Concept Statement
Imagination is something which can be possible for a human to see beyond its limitations. There are many super natural things which is impossible to see in reality but what makes it possible is imagination. Exploring the idea of spiral galaxy, where the stars, gas and dust particles are arranged in the center, forming a bulge with spiral rings around. The idea is to imagine the shape, elements and charateristics of the spiral galaxy. The design for National Geographic headquaters is inspired by the elements, charcateristics and shape of spiral galaxy. The spiral shape which includes the curvillinear lines inspires to create a design with free curve shapes and forms. Along with the shape, the spiral galaxy also has bright illumination which inspires to choose lighting design that will brighten up the overall space. However, the main function of the spiral galaxy is to inspire, educate and explore the reality of its elements, which is similar to the function of National Geographic Headquaters that is to educate, inspire and explore about the animals and nature. The main focus of National Geographic Headquaters includes the exhibition space, where the above functions will be shown. So the images on the right indicates how these functions will be illustrated within the design process.

Bubble Diagrams
For the first floor bubble diagram, the organization of space planning has been done according to the connection between the rooms. As we enter, we will see a huge lobby which will take to the elevator and staircase. The other public areas such as retail store and cafe are placed right beside the lobby so that it is easier for people to walk in the store and cafe. The restrooms have ADA compliance and is planned near to the cafe. The reason is because it will be easier to plan the water and plumbing layout. The janitorial closet and telecom room is planned near to the elevator and electrical panel so that it will be easier to keep all the mechanical and electrical work together.

Design Approach
“Ikebana is the art of Japanese flower arrangement, can be translated as living flowers.” It can also be called as “Kado” which means way of the flower. The concept of Ikebana is derived from the Japanese culture. The name comes from the Japanese ike, meaning ‘alive’ or ‘arrange’ and bana meaning ‘flower.’ In Japan, Ikebana is seen more than just a decor, it is a spiritual process that helps one develop a closeness with nature and merge the indoors and outdoors. Almost in all the Japanese homes, Ikebana can be seen as traditional decor. The flowers used to arranged in Ikebana are Shin, Soe and Tai. There are more flowers used, which are subdivisions of Shin, Soe and Tai. The basic structure of Ikebana is a Scalene Triangle with three main points, forms with twigs, which represents humanity, heaven and earth. There are seven main principles of Ikebana that are followed by Ikebena schools. They are: Silence, Minimalism, Shape & Line, Form, Humanity, Aesthetics, and Structure. It is believed that Ikebana is created by incorporating each of the principle. During the arrangement, there is an importance of space needs to be considered, which is not meant to be filled, but created and preserved through the arrangements. Branches and flowers are placed at specific angles to represent ten (heaven), chi (earth), and jin (man). The way they’re placed represents the strength, delicacy, and ephemerality of living flowers.

Concept Statement
I have decided to choose concept, which make the elderly people remember about their ancient culture. As this project is all about giving that pleasing atmosphere to these seniors who are fond of their culture and traditions, I have choose the concept of “IKEBANA”, ‘the Japanese art of flower arranging, blossoms, branches, leaves, and stems find new life as materials for artmaking.’ This concept is giving that feel of Japanese culture. Ikebana creates balance between beauty of nature and artist’s love. It is not just about arranging flowers but it is more about the artist who arranges the flowers with emotions and feelings. It is a beautiful relationship between nature and humanity. Ikebana is colorful in nature, as it has all the beautiful colors of Shin, Soe and Tai flowers. For this project, I choose Ikebana as a design concept because it is very close to nature, very colorful, minimalistic, cultural, aesthetical, soothing, and its principles reflects elements of design such as balance, shape, form, graceful lines and minimalism. I will incorporate all of these principles in design and will select color palette from the colors of Shin, Soe and Tai flowers. As the structure of Ikebana is scalene triangle with three main points representing earth, humanity and heaven, these elements will be seen in design. This concept will create a beautiful relationship between elderly people and mother nature. Functional and aesthetical, simplistic and innovative, homely and hospitable, soothing and relaxing, modern and cultural, this concept will reflect all of these elements in design. Seniors will have their comfortable and peaceful living along with their ancient Japanese lifestyle, traditions and culture. Right Top: Ikebana inspiration image Right Bottom: Conceptual Sketches

Water Strategies Green Roof and Rainwater Harvesting - Green roof is an effective method for the building and also for the environment. Installing green roofs are effective to improve water quality by filtering the water from the pollutants within the atmosphere. Green roofs can also be used to harvest rainwater to be used for irrigation and plumbing systems. Some of the harvested rainwater can also be filtered thoroughly for potable water. Greywater and Blackwater System - Greywater is the waste water from showers, baths, spas, hand basins, laundry tubs and washing machines Water from dishwashers and kitchen sinks is often referred to as dark greywater, because it has a higher load of chemicals, fats and other organic matter. Water from toilets is called blackwater. Blackwater is the mixture of urine, feces and flush water along with toilet cleansing water and/or dry cleansing materials. Blackwater contains the pathogens of faeces and the nutrients of urine that are diluted in the flush water. Greywater can replace fresh water that is used for non-essential tasks like washing autos, spraying off driveways and irrigating status lawns. A greywater system never runs short of water and is a predictable safe water source. Reuse of it will helps preserve fresh water sources of water for present and future use. The more of fresh water you use, the more greywater you generate. Stormwater Management and Sewer Drainage System Stormwater regulation is a burden in so many location. While the stormwater runoff over land , it can pollutant and posional to the fish, fertilizer and so on. So, in our project we are collecting stormwater from storm drain and stored in the tank, reuse as the non-potable water by passing through the treatment process. In most of the case sewer ming contain 95% of water, which was wasting, so in your site we are going to collect the water from sewer with the multi-water reuse treatment plant and put the solid back to sewerage. After filtration the water, it can also be generate as non-potable water such as irrigation, flashing toilet, sprinkle test as well. Biophilic Design - Daylighting
Daylighting refers to the strategy of using most of the natural light or sun light direct into the living space. The strategy is achieved by designing a building in a way where you would get most of the lighting from the sun. In other words, it is an illumination of indoor space through natural light. Our building is south - facing and due to that we have benefit of collecting maximum daylighting inside the building. So, we have used large windows, skylights and curtain wall which are direct facing towards sun. Benefits: Reduces electricity bills Improves health benefits such physical and mental Saves energy Bring connection to nature One of the LEED requirement criteria
82 | BINAL HAMLAI
Daylighting Strategies
Main Building-window wall Daylight is one of the most element we need in the eco block design. So in this project, we will use a lot natural light to save the energy for our whole building. As you see, our building is mading by two separate area, the center of the building is the main area we work with. The height of the building is tall and it has eight levels for people to work with. The exterior of the building made by the plenty glass window, which allow the sunlight come into the building whole day in 360 degree. Because there are no other tall building near this place, so the light won’t be covered for this building by any other situations. Annex Skylight Same like main building, in the farmer part, we also use the glasses to decorate the exterior. But not same like the whole glass window work surround the whole building, the two side of the arc in the annex will covered by the plants. So, in order to have more daylight for this building, we will open the skyline in the top of the round. This place can absorb the sunlight from the sky, so for the most of time, people don’t need to worried about viewing when they walk inside the building. The skylight selection will help us save energy a lot in this case.
BINAL HAMLAI | 83
LOBBY DESIGN: Lobby is designed here in the most minimalistic and sustainable way possible. There is lots of natural lights coming inside. Lots of plants and vertical landscaping has been incorporated. The materials used here are reclaimed oak for the planks on the ceiling, sediment concrete for walls and flooring and stone on reception desk.

Project Inspiration
The phrase “Islamic art” is an umbrella term for post - 7th century visual arts, created by Muslim and non - Muslim artists within the territories occupied by the people and cultures of Islam. It embraces art forms such as architecture, painting, callligraphy, book gilding, manuscript illumination, lacquer - painted bookbinding, textile design, metalworking, goldmithery, gemstone carving, and others. Historically, Islamic art has developed from a wide variety of different sources. It includes elements from Greek and early Christian art which it combines with the great Middle Eastern cultures of Egypt, Byzantium and ancient Persia, along with far eastern cultures of India and China. Islamic style is made purely for the sake of spiritual and religious devotion and expression, rather than art that is used to express the artist’s own personal message or story. Traditionally, the artist detaches himself from any praise or recognition of his work. Islamic art also embodies and expresses the teachings of Islam, whether its through more obvious form such as calligraphy and miniature painting, or more abstract approaches through the use of geometry and arabesque. Islamic art has also been compared to a form of dhikr or a remembrance of God, which in turn is a form of worship in a much more creative manner.

Concept Statement & Sketches
Islamic Architecture and Design uses geometric shapes to create a pattern. Rotation of the patterns and shapes is a key to make a layered approach to the structure. The architecture also uses arabic alphabets in the design layered with geometric pattern, which is called as arabic calligraphy design. Several architectural features embodies geometric proportion, harmony and balance. It does not include any human imagineries or idols; this is the Islamic way of architectural expression or style that is built within conformity to God’s will. For this coffee shop project, I am going to incorporate these elements such as, geometric shapes, islamic patterns, arabic calligraphy and mosaics on wall papers, hanging lights, on furniture, in architectural and interior designing and decoration. The arches and dome shapes which represent Islamic style will incorporate in ceiling design, counter area, columns, beams, doors and windows. This entire project is made in 3Ds Max, lighting and materials are made in V- Ray and details are added in Photoshop.
