VOLUMETRIC URBANISM PROJECT TYPE YEAR SITE PARTICIPANT

Future Urban City 2012-13 (MArch 2 Final Year Project) Shenzhen Bill Or

DESCRIPTION Up to today many tools for urban planning have been proposed, as we can analyze the cities by different aspects such as social, density, economic, sustainability, etc. In this project, the urban connection is the main aspect that will be analyze in the research part. Accordingly, cities and regions are planned from two-dimensional point of view. However, with the rise of the global population and technological developments, three-dimensional planning methods will increasingly invading urban developments in the future. Therefore, this thesis takes an evolutionary standpoint to ‘read urban structure from a urban connectivity standpoint and studying volumetric urban spatial planning as a new urban typology for future city expansion.’ A key aspect in this perspective lies in how to interpret the concept of urban connectivity for three-dimensional urban planning. What is meant by urban connectivity at the level of urban planning, and how is it used for the purpose of inventing and planning volumetric city. How can we translate the concept of urban connectivity from two-dimension into three-dimension? How to perform the translation to computer applications dealing with the problem of three-dimension planning? After various studies of the urban structure, it takes an experimental way to examine the possibility of new urban typologies for a volumetric urbanism in the future development. The integrated multi-dimensions connected network and elevated urban experience are the essential elements which presented in this volumetric urban model.

HYBRIDSED DENSITY RESIDENTIAL PLAN

PROJECT TYPE YEAR A) SITE PARTICIPANT

Vertical Village 2011 (MArch 1 Sem Sin Village, Guangzhou Bill Or

DESCRIPTION In the urbanized Guangzhou, the site “SIN Village” is being isolated and aware the problems of urban living such as lack of communication and interaction between neighborhoods. Therefore, the design objective is to break down that isolation and connect the citizen with the village. In order to connect the people who have different living styles and desires of different flat layout, the design is trying to mix the different building density virtically by adopting the Bottom-Up planning through the study of different residential planning.

CHLOROPLAST PROJECT TYPE YEAR SITE PARTICIPANT

Greenhouse Complex 2010 (Year 4 Sem B) Tseung Kwan O, Hong Kong Bill Or

DESCRIPTION Continuous with the previous Eco-village project, I have choosen an area in the landfill site and developed an Eco-Center. This project has to select a natural element to study and transform it into architecture. I select the CHLOROPLAST in my design because it is a green icon in the nature and it conducts photosynthesis which is important for an eco-system. This design has analysed from macro to micro scale and found out some special characteristics such as FOLDING, IN-BETWEEN, FLOATING, etc. which will applyed in the design.

SECTION ACADEMIC | COMPETITION | PROFESSIONAL

01 PROGRAMME There are many Thylakoids floating inside the chloroplast which contain different programmes to precede photosynthesis. In the design, the programmes are freely floating above the forest. It allows user to experience the forest in different levels with minimal inference.

01

02 SPACE To represent the Thylakoids, the space in the design is also generated by a continuous surface when it folds a volume between. The folding is controlled by different spatial functions. e.g. a dynamic space for exhibition, and a sloping floor for lecture room.

03 CIRCULATION Lamellae are a different element that uses to transport the chemistry compounds between Thylakoids. In the design, the circulation system is detached from the buildings body. It directly link up the space and allow people experiencing the space in-between the forest and buildings.

04 STRUCTURE 02

To fully express the floating and folding space, the special horizontal structure system is composed by many beams whose support by two structure walls. It frees up the ground for the forest without any building’s footprints.

LIVE OF SOHO PROJECT TYPE YEAR SITE PARTICIPANT

Shopping Arcade 2009 (Year 3 Sem B) Central Mid-levels , Hong Kong Bill Or

DESCRIPTION The project is to design a shopping arcade which should be different with today’s “big podium shopping mall” and more respond to the site context. The exiting site has a public open space and buildings surround it, but that open space is ignored by people and mainly occupied by cats. Therefore, the design concept is to activate the site by re-programming the buildings and open space. Also reconnect the existing occupants with each other and with the site.

LOW MOBILITY OF CATS

Existing open space surrounded by buildings and cats are hidden between the buildings.

HIGH MOBILITY OF CATS TO ATTRACT PEOPLE

Divide existing buildings into smaller massing and overlapped to create more hidden space for cats. Also the open space was split and insert into the building mass. ACADEMIC | COMPETITION | PROFESSIONAL

PROGRAMME

SITE CONTEXT

A set of programmes are specially designed for different lives and there will be some cross programmes serve them together. Those programmes provides a harmonious activities for them and increase the interaction between them. The central programme of the project is a cat adoption centre rather than the retail which is tried to respond the site context.

The sketch diagrams are showing the different existing elements in the site such as trees, buildings, topography and roads. Some of the diagram such as 1 will future develops to 1+ and some of them will combine with other diagrams such as 1+ + 3. Those diagrams are presenting the site context which the design will respond to.

STUDY MODELS (MASSING) After shaking of the programmes, it create some overlapping areas to become a semi-open space which provide a gathering space for the lives. Also, it generates many hidden space for cats to store and play.

BUDDHISM MUSEUM PROJECT TYPE YEAR SITE PARTICIPANT

Museum 2009 (Year 3 Sem A) Kowloon Tong , Hong Kong Bill Or

DESCRIPTION The project is to design a museum through the study of one religions and I choose Buddhism which is the oldest and popular religion in Chinese. In Buddhism theory, it always mentions “Emptiness” and “Silence” which people can feel through experiencing the nature. After study some Buddhism architecture, I was impressed by the Logmen Cave which integrate the nature stone mountain with architecture to place Buddha. The design tries to create such kind of atmosphere and space by merging the museum with the nature. All the buildings are hided under the landscape designed with mountain shape and people can communicate and meditate with the nature through experiencing the topography.

“CITYSCAPE” VS “MOUNTAINSCAPE” The design is composed by two types of landscape, the upper landscape is generated by the mountain skyline which represents the nature, and the lower landscape is generated from the building skyline which represents the human artifact. In the theory of Buddhism, layman is suffering in the varicolored world and they should be detached from it by purifying themselves in the nature to attain the nirvana. The design is representing this relationship by overlapping these two landscapes to create exhibition space between the landscape and purifying space on the upper landscape.

WEAVING NATURE DESIGN CONCEPT

PROJECT TYPE ORGANIZATION YEAR SITE PARTICIPANT

Bridge [AC-CA] Architectural Competition Concours d’Architecture 2013 Tai O, Hong Kong Bill Or, Anita Au, Alex Ng, Vanissa Ou-Yang

DESCRIPTION The bridge is an extension of the local natural landscape and it interweaves with the sinusoidal waves of water. To interweave the bridge with the nature, the bridge is divided into two thinner passages with differential sinusoid from both ends. Also, this weaving idea is extended to the structure of the passage, constructing the flooring by the woven pattern of nylon fishing net.

By cutting the middle of the stripe, two stripes are formed based on two different functions which are pedestrian and emergency vehicular.

Pedestrian stripe scrolls up and down on Y-axis to provide divergent experience. The other stripe for vehicular access is a gentle slope to facilitate the practical constrains.

Pedestrian interweaves with the vehicular pathway enhance the people interaction.

Different pattern of nylon fishing net defines static and dynamic activities. Some parts are drooped signifies greater variation of activities.
