World Tea Production Tea - is the most common drink in the world to this day. People started consuming tea around 1998 AD in China and since then, it went through multiple transformations, before it became the drink as we know it today. It is being enjoyed all over the world and each country seems to have it's favorite way of brewing tea: with spices, with milk, butter, salt, sugar, lemon, boiling, brewing, whisking. It's interesting how one single plant has created so many traditions, spreading all over the world. Interestingly enough, even though China is the main producer and also a consumer in the world, its citizens do not consume as much tea! The biggest individual tea consumers live in Turkey, brewing around 3kg of tea each year, followed by Ireland and the UK. People in China drink only around 0.5 kg of tea each year. This signifies, the fact, that tea culture doesn't belong solely to Asia, but now is a world heritage. I am glad that more and more countries are growing and producing their own tea, sharing it over the world. I was surprised to find out that Kenya has recently become one of the largest producers of tea in the world, producing 67% of tea in Africa. Recently Kenyan tea started to pop up at stores in the Middle East and Europe. Traditionally, both of these regions were drinking tea from India, Sri Lanka and Turkey. I hope we will see an even larger variety of teas in the foreseeable future.
