2011-12 Rochester Wrestling previews CENTURY

Head coach: Steve Larsen, 10th season. Assistants: Scott Hayungs, James Coyle, Ken Beich, Tyler Lindhart and Shawn Pastika. Last season: 3-14 overall, 2-7 in Big Nine. Who’s gone: Chad Zastrow, Sam Gaul, Joe Ginther, Mitch Miller, Clint Allen and Jake Allen. Top returners: None listed. Other returning letter-winners: Tanner Hall (3-14), Zach Larson (2-24), Daniel Lopez (1-9), Alan Martinson (2-8), Justin Morbeck (4-20) and Wilson Yang (2-12). Team strengths: Numbers, strong youth program. Team weaknesses: Lost top six wrestlers, very inexperienced, no winning records returning. Where they fit in Big Nine race: Bottom half of conference. Coach Larsen’s thoughts: “The bad news for our program is that we lost the best six wrestlers from our team last season. The good news is that our program is growing. We have just three seniors and three juniors in our program at this time, but we do have 31 wrestlers who are sophomores, freshmen or underclassmen. These numbers, along with the current status of our youth program, gives us reason to be optimistic about the future. ... This year we realize that we are very inexperienced at the varsity level. Our goal is to make progress one day at a time over the course of the season. There could be some pleasant surprises before the season is over. While it will be tough to face Owatonna next Thursday to open the season, I believe that this experience will give the wrestlers in our program some team goals for the future.” ROSTER Seniors — Daniel Lopez, Will Mahora and Justin Morbeck. Juniors — Zach Larson, Kyle Pike and Wilson Yang. Sophomores — Adam Douangmala, Donyae Funches, Andrew Liu, Chris Lopez, Nick Pastika, Stephen Pho, Antonnio Scaccio and Luke Wilson. Freshmen — Jonny Brushaber, Victor Lechner, Nick O’Brien, Khristian Pike and Gunnar Simonson. Eighth-graders — Elijah Clark, Michael Gaul, Tanner Hall, Levi Hansen, Alan Martinson, Edgar Saenz, Micahel Page 1 of 7

2011-12 Rochester Wrestling previews Feb. 16-18 — at Section 1AAA team tournament, TBD. Feb. 24-25 — at Section 1AAA individual tournament, TBD. JOHN MARSHALL Head coach: Brian Parlin, fifth season. Assistants: Kent Kaupa, Troy Steffes and Tom Giordano. Last season: 14-10 overall, 4-4 in Big Nine. Who’s gone: Charlie Stellpflug and Jacob Bosshart. Top returners: Ryan Williamson (fifth-year varsity starter, 25-9 before injury last season); other 20-match winners include Logan Saltou, Carter Williamson, Nick Borth, Nathan Evan and Makayle Brennan. Senior Austin Minea and junior Tim Moore also return. Other returning letter-winners: Dami Adebayo, Alex Brown, Dontorrie Chatman, Hayden Herzog, Jorge Loyo Lopez, Tim Vanderwiel, Ryan Just, Andrew Moore, Jay Wehrenberg and Kenny Maclin. Team strengths: Returning varsity experience, offseason commitment. Team weaknesses: Depth, lost a few experienced wrestlers. Where they fit in Big Nine race: Top half of conference; hoping to compete for No. 3 spot. Coach Parlin’s thoughts: “We have a lot of kids returning with varsity experience. We are returning four wrestlers who placed third in sections last year, and a total of 10 wrestlers who have placed in the section. That gives us a good core of kids. We had some kids put in a lot of work in the offseason to prepare for this year. If everything comes together, I expect us to win a lot of duals and be competitive with everyone we wrestle. ... Ryan Williamson will help lead our team this year. He’s a fifth-year varsity starter and is one of our senior captains. He was unable to compete at sections last year due to an injury, but he compiled a 25-9 record before he got hurt.” ROSTER Page 3 of 7

2011-12 Rochester Wrestling previews Where they fit in Big Nine race: Hoping to compete for No. 3 spot behind Owatonna and Albert Lea. Coach Trimble’s thoughts: “We have a very strong group of wrestlers in the middle and upper weights, which should match up well when competing with other schools. We also have a lot of varsity experience returning from last year. ... We don’t have the depth in the lower weights that we do in our upper weights, which could hurt us if we experience a few injuries. I am predicting a strong year for the Spartans. We should be competitive in all the conference matchups. I look for a lot of wrestlers to make the next step this year and compete for individual section championships.” ROSTER Seniors — Justin Carr and Jose Contreres Paredes.
