Wading Pools & Spraygrounds There are two filtrated, chlorinated wading pools and five spray grounds located within the Billings City Park System. All wading pools are intended for children 8 years and younger. Parents are responsible for the supervision of their children at all times.

AQUATICS Rose Park Pool Party Birthday Package Celebrate a birthday at Rose Park Pool during regular business hours. Package includes up to 15 all-day admissions & water slide passes, one hot dog, one 16 oz. soda, a bag of chips, and an ice cream sandwich per participant for $175! (Each additional child is $10). Up to two adult chaperones included in the entrance price. Parties are welcome to bring their own birthday cake and gifts. AQUATICS Swim Lesson Class Guide Splash into swim lessons this summer with the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Program. This course features six levels of Learn-to-Swim instruction to help swimmers of all ages and abilities to develop their swimming and water safety skills. Designed to give students a positive learning experience, American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim teaches aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. The objective is to teach participants to swim and be safe in, on, and around water. Choose the appropriate level from the descriptions below. Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills
Helps students feel comfortable in water. Enter and exit water safely. Submerge mouth, nose and eyes. Exhale underwater through mouth and nose. Open eyes underwater, pick up submerged object. Change direction while walking or paddling. Roll over from front to back and back to front with support. Explore floating on front and back with support. Explore swimming on front/back using arm/leg actions with support.
Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills
Gives students success w/fundamental skills. Enter water by stepping or jumping from the side. Exit water safely using ladder or side. Submerge entire head. Blow bubbles submerging head in a rhythmic pattern (bobbing). Open eyes underwater, pick up submerged object in shallow water. Float on front and back. Perform front and back glide. Change direction of travel paddling on front or back. Roll over from front to back, back to front. Tread water using arm and leg motions (chest-deep water). Swim on front, back, and side using combined arm and leg actions.
Level 3: Stroke Development
Builds on the skills in Level 2 through additional guided practice. Level 3 participants learn to: Jump into deep water from the side. Dive from kneeling or standing position. Submerge and retrieve an object in chest deep water. Rotary breathing in horizontal position. Perform front and back glide using two different kicks. Float on front and back in deep water. Change from horizontal to vertical position on front and back. Tread water using hand and leg movements. Perform front and back crawl & butterfly kick and body motion.
Level 4: Stroke Improvement
Develops confidence in the skills learned and improves other aquatic skills. Level 4 participants learn to: Perform a dive from a standing or stride position. Swim underwater. Perform feet-first surface dive. Perform open turns on front and back. Tread water using sculling arm motions and with different kicks. Perform Front and Back Crawl, Breaststroke, Butterfly, & Backstroke. Swim on side using scissorslike kick. Perform compact jump into water while wearing life jacket.
Level 5: Stroke Refinement
Provides further coordination and refinement of strokes. Level 5 participants learn to perform: Standing dive & Shallow dive. Tuck surface dive & Pike surface dive. Front flip turn & Backstroke flip turn. Front and Back crawl. Butterfly, Breaststroke, Elementary backstroke, & Sidestroke. Tread water with two different kicks & learn survival swimming
Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency
Refines the strokes so students swim with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Level 6 is designed with “menu� options that each focus on preparing students to participate in more advanced courses, including the Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Training courses. Tailored Swim Lessons Feeling a little timid about swim lessons? The Parks and Recreation Department is offering an opportunity for one-on-one swim instruction. These custom-tailored lessons are designed to meet the individual needs of the student, allowing the student to progress at their own unique pace. Lessons are offered to beginner through advanced students. All lessons are instructed by American Red Cross Certified Swim Instructors.

Guard Start: Lifeguarding Tomorrow Lifeguarding Tomorrow is a program for 12-15 year-olds that provides a foundation of aquatic knowledge, leadership, and skills for a future as an American Red Cross Lifeguard. The GuardStart curriculum contains multiple units in five categories (prevention, fitness, response, leadership, and professionalism). Participants will participate in numerous lifeguarding duties to prepare them for their future Lifeguard accomplishments. All participants must be able to swim 25 yds., tread water for 1 minute, and swim underwater at least 10 feet. AQUATICS Lifeguard Certification Class This American Red Cross lifeguarding course is designed and taught by industryleading professionals to help individuals stay safe in, on, and around the water. This classes teaches the best safety and rescue techniques, CPR, first aid, and AED administration and prepares individuals to deliver critical care when it’s needed most. Participants must be able at least 16 years or older, able to swim 300 yards, and dive 10 feet to retrieve a 10 pound object. Parks and Recreation is looking for qualified individuals to become lifeguards at city pools. A current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification is required. All applicants interested (not currently certified) must pass this class and submit an application through the City of Billings website to be considered for employment. Water Safety Instructor
The Water Safety Instructor program (WSI), is for individuals looking to improve and amplify their training to become a certified swimming lesson instructor. The course consists of 30 hours focused on teaching instructors in life saving swimming techniques. Throughout the course, you can expect to increase your presentation skills, refine your swimming strokes and leadership skills. The Billings Parks and Recreation Department has made it a priority to have all swim lesson instructors complete the WSI course prior to teaching swim lessons. Returning staff can call the main office at 657-8371 for more information.

PADI Open Water/Scuba Class The Billings Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with Adventure Scuba, is offering the PADI Open Water Diver Course. This course is the first step towards becoming a certified scuba diver. As a PADI Open Water Diver, you’ll explore the underwater realm, see new creatures and experience your world from an entirely new perspective. Cardio Water Exercise Back again this summer is one of our favorite outdoor, water-based fitness classes. Cardio Water exercise is a fun workout that will help you tone up and burn extra calories with the gentle resistance of water. Flotation noodles and foam dumbbells will be used and the workout can be modified to your desired level. It’s a safe, fun, and effective water class for all fitness levels!

AQUATICS Dog Days of Summer Billings Parks and Recreation is holding its annual Dog Days of Summer at Rose Park Pool! Adult companions are required to supervise their dogs, but will not be charged an entrance fee. Water friendly toys and life jackets are allowed and lifeguards will be on duty. Pet owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dogs on the pool deck and lawn. Owners are not allowed in the pool for safety concerns. All dogs must be up to date with current rabies shots and vaccinations.

OUTDOOR RECREATION Summer Climbing Classes

Bring out your inner adrenaline junkie and test yourself on the faces of the Rimrocks surrounding Billings. If you’ve ever been interested in rock climbing, our expert instructor will lead the way. Jim Rott from STEEPWORLD Climbing & Fitness will be teaching a variety of weekday and weekend class times throughout the summer, providing ample opportunity to jump in to one or more of these classes. Designed to cover all the skills required to set up basic roped climbing, these classes will take place in the established climbing areas above Gregory Hills. The class is for 13 years and older with parent child participation encouraged. We will be offering two class types. Single day class focused on getting you on the wall and a two day class which will dive deeper into the basics of rock climbing. Two day classes will meet on the first day at STEEPWORLD Climbing & Fitness. The second day of class will be held on the Rims. Single day classes will meet at the Park easement in Rockwood Circle. Shoe and AM Single Session Class waist sizes will be needed prior to the class to ensure required equipment fits properly. Youth Mountain Bike Instruction Billings Parks and Recreation will be providing a safe learning environment for youth interested in starting to navigate the sport of mountain bike riding. OUTDOOR RECREATION Learn To Kayak This summer, we have teamed up with Sunshine Sports to help you learn the basics of Kayaking. Professional Instructors will use the latest ACA teaching methods designed for beginners who wish to develop better paddling skills in a controlled environment. Kayaks, skirts, and paddles are supplied, but it is recommended that you bring a snorkeling mask or nose plugs. Aqua or kayaking shoes may be helpful as the kayak foot brace may be uncomfortable to bare feet. OUTDOOR RECREATION Family/Group Whitewater Rafting Billings Parks and Recreation invites you, your family/friends, or small group to come on a white water rafting adventure with us! Absarokee River Adventures out of Absarokee, MT will guide groups of 5-8 on a raft down the Stillwater. If you register as an individual in a group, you will be able to have a group raft reservation. Transportation is provided by Billings Parks and Recreation for the entire trip. Our office will also handle raft reservations. Please pack sunscreen, swim suit, towel, water shoes, water and a sack lunch. Scorpion Lacrosse Camp This summer camp is the perfect opportunity to learn how to play the “fastest game on two feet”! YOUTH SPORTS Youth Tennis Instruction The 2018 Billings Parks and Recreation Summer Tennis Program kicks off June 4th with a summer of tennis learning and fun . Once again, the program’s goal is to provide tennis activities for all ages and ability levels. Novice and Intermediate Youth will include lesson groups, fundamental training, and game play. Each group, determined by age, is conducted over 4 weeks in a session. All lessons follow the United States Tennis Association (USTA) 10 & Under Tennis and USTA’s Net Generation guidelines. In order to ensure proper racquet control and skill development, young players should select racquets that are proportional to their size. For 8 & under, racquets should be 19-23 inches and for 10 & Under, racquets should be 23-25 inches. There will be two instructors per session. All lessons are coordinated by USPTA certified instructors and taught by Net Generation Certified coaches. Students will learn basic blocks, strikes and kicks, along with ideas for awareness and safety. SPECIAL INTEREST Tippet Rise Art Center Tour Tippet Rise Art Center is located in Fishtail, Montana, against the backdrop of the Beartooth Mountains. Set on a 10,260-acre working sheep and cattle ranch, Tippet Rise hosts classical chamber music and exhibits large-scale, outdoor sculptures. Tippet Rise celebrates the concept that art, music, architecture, and nature are inextricably linked in the human experience, each making the others more powerful. Register to be bused out to the art center, where a trained Tippet Rise Tour Guide will take over. The tour includes some walking, but accommodations are available. Join us as we take a day long guided tour to Miles City with the following activities: Visiting the famous Range Riders museum, dining at Miles City’s downtown local bakery, the Main Street Grind, and viewing the exhibits at the Waterworks Art Museum. Register to be bused out to the museums where tour guides will take over. This tour will include some walking, but accommodations are available. YOUTH CAMPS Adventure Camp Adventure Camp is an all-day, active and adventurous camp designed for 9 - 13 year olds with engaging activities to ensure they are moving, exploring, and developing throughout each day. Each week campers will participate in activities based around the featured theme. Our Camp counselors are American Red Cross CPR/First Aid Certified and will follow established camp/bus rules to ensure safety at all times. We strive to maintain a 8 to 1 participant to counselor ratio at all times for camp. Any changes due to weather, or other unforeseen circumstances, will be communicated as soon as possible to participants. Required EACH DAY at camp: sack lunch, snacks, water, sunscreen, bug spray, towel, swimsuit, comfortable walking shoes, water shoes and a change of clothes. Personal items and electronics are discouraged at camp. Any allergies to food, sun screen, bug spray, etc. should be communicated to camp staff. Adventure Camp Themes Wild West Time Travelers Take a trip back in time and explore the Wild West and learn the skills that the early cowboys, pioneers, and mountain men mastered. Camp will focus on the early inhabitants and settlers of Yellowstone Valley and the surrounding areas. Activities include: visiting historical sites and tours, hiking, climbing, and canoeing. Survivor Challenge A unique experience that tests camper’s endurance, attitude, team spirit, wilderness knowledge and resourcefulness. By focusing on teamwork and building unity among ALL campers, everyone is sure to enjoy this thrilling camp. Activities include: small team challenges, historical landmark tours and hiking! Ultimate Outdoor Adventure This mega adventure exposes campers to the thrilling outdoors. If your girl has energy and a quest for adventure, this camp is perfect for her! After making Tohkon warrior headbands and clan flags, these girls will discover their inner courage by overcoming a rock wall and surviving several clan challenges. Every Ninja needs to know how to quickly escape any situation. Therefore, we will swim, paddle, and climb our way through obstacle courses and activities specifically designed to help girls hone their Ninja Skills. Activities will be coordinated in conjunction with the Girls Scouts of Montana and Wyoming. Registration in this camp includes a 1 year Girl Scouts membership. If you are already a member of the girl scouts, please register at the Parks & Recreation office for a discounted rate. Our Camp counselors are American Red Cross CPR/First Aid Certified and will follow established camp/bus rules to ensure safety at all times. We strive to maintain an 8 to 1 participant to counselor ratio at all times for camp. Any changes in schedule due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances will be communicated as soon as possible to participants. Required EACH DAY at camp: sack lunch, snacks, water, sun screen, bug spray, towel, swimsuit, comfortable walking shoes, water shoes and a change of clothes. MUSIC CAMP Rock Band Camp

Are you ready to “Rock Out” this summer!? Billings Parks and Recreation is offering its first ever Rock Band Camp. No musical experience required. This camp is designed to give students the full Rock Band experience by creating and learning about rock music. Students will participate and perform in both big band and small group ensembles. This camp is directed by certified music teachers. Students are encouraged to bring their own instruments, but not required. Instruments will be available on site, but are limited per section. Students will have the opportunity to try all different sections within a rock band. Outside the rehearsal studio music activities will also be included on certain days of camp. Required DAILY at camp: Instrument and Electrical Components (If bringing own Instrument) sack lunch, snacks, water, sunscreen, Personal items and electronics are discouraged at camp. Any allergies to food, sun screen, bug spray, etc. should be communicated to camp staff. We would like to keep our camp “nut-free” as the potential for an allergic reaction may be increased due to the sharing of equipment, art supplies, and other items, as well as reducing the possibility in which food residue is transferred from one participant to the other. Entering its 4th season this fall, we offer 6 practice locations for participants to choose from. Registration includes a NFL replica jersey and flag belt. COMMUNITY INFO Community Gardens It’s never too early to start thinking about your garden. The Billings Parks and Recreation Department has a variety of ways to get involved, including two community gardens and a container garden check-out program. Not an experienced Gardener? We provide classes, workshops, and mentors to make sure all skill levels are successful. The garden is a great place to get involved in your community, spend time with family, and make new friends! There are a variety of plot sizes available from 3’x6’ to 20’x20’. The container garden checkout program is great for those who can’t commit to being a part of a community garden but still want to grow those veggies. We will begin accepting new applications for the 2018 growing season after March 20th. Applications are available in our office or on our website at BillingsParks.org.

Volunteer Park Ranger Come be a part of a team of Park Rangers who are passionate about the City’s Parks and Trails. Rangers work as hosts for the parks, welcoming visitors and serving as an extra set of “eyes and ears” for the Parks and Recreation Department. Volunteers are asked to commit to weekly visits at assigned parks or trails for one season. Rangers will participate in an orientation and training prior to beginning their assignment. Information about the program and applications can be found on our website under the outreach tab, or by contacting the Volunteer Coordinator, Chris Waite (contact info below). Do you like to walk or ride the trails in Billings? The Volunteer Bike Patrol and Park Ranger Programs are looking for you to help patrol the trails and parks around the city. Come be a part of this team of committed volunteers that keep the public spaces safer and more enjoyable for the community. Patrols are scheduled at a time that is convenient for you. Volunteers commit to patrolling their designated area once a week. COMMUNITY INFO Arbor Day Come join us for the award winning celebration of Arbor Day at Optimist Park on Thursday, May 3rd. Volunteer projects related to tree planting and care, as well as park improvements will take place throughout the morning. Additionally, the park will be filled with over 500 elementary students from local 4th grade classes to learn about environment related issues from local professionals. Volunteers are needed to assist with the education stations as well as work projects. All volunteers will receive an official t-shirt and lunch. The public is invited to attend the Official Arbor Day Ceremony at 12:15pm. If you have a group that would like to participate, or you would like to be an education booth presenter, please contact the Chris Waite, Volunteer Coordinator, directly (406-657-8308).

Senior Sports & Art Week May 14th - 19th 2018 Save the date for a week of senior fun! This community event features activities, crafts, and games for anyone 55 years and older. Events will be held at different locations across Billings and each day will feature a variety of different events. Registration is $8 per person and will begin April 10th. Registration forms will be available at the Billings Community and Senior Center and the Adult Resource Alliance of Yellowstone County. Kick off is May 14th from 8:00-9:30 am with a breakfast and a walk of the Rimrock Mall to follow.

COMMUNITY INFO Fishing Jamboree The 20th Annual Youth Fishing Jamboree will provide fishing safety and instruction from Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, assisted by volunteer leaders from Montana Pike Masters, Walleyes Unlimited and Magic City Fly Fishers. Youth ages 12-14, must have an $8 conservation license. A fun and rewarding experience is promised to all participants which includes fishing instruction, canoeing, prizes and a picnic. The jamboree will be limited to the first 125 to register. A parent, grandparent or guardian must accompany each youth fisherman. Check Billings Kiwanis Facebook page for date and time.
Bike Rodeo Come join Billings Kiwanis Club for the 20th annual Bike Rodeo! This event is free and will take place on Saturday, May 19th at Pioneer Park from 10am - 11:30am. This event will give bikes to youth in Kindergarten through 4th grade. Volunteers will be available to perform minor repairs on bicycles for kids of all ages (tuneups, fix flat tires, adjust loose chains, adjust seat height, etc.). Donated bikes that have been serviced by volunteers are available on a first-come basis when kids bring a bike deemed beyond repair. Volunteers will also provide bike helmets, obstacle courses, safety instruction and refreshments. The Billings Kiwanis Club is seeking donated youth bicycles from the Billings area that need little or no repair. The bikes will be cleaned-up, repaired and given to families in need.

RENTALS Shelters Billings Parks and Recreation has some great shelters located throughout the city that are a perfect place to host a family reunion, company picnic, birthday party or get together! All picnic shelters are available on a first-come, first-serve basis unless they are reserved through a paid rental. Rental reservations for shelters must be paid for at the time of reservation. You can reserve your shelter online at BillingsParks.org or at the Parks and Recreation Offices. Some shelter rentals are available for a Full Day rental from 8:00am - 10:00pm, while other more popular shelters are available for a Half Day rental from 8:00am - 2:00pm or 3:00pm - 10:00pm.

Central Park Multi-Purpose Building
Billings Parks & Recreation has three Indoor/Outdoor Park Buildings located at Optimist Parks, Central and Highland. The indoor portion of these buildings have a food prep area, serving counter space, electrical outlets, a small utility sink, and room for seating. The outdoor covered portion has picnic tables and provides shade for you and your guests. The buildings are adjacent to playgrounds and/or spray grounds and restrooms. These facilities require a rental agreement and a $100 refundable damage deposit. RENTALS North Park The North Park Center is located at 6th Ave. N. and North 19th Street. The center has approximately 5,600 sq. ft. all on one level. This includes a small gym and kitchen area complete with stove, refrigerator, and sink. The center also Rental Rates: features a multi-purpose room and restrooms. Zimmerman Center Located at 1801 Virginia Lane in Pioneer Park. The building includes a food prep area, restrooms, and a multi-purpose room. This building is ideal for groups of 50 or less for meetings or social events. This heated Rental Rates: facility is available for the public to rent from 8am - 10pm. Hourly $30 A $100 refundable Cleaning and Key deposit is requred. 1/2 Day $100 (6 Hours or less) Full Day $200 (8am - 10pm)

Alcohol Permits If you plan on having alcohol at your event you must purchase an Alcohol Permit from the Parks and Recreation Department Office. This is for beer and wine only (no glass containers). Permits may be obtained in person at the Parks & Recreation office. Alcohol permits cost $75 and are non-refundable & non-transferable. (No permits are issued for Coulson, Swords or Riverfront Parks) Park Use Permits A Park Use Permit is required for any event that is open to the general public and is available for requests to reserve a specific park area for weddings, company picnics or family reunions. Events open to the public include youth sports leagues, concerts, fun runs, and special group events. A $100 processing fee is charged on a per park basis for general permits and is non-refundable. Permits for athletic usage are per field/season and rates vary according to usage. Events open to the public require liability insurance that meets the mandatory guidelines contained in the application. You can pick up a permit application at the Parks and Recreation Department located at 390 North 23rd Street. PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIPS Youth Scholarship Program The Billings Parks & Recreation Scholarship Fund provides youth in our community access to recreational programs whose families may be experiencing economic hardships. These scholarships provide eligible families exposure to positive experiences and active lifestyles. Through our programs, children are provided the opportunity to gain and refine life skills, and to develop positive personal and social assets. We need your help to provide recreation opportunities to children who would not otherwise have the opportunity! Your donation will help to provide an enrichment activity, class or program that will help a child build essential characteristics that are needed to succeed in life. 100% of the donations to this fund go directly to support scholarships for Billings’ youth. To apply for a scholarship, please stop by the Parks & Recreation office to pick up a scholarship application. Senior Scholarship Program Billings Parks and Recreation is dedicated to lifelong recreation no matter your economic status. Seniors, age 55+, may be eligible for our Senior Scholarship Program. The program is intended to help seniors with a limited income participate in fitness and recreation programs. The fund is functioning primarily off donations from our generous community members. 100% of donations to this fund will go towards directly supporting Seniors. DEADLINES: Various programs may list activity deadlines for registration. Generally the deadline for registration is one week prior to the start of the activity, or session when there are multiple sessions being offered. This enables us to produce and distribute participant rosters to instructors as well as combine low enrollment classes rather than cancel them. ACTIVITY TRANSFER Requests to transfer to a different program activity once registered must be made at least five business days prior to the scheduled starting date. Transfers will be done when possible depending upon enrollment availability.

NON-RESIDENT POLICIES For people who do not reside within the city limits there will be a non-resident fee of $10 per activity charged in addition to the regular program fee. This fee is non-refundable, except in the case of a cancelled or filled class which prohibits participation in a program. SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS Applications are available for low income families to apply for reduced fees for specific summer recreation programs. Applicants must be city residents and can receive up to a 75% discount if qualified. Reduced children’s pool passes are also available. Pick up an application in person at the Parks and Recreation Office to apply.
