Dois dias antes da recente cimeira das Nações Unidas sobre alterações climáticas, um pouco por todo o mundo, centenas de milhares de pessoas participaram numa marcha contra o aquecimento global, demonstrativa da impaciência global, tendencialmente crescente, com este fenómeno, cujas consequências começam a sair do papel, demonstradas em modelos teóricos produzidos, e já provocam vítimas um pouco por todo o nosso mundo global. S.Tomé e Príncipe, e a ilha do Príncipe em particular, não será exceção. Não temos dimensão territorial nem massa crítica, nos domínios científico, humano e tecnológico, muito menos recursos financeiros, para absorver, sem impactos consideráveis, todas as consequências resultantes deste e de outros fenómenos ambientais, provocados direta ou indiretamente, pelo Homem. Por isso, a nossa marcha, contra este problema, terá de ser diária, com uma grande vocação mobilizadora e pedagógica, englobando todos os sectores de atividade, numa perspetiva de compromisso comunitário de longo prazo, suportado por um plano de intervenção transversalmente concebido. A inserção da ilha do Príncipe na rede Bios, transformou-se assim, num desafio continuamente atualizado, que nos permitirá estar, simultaneamente, com alegria, responsabilidade individual e coletiva, nesta “Marcha Mundial Triunfal”, com todos os tipos de tambores e clarinetes.

Two days before the recent UN summit on climate change, all over the world, hundreds of thousands of people participated in a march against global warming. This showed the general impatience with this phenomenon, which tends to grow and the consequences of which begin to leave the paper, demonstrated and produced in theoretical models that are already causing some casualties throughout our global world. São Tome and Príncipe, especially the island of Príncipe, will be no exception. We have no territorial dimension or critical mass in the scientific, human and technological fields, much less financial resources to absorb, without significant impacts, all the consequences from this and other environmental phenomena, caused directly or indirectly by Man. Therefore, our march against this problem will have to take place daily, with a large mobilization and teaching vocation, comprising all sectors of activity, from a perspective of long-term community commitment, supported by an intervention plan, transversally designed. The insertion of the island of Principe in the BIOS network, thus became a continuously updated challenge, which will allow us, simultaneously with joy, individual and collective responsibility to be a part of this “Triumphant World March", with all kinds of drums and clarinets .

A nossa luta permanente contra a desflorestação no contexto regional; os esforços para o controlo e preservação das tartarugas que desovam nas nossas praias, mesmo colocando em causa aspetos de natureza sociocultural secularmente enraizados; o controlo de entrada e uso disseminado de plásticos na região; a aposta assumida no desenvolvimento de um turismo sustentável valorizador das preocupações ambientais e de aspetos da cultura regional; a redução e fiscalização de explorações de inertes, designadamente areias, nas nossas praias, mesmo em contraciclo com o plano investimentos e necessidade de construção de infraestruturas para a região como forma de responder às necessidadesbásicas dos cidadãos em termos de água, saúde, educação e energia; o interesse e a aposta, no futuro, paulatinamente, de fontes de energia renovável como forma produção de eletricidade na ilha e, sobretudo, o esforço das instituições regionais para a criação e implementação de projetos educativos que propiciem, em todas as Escolas e níveis de escolaridade, um verdadeiro projeto de educação ambiental transformador de valores negativos que têm contribuído para o uso inapropriado dos bens comuns da humanidade, na nossa ilha, constituem bandeiras que transportaremos, diariamente, nesta grande marcha. Não temos alternativa: esta é a forma ideal de cuidarmos de nós cuidando também do mundo.

Our ongoing fight against deforestation in the regional context; the efforts for the monitoring and preservation of turtles that nest on our beaches, even jeopardizing deeply rooted aspects of sociocultural nature; the control of the entrance and widespread use of plastics in the region; the self-confessed bet in the development of sustainable tourism which values environmental concerns and aspects of regional culture; the reduction and control of the exploration of inert substances, including sand, on our beaches, even in a counter cycle with the investment plan and the need to build infrastructures for the region as a way of responding to the basic needs of citizens in terms of water, health, education and energy; the interest and commitment in the future, gradually using renewable energy sources as a way to produce electricity on the island and, above all, the efforts of regional institutions for the creation and implementation of educational projects that make possible, in all schools and levels of schooling, a true environmental education project, transforming negative values that have contributed to the inappropriate use of the common property of mankind, on our island, are flags that we will carry daily on this great march. We have no choice: this is the ideal way to take care of all of us and also of the world.

ÁGUA & RECICLAGEM WATER & RECYCLE

“Recebeu-se um total de 100 mil garrafas de plástico para reciclagem em troca de 2000 garrafas da Biosfera” Quase um ano depois da implementação do Projeto Water&Recycle este continua a ser um sucesso, sobretudo pelas comunidades e voluntários que abraçaram a iniciativa de limpar a Ilha. Em 4 dias de recolha, nas comunidades de norte a sul, recebeu-se um total de 100 mil garrafas de plástico para reciclagem em troca de 2000 garrafas da Biosfera. No total foram também instaladas 9 máquinas purificadoras que permitem o acesso a água potável, não só em algumas das escolas da Ilha, mas também no hospital, aeroporto e edifícios públicos. A máquina de compactação recém-chegada já começou a enfardar o plástico para futura exportação e breve vamos receber mais garrafas e purificadores para implementar a 2ª fase do projeto, continuando também com as ações de educação ambiental nas escolas.

Almost a year after the implementation of the Water & Recycle Project, this continues to be a success, especially in all the communities and by the volunteers who embraced the initiative to clean up the island. In four days of collection in the northern and southern communities, a total of 100 000 plastic bottles were received for recycling in exchange for 2000 Biosphere bottles. In total, nine purifying machines were installed that allow access to drinking water, not only in some of the schools on the Island, but also in the hospital, airport and public buildings. The new compaction machine has already started baling plastic for future export and soon we will receive more bottles and water purification fountains to implement the 2nd phase of the project, while also continuing with Environmental Education in schools.

WORKSHOP: A CERTIFICAÇÃO BIOSPHERE RESPONSIBLE TOURISM WORKSHOP: THE BIOSPHERE RESPONSIBLE TOURISM CERTIFICATION
Durante o mês de Julho o BomBom Island Resort recebeu a visita de Xavier Sánchez, representante oficial do Instituto de Turismo Responsável (ITR), para a entrega da placa oficial Biosphere Responsible Tourism ao primeiro hotel com esta certificação em África. No decorrer desta visita foram realizados dois workshops técnicos sobre o trabalho do ITR e a importância desta certificação, um na Ilha do Príncipe e outro em São Tomé, dirigidos aos Stakeholders públicos e privados, da área do turismo, dando a conhecer os modelos de desenvolvimento que efetivamente contribuem para a gestão e proteção da herança cultural e natural de São Tomé e Príncipe, promovendo o desenvolvimento sustentável dentro da indústria do turismo, encorajando a autenticidade social e cultural de cada comunidade e promovendo a economia local.

During July, Bom Bom Island Resort was visited by Xavier Sánchez, official representative of the Institute of Responsible Tourism (ITR) for the delivery of the official Biosphere Responsible Tourism board at the first hotel in Africa with this certification. During this visit, two workshops were organised about ITR and the importance of this certification. One was held on the island of Príncipe and the other in São Tomé. Both were directed to public and private stakeholders, providing information about the development models that effectively contribute to the management and protection of the cultural and natural heritage of São Tomé and Príncipe, promoting sustainable development within the tourism industry, encouraging the social and cultural authenticity of each community and promoting the local economy.

“cooperate in the promotion of São Tomé and Príncipe as a sustainable destination”
O Governo de São Tomé e Príncipe, através do Ministro do Comércio, Indústria e Turismo, e o Instituto do Turismo Responsável (ITR) assinaram um protocolo de cooperação através do qual o Sistema de Certificação Responsible Tourism recebe o reconhecimento oficial em São Tomé e Príncipe. A par deste reconhecimento, ambas as instituições comprometem-se em cooperar na promoção de São Tomé e Príncipe como destino sustentável e no domínio da capacitação e formação de quadros neste sector importante da economia nacional. São Tomé e Príncipe é o primeiro país em África a formalizar uma cooperação com o ITR em prol do desenvolvimento sustentável dando sequencia aos passos do BomBom Island Resort, o primeiro Hotel em África a obter esta certificação e a colocar a Ilha do Príncipe no mapa-mundo do Turismo Responsável e Sustentável. Com este passo o Governo mostrou-se empenhado em trabalhar para que o destino São Tomé e Príncipe como um todo, venha a ser uma referência a nível de sustentabilidade e do turismo responsável.
The Government of São Tomé and Príncipe, through the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, and the Institute of Responsible Tourism (ITR) signed a cooperation protocol through which the Responsible Tourism Certification System receives official recognition in São Tomé and Príncipe. Along with this recognition, both institutions undertake to cooperate in the promotion of São Tomé and Príncipe as a sustainable destination and in the field of capacity building and training of staff in this important sector of the national economy. São Tomé and Príncipe is the first country in Africa to formalize cooperation with the ITR for sustainable development giving the sequence of the steps taken by Bom Bom Island Resort, the first hotel in Africa to achieve this certification and to put the island of Principe in the world map of the Sustainability and Responsible Tourism. With the step, the government has proven that the work developed for the destination of São Tomé & Príncipe will become a reference in terms of sustainable and responsible tourism.

SEMINÁRIO SOBRE O PROGRAMA E COMITÉ NACIONAL MaB SEMINAR ABOUT THE MaB PROGRAM AND THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE
A Reserva da Biosfera do Príncipe promoveu dois seminários de capacitação sobre Programa Man and Biosphere (MAB) da UNESCO, no qual se enquadram as Reservas da Biosfera da UNESCO. Os seminários decorreram na Ilha do Príncipe e em São Tomé tendo contado com a participação de dezenas de técnicos de vários departamentos oficiais, membros da unidade de gestão da Reserva da Biosfera do Príncipe e outros interessados. A formação esteve a cargo de António Abreu, coordenador técnico da candidatura da reserva da Biosfera do Príncipe, e abarcou os aspectos fundamentais do programa MAB, os seus objectivos, estruturas de funcionamento, organização e instrumentos normativos como a Estratégia de Sevilha e o Plano de Acção de Madrid. De entre as matérias abordadas, destacam-se os modelos de organização, gestão e funcionamento das Reservas da Biosfera, a participação nas diferentes redes temáticas e geográficas e que, no caso da Reserva da Biosfera do Príncipe, incluem a Rede REDBIOS, a Rede Mundial de Reservas da Biosfera em Ilhas e Zonas Costeiras e a rede Africana de Reservas da Biosfera (AfriMaB). Foi ainda tema em análise nesta formação, o papel do Comité MAB Nacional e o potencial de uma nova candidaturas a Reserva da Biosfera em São Tomé e Príncipe. Estão previstas novas acções neste âmbito para o ano de 2015.

“Training seminars on Man and Biosphere Program (MAB) of UNESCO” The Biosphere Reserve of Principe promoted two training seminars on Man and Biosphere Program (MAB) of UNESCO, of which all the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves are part of. The seminars were held on the island of Príncipe and in São Tomé, and counted with the participation of dozens of technical officers of various departments, including representatives of Príncipe Biosphere Reserve Management team and other stakeholders. The training was conducted by António Abreu, technical coordinator of Príncipe´s Biosphere Reserve. It embraced the fundamental aspects of the MAB program, its objectives, operational structures, and organization and regulatory instruments such as the Seville Strategy, and Madrid´s Plan of action. Among the topics covered, stood out the models of organization, management and operation of Biosphere Reserves, participation in different geographic and thematic networks. In the specific case of Príncipe Biosphere Reserve, were relevant the REDBIOS Network, Network World Biosphere Reserves in Islands and Coastal Areas and the African network of Biosphere Reserves (AfriMaB). Another matter considered was the role of the National MAB Committee and potential new applications for a Biosphere Reserve in São Tomé and Príncipe. Further actions regarding these matters are planned for the year 2015. [8]

PLATAFORMA DE TURISMO RESPONSÁVEL E SUSTENTÁVEL PLATFORM FOR RESPONSIBLE AND SUSTAINABLE TOURISM
Tendo em conta os elevados impactes negativos sociais, económicos e ambientais do Turismo, foi criada em São Tomé e Príncipe uma Plataforma para a Promoção do Turismo Responsável e Sustentável no país. Composta por entidades turísticas locais que se comprometem com as políticas sustentáveis e responsáveis da plataforma, esta tem como missão maneira a preservar os frágeis ecossistemas e proteger a biodiversidade única existente nas Ilhas, tal como dar a conhecer e preservar as heranças culturais e sociais, através de serviços turísticos de excelência. Assim, destinos autênticos como São Tomé e Príncipe, ainda pouco conhecidos mundialmente, posicionar-se-ão como uma referência global no turismo responsável, contribuindo para o desenvolvimento sustentável do país.

“It has been established in Sao Tome and Principe a Platform for the Promotion of Responsible and Sustainable Tourism in the country” To overcome the high environmental and socio-economic negative impacts of tourism, it has been established in Sao Tome and Principe a Platform for the Promotion of Responsible and Sustainable Tourism in the country. It includes local tourism entities committed to the sustainable and responsible political platform, and its mission is to preserve the fragile ecosystems and protect the unique biodiversity existing in the islands. It aims to inform and preserve the cultural and social legacies through first class tourism services. Thus, authentic destinations such as Sao Tome and Principe, still little known to the rest of the world, will position themselves as a global benchmark in responsible tourism, contributing to the sustainable development of the country.

A RESERVA DA BIOSFERA NO MÊS DA CULTURA THE BIOSPHERE RESERVE IN THE CULTURAL MONTH
O mês de Agosto na Ilha do Príncipe é inteiramente dedicado às atividades culturais e é quando se registra o maior número de entradas na Ilha. Desde o dia um, que abre com o desfile temático das crianças, é possível assistir a representações culturais quase todos os dias. No centro da cidade são montados vários stands onde é possível provar pratos e bebidas típicas, tal como comprar artesanato e interagir com as comunidades. A Reserva da Biosfera também esteve presente com um stand de divulgação e promoção. O ponto mais alto do mês é a representação do Auto de Floripes no dia 15, a chamada festa de São Lourenço, uma peça de teatro itinerante que desenrola ao longo da cidade durante cerca de 12h, representando a luta entre os Mouros e os Cristãos e a história de amor entre Floripes e o seu apaixonado Cristão.

The month of August on the island of Príncipe is entirely devoted to cultural activities, and at this time the highest number of arrivals on the island are recorded. Since day one, which opens with the theme of the children’s parade, you can attend cultural representations almost every day. In the center, several stands are assembled, and here you can taste typical dishes and drinks, buy local artefacts and interact with the communities. The Biosphere Reserve was also present with a stand used for publicity and and promotion. The highlight of the month is the representation of ´Auto de Floripes´ on the 15th, called the party of St. Lawrence, a play that unfolds traveling throughout the city for about 12 hours. It represents the struggle between the Moors and the Christians, and the love story between Floripes and her passionate Christian.

Inicio do contacto com o Comité Ciêntifico da RB do Príncipe, para delineamento dos Livros Vermelhos das espécies nativas e endémicas da Ilha do Príncipe. Beginning of the contact with the Scientific Committee on BR of Príncipe, to design the Red Books of native and endemic species of the island.
Participation of RB Principe in the Fundamental Sciences Program in celebration of the International Year of Crystallgraphy with a lecture at the International day science, with Dr. Rita Caldeira, from the National Laboratory of Energy and Geology.
No dia 3 de Novembro, pelas 11:30H, no Centro Cultural do Príncipe, será apresentanda a brochura “Do Planeta Terra ao Espaço”, desenvolvida no âmbito do projecto “Eclipse 2013: História e Ciência no Príncipe”, evento organizado pelo Governo da Região Autónoma do Príncipe, HBD e Matemática do Planeta Terra. On the 3rd November, at 11: 30H at Principe Cultural Center, will take place the presentation of the brochure "From Earth to Space", developed under the "Eclipse 2013: Science and History in Principe" project, event organized by the Government of Príncipe, HBD and Mathematics of Planet Earth.
No dia 27 de Novembro vai-se realizar a quinta recolha de plástico na Ilha, com inicio em Santo António. On November 27 it will carry the fifth-plastic collection on the island, beginning on the city of San Antonio.
