The Biennial of Design (BIO) is a production and exhibition project that, through the process of developing design works and presentations for exhibition, seeks to discover contemporary design’s potential. As an international platform for new approaches in design, each edition of BIO responds to current local and global environments. Founded in 1963 as the first design biennial in Europe, BIO has operated under the auspices of the Museum of Architecture and Design (MAO) since the museum was founded in 1972. BIO accompanies design from industrialisation and modernisation to its development into a discipline that permeates all layers of human life and activity. Today, BIO acts as a test polygon, in which design is used as a tool to implement and transform everyday life among different multidisciplinary approaches to design itself. Such approaches encompass systems, production, services, scientific research, humanism and the unexpected conditions for making our living space. With its projects, BIO strives to create flexible structures that can evolve over time and continue beyond the end of the biennial.
