Fasso Town
A place where Africans will reinvent themselves Year: Fall 2019 - Spring 2020 Course: Independent Thesis Duration: 9 Months Advisor: Elizabeth Riorden Location: Washington, DC
T
hroughout history, racial injustice in America has created culturally rich thriving neighborhoods like Chinatowns, where people can feel safe and protected during their transitional immigration process. Chinatown, Little Italy, and Little Poland, what do these culturally rich communities all have in common? A new place where locals and tourists are transported through historic cultural sites, architecture, open-air markets, and some of the most sensational food. Fasso means my father’s land in Bambara. Bambara is an ancient language spoken in Mali, West Africa. Merging the African American and African Immigrant cultures will create Fasso Town, a re-envisioned modern-day Little Africa that will bring the thriving African communities out of the “Ghetto.” Many African Americans cannot connect back to their African roots due to America’s history of slavery. For many decades the world has tried to desegregate schools, cities, and neighborhoods. However, what does owning something that you can never afford mean?Alack of educational and economic growth. All these factors have only created a larger cycle of self-segregation. In some areas, so much so that it has led to gentrification. Instead of fixing a system that has been broken since African American history was born, this project will create a place that embraces this cultural history that has been hidden from society long ago. Imagine a place where people of African descent would be welcomed and encouraged to grow as a community together. This place will require manipulating an abandoned lot in the Washington, D.C. area, McMillan Sand Filtration Site, in a pre-existing historic African American town. I will revitalize these spaces by creating a new typology for the mixed culture of Blacks, African Americans, and African immigrants to share and build businesses representative of this new culture. Thus, redesigning a new dialogue of what it means to have a thriving African American and African immigrant community that will enrich these cultures that already exist. Fasso Town will be a neighborhood that locals, visitors, and its new citizens can embrace as one, a place where race is not one’s identity. Currently, McMillan Sand Filtration Site consists of 20 one-acre filter beds. Several of these filter beds have collapsed over time due to chronic structural issues, varying from server to moderate decay levels, which leaves approximately four stable filter beds on site. Fasso Town will begin to integrate itself into this context while adapting with the original site topography that existed in the 1850s before the Army Corps of Engineers constructed the sand filtration site. Three main site gestures became the iconic architecture moments for Fasso Town. I will begin to weave in symbols and materials that speak to the rich African history spoke about in my thesis book, thus making Fasso Town a place for everyone to come and be entertained, enjoy nature, eat, shop, and worship.

McMillan Sand Filtration Site/Park has played an essential role in shaping its surrounding community and will continue to be a monumental landmark in these surrounding neighborhoods of Bloomingdale, Parkview, Pleasant Plains, and Columbia Heights. For this thesis investigation McMillan Sand Filtration is an excellent site due to its proximity to Howard University and its own history of being one of D.C.’s first racially inclusive parks in the area.

Midtown Haven Culture • Resiliency • Community
Year: Spring 2020 Course: ULI Hines Student Competition Duration: 2 weeks Team Members: Prescott Drees, Tyler Duty, Trang Le, Prasanna Rudravajhula Location: Miami, Florida

elcome to Midtown Haven, a neighborhood that captivates Miami’s economic forces’ energetic momentum and the innovative, artistic, and vibrant spirit of its diverse communities. Linking the entire region through a mixed-use, public transit-oriented development, Midtown Haven is an environmentally resilient cultural center that integrates creative industries with education, innovators with educators, and local communities with global visitors. Midtown Haven is a vital link to the Transportation Network by unlocking opportunities for the future urban neighborhood through the thoughtful street grid. It incorporates private vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, and a new transit hub serving as a primary destination along with the proposed TriRail system. This amalgamates public transportation needs between Downtown and Fort Lauderdale. To the west, a former warehouse is re-imagined as a collaborative artist live-work space. At the center, Julia Park, aptly named after Miami’s founder Julia Tuttle, rises above the ground plane, providing elevated city viewpoints. Towards the eastern end, the Haven Terrace is a year-round, multi-functional public space for individuals and families, neighbors, and visitors alike through a myriad of events, concerts, film showings, and art festivals. Overlooking Julia Park is the new Creative Arts Institute, which offers college courses for thriving students of design and fine arts and after school programs for local elementary and secondary students, anchoring youth development for the communities around the area. The adjacent Collective Works harbors start-up companies in the design and tech industries through a collaborative co-working environment. Midtown Haven reinforces the vision of living with water by creating a thriving socio-cultural and natural habitat through strategies that embrace the flood water and rainwater into the site both at the street level and at building tops. The streets are designed to act as sponges with bioswales that absorb water, then released gradually into the soil, and supported by efficient stormwater management systems to alleviate groundwater flooding. Taking advantage of the low point prone to flooding on NE 2nd Avenue, the Haven Terrace amphitheater becomes a retention pond during storm surges and sea-level rise. The elevated Julia Park transitions hardscape into a greenscape that anticipates storm surges and flooding via a water retention tank underneath, collecting rainwater and channeled flow from the Haven Terrace amphitheater.

A Cabin in the Meadow Secluded • Luxury • Small Living
Year: Summer 2018 Course: Elective - Scale of Material Duration: 2 Months Professor: Brian Healy Location: Carrizo Plain California
A
quaint cabin in the Carrizo Plain of California, this high-end luxury cabin is a glass block amongst a meadow of wildflowers, completely secluded from the busy world. California’s Central Valley was a vast grassland where antelope and elk grazed, and wildflowers swept the spring landscape three hundred years ago. Today, amidst urban and agriculture development, a remnant remains in the Carrizo Plain National Monument. Carrizo Plain National Monument is one of the best-kept secrets in California. Only a few hours from Los Angeles, the Carrizo Plain offers visitors a rare chance to be alone with nature. Some visitors say you can “hear the silence.” The plain is home to diverse communities of wildlife and plant species, including several listed as threatened or endangered, and is an area culturally important to Native Americans. When given the brief to design a small cabin on a randomly selected site, I chose to enlarge the floorplan by adding an expanding facade. Wooden panels act as curtains to allow a sense of privacy while providing shade. As these wooden curtain panels slide away from the glass structure, they become a canopy for various outdoor activities. The moving track system allows one to choose multiple arrangements, like a more private bedroom at night or a more private bathing area in the morning. In the interior of the cabin, the amenities are centralized to maximize the walkable space. One can raise the Murphy Bed in the bedroom to open up the space to accommodate indoor dining during inclement weather.

A Cabin in the Meadow
Glass and maple wood panels with copper detailing; this simplistic design provides versatility with ease. This cabin allows any couple to visit The Carrizo Plain and experience the full effect of living amongst the wildflowers in complete uninterrupted silence. Just imagine waking up here in the heart of spring when one can walk outside with a hot cup of tea and perch themselves on a wooden panel to enjoy their morning meditation.

While at AS+GG, I worked on the winning Competition Design of The Shimao ShenzhenHong Kong International Center under Fei Xu’s supervision for the Shimao Shenzhen Longgang Master Plan and the associated tower, ShenzhenHong Kong International Center Proposal. I collaborated with Iris Gan while laying out the core structure. Once that was completed, I worked with Rebecca Cryder and Marc Cerone to design office, hotel, and lobby test-fits using Autodesk Revit. Additionally, I assisted my other team members by creating a few diagrams for the masterplan design using Rhino and Adobe Illustrator.

While I worked at AS+GG I had the opportunity to work on four projects. Brickell Plaza was the last project I worked on under the supervision of Sara Beardsley. My first assignment was to set-up the Central Autodesk Revit file based on the pre-existing CAD drawings.

I later worked on all of the Schematic Design plans in Revit and CAD alongside other inhouse design team members. I also assisted with creating weekly meeting presentations, UFA/ GFA area plans, core layouts, a variety of testfits, the set-up of schematic design documents, and various Revit families and parameters.

During the month that I worked on this project, I greatly expanded my Revit knowledge and gained a greater understanding of the schematic design phase overall. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity that I had and all of the responsibility given during this time. I only hope that I can further build on these skills in the near future.
