Storybook Soiree Welcome to Wonderland
Dear Friends, It is my pleasure to welcome everyone gathered for tonight’s “Storybook Soiree: Alice in Wonderland,” in celebration and support of the Binghamton Philharmonic Orchestra. As a valuable asset of the Southern Tier and Northern PA, the Binghamton Philharmonic has touched thousands of community members through orchestral programs, concerts, education initiatives and community engagement. I am proud to say that the Binghamton Philharmonic continues to improve the quality of life in our region. In our 58th Season, the Binghamton Philharmonic continues to thrive because of the support of our community. While celebrating the Philharmonic tonight, please remember that ticket sales only cover 33% of the Philharmonic’s operating costs. With a $750,000 budget, the Philharmonic needs the support of the community and people like you, to ensure that high quality programming continues in our region. Thank you for joining us in supporting the Binghamton Philharmonic this evening. Remember to bid on auction items and help the Philharmonic reach our goals. Warmest regards and best wishes for an enjoyable and memorable evening. Sincerely, Susan Burtis

The Storybook Soiree Honorary Chair 2014:
Mrs. Pokey Crocker
A post-Depression baby, Pokey was born during the Flood of 1936. Luckily for her, her father was able to get her mom to Binghamton General Hospital. The unborn child had been dubbed Pocahontas due to an ancestry that traced to Captain John Smith, and when she arrived the doctor ascertained that POKEY had arrived! Nee Margaret, Pokey has been her lifetime tag ever since! Pokey grew up on the West Side of Binghamton in an old farmhouse that sits on the corner of Riverside Drive and West End Avenue. She attended Alexander Hamilton elementary School, West Junior High and graduated from Binghamton Central High School. Pokey attended Lake Erie College for Women for two years. She married a Cincinnati boy and journeyed to his college in Gambier, Ohio. There she audited classes, joined their theater company, produced a baby girl and made many good friends. She returned to Binghamton in 1958, a widow with one child and another expected. A second girl was born and Pokey resettled into life in Binghamton. She married again and two more children rounded out the family. That was 53 years ago! Pokey graduated from SUNY Binghamton with a BA in Art History and stepped into a Masters program, graduating with a Master of Art History. Being a student was a highlight in her life. According to her, “being an old grad was even better!” Throughout school and after, Pokey enjoyed getting caught up in the community that she loves so much. She joined the Junior League and volunteered at the Roberson Center. There she became a board members and was hired as the Volunteer Coordinator. After that she entered the education department and stayed there for 18 years! In 1986 she left Roberson to become the Executive Director of the Tioga County Council on the Arts. Then in January, 1989, she received a call from the president of The Discovery Center Board of Directors to let her know that the Director of the museum was leaving in 20 minutes and that she needed to come back to Binghamton and answer her call of duty to the Junior League. Pokey was happy in Owego but agreed to give the board an hour of her time. The vision to her was overwhelming and the rest is history! In her private live, Pokey has four children, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. They are the lights of her life. She loves the comings and goings in Binghamton and has been blessed with what the community has given to her and her family. Pokey says she has wonderful friends, a cozy house, and an old fishing camp built by her grandfather in 1919 on a lake in Canada. This is her favorite getaway. She loves to garden, raise vegetables, paint, visit family, peruse museums, travel, read, write and go to work! This year Pokey celebrates 25 years as the Executive Director of The Discovery Center. Pokey states, “What a ride I have had and how lucky I am to have a staff that is unparalleled in intelligence, creativity and loyalty. I am also lucky to have a marvelous, supportive, understanding husband who knows what I am all about…and encourages it! My children have been my best fan club, and their children have given me a thousand ideas to integrate into our philosophy of ‘play and learn by doing.’ It has been good and certainly my life has been blessed, and I am thankful.”
