A CRYSTALLINE FUNERA "Nuclear" International Design Competition Runner-Up, Second Prize Partner: Jiahui Guo Date: Oct. 2017
The salt crystal, which constantly seals and absorb the nuclear substance underground, will be regarded as a metaphoric connection between the funeral above the ground and the ones under it. The extra salt crystals in or around the site will be collected to build series of crystalline coffins above the ground, to seal the species which ever existed on the earth, one for each year, an ongoing funeral which lasts for 10,000 years or until the day, when the central church seals the last human being‌
How can an isolated landmark reveal itself as a coffin to seal the radioactive nuclear wastes with crystalline substance hidden 2000 feet under the ground? On the other hand, how can the crystalline funeral, reveal and warn the considerable influence of human power, superimposed into the ecosystem of the planet, to the future generation throughout the 10,000 duration of decay of nuclear substance, and probably, the human being as well?

REBUILDING THE JMZ LINE OF NEW YORK MUD 713 Studio, Spring, 2015, Instructor: Susannah Drake Washington University in St. Louis Location: JMZ Metrl LIne, New York
T
his project focuses on the redevelopment of JMZ Metro Line in New York. Our research reveals that in 2065, the sea level will be six feet higher than its average in 2015, moreover, there will be a one-million population growth that happen around this area, which means that development should be reconsidered vertically for the integration of public and private space. Acknowledging that the metro line will direct the decentralization of Manhattan in the next 50 years, the project proposed a systematic but gradually-implemented strategy based on the infrastructure renovation and building evolution. The concept of the scaffolding structures was implemented into the elements of different scales ranging from buildings to street facilities.
Transportation transit center, it combines different layers of infrastructure together.

WATER COLLECTION STRATEGY The basement of the new buildings will work as the water collecting tanks in dry seasons. Storm water from roof gardens and streets will be conveyed through pipes into the basement before pouring into the combined sewage system.
SCENARIO-1: WATER RECYCLING
FLOOD-RESISTANT STRATEGY When facing big flood or sea level rise, the basement will be evacuated and contribute to the floating of the movable layers constructed by scaffolds.

e believe that people will live alternatively in future cities to maximize the spatial capacity and efficiency to sustain the vast population. Therefore, the question for us, the designers and builders of the future city, is to think about the new architecture prototypes which contribute to the alternation while maintain the quality and humanity of life, especially for the minority who reverse days and nights working for us. Infilled with the concept of folding, both spatially and chronologically, the new skyscraper will be a compensation for the losing shanty houses and informal neighborhoods in Beijing. We choose the Tiananmen Square as our site not only because of its political and symbolic particularity, but also for the adjacency to the working place of most night workers. These units are landed into the underground space during the day time, retaining the political function of the square while providing green space with rooftop gardens for the bare ground. During the night time, these units adjust their position and unfold themselves into a highsense informal city. This strategy of spatial alternation and transformation, retain the multi-functional quality, both public space and high-density housing in this project, and protect those groups of people from being disturbed in the urbanization and gentrification process.

THE FOLDING INFORMAL CITY The folding and unfolding process of the architecture enables the alternative use of urban space, or even the dimensional transition between different users. It is enabled by a movable structure system and modular spacing strategy which synthesizes high density housing, expandable circulation system and necessary open space. We do not value segregation, no matter as a political square, an informal city, or underground green space, by integrating them together, we want to make them visible, functional, and interactive, this is also how the concept of “folding is interpreted in this project.
The ground glass panels make the underground roof gardens visible, and can be rolled down for the movement of the building units and the transformation of the vertical informal city during the night time.

REBUILDING THE SUBURBAN TEXTURE OF PARIS 2017 International BIM Design Contest Washington University in St. Louis Location: Saint Prix, Paris, France
T
his design is tr ying to explore a prevailing but significant question: how can we change a suburban segregated and monotonous area to an open and comfortable, nature-closed living environment? Considering the loose suburban texture, we design a lifted platform for an open first floor space. Meanwhile, its roof gardens provide the residents with relatively private green space—much-needed distance from the activities in the first floor. The curved form of the buildings is meant to preserve the existing canopy trees to the greatest extend on the one hand, and to create a new suburban texture with fluent and flexible form language and space quality on the other. The staggered floors generate fluent and diverse communicating space for residences.

A SUSTAINABLE TSUNAMI-RESISTANT LANDSCAPE Land 601 Studio, Fall, 2016, Instructor: Jacqueline Margetts Washington University in St. Louis Location: Auki, Solomon Islands
T
his project is an investigation of new prototypes of disaster-resistant landscape in Solomon Islands, which is under the risk of tsunami and sea level rise. This project proposes a floating intervention to mitigate the tsunami waves while provides self-sufficient agriculture land and mangrove habitat. The design’s form derives from the acoustic wedges, which can significantly absorb the sound waves because of their shapes. By calculating the ability to resist shock waves among different methods of connection, the moon shape was chosen with additional contribution to fishing, farming, disaster protection and ecology.

DUMPING CONNECTIONS
When t h e re a re n o b a r r iers o r protections on the sur face, the amplitude of waves tends to be higher by natural forces such as earthquake waves and hurricanes.
When t wo wedges are putting besides each other, the concave shape will absorb the waves which are mitigated by the movement of the wedges and water.
The mutual movement of the wedges will be offset because of the irregular placement of wedges which will vibrate in different directions when hit by waves.
The seaweed will connec t the wedges with the shallow sea beds and will works as flexible dumping connections to mitigate the shock waves and wedges’ movement.

his design is originated from reshaping the space and texture of Beijing courtyards. Taking the “pitched roof” as the fundamental formal language, the complexity and silence of the traditional Chinese courtyards are created by the reconstruction of buildings, landscape and other elements. On the one hand, the courtyard is arranged inner-oriented, on the other hand, however, the entrance, windows and corridors maintain a close relationship with the context. The use of steel, wood and prefabricated elements makes construction easy and replicable. The new courtyard will also serve as a restaurant for the neighborhood and living space for a family, while they are separated for the sense of privacy. This design is considered as the catalyst in the architecture scale for a self-driven urban renewal in this neighborhood.

WANDER OF THE LIGHT HOUSE DESIGN FOR AN ASTROLOGER
Undergraduate Studio Work, October. 2011, Advisor: Dr. Fan Wenbing Shanghai Jiao Tong University Location: Minhang District, Shanghai, China
FROM LIFE TO STRUCTURE The house is ideal for a supposed astrologer, who is the chief man of an ancient tribe in the southwest of China. He has led a distinguished life where working by practicing ancient rites to show centrality and deity, and living only to find secrets of astrology. His different lifestyles have led to a distinguished structure system which is design for the possible activities in the different parts.
T
he house design started from the narrative of space making, telling the story about the poem of the light which is specially designed for the owner--an astrologer. The wandering sequence of the house is enlightened by different quality of light, and on the other hand, this design investigates the possibility to integrate the structure as an indication of the narrative of space, whose systems are segregated because of the division of the public and private life of the astrologer.

Urban Design is always a systematic practice. This project is a integration between the Top-Down urban planning strategy as the TOD development and a Bottom-Up strategy of the building prototypes evolution caused by a new lifestyle--a live-work combined, small studio based urban phenomenon, and this project proposed a new way of urbanism based on this phenomenon and thus a new urban space pattern which fits for it.

The sustainability of the city lies in the mutual cooperation instead of segregation from each other. Thus, the Corridor of Freedom goes beyond a BRT line to a developing spine of the city.

he project is about reassembling the elements and new interventions of Pruitt-Igoe site, creating a new memorial of the famous and meaningful collective housing project while dealing with contamination issues of the site. Expressing the idea of revoking and representing, I used landscape elements (such as trees, water, soil, land forms, etc.) and new social and ecological functions (public accessibility, water collection, contaminants purification, etc.) to reassemble the image of Pruitt-Igoe and to redefine the modernist conception about social and environmental role of public space in urban areas.

he ancient Chinese regarded the garden as a small world. Typically mountains and water symbolize the nature, with water representing yin and the other yang. The surrounding walls are separating the gardens from outside world as well as providing a background for inner scenery. However, many windows and holes are still made to maintain a implict connection with different gardens and outside world.

n Chinese culture, the whole universe was nothing but chaos before it was separated into Yin and Yang. But the two are interactive, with one including and being included by the other. The positions and functions of void and entity are disorganized and interweaved to form a space model that confused the exact position and relation of the two aspects.
