All-City wrestling crown stays with Rockets By Ben Pherson The Post-Bulletin, Rochester MN Slide show: All-City wrestling Rochester John Marshall senior Ryan Williamson provided an excellent learning opportunity for a Rockets wrestling roster loaded with underclassman. That lesson — always, always wrestle through the edge of the mat. Williamson, who has a 26-4 record this season, bumped up a weight class to 195 pounds Thursday night during the All-City Championship at Mayo High School. Williamson fell behind Mayo's Justin Carr (21-8), but he didn't give up. After a wild scramble at the edge of the mat, Williamson caught Carr, didn't let him get off the mat and secured a crucial pinfall that helped lead John Marshall to a 39-35 victory and its third consecutive All-City title. "Ryan is one of our vets, and he's been around forever," JM coach Brian Parlin said. "He knows where he's at on the mat at all times. He kept Carr on the mat, didn't let him get his arm through and kept him on his back. It's definitely a good thing for the young kids to watch." Up until the 195 match, most of the dual had gone about as expected. The Rockets and Spartans went back and forth, exchanging leads until the Rockets pulled away with back-to-back pins from Alex Brown and Williamson. "Alex Brown is a kid who did his time on JV, and he stepped up huge for us," Parlin said. "We really needed just about everything to go our way, and we got it done." The Rockets and Spartans met during the Rochester Invitational on Dec. 3, with Mayo rolling to a 46-25 victory. Still, the turnaround wasn't completely unexpected.

All-City wrestling crown stays with Rockets "No, we knew this time around it was going to be very close," Mayo coach Art Trimble said. "There were a couple of close matches we needed to get there, and we definitely couldn't be giving up those bonus points. The guys are really disappointed; they wanted this one. But it will give us motivation for the section tournament." JM's All-City title is its fifth in the past six seasons. The win also throws a wrench into the Section One, Class AAA seeding. The Spartans and Rockets each hold wins over each other. JM defeated Faribault, but lost to Northfield, which defeated Faribault. "It's a bit of a mess now, but I'd say there's still a good chance us and Mayo will be the 4 and 5 seeds, so we could meet again," Parlin said. "But who knows. I guess we'll find out in a few weeks."
Logan Saltou gave the Rockets an early 6-0 lead withhis pin at 106, but the Spartans came right back with Miles Patton's pin at 133. Mayo took its first lead after Denley Minske received a pin at 120. The dual was tied at 12-all after 126 when JM's Carter Williamson recorded a pin in just :50 From 126 to 152, the teams traded victories. Mayo pulled back in front with Brady Nelson's major decision at 132, but JM went up 18-16 with Nate Evan's pin at 138. The Spartans took their final lead of the night when Jake Hanson claimed a 6-2 win over Nick Borth at 145. Both wrestlers bumped up a weight to clash. Tim Moore and Timmy Vanderwiel put together back-to-back wins for the Rockets. Sam Hinsch ended the run with a major decision for the Spartans at 170. But Brown and Williamson delivered pins at 182 and 195 to help the Rockets clinch the title.

All-City wrestling crown stays with Rockets "I think when we lost to Mayo early in the season, I said it was a good loss; it's what we needed to motivate us," Parlin said. "We've had duals like this all season; we're battled tested. So we were ready for a tight dual like this. We came out and everyone wrestled hard. Everyone did their part." The Rockets and Spartans both rolled over Century in the opening two duals Thursday. Mayo notched a 70-12 win over the Panthers, and JM won a 66-12 decision.
