-Lavina, which won the District 6C championship last year, appears poised to assume the throne after finishing third at the divisional tournament.
