kommbat 2016 by Gillian Tan
The annual Kommbat competition happened last March 28 – April 01, 2016 and if you think you already know how this goes, think again. This year, teams were not formed by entire committees and instead consisted of members from different committees. Six teams were formed, namely Ciogon (Red Team), Juga (Blue Team), Altagan (Green Team), Framero (Yellow Team), Anyan (Orange Team), and Casilla (Violet Team).
if you think you already know how this goes, think again.
The six teams went through several games and challenges that tested their skills, smarts, determination, and teamwork. Throughout the week, you could spot the different teams all over campus running to checkpoints or away from rival teams. Teams showed off their strategy skills not just during checkpoints but also in between games; devising any means necessary to protect their eggs whether it’s by finding obscure hiding spots or by sending members out with decoys. At the end of the week, with new memories formed and deeper bonds made, it was time to announce the winners of Kommbat 2016 at “The Reunion Show” Friday club. First place went to Anyan with a total of 13305 points, second place to Ciogon with 12375 points, and third place to Framero with 9470 points. Certain individuals were also named MVPs, namely Sam Roque, Rexan Cormia, Gelo Cruz, Migi Foronda, Bebe Hernandez, and Tricia Suanes. Different special awards were also given to the teams: Anyan - Most Strategic, Ciogon – Best in Sportsmanship and Best Flag, Framero – Dark Horse, Juga – Strength in Numbers, Casilla – Most Creative and Best Cheer, Altagan – Go Lang Nang Go. Here’s to a successful Kommbat 2016 and for more games and excitement in the future! page page

The Chamber 40 Batch Project, one of the four major requirements in the application process, happened last April 9, 2016 at the Guanella Center. Guanella Center is a place for development and rehabilitation, and care for people with disabilities. The activity was funded by the numerous fundraising activities conducted by Chamber 40 such as selling baked goods and customized T-shirts. Toys and donations were also collected a month prior to the event to give to the residents of the Guanella center. On the day of the event, Chamber 40 prepared food, drinks, games, and activities for the residents. Everyone was given nametags and ABM was soon caught up in socializing with the residents of Guanella Center. There were ice-breakers such as dancing, playing mini-games, and watching short films for the residents. They really liked coloring in particular as they proudly showed their works to
Chamber 40: Batch Project others. The snacks prepared for them included iced tea, sandwiches, and spam that was prepared by Chamber 40.
Before leaving the Center, the residents had prepared a dance performance for ABM, complete with elaborate choreography that amazed the volunteers. The residents had obviously worked hard on preparing the performance and coupled with seeing everyone have fun and enjoy themselves made everything worth it. page page

The Secretariat Committee is usually less busy around the second semester of the academic year. A fundraising project is not something you’d expect of the secretariat committee either. However, this year’s Secretariat Committee decided to change all that by arranging a special fundraising project for the entire organization during the second semester of AY 2015-2016. Entitled, “Trash-to-Cash,” the project aimed to earn some money for the organization, and to continue promoting a sense of care for the environment within the members of the organization. Each committee was tasked to collect and bring used papers segregated into three categories: white paper, colored paper, and newspaper. These papers were collected at the end of each month for the duration of the project, and the resulting revenue from each committee’s haul were tallied. The committee that would end up with the greatest profit from their collections would be rewarded with a
pizza party courtesy of the Secretariat Committee. The project spanned the months of March to May, thus three collections were done for the entire project. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, not all of the collections have been sold to junk shops just yet, and only partial results of the project are currently available. So far, based on the collection done at the end of March, the papers yielded a revenue of 86 pesos, with the greatest revenue contributed by the haul of the Sports Committee, followed by the Finance Committee. However, the Secretariat Committee is hopeful that the last two collections will generate more revenue than the first collection. page page

The incumbent UP ABM Secretary, Gaby Mondragon, has promised that the last two collections will be sold to the junk shop as soon as possible, so that the results of the project can be finalized. In spite of this little hurdle, the organization commends the Secretariat Committee for arranging this fundraiser for the organization, and for finding a way to keep their committee and the rest of the organization even more active during the second semester. For now, the members will just have to wait a little while more to see the final revenue generated from the project, and to see which committee will get the much awaited pizza party from the Secretariat Committee!
Last April 30, 2016, the Sports committee held their main event for the second semester, Fitness Day. This event aimed to promote the importance of physical development through different sports and activities while having fun. It was held at the basketball court in Camp Karingal. The event started off with a warmup by way of a Zumba session. After which the ABMers were split into two teams for the event proper. The first sport played was ultimate followed by dodgeball and lastly, volleyball. Each sport lasted a few rounds only. Different activities such as the plank challenge and wall sit challenge were done in between the main sports to serve as a break. Water and bananas were also provided by the committee for the members to drink and eat during these breaks. The last activity was a water balloon fight, which was a great way to cool off and end the day.

On the 2nd of Spetember 2016, the members of UP ABM were able experience the first ever Sports Night, an event that integrated physical activity and immense fun to all who participated. Held at the IB Cafeteria, the Sports Committee projected a workout video in the wall which the members followed. After the workout, the members had dinner at Gerry’s Grill UPTC. While the event is now over, it is expected to be done at least once a month or so to ensure that the members of ABM will have both a healthy mind and a healthy body developed through fun and effective exercise.
“For the first ever “Sports night“, we featured a highly intense workout session which followed the program developed by the creators of the highly renowned video series, T25. This event was meant to push people out of their comfort zones to try out exercises apart from the traditional sports. In the end, the activity proved to be successful and well worth the try, with the participants challenged both physically and mentally.“ - EJ Sta. Ana page page

Blood was meant to circulate and ABMers at the Daloy blood drive had no problems passing it around. The event was headed by the Socio-civic committee in cooperation with Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity at the AS Alcove last September 15, 2016. ABM partnered with student groups IE club, UP CAST, UP Psychology Society, UP CRADLE, UP Travel Society and UP Men’s Football Team; and together, they set an example, leading numerous students fresh from their classes to donate as well. Of the multiple members who donated, some had previous experience in past blood drives but many were first-timers – both thrilled yet nervous to have a needle stuck in them. A couple of members tried but were denied during pre-donation check-up due to various reasons such as low blood oxygen, lacking sleep, and even being below the weight limit. Oh well, maybe next time! At the end of the day, about a hundred bags of blood were collected from kindhearted donors who came to the alcove from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The donors were all ensured that their collected blood would certainly provide another shot at life to those who would receive it – certainly a great gift to anyone who deserves it!
