Takashi Sugimoto

He established Super Potato as an interior design firm in 1973. He was first involved with designs for bars, tearooms, and boutiques. During the prime time of Seibu Group, He worked with Ikko Tanaka for the environmental planning of the Seibu department stores as a design director to launch several stores domestically. Furthermore, we were involved creating the philosophy and retails for Mujirushi-youhin over 30 years. Under his direction, the main principle of their design is to aim to become the forefront of design and emphasize Japanese tradition and geographical features as a method to express their thoughts whilst maintaining their originality. One of their originality comes from the use of materials. They restructure the visual and physical attributes of materials found from demolished old Japanese architecture and tearooms – iron, timber, natural stone, and bricks – to incorporate them in their design to enhance the beauty of the space. He believes this is a new method of expressing nature. Furthermore, the importance of their design is how one feels about the natural changes surrounding us such as water, clouds, wind and light and how to express these feelings through their own design.

BE - IN

Category: Cafe & Bar A simple geometric frame set in the front of the renovated warehouse clearly marked the entrance to Be-in while playing off the strong lines of the building.

The upper level was conceived as an abstract space with surfaces layered in white paint and shapes drawn in graphite on the walls and accented with lines of small lights.

Bold geometry defined the lower level. Vertical planes of contrasting materials pulled away from the walls to frame the space and balance the horizontality of the wood tables.

The stair was designed as a single folded white plane, which appeared to float in the space. Only the edge of the stair was lighted, emphasizing its figurative quality.
