Abstracts (where supplied) Managing radiology services and service development—a radiographer’s perspective Mr Adrian Trinidade There is a plethora of challenges facing imaging mangers in delivering a timely and cost-efficient service to the service users and the trust. Ensuring that key performance indicators are delivered is not usually effective with top-level managerial decisions but through the implementation of a system that ensures that there is full staff integration and job satisfaction. We will briefly look at six aspects affecting most imaging departments—finance, assessment of staff and procedures, staff training and development, statistics, audits and integration at a trust-wide level and how changes to management of these areas has led to a more efficient and streamlined department. Educational aims: • We will examine the changes made within a medium-sized district general hospital to examine how they overcame some of the major challenges facing the Imaging department and explore the possibilities and obstacles in delivering this to other Trusts. Learning outcomes: • To examine one’s current style of management and local code of practice to explore what changes can be made to help understand what obstacles are occurring and how they can be overcome. The implementation of new services and managing change Dr Ros Crooks The implementation of new services and managing change within any organisation is a process that requires careful orchestration. The outcome of any such project is often dependent on the journey itself. Ensuring that the right people are involved, that they remain engaged with the process, and that they see the benefits of a common goal will smooth the process and increase the chances of success. Having a systematic approach is key. Revalidation and appraisal—how to make it work for you Dr David Grant Appraisal is a cycle of improvement designed to allow the doctor to develop their practice, so as to deliver better patient care. It is well-established in non-medical career structures, but the administrative burden, time required and cost have made its incorporation into routine medical practice slower than in other career disciplines. However, there is a legitimate public expectation that doctors should be competent and previously there was no mechanism of assessing this on a regular basis after the original date of qualification. 7

Appraisal is a mandated General Medical Council (GMC) requirement, but the challenge is to move from compliance to a sense of commitment to the process by individual practitioners. The ability to provide a track record of behaviour and satisfactory appraisal can often assist the doctor in dealing with complaints. It is for these reasons that transparency, documentation and clear evidence of communication with reflection are so important. Revalidation was introduced in 2012 and links the appraisal cycles to provide a comprehensive comment about the doctor. Revalidation is the process by which doctors are “licensed to practice” and can demonstrate that they are up to date and fit to practise in their chosen field and able to provide a good level of care. Revalidation aims to give confidence to patients that their doctor is regularly checked by both their employer and the GMC. Licensed doctors have to revalidate every 5 years by having annual appraisal as defined by the GMC. Educational aims: • Outline the process of appraisal and revalidation • Review the changes to the GMC Good medical Practice Guidance • Demonstrate the potential protection afforded by a track record of a series of favourable appraisal outcomes Learning outcomes: • Look at appraisal as a positive experience. • Encourage reflection as part of routine medical practice. • Place emphasis on communication, probity and good documentation. The new chief executive of the NHS has outlined his Five Year Forward View and the Dalton Review has articulated possible organisational forms. The drive for increased access to services outside of tertiary and secondary care, pressure from patients, GPs and commissioners is huge. There are opportunities for radiologists to support and be integral to new models of care. I will cover some high level national issues in this presentation and also explore how we as radiologists can guide the agenda by being pro-active with our commissioners as they design pathways of care that extend out into the 8

community and closer to peoples homes. I will touch on the concept of value based healthcare and give examples of how benchmarking can help with the challenge and how important collaboration is between organisations. Educational aims: • An understanding of the NHS context in which radiology departments currently operate and of how to influence the agenda pro-actively. Learning outcomes: • Ability to discuss how radiology can support out of hospital care. Confidence to start a discussion with commissioners about radiology outreach. Developing a career in management—a trainee’s perspective Dr Fiona Pathiraja This session will cover: • Top tips for consultant interview with reference to management and leadership • How to get involved with quality improvement locally as a junior trainee • Portfolio careers and the bigger picture • Context to the wider NHS healthcare landscape and where trainee-leadership fits in Project management and preparing a business case Dr Colm Prendergast In this talk I shall explain why you need a business case and its importance to service development or redesign. I shall define the structure and key elements that are essential to writing a good business case and explore common reasons for failure. Successful strategies for communicating and maximising the impact of your case with decision makers will be discussed. Once agreed, a project will need good management to ensure delivery. I shall look at best practices for successful project management and common reasons for failure. I shall explore what defines success and how to build on it for the future. Teleradiology and its implication to radiology as a career Professor Philip Gishen The lecture covers the background of teleradiology including consultants’ contracts, work output and the increase in radiology requests by clinicians for CT, MRI and US. The financial implications of Teleradiology will also be discussed.
