There are many aspects to protecting your plants over winter. In some cases, your garden plants may need only basic protection: you can paint the trunks of fruit trees with white chalk, whilst protecting roses and sensitive shrubs, like bluebeard or meadow sage, with brushwood or fleece – but sometimes, things get a little more complicated… At Bio Green, we’ve developed all of our frost protection tools with two key questions in mind: 1. Protecting plants from cold weather
Whilst you’re probably aware of the benefits of protecting tender plants from the cold during the winter months – the topic is more complicated than it seems. Lots of factors affect frost resistance, including each plant‘s health, nutrition state, habitat, container, microclimate and level of winter protection. Plants that are frost resistant when planted in a garden bed can become susceptible to cold damage when planted in pots (see page 9), and non-native species that are capable of withstanding frost in their native climate may not be able to stand up to frosts in the UK. For example, lemon verbena is capable of withstanding temperatures of up to -5°C in southern France, but in the UK, you’d be lucky if it survived if the temperature dropped to 0°C! Before the first frost, make sure you bring all your bougainvillea, angel trumpet, gentians, fuchsia, geranium, marguerite, rose mallow and lantana inside – they simply won’t stand winter temperatures. Acclimatised plants like citrus, plumbago, senna, abuliton, manuka and bottlebrush are a little hardier, but still won’t stand temperatures much below freezing. More hardy specimens, like spotted laurel, Italian cypress, arbutus, Italian maple, pittosporum, laurel, olive tree, loquat and Norfolk Island pine will stand up to light frost, but they’ll also need protection if the temperature drops past -5°C. Bringing plants inside, covering them and using high quality Bio Green frost protection tools will help to ensure that you don’t lose any precious plants over the winter months, and that all the hard work you’ve put in to nurture them doesn’t go to waste – saving you time, effort and money.

Once your target temperature is reached, a valve restricts the burner‘s gas supply so that the pilot light stays lit, but the main burner is completely switched off until the temperature decreases. When combined with the extreme efficiency of the catalytic burner, this means the unit uses around 25% less energy than competing products! Purpose built for greenhouses, the catalytic burner will deliver consistent, even heat at a user selectable range of between +2°C (frost protection) to +25°C (high fitting temperature for growth), making it a fantastic way of protecting your plants and maximising growth throughout the year.
The zero-shutdown (with automatic reactivation) of the heater is designed specifically to minimise energy use and save you money. Whilst most thermostat controlled devices only have two settings: maximum and minimum, Bio Green‘s catalytic heater is equipped with a highly sensitive thermostat control.

In essence, it’s about striking the right balance of temperature and humidity – providing plants with enough heat, moisture and ventilation so that they grow at a steady, sustainable pace. If you’re propagating early, in late winter or early spring, then it’s usually best to stand your seedlings in a bright place, but during the summer months, it’s just as important to protect them from the damaging effects of strong direct sunlight. Cuttings also need careful treatment – warm and wet to begin with (try using one of our heat mats or warming plates!), then once the first roots start to develop, you can decrease the temperature and up the ventilation to aid with growth, and to harden them off before planting.

Correct Irrigation
Generally, when it comes to watering your bedding plants (including your lawn) the rule is “less is more” – it’s better to give your plants a good soak once in a while than to provide them with a constant, drip feed of water. The secret is to provide enough water to penetrate to a root depth of 30cm, and whilst the amount needed will vary depending on the weather and soil type (light sandy soil needs more than clay), as a rule of thumb, you should provide between 10 and 20 litres of water per square metre, about twice a week. To avoid scorching your leaves, always water at ground level (water droplets can act as a magnifying glass, enabling sunlight to burn your plants). The best and most efficient time for watering is in the very early morning or late at night, when there is the least amount of evaporation. Avoid watering during the evening, when water can create a film on the leaves, opening them up to the risk of fungal infections and mildew. Whilst constant watering isn’t good for some plants, it’s more important that they don’t dry out too much – plants need fairly regular soil humidity for ideal growth, blossoming and fruit production. If you’ve ever harvested radishes or carrots and found them cracked, that’s usually because they’ve absorbed too much water after a long period of dryness. One of the best ways to improve the consistency and efficiency of your garden irrigation programme is through technology, and there’s a huge amount available, from drip tubes to multiport valves and automatic watering computers. If you’re away from the garden a lot, this is a fantastic way of ensuring that your garden is looked after properly in your absence. Don‘t forget to water your evergreens generously before winter begins (see page 9). If necessary, repeat the watering on frost-free winter days. Plants in window or balcony boxes, in pots or tubs need especially fine-tuned watering programmes, and need more regular watering than bedded plants. One of the biggest, most common mistakes made when watering potted plants is the use of cold tap water. Typically, this is colder than the root temperature of your potted plants, especially if they have been in a warm room, or in direct sunlight during the day. Pouring cold water on their roots will shock the plant, a bit like you jumping into a cold bath on a hot day, cooling the roots down abruptly, and reducing the plants growth potential.
