Odor Reasons & Solutions There are infuriating times when our homes begin give out awful stench which can have an unfriendly effect. Locating the cause of this bad stench can be difficult. Many of these odors are caused due to natural reasons. Stated below are some of the reasons and their solutions. Washing machine – The door seal on the washing machine is air tight to avoid the water from leaking out. So when you close the door of the machine after taking your laundry out, the water cannot evaporate thus causing the growth of mold and mildew. To avoid this from happening, leave the door open once you’re done with your laundry and not using the machine. Sink Pipeline – If there is a foul odor coming from a single drain that means the drain in the pipe is blocked. This means the bend of the pipe known as a P-trap is blocked due to the collection of hair, toothpaste or dirt. The solution to solving this problem is simple, i.e. you will have to take out the P-trap pipe and clean it. If you don’t want to clean it manually, you can buy an enzyme based cleaner. You will then have to pour it down every day until the enzymes eat away all the organic waste blocking the pipe. Water Heater – The reason of a bad smell in your sink can sometimes be caused due to the water heater and not the pipes. If the anode rod of the water heater is short circuited, then the cause of the foul stench is the water heater. To be certain whether the Foul smell is due to the water heater or sink pipe, pour warm water in the sink and leave it for a minute. Smell the water, after a minute. If the water smells bad, then the cause is due to the water heater. To prevent this, change the Corroded anode rod every 6 months. The Less used bathrooms – If you have a guest bathroom in your homes that is not often used, then it is capable of developing a bad smell. This is because the drains in your sink get dried. Plumbing pipes are planned with suction to keep sewer-gas fumes out of your drains. In order to work correctly they need to hold a
certain quantity of water. If there is no water in the drains, the gases get collected and fumes can be carried up through the drain and into the room. To avoid this from happening, run the water at least once a week, so there will be water in the drain to prevent the sewer gas fumes from causing bad odor.
