More space ‘future-proofs’ Moore business

BULLETIN BOARD

FOR THE FAMILY

Andrew Meeks, golf & turf area manager at Burnley dealership Balmers GM, has pleased his family. They are fans of Burnley FC and he’s now supplying the Premier League club’s extensive Barnfield Training Ground with John Deere machinery. But he’s a Liverpool fan. Photo shows Burnley FC head groundsman Barry O’Brien (centre front) and his team with the new John Deere machinery fleet.

SALES SUPPORT

Groundsman-turnedsalesman Oliver Hall (pictured) has joined MTD Specialty Turf Products as sales manager for the Midlands region, a role which will see him providing sales support to dealers across both the Cub Cadet Infinicut and TMSystem product ranges.

SERVICE SUPPORT

Argo Tractors has appointed Luke Barnard (left) as precision farming specialist, in addition to his role as area service manager for all of Ireland.

JOHNSTON’S NEW PARTNERS

KUHN Farm Machinery has appointed familyowned Johnston Tractors as a dealer for northern England and southern Scotland. All three of Johnston Tractors’ depots at Carlisle, Dumfries and Appleby are now official KUHN stockists and service support dealers.

DRONES TAKE OFF

Research compiled by Price Waterhouse Coopers estimates 76,233 drones will be used in the UK by 2030 – and more than a third (25,732) will be used in agriculture. New EU unmanned aircraft regulations may come into effect in July 2020.

DAVID AND LIZ Moore of Moore Farm Services have moved into larger premises and switched their tractor franchise back to McCormick. It’s all part of their expansion plan for their agricultural machinery dealership at Harworth, near Doncaster. The move gives them more space for new and used machinery storage, four times as much workshop space and a bigger parts store and shop. “It’s a very busy but exciting time for us,” said Liz Moore. “Our business has grown significantly since taking on Amazone in 2012 and then Krone in 2016, and the move to premises five times larger than our previous ones should future-proof our needs for the next 10 years or so.” The couple (pictured) first set up shop as Moore Farm Services in 2010, drawing on their practical hands-on farming background to set high standards for customer service and building on David’s experience working as a test and development engineer when McCormick tractors were built in Doncaster. “McCormick products were the bedrock of the business at first but later we were tempted to switch to a different make that we thought would meet particular customer requirements,” explained David. “Since then, we’ve seen the McCormick range transformed with the introduction of more powerful models, CVT transmissions and other modern technologies, which is just what many arable farmers in our area wanted. “So we’re now back with a McCormick range that offers very modern, very capable and very appealing tractors, especially at the top end, with advanced powershift and CVT trans-

missions, and all the technology options you’d expect to find on any frontline tractor.” Liz believes the south Yorkshire business is also better placed now to uphold the high standards of customer service they strive for thanks to McCormick manufacturer Argo Tractors holding a substantial stock of parts at its UK branch. “When we changed our tractor franchise previously I think we underestimated the value of being able to draw on the manufacturer’s local parts supply for something we don’t have in stock,” she said. “Instead of having to wait for overseas shipments, we can get urgent parts from Argo Tractors in the UK – and having their base here at Harworth just a few hundred metres from our own premises is obviously a great advantage!” The workshop team of two full-time technicians plus David will continue to service and repair the tractors supplied in recent years, while David’s unmatched knowledge of the older McCormick ‘Doncaster’ products serves him well with farms still operating those tractors in the area. “We’re anticipating a busy and very positive experience with McCormick once again,” added Liz.

Staff member hurt in blaze A fire at Randells Garden Machinery in Toftwood, Dereham, has injured a member of staff. Six fire crews attended the blaze, after residents reported hearing “a loud bang” before seeing large plumes of smoke emerge from the nearby premises. Firefighters spent several hours battling

the worst of the flames and remained at the scene overnight and into the morning. One member of staff was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital with burns. The fire destroyed a number of buildings and machinery including several lawnmowers.

‘We have to come together to ensure that we have succession for technicians’ BAGMA’s director, Keith Christian, returns from SALTEX with a message to the industry… COMMENT

KEITH CHRISTIAN DIRECTOR BAGMA I’ve just returned from SALTEX. The show was busy both mornings but as usual petered out early in the afternoon. However, exhibitors reported good interest and those I spoke to were happy about the show and levels of enquiries. It was also a good show for BAGMA, where we were able to talk to members and sign a couple of new companies. It was a good show at a good time of the year and well organised by the IOG. I was asked to do a presentation in one of the Learning Live Theatres about the issues relating to recruitment and retention in the landbased engineering sector. Although speaking to a small audience, the level of interest was high and interestingly was picked up on by an American company who are involved in a similar promotion because of the shortages of technicians in the USA. The low numbers of technicians coming into the industry at an apprentice level is alarming and a big concern for our industry worldwide. The only way we are going to make a difference to this is for the LBE sector to get off its backside and start encouraging young people to take an interest in the industry. We need greater visibility, we need a generic recruitment programme, we need funding and we need both the small and large companies in the industry to start taking a more proactive interest in recruitment locally and nationally. We are not alone, I am dealing with the same issues through our European CLIMMAR group and it is very clear that the problem exists all over the world. We have to come together to ensure that we have succession for technicians. With an average age in the industry for technicians of 55 and a yearly shortage of apprentices of around 650 a year in England alone, it just isn’t looking good for the future.

£310,000 paid for ‘most important tractor ever to come to auction in the UK’ A RARE 1903 Ivel Agricultural Motor – described as the “most important tractor ever to come to auction in the UK” – sold for £310,000 at an East Anglian auction. The Ivel Agricultural Motor, cited as one of the great British inventions, brought collectors and enthusiasts flocking to the Cheffins’ Vintage Sale at Sutton, near Ely, last month. The three-wheeled machine, the brainchild of visionary inventor Dan Albone, was the first commercially-viable British tractor and the first to go into volume production. The 1903-made model – number 131 – is probably the best-known of the world’s eight complete surviving machines, said auctioneers, having been a star attraction at the National Tractor and Farm Museum in Northumberland for many years as part of the late John Moffitt’s Hunday Collection. After a bidding battle between potential buyers, it was sold to an anonymous telephone bidder for £310,000 (£328,600 with buyer’s commission) – smashing the pre-auction estimate of £200,000-£250,000. At the same auction, a County 1884 model described as a “holy grail” for tractor collectors also exceeded auctioneers’ expectations by fetching £132,000. The 1982-made machine

was highly prized by County collectors due to its scarcity, high specification and eye-catching appearance – and was sold with just 3,833 hours on the clock and all its original manuals. The model was the last and largest of all the tractors to be introduced by the original firm of County Commercial Cars in Hampshire, and only a handful were built before the company went into receivership in 1983. Although the model continued under the reformed County Tractors, sales were extremely limited with the last supplied in 1989-90, and estimates suggest there are now no more than 20 County 1884s in preservation.

Clive leaves Tractor Machinery Imports registrations up in ‘a strong position’ MACHINERY IMPORTS’ GENERAL manager, Clive Carter, has left the business after 13 years. Head of Machinery Imports, Bill Johnston, commented: “Clive will be missed by all of the Machinery Imports team. We wish him the very best of luck and are confident he will make a success of all his future endeavours. In departing the business, Clive leaves it in a strong position, with a positive year behind us so far in 2019 and extensive plans for further growth over the coming months and years.” At his send-off, Clive was presented with an engraved statuette of a Spitfire fighter aircraft amongst other gifts – reflecting one of Clive’s many interests.

After a dip in August, UK registrations of agricultural tractors (over 50hp) picked up again in September. At 1,044 machines, the monthly figure was 7.9% higher than in September 2018. This brings the total for the first three quarters of the year to 10,312 units, 6% up on the same period last year. However, remember that registrations in 2018 will have been suppressed following pre-registrations in late 2017, ahead of the application of the Mother Regulation. Once this is taken into account, the registration figures indicate a market which is at a similar size to 2018.

Please remember that as employers you have control, it is you who has to agree that the apprentice is ready for the end point assessment, it is you who knows when they have the technical competence to support your customer and it is you who will suffer if the apprenticeship value is compromised by shortening the apprenticeship period. I may have a mercenary view but it’s obvious to me that we must train and retain apprenticeship trained technicians within our industry as long as we possibly can. This cannot be achieved by adopting a 36-month apprenticeship. Ideally, a five-year period of developing skills, knowledge and experience would make far more sense to the technician and employer. Let’s be honest, the budding technician wants exemplary skills and knowledge that command respect and the employer has to see a return on the considerable investment required to develop world-class technicians.

The big trends in tractors Ahead of Agritechnica, the international showcase for the global agricultural machinery industry, Roger J Stirnimann, from the University of Agricultural, Forestry and Food Sciences in Zollikofen, Germany, gives an insight into the most important innovations and the trends that can be determined from them.

The eAutoPower gearbox for the new 8R large tractors from John Deere represents the first electro-mechanical power split gearbox in agricultural technology. Technically, the hydro unit (pump/motor) is completely dispensed with; instead, two electric motors are used as a continuously variable actuator.

Exhaust emission legislation remains a technology driver Since January 2019, diesel engines in new tractors of more than 130kW have been required to adhere to Stage 5 exhaust emission limits; from January 2020, this will also be the case for the output class from 56-130kW. In terms of particulate emissions, the tighter weight limit values (g/kWh) have been joined by an additional limit for the number (total particles/kWh), making closed-loop particulate filter systems unavoidable. Some tractor manufacturers have completed the shift to exhaust emission Stage 5 engines on existing model series without a great deal of fuss in 2019, whereas others coupled this to the development and presentation of new models. Common rail fuel injection, four-valve technology, turbochargers, charge air cooling, viscous fans and electronic engine management remain the engine technology mainstays for reconciling the requirements of power output, consumption and emissions. Familiar technologies are also being implemented in terms of exhaust emission technologies. The diesel oxidation catalytic converter (DOC), diesel particulate filter (DPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) exhaust gas after-treatment

8

systems are always fitted in exhaust emission Stage 5 engines on agricultural tractors; as regards exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), differences are now only to be found in the form of internal engine technology for the avoidance of nitrogen oxide formation. On the whole, a trend towards reduced recirculation rates, or even complete omission, is now emerging. Besides CNH, as a long-standing advocate of SCR-only, Fendt, for example, is now also doing away with EGR in its new Vario 900 large tractor model series. The DOC, DPF and SCR exhaust gas aftertreatment systems are increasingly being contained in compact single modules and positioned outside of the engine area. A typical example of this is the all-in-one solution from Massey Ferguson for the 6700S and 7700S model series. CNH is using new SCRoF systems in which the DPF has an SCR coating and therefore partly undertakes nitrogen oxide reduction. The complete exhaust gas after-treatment system, consisting of DOC, a coated DPF and smaller SCR thus takes up barely more installation space than the previous Stage 4 exhaust emission systems with DOC/ SCR. The medium-size class model series with four- and six-cylinder engines from all three

With the Fendt IDEALDrive, AGCO provides an unobstructed view of the area directly in front of the combine harvester by dispensing with the steering column and steering wheel. The driver’s seat is equipped with a lefthand armrest with a joystick.

CNH Group brands have now also been joined by the re-engineered Case IH Magnum AFS Connect large tractor model series with SCRoF technology (six-cylinders, 8.7 litre engines). A paradigm shift is taking place in the topic of power boosts. Previously falling squarely in the non-boost camp, Fendt is now implementing a sensor-controlled solution called Fendt Dynamic Performance in its new Vario 314, thanks to which the same basic output is always available for actual work. This boost power is activated variably depending on the power required by ancillary consumers such as the fan, alternator, air-conditioning system and air compressor. As a proponent of abundant power boost, Case IH is shifting in the opposite direction and ensuring that the rated and maximum BAGMA BULLETIN NOVEMBER– DECEMBER 2019

COVER STORY

Why I love this industry But Mike Pullin of P & D Engineering reveals he could have been a chef… BASED AT BREDON on the Gloucestershire/ Worcestershire border, P & D Engineering focuses on new and used telehandlers, tractors and other agricultural equipment and machinery. The family business, established in 1976, also has a new shop, comprehensive parts department, and a fast-growing groundscare department offering a complete range of compact tractors, mowers, attachments and utility vehicles. Recently it extended its showroom and workshop facilities. Brands include Merlo Telehandlers, McCormick, Branson and Kioto tractors, and Vicon grassland equipment. Recently, P & D became a dealer for the Canadian range of Arrowquip premier cattle handling systems.

Getting a sale is always a challenge and it is one that I really enjoy Mike Pullin

BAGMA Bulletin: How has 2019 been for you and the business? Mike Pullin: Overall, the year has been a busy one as well as very productive. We have seen an improvement in turnover and our groundscare department has seen an increase, although tractor sales have been a little slower. You’ve extended your showroom – why was that and has it worked? We had always planned to extend and as we had outgrown our existing premises, the extension became a necessity. The shop, however, was a new addition and has proven to be a great success. But we are not complacent and we regularly review our stock in line with our customers’ requirements. An example of this

10

was animal feed which has been extremely popular. You’ve also increased your stocks of compact tractors – why was that and how has it improved the business? We initially focussed more on compact tractors to give us a wider range of machinery to sell and as there is a fairly large market in this area for these type of tractors, this has proved to be very successful. Is the hire department pulling its weight? In contrast to sales, the hiring division of our business has been quieter this year, although it is still a major part of our business. Tell us a bit about the background to the business and if you were always destined to run an agricultural machinery and groundscare business? I think I was destined to run an agricultural and groundscare business. At the age of 19, myself and a friend decided to set up P & D Engineering. In those days, it was mainly repairs and manufacturing of gates and steel framed buildings, although we also built and prepared rally cars, an interest that we still share to this day. At that time, I was working for a local dealership as an apprentice, so we would carry out our own work during the evenings. But we still managed our Friday nights at a local club! In 1980 I left the dealership and decided to take the business full time. We built our first premises at Bredon’s Hardwicke and then in the early 1990s we bought the current site which at the time was just a field and was where we erected agricultural buildings. In 1994 we moved permanently to the current premises where we continued to develop P & D to the wide-ranging business it is now. What other careers did you consider? Oddly enough, I did consider becoming a chef when I was still at school. I had always enjoyed BAGMA BULLETIN NOVEMBER– DECEMBER 2019

cooking and seriously contemplated doing it professionally. But before I even left school I had received an offer of an apprenticeship, so that really made my mind up for me! What do you like about this industry? I love this industry. It is unique and I like that. Getting a sale is always a challenge and it is one that I really enjoy. What do you dislike? Nothing really. How has your business been affected by the uncertainty surrounding Brexit? I believe that some people are sitting on the fence, waiting to see what is going to happen and this has obviously had a small impact on our business. But that is really the only effect I have seen. How has BAGMA helped the business? BAGMA’s links with Bira Bank have been very BAGMA BULLETIN NOVEMBER– DECEMBER 2019

useful when purchasing vehicles and we have also benefitted from preferential rates for our business insurance. We also benefit from special discounts when we purchase from specific suppliers through Bira/BAGMA. What’s the biggest challenge facing your business today? From our own experience, I would say that trying to find quality service engineers has been our biggest challenge. We are extremely fortunate to have some excellent engineers but have found that when we have need to recruit, the quality and enthusiasm just doesn’t appear to be there. We do strongly believe in bringing youngsters into the industry and actively encourage this by running an apprenticeship scheme, as well as working closely with local schools to support work experience programmes. What’s been your proudest personal achievement? This business.

SHOW REVIEW

Kioti UK launched the compact, multipurpose LM-Trac 286 self-propelled vehicle, made by Finnish company Oy Lai-Mu. Kioti’s parent, POLS Group, is investing in emission-free technology for the machines, which are used for mechanical and thermic weed control. Other attachments available make the unit suitable for mowing, leaf blowing, sweeping paths and roads with a rotary brush, snow clearance, grit spreading, and collection of dog excrement.

British manufacturer Razorback launched a range of flail mowers, going from lightweight solutions for compact tractors to heavy-duty options for the agricultural and amenity user. The heavy-duty, high output machine for dense overgrown vegetation and grassland is the RK DS Series, which is fitted with a front and rear mountable headstock, double skin chassis and an anti-shock rotor. The new range is a result of Razorback’s partnership with an Italian manufacturer.

6 of the best from SALTEX

Here are some of the machines that caught our eye The most eye-catching product at the NEC was the Vale TS1200 trailed gritter sprayed pink for Yorkshire Gritters. To mark its tenth season of keeping businesses safe and free from ice and snow, Yorkshire Gritters’ managing director, Chris Johnson, thought it would be nice not only to have a new gritter but for it to be painted pink and used to support cancer fundraising. The idea was discussed with Vale’s managing director, James Wilson, who immediately embraced the idea. “We build gritters that go all over the country in various sizes and whilst we normally paint them in Highway Yellow we really thought Chris’s idea was awesome and seized the opportunity to help,” he said. Agria UK, a new sister company to Wiedenmann UK, introduced two hybrid remotecontrolled rotary mulching mowers. The agria 9600, with its low centre of gravity and rubber tracks, can tackle heavy-duty work on steep slopes (up to 50°). In two widths, 112cm and 80cm, it cuts and mulches in two directions. The agria 9500 is a remote-controlled compact mower which performs to a very capable 45°. With brushless motors and electromechanical braking, it offers zero turn and a working width of 70cm.

12

Reesink Turfcare launched two outfront rotary mowers from Toro’s GM3000 series – a 24.7hp and a 37.4hp, both Stage V emissions compliant, with options of 152cm (60ins) or 183cm (72ins) rear, side, recycling and flail cutting decks. Both benefit from a transport speed of 22km/h to move between sites efficiently and a large 45.4 litre fuel capacity to maximize mowing time between refuelling. Toro has focused particular attention on the durability of the deck in the design of this new series. With 4.5mm high strength steels decks, rugged spindles, a bullnose bumper and reinforced sideskids, the improvements made are aimed at longevity and reduced downtime.

Campey Turf Care Systems exhibited the new AllTrec Tool Carrier. The Dutch-made machine is 100% electric and can be used with either the cutting deck, weed brush, hedge trimmer or weedkiller attachments. Because it is fully electric there are zero CO2 emissions and very low operating costs.

BAGMA discusses Europe-wide issues at CLIMMAR conference BLUE SKIES AND the snow-capped Swiss Alps greeted delegates for the 2019 CLIMMAR Conference in the stunning town of Thun, Switzerland. Organised by the Swiss trade association Agrotec Suisse, this year’s conference theme centred on training and education, bringing together programmes and ideas from CLIMMAR members across Europe. CLIMMAR, established in 1953, is the agricultural machiner y sectors’ trade association umbrella group and represents 16 European countries. Attended by Keith Christian, BAGMA director, and Howard Pullen, BAGMA’s permanent CLIMMAR representative, the conference covered a variety of topics over three days, including the national and European dealer survey, DSI, from France, and the lobbying activities of CLIMMAR. Keith gave a talk on the important issue of recruitment and retention. There were also presentations from conference sponsors Granit Quality Parts and Simo-net. Erik Hogervorst (pictured), president of CLIMMAR, chaired the conference, and talked

20

about administrative matters and the future of CLIMMAR. The conference group also visited the AM Suisse Education Centre for land-based engineering and received presentations from the general director of the school, Josef Widmer, and Dita Traides, president of World Skills. A very busy conference also had a very well organised social programme with a formal dinner at the Kursaal of Interlaken and a more casual evening at the top of the Stockholm with the group enjoying some relaxing music, fantastic views of the Alps and Thun, and a typical cheese fondue supper. Keith commented: “This was one of the busiest and most varied CLIMMAR meetings I have attended. The subject diversity and the interest and involvement of the 70 or so attendees was remarkable. It was also very interesting to hear the European wide solidarity concerning recruitment, retention and education and the determination to make careers in the land-based engineering sector more visible and achievable.” Next year’s CLIMMAR Conference will be in October in Budapest.

John Halliday with Charlie Rollason at Lister Wilder

Invited guests observed demonstrations of the new Servo 5F plough, Lion/Aerosem power harrow drill combi, 4m Terrasem trailed grain & fert drill, new multiline lightweight modular trailed drill, Synkro tined cultivator, 5m trailed Terradisc and the full range of McCormick tractors from 120hp to 225hp. The demos were performed with great expertise as Andrew Mitchell (Snr) and his son Andrew Mitchell (Jnr) are multiple world ploughing champions. Pottinger and McCormick representatives expressed their delight at what was a very worthwhile event.

In Kent Our business development manager Richard Jenkins also spent two days in Kent visiting members and potential members. Richard visited 15 sites over this period and received a warm welcome from all. These businesses range from small one-man garden machinery repair units right up to the large agricultural depots employing many staff. But all are independent, family-run and most with a long history of providing the best service to their customers. One of Richard’s calls was to M & A Brown & Sons in Goudhurst where Amanda Brown said: “We held our first open day in 2019 and this marked the completion of the new showroom area and the beginning of the rebranding to M & A Brown & Sons. The day was a great success and we were supported by a wide variety of machines on display from all of our manufacturers.” Other members visited included Haynes Agricultural in Wrotham Heath and Godfreys (Sevenoaks), both located at impressive sites and at the forefront of their sectors.
