letter from the editor:

Thanks for dropping by our little magazine… It is hard to believe that this is our 7th issue of Binky…we have come a long way from Issue 01. Binky started as a creative outlet to photograph children at our sister photography studio in Toronto; Modern Baby. It has now turned into a showcase of photographers from around the world bringing their own unique perspectives to editorial photography and children’s fashion. I hope you enjoy the diversity of this issue which is thanks to the inspiration of some incredibly talented photographers. In addition to the work you have come to know from Modern Baby, we have the edgy industrial style of Jade Warne photographing the beautiful winner of our Model Search, Estella Nolan and her siblings in Sydney Australia wearing exclusively NUNUNU clothing. Contrast this to the ethereal and soft style of Jantine Muilwijk photographing little beauties in the Netherlands featuring the local Mio & Co brand. We also have the edgy punk aesthetic of Mark Binks and the more pop inspired Raina + Wilson photoshoots here in Toronto styled by our very own Fashion Director Georgia Groom. We have found this diversity in children’s fashion incredibly inspiring for the change of season and we hope you enjoy it as well. And not to forget the mothers out there who make all of this happen, we have some wonderful articles about how to be the best you with your very very limited time. We hope to help you to fit in your work-outs and beauty regimes in the in-between time which we call our own. Finally, some tips on how to help your wee ones transition into the world of reading. Thank you again for stopping by and all the best to your families this Spring.

By Trisha Enriquez @notummymommy

As mothers we don't have a lot of time and often the idea of exercise falls very low on the priority list. We're busy, we're tired and with the downtime we do have, it's hard to think we would throw on workout gear and get a sweat on. So what are the top three moves you can do to make the most of your free mommy time?

42

binky | fitness

Squat, Breathe, Repeat The squat is a compound movement that not only works to lifting your barely-there derriere, but also hits other parts of your body including your quads and core. The squat is THE #1 move and can be done at home without any weights. Squat, breathe and repeat.

A Plank A Day Keeps The Tummy At Bay The plank is a traditional move that works your entire body. Don't focus on the length of time you can hold your plank, but rather perfect your form. Keep your back straight without lifting your butt in the air and without allowing your hips to sag. You can also try variations of the traditional plank to keep challenging yourself.

Burpee Now and Cry Later Doing a few burpees could easily feel like a full-blown cardio workout. This move works almost every muscle in your body and it never fails to make you sweat. Modify the move to lessen or increase its difficulty, but no matter what, burpees are quite the workout that'll have you sleeping like a baby at night ... unless you have a newborn who's up and ready to feed every few hours (yikes!). Listen, no one every said burpees are fun, but they sure do work‌ Burpee now and cry later, mama!

Make Up Artist Robert Weir @robertweir1 & Photographer Michael Kai Young @michaelkaiyoung

Lets face it, we are often lucky to even find 10 minutes to pull ourselves together before we face the world. Rober Weir has come to the rescue with a step-by-step guide on getting out the door looking our best in no time.

Step 1: Skin Even out your skin with a light weight foundation. Go over areas that require more coverage with a pen concealer. Pay special attention to under the eyes around the nose and t-zone. Try Charlotte Tilbury Mini Miracle Eye Pen and Light Wonder Foundation.

Step 2: Eyes Apply a mid tone eyeshadow all over the lid and crease. Use the same colour with a small brush to line under the eye. Apply a coat of mascara on curled eyelashes. Get the mascara to the base of the lashes for a voluminous look. Try Charlotte Tilbury Vintage Vamp Eye Kit.

66

binky | mummy

Step 3: Cheeks Use bronzer under the cheek bones to define your bone structure. Then, add deeper blush colours to the cheek bone. Finally add a bright colour to the apple of the cheek. Try Charlotte Tilbury Film Star Killer Cheek Bones and Cheek to Cheek Love Glow.

Step 4: Lips Line your lips with a neutral pencil. Finish with a soft lipstick for day or a dramatic colour for evening. Try Charlotte Tilbury the Perfect Nude Kiss or The Perfect Vamp Kiss.

You're Done!

Remember, most of all have fun!

binky | learns

Admit it. We all do it. We all compare our kids to others their own age. Whether it’s their ability to throw a ball, ride a bike, or read a book, it seems second nature to see how your child “measures” up. I can’t tell you how many times I have sat down in parent-teacher interviews only to be asked; “How does my child compare to the rest of the class?” I almost always answer with the same teacher jargon that you have probably heard time and time again; each child learns at their own pace and in their own way; a statement that I truly believe. However, as a teacher it is one thing for me to sit there and say that, but as a parent I understand that that’s not necessarily the answer you’re looking for. So, what do you do when you discover that your child is struggling to learn their letters? What do you do when it is your child who refuses to sit down and read with you at home? I have compiled the following list of tools that I hope will help you help your child.

1. Use your child as a resource:

For example, if your child loves Lego, then use Lego to create letters and words! If your child loves Star Wars, help them create a Stars Warsthemed comic book and ask them to write the words they know! We can learn so much from our children if we just take the time to do so.

2. Don’t fight technology:

Instead use it to your advantage… Try downloading some of the following apps to get your kids reading. Monkey Preschool Lunchbox, Magic Spell, Little Finder ABC, and Sight Words 2.

3. At-home games:

• Use letter cards attached to clothespins to learn about word families by switching the first letter of each word to make new words. For example, the ot family; hot, not, cot etc. •Use different mediums such as chalk, paint, or play-doh to practice letter recognition and formation.

4. Ask the teacher:

Find out what literacy activities they’re doing in your child’s class and ask how you can supplement them at home. Their teachers will be able to tell you which activities they have shown an interest in.

5. Seek additional support:

If your child is not progressing, take action and don’t be afraid to seek additional support. Speak to their teacher and pediatrician. A tutor may be just what they need or there may be more going on. Your child could benefit from additional intervention such as Speech or Occupational therapy. The most effective tool to help any child succeed in reading and in life is your unconditional love and support. Your frustration is understandable; just try not to let your child see it. All they want is your approval and it can be devastating for a child to find out that their parent is disappointed in them. The more your child knows they can’t disappoint you, the more secure they will feel in trying new and challenging things. With your unconditional love and support, your child is sure to succeed. At the end of the day, love your children when they succeed, love them even more when they fail, and love them every opportunity in between.

adventures with @kauailife

One thing we love to do at Binky Magazine is poke around instagram and find inspiration of living your best life. We have fallen in love with Priscilla, her two boys and hubby who document their magical life in Hawaii and beyond on their feed @kauailife What first inspired us was a stunning photo of Priscilla nursing her little one on the beach - the most perfect moment documented for all time. And beyond the beautiful Hawaiian landscape, Priscilla travels far and wide and her feed provides inspiration for those of us who want to wander with our littles. Priscilla and her husband Daniel have taken their two boys on countless adventures and show us that there is no need to hold off on seeing the world simply because you have babies. You can find Priscilla and her beautiful crew on her instagram feed or follow their latest adventure of realizing their dream of running their own business at www.theshaveice.com (@thefreshshave) where they document their all natural shave-ice Hawaiian treat company which is run out of a 1960 vintage Aristocrat trailer. Talk about living the life!

As our babies transition into childhood, there are lots of new challenges that we as parents need to face. One of which is giving our children tools to navigate the world with kindness and self-respect. These three books have each, in their own unique way, provided little lessons to help explain these grown-up concepts in a child-friendly way.

Have You Filled Your Bucket Today: A Guide to Daily Happiness For Kids by Carol McCloud (Author), David Messing (Illustrator). This gem about self-esteem provides a tangible roadmap to help children gain a sense of purpose through helping others. The concept of “bucket filling” or “bucket dipping” is simple enough to be understood by children of all ages and demonstrates the critical lesson that our world is such a better place to live when we treat each other with kindness.

My Secret Bully by Trudy Ludwig(Author), Abigail Marble (Illustrator) This is a must-read book for all parents which encapsulates the subtleties of emotional bullying. It is not about being physically pushed around, but what happens in the subtle world of emotional aggression that can happen in a tightly knit network of friends with the use of words instead of fists as weapons.

The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds.

This beautiful children’s book goes beyond self esteem to guide children through a journey of self-discovery that will help them learn about who they are. Teaching children to embrace their feelings is a life-long gift that can begin sooner than you may think.
